Hopefully, if you can stick with this pattern throughout Lent, you will develop a routine that you donʼt want to stop when Easter has passed. The ideas in this booklet are simply suggestions to get you started, you may want to change one habit for something else – itʼs up to you. After all, itʼs your relationship with God, so you should develop it in your own way. If you can do each ʻpracticeʼ at the same time each day, it will probably help you to stay focussed and committed. (Tip – you could set reminders on your mobile phone!)

A spiritual 5-a-day for Lent Just as it is beneficial for our health to develop the habit of eating five portions of fruit and vegetables each day, so it is good for our spiritual health to develop good daily habits as part of balanced, healthy spiritual diet.

Practice 1 – Read, learn and discover Suggested time = before breakfast The plan is to read through the whole of Johnʼs gospel by Easter Sunday. The reading plan on the back of the booklet will keep you on track with this. As you read, try to notice something new in each section – a word, or phrase, or aspect that you havenʼt noticed before.

Practice 2 - Draw close, listen, sort Suggested time = before you leave the house for school/work Spend two minutes (time it!) in silence. Focus on what God wants from you today, allow him to clarify your thoughts, and order your priorities.

Practice 3 - Submit, receive, refresh Suggested time = lunchtime Say the Lordʼs Prayer – silently or out loud.

Practice 4 - Thank, give, serve Suggested time = at the end of school/work Give thanks for something that has happened during the day

Practice 5 - Reflect, write, renew Suggested time = any time in the evening Get a notebook and write down how you feel about the day, what happened, what inspired you. Then think about how you plan to approach tomorrow.
