A Thank You Note from Parish Coordinator Marlene Roberts

& Pastor Scott SchmidtWe must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right,

because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of everyone of you for one another is increasing. Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches

of God for your steadfastness and faith . . . 2 Thessalonians 1:3-4a

THANK YOU! Thank you from the depths of our hearts! The above words from the Apostle Paul to the church at Thessalonica express what we see and feel when we think of the faithful at All Saints. Do you realize all that we have done, and done for our neighbors, and done to the Glory of God? Let us tell you: since the middle of May we had over 140 individuals from All Saints help organize or work at various outreach events. This includes two benefits for medical issues, two funerals/funeral luncheons, Vacation Bible School, our 2nd Annual Church-Neighborhood Picnic, and the mission trip to St. Paul, MN, and even more. This is not counting those who simply attended these events or services, but this large group of volunteers helped make these areas of ministry happen. When you add this to all the volunteer effort and time shared regu-larly, this is amazing. Thanks also to those who help with the weekly and monthly min-istry events and services of All Saints. Again, thank you! Thanks be to God!

Praising God,

Pastor Scott Schmidt and Marlene Roberts

PS. At the Picnic, with 143 in attendance, we raised $914 for the local St. Vincent DePaul Society to help those in time of need.

A letter from Bishop Gary M. Wollersheim

Dear Friends, Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

As congregations begin fall activities and schedules, I would like to remind you about the upcoming annual “Discipleship Gatherings” (formerly known as “Mission Gather-ings”) which will be held in eight different conference locations throughout the synod.

Every congregational member is encouraged to attend one of these Gatherings which will provide an opportunity for lay and rostered people to gather together and talk about the churches’ seven Faith Practices (Worship, Pray, Give, Invite/Witness, Scrip-ture, Serve, and Encourage/Mentor). Followers of Jesus are inspired to develop practices and patterns for living that characterize a life that is devoted to daily discipleship. These seven common practices have been identified as key to model and nurture.

From the schedule below, please find the most convenient location and time for you and mark your calendar to attend. All gatherings will begin at 7 p.m. with registration at 6:30 p.m., except for Messiah, Galva on 11/14 which will begin at 4 p.m.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Choice ProgramHelping others is part of the mission of Thrivent. All Saints has benefited from Thrivent’s GivingPlus and Care in Congre-gation programs which provide matching funds to some of our fundraising activities such as the rummage sale and the youth spaghetti and chili dinners. Now, Thrivent has developed a program called Thrivent Choice. All Saints is invit-ing members who are able to help direct Thrivent funds, to remember All Saints as you designate points. Some Thrivent members have already received letters, others are still being processed. Please take whatever action you feel appropriate. If you have questions contact Bob Bran-son or Pastor Scott Schmidt.

Watoto Children’s ChoirThe Watoto Children’s Choir has toured internationally spreading a message of hope for Africa’s children. “Concerts of Hope” are a colorful and lively demon-stration of the life-changing love of God experienced by the children of Watoto. The concert is approximately one hour and fifteen minutes long, consisting of a multimedia presentation, songs, testimo-nies of the children and a few short videos. A love offering will be given to the general funds of the Watoto ministry. There will also be an opportunity to purchase some products related to the Watoto Child Care ministry, Inc. including but not limited to CD’s, DVD’s, T-shirts and African crafts.

The Book ClubJoin the book club discussion on Mon-day, September 27 at 1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The book club selec-tion chosen for September is The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.

The main character is the cunning and sensible Pre-cious Ramotswe who is the only lady private detective in Botswana. The book is witty, gentle and wise. It also gives the reader a look at African men and women and their lives in the dry, hot country of Botswana as we hear of different cases that Precious Ramotswe solves. It blends well with the Watoto Children’s Choir who will be presenting their concert on Thursday, September 23. There is copy of the book in the church library, and it is a fairly quick read.

Join our discussion as we swing back into fall and a more regular schedule.

All Saints Golf OutingA sign up sheet will be on bulletin #2 in the Fellowship Hall for the golf outing at Prarie View Golf Course on Sunday, September 19 at 1:00 p.m. Open to all.

Bibles for Youth We need to hear from the families of youth who plan to receive first communion in the spring. The purpose of our Bible presentation program is to encourage our youth in the study of their faith. On Rally Day (Sept. 12) at either service, we will present all children who will be beginning their FIRST COMMUNION STUDY with their special Contemporary English Version (CEV) Bible. They can use it during Sunday School and in First Communion instruction which begins in the spring.

By Tuesday, Sept. 8, please RSVP that your child is interested in receiving communion. This will allow us to have their Bibles ready for Rally Day. (Typically, First Communion instruction is offered for students in third grade, but families may opt to have their youth receive this instruction at any age. All are welcome.)

On Saturday, September 18, the students preparing for First Communion and their parents are invited to Bible Introduction Classes. We will meet at 11:00 a.m. for an introduction to the Old Testament. We then break for pizza. And at 12:30 p.m., we meet for part two, an introduction to the New Testament. We conclude around 1:15 p.m. Students and their parents will use the same Bibles received on Rally Day. These classes will be beneficial as Sunday School begins to help establish good Bible study skills and will compliment First Communion Classes which will be held in the spring prior to Easter.

High School ConfirmationHigh School Confirmation is for youth who did not complete confirmation during Middle School but who wish to pursue being a confirmed member. This class has been meeting over the summer and now that school is back in session, the plan is to meet on each Sunday at 4:00 p.m. If you know of a high school youth who may be interested, speak to Pastor Scott Schmidt or come to the next meeting. We will help any new comers catch-up on our lessons.

Middle School ConfirmationOn Rally Day, Sunday, September 12, at 9:15 a.m., all youth and their parents who plan to participate in Middle School Confirmation (7th-8th grade) need to attend an information gathering. We meet at 9:15 a.m. in the area across from the kitchen. If you are interested but did not receive a letter please contact Pr. Scott Schmidt. (We will meet every Sunday at 9:15 a.m. during the school year and also for ten Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. - the first and third Wednesdays, of November through March.)

Also, the youth who are beginning Middle School Confirmation will be presented their (NRSV) Lutheran Study Bibles at either worship service on September 12, Rally Day. So, youth beginning confirmation this year should also be at one the worship services on Rally Day.

Finance Report Summer is here and we are all enjoying

the warm weather. What that also means for All Saints is what I call the “July Stew-ardship Doldrums.” Historically, July is a very low giving month for our congrega-tion and 2010 was no exception.

We have done well with targeted giv-ing. We have paid off large amounts of the HVAC and electrical projects, pur-chased a drum set for the Praise Team, acquired new Confirmation robes, and so much more—all due to your generosity and commitments to those projects and. Where we have fallen short is with our general giving.

Our expenses can be inconsistent, but the need to cover our mortgage, utility bills and salaries is fairly flat and fixed. We also have benevolence commitments to the Synod and other areas that have not been fully funded due to our shortfalls in Stewardship receipts.

Right now we are about $7,500 be-hind in benevolence to the Synod and we have not donated anything toward our $1,600 commitment to summer ministry at LOMC. We have expenses of about $1,000 for education materials and bibles, and about $3,000 in other bills needing payment. We ask and pray for your sup-port for these financial needs. If you are behind in giving and can make it up in full or even in part, please do so. If you can afford to give even more than you have pledged, we ask that you consider doing so. If you cannot we understand. We know that many of you are struggling to make ends meet. If you can give of your wallets, thank you so much; but giving of your time and talents are equally impor-tant and there are always needs for that sort of giving, too.

Giving always picks up in November and December. We usually are able to catch up, but there are current needs that cannot wait for the end of the year.

Thank you for your kindness and sup-port. In the thirty plus years of our exis-tence, the Congregation has always met our needs and I know that with God’s grace that this will continue. We are so blessed!

Yours in Christ,Steve Jones
