The purpose and objective of Leadership Marshfield is to identify current and potential leaders in the community and

provide a training program that will enhance their ability to function as more effective leaders. They will be better equipped to face the issues, problems, and challenges that will determine our community’s future.

Program Philosophy and Purpose

The purpose of the community project is to provide participants with an additional

educational experience beyond the monthly sessions. Participants are expected to gain the following from the community project:

• Experience in community problem solving and issue resolution; • Knowledge about a community organization while seeking resolution of a problem or issue; • Experience in working effectively in a group setting; • Knowledge that they can make a significant contribution to the well-being of the community; • An opportunity to demonstrate leadership.

Participants select their projects after learning about opportunities confronting the community and according to their interests. The projects selected are outlined in this book.

If you or your organization have a topic with community-wide impact that you would like a future Leadership Marshfield group to consider as a project, contact MACCI.

A huge thank you is extended to Todd Diedrich for his facilitation and leadership of the projects portion of this program, and monthly review of the leadership habits and skills.

Special thanks to Sally Cutler who facilitated the two-day retreat, setting the tone for the entire program.

MACCI’s first Leadership Class graduated in May 1993. This 2018 class was recruited in

the summer of 2017. Members participate in a series of eight informative one-day programs and develop group projects designed to meet each individual’s interests and community needs.

The Leadership Marshfield program can best be defined as:

• Identifying and developing current and future leaders. • Acquainting these leaders with community needs and problems. • Enabling these individuals to be better prepared to face the issues and problems which will confront our community’s future. • Preparing and challenging them to become involved.

This book is a result of our 26th year’s efforts. We present to you, the community, our 2018 graduates of LEADERSHIP MARSHFIELD.

Description of Project:“Bringing our community together through exercise, reading, and fun.”

The CatTale Walk will cover 3 short sections of the Marshfield trail system (depending on donations). Each 1/3 mile loop will contain a fun story to read, along with history of Marshfield information, riddles, “Did you know?” questions, and seek/find puzzles.

Our first trail to host The CatTale Walk will be Veteran’s Parkway east of the library. Pending donations and community support, the goal is to have the opportunity to add two more walks along the Griese Park trails. Partners in this project include, Friends of the Marshfield Public Library and the UW-Marshfield/Wood County Student Ambassador Program.

Status of Project:• Goal is to have one full trail completed (Veterans

Parkway by summer 2018) and two trails completed at Griese Park within two years pending sponsorships

• Received thumbs up from Marshfield Parks & Recreation for installation on February 8, 2018.

• Secured Partnership with UW-Marshfield/Wood County Student Ambassador Program to assist with maintaining The CatTale Walk

• Secured Legacy with Friends of Marshfield Public Library on March 4, 2018

• Fundraising letters delivered to local businesses March 6, 2018 with contributions due April 1, 2018

Description of Project:We are working with Cheryl Hartl, Director of Soup or Socks (SOS), to provide new back-to-school clothes for qualifying area families. Last year SOS was able to outfit almost 100 children (shoes, socks, underwear, 2 outfits and winter gear), but the need is far greater. Our goal is to serve at least 200 children this year.

Status of Project:A mailing was sent to local area businesses requesting funds to supplement needs for the project. Examples are boots, underwear, winter gear, and clothing. We are hosting a new clothing drive in March to collect most needed items (new tennis shoes, new leggings/athletic pants, new hoodies and new socks) for boys and girls grades 4K – 12. Public locations with drop boxes include Hotel Marshfield, Hub City Times, MACCI, YMCA, Pioneer Bank in Marshfield and Rozellville, Shopko, and Three Oaks Health Services. • So far we have received $2,820 in monetary donations.

Best First Day

• WDLB is running a Public Service Announcement for Best First Day: https://youtu.be/pd4KMiWF5ZY. Thank You to Mike, Chase, Cheryl Hartl and Brett Butler from Tri-Media. WDLB also did a radio ad prior to March 1st, 2018.

• Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) donated new drop boxes, and larger boxes for storing overall collections were donated by Mitten’s and Furniture & ApplianceMart.

• March 10th: Best First Day team is volunteering at SOS’s Empty Bowls event at Hotel Marshfield. We will be promoting the Best First Day campaign with posters and hand-outs.

• May: A post card will be included in all NOW lunches inviting families to contact SOS for qualifying for the program and registering their children. Families must register by June 1st.

• June: Mason Companies, Inc., parent company of Figi’s Companies, Inc. will provide 100 pairs of athletic shoes based on sizes known to still be needed.

• August 8th at SOS: Clothing will be provided to registered families; The Best First Day team will be assisting SOS all day; postcards highlighting donors will be given to participating families.

• Volunteers needed: Volunteers are needed for set-up on August 6th and 7th, the event on August 8th and clean-up on August 9th. Contact Cheryl at SOS if interested: [email protected].

Description of Project:Our goal for this project was to make 50 weighted blankets and donate them to the Marshfield Area United Way so that they can be distributed to those who need this therapeutic tool but are unable to afford them. Weighted Blankets are becoming a popular therapy tool for a variety of conditions, including but not limited to Autism, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, stress, insomnia, and chemotherapy treatments. The weight of the blankets releases our “happy hormones” of serotonin and dopamine, much like receiving a big hug. These blankets can also be extremely expensive, so we wanted to gather resources and manpower to help make these blankets for those who might not be able to afford them. We reached out to local businesses for fundraising efforts and included an incentive for their business logo to be incorporated on the blanket fabric. Our group identified a weighted blanket creation day, May 10th, at the Marshfield Middle School. We joined forces with different community groups, incorporating different generations, to create a project that has potential to last year after year. This project wouldn’t be possible without the help of Christie Country

Quilts, Marshfield Area United Way, Marshfield Middle and High School FCCLA groups, a local quilters’ guild, and volunteers throughout the community.

Status of Project:On March 10th we had our blanket creation day. As stated above we had a goal of making 50 blankets and donating them to United Way. With no time to spare on Saturday, we ended up making 50 weighted blankets! Our team was ecstatic with the results and the hard work the volunteers did on Saturday. It was amazing to see that everyone was having fun making these blankets and enjoyed learning more about them in the process. At this point, our group has expressed that we are interested in doing another weighted blanket creation day. We had a lot of help from Kristine with Christie Country Quilts in Neillsville and she has had a lot of customers asking about these weighted blankets. Coordination hasn’t begun yet, but we would love to work with Kristine and have a weighted blanket creation day for Neillsville in the near future.

Description of Project:Our project is similar to the TOYS 4 TOTS program that is currently well known nationwide. We are offering the same concept of serving low income families in the Marshfield area, but different in that we allow children to pick out and give presents to their parents or guardians. Presents 4 Parents mission is: to foster a spirit of generosity among the children we serve by providing an opportunity for them to experience the reward and emotion of giving.

Status of Project:We launched our project last Christmas, serving the Marshfield Area Community Center for Outreach’s Youth Net program. Prior to our event, we collected merchandise donations as well as gift wrapping supplies from our community members, and monetary donations from local

businesses. On December 18, 2017 we set up what we call our “pop-up shop” at the Youth Net site. As the children came into our “shop” they were given a ticket to use in trade for a present for Mom and/or Dad. The gifts were set up on tables according to who they were shopping for. We also had a table where we could help the children wrap the gifts and put on a gift tag. We heard many of the kids say this was the first time they had been able to give a parent a gift, some had never even wrapped a present before! Presents 4 Parents is a Rotary Project – Leadership Marshfield Collaboration.

Description of Project:To come alongside organizers, Middle School Principal Mike Nicksic and Carol Berg-Kappel, to help develop an outdoor sanctuary where Middle School teachers may host classes and students can earn privileges to read, reflect, and relax.

Status of Project:Fundraising and concept for our portion of the development have been completed. Our next work will come with the creation of the garden when classes end in late May. The garden is scheduled to be completed by the time classes begin in the fall.

Leadership Marshfield Alumni Network“How do I stay involved in Leadership Marshfield?”

The Leadership Marshfield Alumni Network allows graduates to stay involved in the Leadership Marshfield program. It provides ongoing support, new leadership and learning opportunities for alumni and fellowship for current and previous participants.

Current Alumni activities include the following:

- “Adopt A Highway” Each year, alumni members pick up trash along a two-mile stretch of Highway 80 South between Marshfield and Pittsville as part of the state’s program.

- Continuing Leadership Various workshops are offered to strengthen professional development skills.

- Scholarships are made available to individuals interested in participating in the Leadership Marshfield program, through the Leadership Marshfield Alumni. Individuals must be employed by a non-profit organization.

- Grant dollars are awarded to the current class should they request start-up dollars for their projects.

- Christmas Giving Project For the past several Christmas seasons, the Alumni have raised funds to buy children’s gifts for families served by agencies. In 2017, a total of $970 was collected by the Alumni through personal donations and a

check was presented to the Marshfield Area United Way to purchase items for families through the NOW program.

- Alumni Project Presentation Alumni have given talks regarding their projects from their Leadership Marshfield class and some have assisted in planning and facilitating future Leadership Marshfield program days.

Alumni are recognized annually with an “Alumnus of the Year” award. The award has been presented to Kate Kaz in 1999, Bette Adler in 2000, Donna Rozar in 2001, Heather Holden in 2002, Mary Fehrenbach in 2003, Thom Gerretsen in 2004, Sue Decker in 2005, Dale Marth in 2006, Todd Diedrich in 2007, Kathy Meidl in 2008, Brenda Dillenburg in 2009, Al Nystrom in 2010, Mary Blanchard in 2011, Peg Geegan in 2012, Dr. Lori Bents in 2013, Tammy Meissner in 2014, Paula Jero in 2015, Kim Vrana in 2016, Nick Arnoldy in 2017, and Cathy Lotzer in 2018.

Perspectives, MACCI’s monthly newsletter, recognizes accomplishments of the Leadership Marshfield Alumnus throughout the year.
