The vibrancy and continuity of Windsor Festival run hand-in-hand. Each year the programme varies, but the ethos and purpose remain the same: to entertain by providing enjoyable events for our audience. This year is no exception with a host of events which adhere to this aim and include something a little different to last year.
Venturing into the contemporary and jazz genres, we are excited to welcome the Hackney Colliery Band and Simon Spillett Quartet to Windsor Parish Church and Windsor & Eton Brewery respectively. We also begin a
four year programme of choral music this year with performances by Tenebrae and The Choir of St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Our flagship concert in the Waterloo Chamber with the Philharmonia Orchestra headlines Nathan Meltzer, the 16-year-old violinist from New York who won our International String Competition in March. Nathan is an extraordinary talent who not only took First Prize, but was also awarded the Audience Prize and will be playing Sibelius’s Violin Concerto.
We have an abundant Literary Series this autumn, with appearances from Jeffrey Archer, Terry Waite, poet Wendy Cope, Princess Josephine Loewenstein and Luke Harding. There will be a tribute to P D James with Simon Brett, Frances Fyfield and actor Roy Marsden, a private dining experience at Heston Blumenthal’s The Hind’s Head in Bray, and afternoon tea with Terry Pendry, Stud Groom to Her Majesty The Queen.
We hope that you will discover lots throughout the fortnight that appeals and look forward to sharing these festivities with you.

2017 marks the 200th anniversary of the tragic death in childbirth of Princess Charlotte and a turning point in British history.
Heir to the throne, Princess Charlotte was the granddaughter of King George III, famed for his bouts of madness, and the only child of King George IV, who spent more than £1million to transform Windsor Castle into a ‘Gothic’ masterpiece. On her death, her uncles abandoned their mistresses, married, and raced to produce the next sovereign of the House of Hanover.

Selling over 330 million copies of his books in 97 countries and in more than 37 languages, Jeffrey Archer is a man of many talents.
His latest novel, This Was a Man, is the seventh and final instalment of The Clifton Chronicles, a captivating series which has topped the bestseller lists around the world. With a new set of short stories, Tell Tale, out in November, he is the only author ever to have had number one successes in fiction, short stories, and non-fiction.
Join this master storyteller for afternoon tea and discover the secrets to his writing prowess.
The origins of Public Houses can be traced through the ages. In fact, the great British pub started life as a great Italian wine bar! It was the Romans who first brought roads, towns and pubs, known as tabernae, in AD43.
Hostelries have long been central to people’s lives and no more so than here in Windsor: records show the town was once home to 11 breweries and in 1577 there was one alehouse for every 150 people!
Take this guided tour with Debbie Keenan to discover more about Windsor’s varied collection of drinking establishments, past and present.

Roald Dahl was a man characterised by multiple identities. Moving between contrasting locations and social circles, his work was never appreciated by academics and educationalists during his lifetime. Yet despite facing the dilemma of championing the underdog versus seeking establishment approval, he never ceased to reimagine Wales in his work.
Children’s literature expert, Dr Ann Alston, will explore how Dahl’s complex relationship with his Anglo-Welsh heritage is subtly present throughout his writing and explain what a private joke at the end of The BFG says about the links the author had with Cumberland Lodge.

Formed in 2008, their third album, Sharpener, went into the jazz charts at number three. Their New Orleans-style line up of trumpets, trombones, saxes, sousaphone and two drummers, coupled with a name that pays homage to the British brass heritage, demonstrates a band rooted in tradition, with a thoroughly modern sound.

Princess Josephine Loewenstein has certainly enjoyed a life lived to the full.
A former ballerina, forced to give up her career because of her height, Princess Josephine had a childhood punctuated by privilege and austerity, spending much of the Second World War at Ledbury Park, her grandparents’ house in Herefordshire. Escaping to Rome and marrying Prince Rupert Loewenstein, she was introduced to a dolce vita lifestyle, as both participant and observer.
Spend a refreshing evening in her company as she casts a poignant look at the collage of memories, parties and people captured in her memoirs, Wind in My Hair.

The coming of Crossrail, the largest building project in Europe in recent times, is just the latest version of a very old east-west route to and from London.
Gillian Tindall, a writer and broadcaster known for her meticulous research, will explain how modern routes in and out of the capital overlay ancient roads and pathways. The names of ancient farms, manors and slums may now belong to our squares and tube stations, but in this illustrated talk Gillian will demonstrate how the places we know in the modern world, although apparently very changed, owe their debt to the past.

This inspiring curator-led talk introduces his music through annotated manuscripts, set amongst film posters, programmes and photographs.
With many items on display for the first time, highlights include the manuscript of The Padstow Lifeboat (1967), the Academy Award for the score of The Bridge over the River Kwai (1958) and the manuscript score of the Seventh Symphony (1973) – previously thought lost, yet remarkably rediscovered on eBay by Arnold’s daughter in 2014.

DARKNESS OVER GERMANYKurt Barling
Established by Amy Buller as a place to tackle social divisions through the exchange of views and constructive dialogue, Cumberland Lodge celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.
A pioneering young woman who defied her critics, Amy led groups of British intellectuals to Germany during the 1930s to confront the threat and appeal of the Nazis. Her subsequent book, Darkness over Germany, was rediscovered by BBC investigative journalist Professor Kurt Barling, who immediately recognised its stark warning.
Join him to explore how a message of hate fuelled a nation to unite and the significance her findings have in our current times.

MUSIC: WHAT IS IT AND WHAT IS IT FOR?Andrew Gant
VENUE Cumberland Lodge, Windsor Great Park
TIME 3pm
DURATION 1 hour
TICKET PRICE £12
Everybody loves music. But have you ever stopped to wonder exactly what music is?
What makes one sound music and another just noise? Do animals make music? And what is music for? Why do we choose to organise sound waves in certain ways? Is it something to do with their natural properties, or is it entirely a cultural invention of our own? Is music always a force for good in human society? And are some kinds of music better than others?
Using examples from medieval to modern, plainsong to birdsong, author Andrew Gant will explore all these questions taken from his latest book.

‘Beneath the splendour, Windsor Castle is more dangerous than a jungle’ wrote a guest in the 19th century.
Windsor has a long and illustrious history but it has not always been so. Behind the finery there have been dark times of war, plague, persecution, disease ... and ghosts both in the town and within the Castle.
With Debbie Keenan as your guide, walk the streets of a town that has seen hangings and burnings at the stake, as you hear stories of strange sightings in The Great Park and a Royal ghost spotted by The Queen.

Daniel Kharitonov has attracted attention as an ambitious and undeniably talented young pianist.
Born in the Russian Far East, he emerged at the very top of the Tchaikovsky International Competition in 2015 aged just 16 years old. Already enjoying an international career, he is known for his ability to charm an audience with powerful, compelling, and moving performances, full of refreshing ferocity and energy.
We look forward to welcoming this exceptional artist to Eton College’s stunning School Hall for an evening relishing in some of the most important and well-known piano repertoire.
Take a pleasant stroll around the area Great Park residents call 'home'. Look closer – there's far more to see and hear about here than meets the eye!
Learn of now-vanished artefacts, gardens, and buildings, where Royalty and the illustrious once played and partied the days away. Ancient routes past two grand houses, the home of the 'Cameleopard', a Royal School, 'recycled' Clubhouse, and splendid views of Windsor Castle. Observe the veteran trees, ponds, and vistas, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the Village – an 'oasis' from the hubbub of the South East – and the working heart of Windsor Great Park.

Established in 1837, when William IV was on the throne, Windsor and Eton Choral Society are one of the 10 oldest choral societies in the country. Supported by fine soloists and the internationally in demand Brandenburg Sinfonia, here they present Haydn’s supreme setting of the story of the Creation.
Completed when the composer was 65 years old, and producing his finest music, it is said there is no other major composition which challenges this wonderful and continuously entertaining musical masterpiece.
