The Room for Adelaide is seen as a temporary activation project which creates a platform for the people of Adelaide to take in one of the best views of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. The building will continue to operate as a car park with only the roof of the car park (which is an open car park deck), temporarily activated with pavilions and landscape elements. Its likely that the car park will remain in the foreseeable future and any opportunity to explore a re-branding of the facade through vertical screening that can support greening would soften the building as a back drop to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

A Room for Adelaide Lane creates an opportunity to extend the Northern Laneway link through the site and toward the Adelaide Botanic High School. With the temporary activation of the adjacent car park roof structure, the lane can provide a useful pre function space for events occurring on top of the building. In addition, the end of the site begins to engage with a potential urban agriculture site and could explore Water Sensitive Urban Design as an educational aspect to the space directly adjacent the Adelaide Botanic High school.

A ROOM FOR ADELAIDE OBJECTIVES

Create a program of temporary activation initiatives that engages the whole of Adelaide.

Provide pavilion and series of spaces for hire and the ability to cater for events.

Explore alternative activation project such as boutique accommodation

Enable residents and visitors to access the pavilion and capture a unique view of the city.

Create a seamless and legible connection from the room for Adelaide lane to the roof top.

Ensure a clear and safe separation from the active car parking floors.

Re-brand and address the facade of the building through a screen that can support the vertical integration of planting and other ‘greening’ measures.

Explore temporary activation of some of the lower car park floors for short term studio spaces.

Create a shared street environment with pedestrian priority. Vehicles + Bikes + Pedestrians share the same space.

Establish a public realm palette that compliments character of the heritage façades.

Integrate education and learning elements into the public realm.

Design for the change in levels and consider incorporating water sensitive design initiatives.

The Parklands Edge will be re-imagined as a new link that will take pedestrians from East Terrace into the Adelaide Botanic Park to the north and the Adelaide Riverbank. The challenge for this project is to achieve security while removing the visual barrier of a traditional fence. This space can create a bold new entry into the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.
