S.O.S! Kristi Butkovich, IBPA President is the parent of a senior and will not be returning next year. The IB Parents Association needs to fill her vital Board position ASAP so that the new volunteer can take full advantage of working together with Kristi this year. Please e-mail Kristi, [email protected] for information.

From the President If you are one of the many people who sent me e-mail messages recently and didn’t get

a reply, I apologize! My Comcast e-mail has been quirky for the past month. Everything seems to be working fine now… So keep those messages coming

and, if appropriate, I will reply! Thank you for your understanding. I can also be reached at [email protected].

Visit the Board All parents are invited to the monthly IB Parent Board planning meetings. We meet the first Tuesday of each month, from 6:40 to 8 PM, in Room 125. Come hear reports about funding, programming, CSC, teacher appreciation, senior brunch plans, CAS, college counseling and much more.

Get to know other interested parents! All are welcome to observe, ask questions, and join in the process! Contact a board member listed on the back page of this newsletter for more information.

College and University Reps Visit GW Representatives from more than 50 top US colleges and universities visited GW last month. During these visits, juniors and seniors had the opportunity to meet individually and in small groups with admissions counselors – many of whom review applications from Colorado. These meetings not only gave students a chance to ask questions and learn more about some great schools, but they also allowed students to develop relationships with admissions representatives and gain personal insights from them. If your student didn’t participate this year, be sure to encourage him or her to meet with a few reps next year. Students can sign-up for visits by logging onto their Naviance account. Schedules are available beginning in mid-September and are updated regularly. Special thanks to Michael Jennings, Future Center Director, and Shelly Moorman, IBPA College Counseling Chair, for their excellent work in planning and coordinating the fall visits. Special appreciation also to GW parent volunteers who helped welcome representatives during College Readiness Week (October 10-14): Kathy Gile, Alesia McCloud-Chan, Peggy Morse, Anne Murdaugh, Cora Neslin, and Amy Steele.

National Merit Scholarship and National Achievement Programs

Alice Cordova-Potter, Cassandra Duchan, Sarah Pierce, Emma

Thompson, Michael Homiak

Congratulations to Michael Homiak, Anjelica Neslin, Sarah Pierce, and Emma Thompson who have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program. The four GWHS seniors are among about 16,000 semifinalists nationwide taking a step closer to some 8,300 scholarships worth more than $34 million that will be awarded next spring.

Additionally, the following GW seniors were commended by the National Merit Scholarship program: Zachary Busse, Alice Cordova-Potter, Jillian Elisberg, Daniel Morgan-Russell, Ben Reilly, Daran Schiller, Perrin Tourangeau, Eleah Wilkerson, and Matthew Zavislan. These are among about 34,000 students nationwide and place in the top five percent of the 1.5 million students who took the PSAT in 2010.

Six GW seniors have been honored by the National Achievement Program as outstanding African-American high school students: Gabriella Carrethers, Alice Cordova-Potter, Cassandra Duchan, Miles Moore, Ali Norwood, and Richard Norwood. This program refers these outstanding young men and women to colleges throughout the nation, recognizing their potential to excel in their further education.

Congratulations to all these fine students!

After school tutoring is available for GWIB students who received grades of D or F on their 6-week progress reports. Students must first get a referral from their teacher or Ms. Lane. Tutoring is in the IB office (Room 121) on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2:40-3:30, Wednesdays from 3:00-3:45, and Thursdays from 1:20-2:56. This is NOT drop-in tutoring.

From the Director What’s new in GW’s IB Program?

The year is tearing by, as it seems to every school year, with changes touching us briefly and sometimes changing our course as we work toward our goal of getting students to mature through the process of becoming independent scholars and responsible, globally aware young people.

We have new faculty in sophomore English teachers Mr. McArdle and Mr. Betcher, a new freshman biology teacher in Ms. Mulder, a new IB counselor, Mrs. Cassidy, a new IB Visual Art teacher, Ms. O’Ryan, and a new IB History of Europe and the Middle East teacher, Mr. Leeds. Our IB faculty have taken on new courses with Mr. Bancroft teaching junior IB psychology in addition to IB English, with Dr. More absorbing the entire sophomore class in 10th grade chemistry. Ms. Guggenheim works with students every Friday as a volunteer. The IB office is busy every afternoon with older students tutoring freshmen and sophomores, under the oversight of Ms. Lane.

We have applied to offer exciting new curriculum, The IB Career Related Certificate. This new IB offering will target non IB students currently in grade 10, and open a door for students who do not wish to be Diploma students to access some IB curriculum. Sara Ozee, a business and technology teacher, will be the coordinator for that program. When we hear that we are authorized to offer it, she will be letting all of you know about the details.

Even the terminology is changing. We are now referring to our grade 9 and 10 classes as Pre-Baccalaureate classes (PB instead of PIB). IB English A1 is now known as IB Language and Literature, and Language B is now called Language acquisition. Some of this new nomenclature will be explained at the next parent meeting, November 8. This very important meeting is for all sophomores and their parents. Choices for the diploma years will be explained and students will be selecting their two year curriculum. The focus is on understanding the Diploma Program requirements, and guiding sophomores into grades 11 and 12.

The Denver Public Schools is now conducting all school applications and placement through the District central offices. All requests for school placement in high school must be submitted by January 31 through a District SchoolChoice form. Our recruitment and screening must happen by January 15, so we have pushed ahead our new “request for consideration,” formerly known as the application process, to meet that deadline. Kristi Butkovich, has taken on the role of Community Liaison for GW, and is helping us reach out to our feeder schools and larger community. She is assisting us in getting the word out about GW and IB,

We are busy, but hoping to remain responsive to the students and parents in our IB community.

GWHS Softball Team Succeeds in the Classroom and on the Field

The GWHS softball team wrapped up its 2011 season with a solid record on the field and an even more

impressive performance in the classroom.

Three IB students on the team were selected to the DPS All-City Team: Catie Abeyta, honorable mention; Hope Cornish, 1st team; and Angie Neslin, 2nd team.

The team’s academic achievements are even more impressive. Parent Cora Neslin recently published an article detailing these accomplishments in the Denver Post Your Hub section. You can read the article online here: http://dpo.st/prlTCC. Congratulations to these excellent representatives of GW!

From the Friends of IB Scholars Foundation President: Two ongoing opportunities to support IB

Families! We want to remind you of the following ways for you to support the IB Program.

FIRST, the Friends of IB Scholars Foundation wants to remind all IB families that the Ebrahimi Family Foundation has pledged to match $15,000 of contributions to the IB Foundation from IB families, alumni and friends. This means that the first $15,000 of contributions from IB families, alumni and friends will be doubled to $30,000. Also remember that because part of the Ebrahimi Challenge Grant is designed to match contributions from other foundations, please let me know of any charitable foundations that might help us out. Please help us meet the challenge!!

SECOND, IB joined an online buyer program last year through MarketAmerica (IB parent and MarketAmerica representative Amanda Halliday will oversee our participation) that steers a certain percentage of your purchases of a wide array of products to the IB Foundation. Of course, from there, the funds are used to support the IB kids. Sign up by visiting: www.marketamerica.com/georgeib. From there, you will be directed into the registration section.

Remember that since the Friends of IB Scholars Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, your gift can be tax-deductible Please do not delay in sending in your contributions, whether $25, $50, $100, $250, $500 or more. November or December is a great time to make your donation, since your contribution can be tax-deductible for 2011.

Please send your contributions to Friends of IB Scholars Foundation, c/o Janice Thomas, Treasurer, 1634 S. Leyden Street, Denver, Colorado 80224, or use the link below to donate online.

And please contact me at home, 303-364-9181 or at my office, 303-492-2353, or by e-mail at [email protected], if you have any questions about the IB Foundation.

APPLAUSE… We are proud to announce that ACT has identified GW as a high-performing school, as demonstrated by our students’ above-expected achievement. We were recently listed in “A First Look at the Common Core and College and Career Readiness” guide as one of the schools in Colorado that are making exemplary progress toward college and career readiness for all students. This designation by ACT was based on GW’s improvement of ACT scores over time compared to schools across the nation. We’re proud of our Patriot students and teachers for keeping their eyes on the prize, and working hard to make college readiness a reality for all of our students.

COLLEGE ADMISSION 101 Finding a good college fit was the focus of College Admission 101, our second College Prep Tele-Seminar, which was held in October. No worries if you missed either this topic or College Admission 202 in August: you can still download the slides and listen to the recordings at www.georgeib.com under the College Prep tab.

In addition to providing tips for determining college fit, IB college counselor Rusty Haynes provides websites to search for colleges (www.collegeboard.com and more). With most colleges now accepting both ACTs and SATs, Mr. Haynes shares test prep strategies and ways to determine which test to take, as well as helpful approaches to letters of recommendation, essays and college interviews. Also covered: Early Action, Early Decision and -- once a student is accepted -- National Signing Day on May 1, 2012. Don't miss our next College Prep Tele-Seminar -- Landscape of Financial Aid -- at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15. Email Rusty

YOUR DREAM COLLEGE WITHOUT STICKER SHOCK? Are you thinking you need to be a well-rounded student to catch the eye of your dream college? Guess again. What today's colleges are looking for are well-rounded freshman classes, not well-rounded freshmen. So go ahead and be yourself, do your best work, follow your passions...and get your applications in on time!

All this and more was the topic of conversation during October's IB Parents Association meeting, thanks to seasoned independent educational consultant Diane Schaefer (www.schaefereducationalplanning.com). What do colleges look for? Above all, program difficulty, followed by grades and class rank. Back that up with solid board scores. Then add in the activities you love, focusing on quality and depth, not quantity. Show genuine interest in each specific college you're applying to, and then nail all your qualifications with solid recommendations.

If all this sounds like a lot of work, you're right. Schaefer estimates that the college application process is about equivalent to taking an extra IB class -- on top of your normal workload! Schaefer adds that "planning is key, since grades are still king during your senior year." To help lessen the pressure, be sure to balance your college application list by including safety schools you're sure will accept you, target schools that match your abilities and performance, plus stretch schools to see if you can make the mark and beat the odds. Financial safety is also important to consider, so be sure to include at least one school that you know you can get into and afford.

Filling out the second half of October's information-packed meeting was Jay Murray, certified college planner and president of Solutions for Tuition. Murray's motto is "The only family that should pay full price for college is the family that so chooses." He backs up his words with plenty of number-crunching and insider tips.

"Never cross off a school from your list just because of its sticker price," he says. Instead, apply as many of Murray's cost-cutting approaches as you can, whittle that price down, and then when you reach the final net price, you'll be able to see if it's still out of your price range.

If you missed October's meeting and are wishing you could get your hands on some of Murray's strategies, contact him at www.solutionsfortuition.com. Mention GWHS and he will offer you the following with no cost or obligation: a Navigating the College Financial System e-book, a subscription to his email newsletter, and a Free College Cost- Cutting Session.

On Tuesday afternoon, October 25, 17 members of George Washington’s Speech and Debate team were given the opportunity to participate in a round table discussion with political analyst, journalist, and author, Cokie Roberts (fifth from left in the front row of the photo). Ms. Roberts was in Denver to participate in a fund raising event for the Denver Scholarship Foundation. She agreed to visit a local high school in conjunction with this event and she selected GW because of its nationally recognized Speech and Debate Team. The students asked her a variety of questions ranging from her opinion on the continued viability of the Electoral College to her views on the recent assassination of Libyan leader, Muammar el-Qaddafi. They also discussed the current state of public education in United States. The students greatly enjoyed meeting someone who has such extensive knowledge on the type of current issues they typically reference in their debates and speeches. Later that evening in her speech for the fundraising event, Ms. Roberts mentioned that she was extremely impressed with the GW students.

Speech and Debate Team Takes a Bite out of Big Apple On October 13-16, 2011, the GWHS Speech and Debate team opened its 2011-12 season by attending the 41st annual New York Invitational National Tournament held at the Bronx High School of Science. This was the first meet for the varsity team since an outstanding performance at the National Speech and Debate Tournament last summer in Dallas, Texas. There were 138 schools registered for this tournament. Senior Dan Morgan-Russell led the team by taking first place overall in International Extemporaneous Speaking. Junior Dylan Hertel, earned the top speaker award and his partner Jack Kealey was also chosen as the twelfth top speaker in Public Forum Debate, and they were

Octo-Finalists in Public Forum Debate. Juniors Eli Gordon and Langston Williams, who was chosen as the fourteenth top speaker, finished as Double Octo-Finalists in Public Forum Debate. Sarah Pierce, who was chosen as the twelfth top speaker in Policy Debate, and her partner Lucy Shen were Double Octo-Finalists in Policy Debate. This was the first time GW has attended this tournament. Schools from as far away as California, Louisiana, and Florida also attended. The GW students stayed with host families and met, competed, and networked with students from across the country. GW’s success at these national tournaments provides a great experience for the students, and national publicity for GW and the state of Colorado. Maryrose Kohan, the speech and debate coach, is excited and proud of the team that she has seen grow from ten students six years ago, to over 140 today, including last year’s national champions Sam Clark and Miles Owens in Policy Debate. Kohan is expecting great things from this group and the rest of the debate team for this upcoming season, which officially begins in Colorado in November. The team participates in three or four local speech and debate meets each month. They will also attend national tournaments in Utah, Wyoming, and California. GW and East High will hold their first combined “Mile High” national tournament November 11 and 12, 2011. Judges, volunteers, and donations are needed. GW will sponsor a speech and debate team “Performance Night” fundraiser on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from 7-9 PM at the school. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Let’s get behind our champions! — Larry A. Williams

THE IB COLLEGE COUNSELING CORNER

Thank you to Future Center Director Michael Jennings for his excellent coordination of the many college admissions representative visits to GW this fall, as well as to parent volunteers serving as greeters during the hectic week of October 10. Students should follow up their rep visits via e-mail. Take this opportunity to ponder how admissions officers would view your e-mail address. Instead of [email protected], consider creating a new account with an address along the lines of [email protected]. Changes in e-mail addresses should also be sent to Ms. Lane ([email protected]) so that students don’t miss important messages from the IB office. Naviance is another important communications tool. E-mail Ms. Lane if you don’t have your access code and haven’t set up your account!

This is crunch time for SENIORS. All regular application materials are due to Ms. Geimer by November 1.

November and December are “Be Kind to Seniors” months, as they work hard to complete coursework and extracurricular commitments, keep up their grades AND pull together their college applications.

For each college you are applying to, you must turn in a correctly addressed 6” x 9” envelope (self-sealing preferred; no return address) and a completed white half-sheet checklist, with the admissions address also written on the reverse. Include four stamps per college, but don’t attach them to envelopes.

If any of the schools require a supplemental school report (instead of, or in addition to, the Common Application school report form) please include that form and make a note on the half- sheet under “Special Instructions.” Please read the supplement form carefully to determine what information is required and note it on the checklist. If the form has a narrative section, that means Ms. Geimer should include a counselor’s letter of recommendation.

If your schools require teacher recommendations, be sure to get those recommendation forms and stamped/addressed envelopes to teachers by December 1.

Complete your “Colleges to Which I’m Applying” list in Naviance now. Ms. Lane will be relying on Naviance as a tracking tool, so it is essential that you enter your school list promptly and accurately.

Any supporting documents from the school that are not sent out before Winter Break begins on December 16 will have to wait until after school resumes on January 4, and will therefore miss early January deadlines.

Of course the application is not complete until the student submits her/his own portion of each application (including any student-generated supplements) directly to the colleges.

Early Decision/Action deadlines have either passed or will soon, and Regular Decision and scholarship deadlines are rapidly approaching. Reduce stress by completing applications and paperwork sooner rather than later! Students who wait until the last day to submit online applications may find the systems overloaded and unable to accept their submissions before the deadline.

If you need supporting materials from the IB office for separate scholarship applications, please use the pink half-sheets to make those requests. Be clear, specific and timely in completing and submitting those sheets and mailing envelopes.

PARENTS OF SENIORS who are applying for financial aid should be gearing up to prepare 2011 tax returns and the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA; www.fafsa.ed.gov) as early in the New Year as possible. Some colleges also require the CSS/PROFILE and/or their own additional applications (some with December deadlines). The CSS/PROFILE can be completed now (https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/prf/index.jsp).

JUNIORS’ to-do lists are getting longer too.

Juniors and their parents can schedule individual meetings with IB college counselor Rusty Haynes beginning in January. Students initiate these appointments by contacting Mr. Haynes by phone (office: 719-576-9487 or cell: 719-232-5305) or by e-mail ([email protected]). Feel free to contact him with your questions in the meantime.

If your junior wants to visit out-of-state colleges while they are in session, it’s not too early to start thinking about a Spring Break trip.

This is also a good time to plan for the ACT with or without the Writing Test and/or the SAT with or without Subject Tests. The ACT will be administered at GW on April 24. GW arranges registration and fees, and the test is administered during the school day. Please note that this version of the ACT does not include the optional Writing Test.

http://www.georgeib.com 11

The testing program websites (www.act.org and www.collegeboard.com) have more detailed information and are a good source for test preparation books, as are local bookstores. See also Mr. Haynes’ test prep recommendations on the College Prep page of the George IB website at www.georgeib.com/pdf/gwib_test_prep_Haynes.pdf.

SOPHOMORES and FRESHMEN who think they might apply to highly selective colleges that require Subject Tests should investigate whether they should take one or more at the end of this year. This would only be indicated for students who might need a specific Subject Test (e.g., Chemistry or Biology) and who do not plan to continue with that subject after May.

ALL STUDENTS are encouraged to explore options for summer. Possibilities abound, although some involve a competitive application process and many involve fees. There are good no-cost and low-cost programs and internships as well, but they tend to fill early. The most meaningful summer jobs tend to go to the early birds too. This is a good time to research what’s out there, so that you are timely in your applications.

STANDARDIZED TESTING: Juniors should be planning when they will complete standardized testing required by the colleges to which they might apply. For seniors, the December test dates are the last ones that can meet most college application deadlines. Please familiarize yourselves with what various colleges require and plan accordingly. Details and online registration are available at www.act.org (ACT) and www.collegeboard.com (SAT).
