Welcomeit’s difficult to believe that it’s February already and that winter is nearly over. At trend towers, we’ve been looking forward to a full calendar of trend events, with plans being drawn up for our life with style Awards, fashion shows, networking events and much more.

We’re also working on bringing you more features on our website over this year, since many readers have told us they wish that Trend came out more often.

The fashion team have been following the shows and are looking forward to London Fashion week, so we can bring you all the latest fashion, accessories, jewellery and shoes.

As usual, we’ll be bringing you the best that life in the North-east of Scotland has to offer, from historic buildings, to great restaurants, ways to spend your time, the best places to spend a holiday or a long weaken, the newest beauty products, places to enjoy with the family, music and people.

All in all, 2012 looks like being another busy, but wonderful, year!

Vanity in Inverurie opened its doors in November 2008 and decided to celebrate their 3rd birthday in style. Cheryl decided to place live models in the windows for the day. She said “I wanted to do something fun and exciting to celebrate. Everything is so doom and gloom right now and this year has been our toughest year with the Vat increase and the country deep in the recession I just wanted to spread good cheer and excitement in the shop and around Inverurie. The response to the live models was fantastic and a big hit for both for the men and women walking past. The girls definitely stopped the traffic and gave the town something to talk about!!”

Cheryl wants to thank all her customers and friends for their continued support and here’s to many years to come.

Lingerie lovers will be happy to discover that, De-Zire, one of the North East’s leading lingerie stores has moved to discrete new premises on Inverurie High Street. The new store is four times bigger than De-Zire’s previous location, allowing many more tempting ranges to go on display.

DeZire’s owner, Susan Evans, has assembled a superb selection of brands from all over the world, including HOT Milk, the luxury New Zealand maternity bra range, Curvy Kate for the more voluptuous figure, Lepel, Charnos and a great range of shapewear designed to smooth out the lumps and bumps . Susan even stocks Calvin Klein for the boys.

De-Zire is the only stockists of French brands Lejaby and Aubade in Aberdeenshire and the sole UK stockist – other than Selfridges – for the exclusive Nicole DeCharles line. De-Zire also carries a number of bras specially designed for use after reconstructive surgery or mastectomy.

Susan’s staff are all expertly trained in bra fitting, an essential service, since more than

seven in ten woman wears the wrong bra size, often leading to a less than flattering décolletage or even pain.

“Wearing right style of bra, that’s been properly fitted, gives women an instant confidence boost, making them walk taller, look slimmer and more pert,” explains Susan Evens, De-Zire’s owner. “Many women wear the wrong size or shape of bra, in part because they don’t realise that breasts change size along with changes in lifestyle, weight, hormone levels or other factors.

De-Zire also stocks a range of saucy dressing up outfits by Leg Avenue that are perfect for fancy dress parties or just putting a smile on someone special’s face. Go on, be a boudoir babe! 25 High StreetInverurie AB51 3QAT: 01467 670835E: [email protected]

Costume jewellery is a cheap and effective way to recreate this trend. Murano glass and resin make for impressive statement rings and chunky cuffs. Such a versatile trend can be worn for work, a wedding or a night out. For the ultimate tribal vibe team with a headscarf, oversized shades and a wicker tote. Make every outfit spectacular this season with some daring and vibrant tribal jewellery.

Thistle do nicely for Fenner & COBURNFenner & Coburn have moved into a fantastic new shop just yards away from the premises they’ve shared with Rosie Thistle’s Tea Room for the past couple of years.

The new shop, which is just along from Bellino shoes on Thistle Street, means that Kirsty and Heather have been able to bring in more lines, which is great news for the North East’s lovers of quality brands such as Tom Joules, the boutique range attached to the more familiar Joules brand, and the ever popular Danish brand Masai Clothing. In fact, the bright and airy new store is about two-thirds bigger and opens till 5.30pm, meaning more choice and more time to shop!

Fenner and Coburn has something to appeal to women from twenty to seventy, who want a level of service and quality that can’t be found in high street chains, but who still appreciate value. The spring ranges are in store now and in keeping with their original vision, are priced to suit everyone’s pocket.

The new store also features an expanded footwear collection with great designs from United Nude, Irregular Choice,Fly, Moda in Pelle, Joules, Vidoretta and Vanilla Moon. There is a focus this summer on wedges as these prove to be a great summer staple

for both work and holiday wardrobes The shop carries the largest selection of Masai Clothing in the North East as well as stocking jeans from Not Your Daughter’s

Jeans, which promise to make you look an entire size smaller, thanks to their hidden lift/tuck technology.

The staff have retained their friendly, approach, happy to allow you to browse unhindered or to provide a hand if you’re looking for inspiration. So prized is their advice that Fenner & Coburn have become well known for their individual and group style sessions, which can be arranged by phoning the shop. They also frequently do Style nights for charities, raising over £4000 last year alone. Kirsty is now looking to expand her ranges to include a small collection of homeware goods and gifts.

The new shop makes Fenner & Coburn an essential stop on any shopping trip if you’re looking for well designed relaxed outfits that are ideal for the weekend or want to look stylish on the school run.

The concept of the sandwich has been around for centuries but it was the 18th century English aristocrat, John Montagu, 4th Earl of sandwich, who coined the term ‘sandwich’, so if it’s good enough for an Earl it’s good enough for Trend. I set out on a sandwich safari to sample some of the best sandwiches this city has to offer.

We like to keep it local here at Trend so if you are looking for a hearty sandwich made with fresh and local ingredients the Foodstory on Rose Street is the place to try. They have a great selection of breads and rolls from Aberdeen’s The Breadmaker with a variety of delicious fillings. My personal favourite is the seeded roll filled with a moreish free range egg mayo and topped withsliced tomato, yum!

If you fancy a change from bread then Prego have the perfect alternative, the wrap, they are by far some of the best wraps I have ever tasted! With thirteen different fillings to choose from you can be sure there’s at least one to suit every taste. Each wrap is made to order and served toasty warm, which meant the brie in my ‘French Connection’ wrap was all melty and paired perfectly with some bacon and cranberry sauce.

As well as our local favourites Aberdeen is now home to a Pret a Manger. They may be a chain but the refreshing thing about Pret is that they are committed to preparing the food onsite everyday using all fresh, natural ingredients. They also have a fantastic menu to choose form, I went for the freshly baked, crisp baguette with pole & line caught tuna mayo & cucumber, one of my favourites whenever I visit a Pret.

All in all I am one satisfied customer and look forward to my next sandwich wherever it may be from.

The Best Sandwiches Restaurant REVIEWUdNy ArMs, NEwbUrGH

> rEVIEw by NEIL FINdLAy

Meals are available both in the bar and restaurant. We selected the bar. Titled the Lounge Whisky Bar, the decor is in keeping with the nautical theme with wooden panelled seating and alcoves, which creates an intimate ambience to what was an already busy room.

The menu offers five starters and ten main courses. I chose the Soup De Jour - a steaming bowl of traditional Scotch Broth, so welcoming with frost on the ground in the midwinter sunshine.

For my wife it was the Home-made Chicken Liver Pate with Chutney and Brioche - all beautifully presented. The wine-list offers a varied selection of European and New World wines from which we selected a steely dry Chablis, to accompany our lunch.

For the main course I could not see beyond the Beer Battered Haddock complete with fries, mushy peas, tartar sauce and lemon. The fish was crisp, generously proportioned and to add a twist of authenticity, served on yesterday's

newspaper. My wife predictably went for Rump Steak and chips with onion rings, sautéed mushrooms and chips. Two classic dishes well prepared and attentively served.

Having walked the Forvie Sands prior to lunch, dessert had been earned although sharing was the order of the day. Local legend has it that Sticky Toffee Pudding was invented at the Udny Arms Hotel - In error! Some mistake! The Udny's Sticky Toffee Pudding with Clotted Cream Ice Cream is a signature dish, elegantly presented and delicious.

So head north soon, enjoy a brisk beach walk followed by a hearty Udny Arms lunch.

The Udny Arms Hotel is a popular and friendly place, situated in Newburgh a mere 20 minute drive north of Aberdeen. The hotel overlooks the Forvie sands Nature reserve and ythan river estuary - a haven of tranquillity.

Q & A's

Dave MoreHead Chef @ Musa

38

chef focus

Trend puts Dave More, Head Chef at Aberdeen’s popular restaurant and music venue Musa, under the grill...

How would you describe the style offood at Musa? I’d say we offer an eclectic menu inspired by world cuisine with interesting interpretations of Scottish staples. We use small local suppliers and you’ll find that our dishes are matched to beers from some of the best micro-breweries in the world.

What chefs or cooking styles have influenced you and how has your own cooking developed over the course ofyour career? The first chef I worked for was Tom Lewis at Monachyle Mhor in Perthshire. From day one I learned the importance of freshness and locality of ingredients. We cooked big bold flavours often sourced that day from the garden, farm or local woodland. The amazing thing with working with food is the near limitless abundance of styles and flavours used throughout the world; by encompassing this each day is a fresh new vibrant learning experience for myself and my team.

What are your culinary ambitions?Having worked at MUSA from day one, I want to continue to offer up the freshest food possible and to continue to build on the vibe that my team and I have built up. I really enjoy working with great Craft Brewers from around the globe and guest chefs on our monthly dinners, too.

What's your own favourite food? I am a lover of seafood. My father was a fisherman so I was brought up on the freshest of fish.

How do you come up with newideas for dishes?I read a lot of food blogs online by both professionals and amateurs. I also listen to

Page 39: Trend Feb / March 2012

customers and often ask “What would you like to see on the menu at Musa?” I forage a lot locally during various seasons and love the challenge of incorporating wild garlic, mushrooms, seaweeds and berries that I have gathered in to menus.

Ever had a culinary disaster you'dlike to tell us about?I once had a kitchen porter many moons ago who strained consommé down the drain rather than into a pan! The problem was it was Christmas Day and it was too late to rectify the problem. I had to remove the dish from the menu at the last minute, so I ended up with a very red face and an even more annoyed manager berating me.

What three essential qualities do you need to be a top chef? You need strong organisation and communication skills and to be highly motivated and happy in your workplace. That’s 3 or 4 depending on how you look at it but they are all key skills.

Tim Hieghton-Jackson and Kris Lovie join founder Rob James to produce its 5 beers including its flagship product ‘MacBeth’. Investment in new equipment and increase in beer production has meant a number of local venues around the north-east are eager to take on the traditional craft beer all named after Pictish kings. Brewery Manager Tim said: “With a new look created by Core Design we are excited about our ‘re-launch’. The beer has the same unique taste that has given the brewery its followers and we are busy developing some

additional products to add to our family. Deeside Brewery aims to make its beer accessible but will remain be a craft beer for those that enjoy our unique tasting notes. “We have big plans this year including a beer festival in July in

Royal Deeside at Potarch Hotel. It has been a positive move for the industry as craft beer has been put in the spotlight by businesses such as BrewDog. Beer drinkers want less

mainstream and more craft which is what we are focused on.”

By day, you’ll find Alastair Buchan advising clients on becoming financially well organised in his role as a Senior Partner at St. James Place, the wealth management specialists; the weekends, however, area completely different story.

For the past two years, Alastair has been training to trek to Everest Base Camp to raise funds for the St. James’s Foundation, a trust which has donated almost £20 million to children’s charities and hospices locally, nationally and internationally since it started. St James’s Place matches all the funds raised by its staff pound for pound.

“I’ve been fascinated by Everest since I was a small boy and was thrilled to be chosen to join the company’s expedition team as it gives us the opportunity to raise £500,000. We’ve been training with one of the most experienced Everest climbers. It’s a three week expedition and as one of the support team, I’ll be going up to 19,500 feet, so I’m hoping that our clients and Trend’s readers will offer their support,” Alastair enthused.

If you’re looking for something different for a loved one, then you can’t go wrong at Aberdeen’s newest florist. Suzie Rodger at Blooms and Balloons offers a wonderful selection of flowers, coupled with a fun range of balloons and balloon decorations that will brighten up any event or special occasion.

Suzie started her career as a stained glass artist and since becoming a florist a few years ago, she has trained with some of Europe’s leading floral designers, including Wally Klett and Carles Fontanillas, so it’s no surprise that her design-led arrangements look divine.

Suzie offers bouquets and displays for weddings, funerals, corporate areas and events, as well as custom made balloon decorations and gifts.

If you’re looking for something more inspiring for Valentine’s Day call or visit Suzie at the shop to discuss as she has some great ideas. Consider a custom arrangement, her unique heart shaped mirrors specially imported from Mexico, or one of the store’s fabulous balloons in a box. Balloon gifts also go down well for birthdays, Mother’s Day and to celebrate new arrivals.

“I just love making my customers happy,” enthused Suzie, “I love knowing that I’m producing something special that makes people smile.”

Suzie also stocks a great selection of cards and gifts, including Cocoa Ooze’s handmade chocolates, as well as hosting a selling exhibition of art which changes every couple of months, so there’s always something fresh and exciting in stock.

If you’d like to learn how to arrange flowers, then book into one of the monthly evening workshops. They’re great for team building or groups as well as individuals. The workshops offer a varied programme of how to make different floral arrangements and at the end of the evening you take away your creations to brighten up your home

A major change in how financial management services are provided comes into effect next year. Following a five-year lead in, the Retail Distribution Review is being introduced to improve the customer’s experience when accessing financial services.

While some firms will make the necessary changes to their business this year, Aberdeen-based Russell Gibson Financial Management has already taken steps to meet the new legislation.

When Russell Gibson was established in 2008, directors Alan Ball and Tom Hyslop decided to structure their business process and model to meet the forthcoming legislative changes, and operate predominately on a recurring fee basis – the model the industry is now adopting.

Both of the independent financial management company’s directors are qualified CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER CM practitioners, which is above the level required within the new legislation. They have held this qualification since 2007, before the legislation was mooted.

When this is aligned to their experience in other professional fields – Alan was previously a practising private client solicitor and Tom worked in corporate finance – clients can be assured of receiving a wide sphere of professional, impartial services.

Alan said, “This is what we have always been committed to providing, and it is encouraging that the industry is finally following suit. Our clients receive impartial advice about their finances and then ongoing help and support in order to achieve their life goals.”

James Kelly is fast building a reputation as one of the North East’s most sought-after photographers, but you’re more likely to see his work in galleries, homes or Horse and Hound than in Trend.

That’s because James specialises in equine portraits as well as fine art landscapes, rather than fashion shoots.

James loves working with his equine models. “I have always loved photographing animals, and find that every horse has its own personality and every photograph of a horse is different. A great shot comes down to timing, lighting, composition and capturing the essence of the subject, whether it’s a family portrait, a champion hunter, a wedding party or a landscape.”

James has recently branched out to offer photography lessons. He runs an editing class and location classes where aspiring students learn out in the field rather than in a classroom, and intensive holiday courses in spectacular settings. Gift vouchers are available for both photoshoots and photography lessons and his one-day introduction class is a great

starting point. Classes start from just £30 per session and James offers a discount to students booking a course of ten classes.

When he’s not working, James can be found out on the hills relaxing with his camera. “I love going to a location and just sitting for hours waiting for the right lighting to capture the right view. Landscape photography is very unpredictable and you have to rely on Mother Nature to grant you the right condition”, James added. His landscape images can be bought online from www.durnogallery.co.uk where James shows his own work alongside other photographers and thatof his students.

So, whether you want to learn to take great pictures, or have a lasting memento of your family, horse, wedding or a special place, with James you can be sure everything will be picture perfect.

How do you follow up a vehicle so perfectly pitched at the premium market that it has sold over 12 million models since being launched in 1975? That was the problem facing the designers and engineers charged with producing the new BMW 3 Series models and it’s a challenge they’ve certainly risen to. The new BMW 3 Series Sedan launched just before Valentine’s Day and strengthens the North East’s enduring love affair with the marque.

The new 3 Series Sedan offers a choice of refined, fuel-efficient engines that operate with the new BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. A full-hybrid version of the new BMW 3 Series will also be available in autumn 2012.

The new BMW 3 Series Sedan exceeds the performance of the previous model, but is more fuel-efficient. The vehicle also offers greater driving comfort and is noticeably more spacious. Smart lightweight construction ensures that the vehicle is still up to 45 kilograms lighter than the previous model, depending on the engine.

In combination with fuel-saving EfficientDynamics technologies, this also has a positive impact on consumption: For instance, the 320d EfficientDynamics Edition with an engine output of 163 hp uses only 4.1 litres/100 kilometres in the EU test cycle, with CO2 emissions of 109 g/km. The BMW 335i with six-cylinder engine and 306 hp has a fuel consumption of between 7.2 and

7.9 litres/100 kilometres in the EU test cycle, depending on vehicle configuration. The Auto Start Stop function comes as standard for all engine-transmission versions.

The new models let you choose different drive style set-up offering a sportier or more eco-friendly ride, but, as usual it’s the extras that make the 3 Series special. We liked the head up display, which projects information onto the windscreen and the ConnectedDrive infotainment and assistance services.

With outstand performance, handling and comfort, we’re giving the new 3 Series five stars.

FIVE STARSFOR NEW3 SERIES Whether you fancy yourself as the

next Lewis Hamilton or the Stig, then the Grampian Automobile Club is the place to get started in speed motorsports. The club was formed in 1995 and now runs hill climbs at Fintray and sprints at Alford over three weekends.

Chairman George Ritchie explained, “We have about a hundred cars –anything from Corsas or Minis to Ferraris and racing cars - at each event. The club is here to help people get started with information about licenses, clothing, safety modifications and everything else you need. It’s a fun and friendly environment, where beginners get a lot of help and encouragement, but we’re all still keen to win!”

“Motorsports can be an expensive hobby, but it’s also possible to get started and have a great time without spending a fortune. It’s not just for men either. We have many female club members and run a ladies championship each year.”

A former bakery in Lumsden may not be the first place you’d go looking for a world-class sculpture facility, but for more than thirty years, the Scottish Sculpture Workshop has been attracting artists from all over the world to create new work here in the North-East.

Artist Fred Bushe, OBE RSA, converted the bakery into studio spaces and accommodation for artists back in 1979. Thanks to a consortium of creative agencies supporting major capital developments, the Scottish Sculpture Workshop now has extensive facilities for working in a variety of mediums. SSW provides one of the only artist access foundries in the UK and staff to teach various casting techniques, metal and wood fabrication. The centre also offers metal and wood workshops, a ceramics studio, fabrication room, glass kiln, and a resources library, mobile radio station and recording equipment, studios andresidential facilities.

The SSW’s Creative Producer, Emily Wyndham Gray, is keen for more people to discover what the workshop has to offer, explaining, “You don’t need to be a professional sculptor to take advantage of the workshop, as the centre offers public access classes including non-residential and residential courses. We have something for everyone from complete beginners to advanced students in stained glass, ceramics, metal casting and fabrication.

“There are many ways to become involved at SSW. We have regular open events, from potluck dinners to public iron pours, exhibitions and artist projects. You can also take a workshop or course, come and spend time creating work as a resident or day artist, undertake an internship or volunteer. People are also welcome to take a tour of the facilities and meet resident artists; open access hours are Mon to Fri 10am to 5pm, and weekends by appointment”.

You can find out more about SSW events and courses at www.ssw.org.uk or by calling 01464 861372

“In 2000, I found myself living in the country with my husband, kids and a menagerie of cats, dogs, hens and pigs and I taught myself some basic sewing techniques when my three children were young. I was just making simple things like homework bags and baby bibs. I’ve always been keen on trying a lotof new things but I’m not the best at following instructions!

“I’d always been interested in quilting, but previously I’d had no time to take classes as I worked as a primary school teacher. I took a few rather complicated classes after 2005 but missed out on many of the fundamental beginner’s techniques, so I’ve taught myself.

“Quilting has become fashionable again all over the world - quilters communicate via the internet, blogs and Facebook. Some quilts are still traditionally made by hand for beds but there are many art quilters or textile artists using the latest machines and gadgets. It’s wonderful that quilts are gradually being accepted into the art world.

Both the V&A in London and the Metropolitan in New York have held exhibitions recently and there are specialist museums and major quilting festivals in Birmingham, Texas and Tokyo Japan which feature contemporary work.

“Much of my work is inspired by the natural landscapes around me. I’ve also made pieces inspired by everything from architecture, the way colours work together, interesting fabrics and even motifs from wallpaper patterns. For some reason I get lots of ideas when I’m walking the dogs.

“I start with a very rough sketch then start making the piece. I often change the design as I go along – and there’s always something new to learn. For my own projects, I enjoy a challenge - taking an idea and seeing how large and fun it can become. I get quite carried away when I’m working. I guess that’s why I’ve made a quilted yurt and a Smart Car!

“I also really enjoy teaching beginners to get started and helping competent quilters to stretch their quilting skills. I’m fortunate to have been invited to teach some of my techniques and ideas to groups of established quilters both here and in America. “The easiest way for people to get started in quilting is to get in touch with the Quilters Guild of the British Isles to find out about quilt teachers or local groups. Alternatively, find a basic book at the library or contact me if you’re interest in classes.

“I love seeing my projects in print in quilting and textiles magazines and I find teaching and talking about my work very satisfying and there’s nothing I enjoy more than working on a new quilt”. If you’d like a special quilt to commemorate an event, or for your home, then Linzi is happy to discuss commissions. After repeatedly hearing this small market town referred to as a premier shopping destination, I decided to make my way northwest to find out for myself. Within minutes of my arrival, I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. The town centre boasts so many specialty shops; it would be a struggle not to find something for everyone.

For the younger lads and lasses, there’s Maddi’s, offering a unique selection of children’s clothing and giftware. Around the corner, you’ll find Partridge’s, overflowing with a fantastic range of countrywear from

popular names like Joules, Animal, and Hunter. Scotch Corner sells all things Scottish, Thru the Keyhole all things equestrian, and Turriff Jewellers all things sparkly. If you fancy a genuine department-store experience, you could spend an entire afternoon browsing through all that Celebrations of Turriff hasto offer.

Shopping can be hungry work, so a visit to some of Turriff’s quaint local eateries was practically a necessity. A mid-morning coffee in Celebrations gave me a real boost and, to see me through the afternoon, I ate a lovely lunch

in the Country Kitchen Café. An evening meal seemed a step too far, but I did make a mental note to return sometime to The Fife Arms, which stands proudly in the square in Turriff, and enjoyed a favorable review from one of Trend’s gourmet writers.

My afternoon of shopping proved very enjoyable, indeed, and I made my way home with a fair few treasures as reminders. But the greatest treasure of all was Turriff itself – a shopping destination I definitely plan tovisit again.

TreasureHunting inTurriffAdmittedly, I enjoy shopping as much as most women, and certainly more than my husband would like. I just love finding the perfect gift or hunting down a great bargain, but what I really take pleasure in is discovering a new place to shop – somewhere away from the city bustle that offers boutique-style shopping in a relaxed setting. Enter Turriff.

Despite its reputation for glitz and glamour, a relative playground for adults with an array of sports activities available, bars, clubs and restaurants in abundance, look a little deeper and much thought has gone in to keeping the little ones occupied both dayand night.

After a little investigating as to what it would offer my daughter we took a trip to Kidzania in the Dubai Mall. This mini world theme park is where children can play at being grown ups, trying out various occupations such as doctor, dentist, radio presenter, bank teller... the list is endless.

Whilst doing this they also earn money, the currency being Kidzania KidZos, which they use to go to art school, beauty school and take part in a variety of other activities. Our daughter was lost in her own little world for most of the morningand tearing her away provedrather difficult.

We stayed at the Address Hotel in the Marina which is a smaller neighbourhood, something which Dubai is now focussing on, and there was certainly more than enough to

entertain us in and around this area without being lured to the busier uptown district with its big attractions.

The Address is attached to the Marina Mall which offers a wide variety when it comes to that point of the holiday when a little retail therapy is required, fashion for all the family, beauty and pampering (with little lady packages too!) coffee shops, restaurants and a fantastic cinema.

With the pleasurable temperatures at this time of year, you can enjoy being outdoors and the Marina Walk was right on our doorstep. This is the main thoroughfare which runs the whole length of the Marina and you will find it busy with people taking a stroll or, for those wanting to keep fit, it’s a great jogging and cycling track. If you’d rather relax and people watch there is an unlimited choice of restaurants and cafes to keep the whole family happy, all with outdoor dining. Children are made to feel very welcome in most of the restaurants.

Dubai has earned a reputation for big is beautiful, but in our experience their facilities and welcome for the little people is huge too.

Trend 1912Finding an old newspaper made Alison Daniels wonder how it compared to Trend.

The Weekly Free Press and Aberdeen Herald may not have such a snappy title as Trend, but it’s amazing to see how the interests of Aberdonians in 1912 mirror those of Trend readers today.

Back in 1912, we were as keen to shop and we loved a bargain. John Dunn’s had a footwear clearance, while Sangster & Henderson held a four day Rummage and Jumble Sale, with prices from sixpence to five shillings that doubtless attracted a crowd.

Potholes annoyed travellers even a century ago, but Gilcomston Pack and Raeburn Place were just being tarring and we’ll bet your daily commute is a

breeze compared to taking the mail gig to Methlick each morning at 4.50am, arriving about 8.35.

Trend’ 1912’s Society Pages would have carried features on Knowles and Sons’ sale of oranges and a charity concert at the YMCA which both raised funds for the widows and orphans of the Crimond Steam liner disaster. We might also have covered the cake and wine banquet – an idea that should be revived forthwith - following the launch of a new ship in the harbour.

In the courts, one errant youth was sentenced to a birching, while a teenager in Lumsden appeared on a drunk and disorderly charge after

downing “four prints of whisky”.

Of course, some things are rather different. Ads urged young men to head out to Canada, Australia and South Africa to pursue exciting careers and there were many more public meetings and societies in the pre-electronics age. Cults and Stoneywood both had literary societies, we still had a workhouse and a lunatic asylum, fires and industrial accidents were almost daily occurrences and Trend 1912 would have been carrying ads for rupture trusses, corsets and patent pink pills!

The countryside is littered with ‘antiques this way’ signs, that promise much and deliver nothing other than bric-a-brac, but – ever dedicated to my quest for the perfect country shopping experience – I followed signs to Tarland and the minute I stepped over the threshold of the warehouse I knew this place was different.

Furniture and lighting is the focus – not just bits and pieces – and there is a vast amount of it, all lovingly restored in the on-site workshop

of this long-standing family business. There is furniture from all eras – Victorian, Georgian, Edwardian, Regency – in all finishes – mahogany, rosewood, walnut, satinwood, oak – and in all sizes.

Barely in the door, I was faced with vast armoires and wardrobes, stunning desks (writing, knee-hole, roll top), and chairs, stools and chaise lounges that have been carefully reupholstered in fabric that is nicer than anything I have seen on the high street.

What makesTower Antiques evenbetter is that the furniture iscomplemented by a genuinely charming selection of small collectables.

I recommend a first trip around to take in all of the big pieces, and a second trip – a much slower trip – to make sure you don’t miss any of the silver, chandeliers, ornaments, mirrors, paintings, or china.

And you can’t leave without a getting a demonstration of the old working music box…. I’m not going to say any more about it because I don’t want to ruin the surprise.

instead of profiling a singular musical talent from Aberdeen, this issue i’d like to salute a small but dedicated team of local individuals who have been responsible for consistently bringing some of the most exciting, entertaining and downright inspiring musical acts around, to the silver City.

Since 2003 Interesting Music Promotions (IMP) has added vibrancy to Aberdeen’s cultural landscape with a deceptively simple mission statement: to bring ‘an eclectic range of live music to venues in and around Aberdeen’.

With approximately 250 events under their belt to date, they are responsible for scores of unforgettable evenings across the range of musical genres and have earning a loyal following along the way.

In recent years, IMP have brought us up-close-and-personal with beloved American acts like Richmond Fontaine, The Fruitbats (The Shins’ side project), Vetiver and last year – incredibly – the wonderfully eccentric tUnE-yArDs (who later featured at the top end of Rolling Stone/Time/NME’s best of 2011 lists).Closer to home, IMP have proved they have their finger on the pulse of the

new Scottish scene with gigs from Roddy Woomble, Lone Pigeon, The Phantom Band as well as Mercury Award nominees King Creosote and Polar Bear in the same period.

“We grew up loving live music and the John Peel show,” co-founder Mike Tyers tells me, explaining the ethos behind IMP. “In a similar spirit we find fresh, exciting acts from around the world and bring them to Aberdeen. We try to create a positive, welcoming atmosphere on our nights. We want to people to leave with smiles ontheir faces!”

IMP promotes their upcoming shows via handy, entertainingly informative emails. If you’re a fan of live music and the least bit curious to know what’s going on in Aberdeen, I recommend you sign up to their mailing list.

To do so, drop them an email at [email protected] Otherwise, check www.facebook.com/interestingmusicpromotions.

Their next show is on the 1st March with much hyped Scottish singer Adam Stafford (another one whose album topped numerous best of 2011 lists). See you there!

competition

Kick startyour fitnesscampaignBy now, the chances are that your resolution to get fitter and healthier in 2012 has suffered a little slippage. You can’t count bicep curls repetitions as exercise when you have a chocolate bar in your hand, as we’ve discovered. If your bathroom scales have started to whimper as you approach and your muffin top’s more of a mega-muffin these days, then now’s actually a better time to start thinking about a healthier lifestyle.

The gyms are emptier and the nights are getting a bit longer and there’s a whole world of ways to get fit in your own home, too. We’ve rounded up the latest ideas to help you get in shape.

Zumba classes are a fun way to get toned. If you’d rather shake it like Shakira at home, then give the Zumba® Fitness Exhilarate DVD collection a go. The seven-disc DVD collection is packed with brand new fast paced routines from salsa, reggaeton, calypso, cumbia, belly dance and merengue all set to lively Latin rhythms that will get anyone hooked. It’s also got a section to help you learn the steps. It’s about £60 from www.zumbafitness.com

A good sports bra is fundamental to any fitness campaign, especially if you have curves, so we were impressed by Panache’s latest offering. The company specialises in larger cup sizes, so you can be sure of getting a flattering, yet supportive result. It’s available in up to an H cup and costs around £39 from lingerie shops and department stores.

What to wear to the gym or for a trek outside is also problematic, with the many of us opting for a baggy t-shirt or ill-advised outfits that mean we look like the love-child of Barbie and the Michelin Man. Thankfully, Odlo offer a range of well styled exercise clothing that come in muted shades as well as brights. We like this base layer combo which offers an

ergonomic fit, odour prevention and supreme comfort thanks to the 3D knitted fabric. The top is available in sizes XS to XL and is £68 from odlo.com, with the matching leggings for £55.

Now, we’ll admit that Trend isn’t generally to be found hill walking – and won’t be until someone builds a shoe shop at the top of every mountain – but it’s a great way to get fit and spend some time with friends and family. These new Ambler lightweight hiking boots from Keen will put a spring in your step whatever the pace or destination. It’s designed for comfort and available in either a waxed suede or textile mesh upper. It’s available from Tiso for £85 for the suede version and £80 for the mesh finish.

If you want to improve your core stability, then give a CoolBoard a go. It’s a balance board that’s been used by surfers and snowboarders alike to tone the body’s core muscles. As the board moves in various directions, your body is constantly working to gain balance, helping to develop muscle strength, flexibility, core conditioning and stability. Stockists can be found at www.coolboard.co.uk and it costs from £98.

So whether you opt for the gym, the great outdoors or your own living room, there’s no excuse not to get your fitness plans backon track!

Have your say...Dear Trend

I’d just like to say thanks for making my Christmas Shopping a bit easier. My sister can be quite difficult to buy for, but she spotted an article about cookery classes at the Cowshed and said she’d always fancied learning to make her own chocolates. For Christmas, she got a bar of Galaxy and a gift voucher for a course. I’ve booked a place too, so we’ll have a great day out and learn to make delicious treats.

RegardsMary Patterson

Dear Trend

I was wondering if you could put some more What’s On listings on your website? The guide in the magazine is useful, but I’d like to be able to find out what’s going on in the next few days or weekend, so I can plan an interesting weekend. I’d like to see more music listings as well as films and arts events.

ThanksGavin McKenzieDyce

Over to you...Got something to tell us? Found a new shop or a greatrestaurant? Think there’s something we should be writing about? discovered somewhere great thanks to Trend?

Then why not let us know. Just drop us an e-mail or write...

Child lineAfternoon TeaThe weather outside was frightful , but inside, the Childline Fashion Show proved a scorching success. Stunning outfits from Frox and Papillon were modelled by equally stunning models from Premiere Productions, however children modelling clothes from Innocence definitely stole the show. The fantastic amount of £5633 raised will be used to support the Childline Base at Ruby Place Aberdeen.

Three little words have transformed the life of company director Jenny Wallace, a go-getting 29-year-old who has just embarked on a big adventure n Aberdeen.

The words are “it is on” and put together as itison spell out what she hopes will bring significant growth in free membership of itison.com, a website offering a huge variety of daily deals not only at hotels, restaurants and spas but also involving activities such as snowboarding or dance classes.

“Little did we know when we launched in Glasgow over a year ago just what an impact this would have not just in Glasgow but also in Edinburgh and Dundee,” said Jenny, a graduate in marketing and business of Strathclyde University who hails from Bearsden.

“Already we have more than 200,000 members, 80% of them female, and the numbers are growing at the rate of 1,000 a day,” she added. Helping her make an impact on the ground in Aberdeen is Julie Watson and her team promoting the venture. So how will itison.com be any different from other deal companies in a crowded market place? “Quality is our watchword,” said Jenny. “The whole point is that we deal with businesses that treat our members well and make them want to come back for more.” She began her career 10 years ago with a sister company DADA, founded by Edinburgh-trained lawyer Oli Norman, and this PR and events agency has hit the big time, for example looking after the media storm surrounding Susan Boyle. But back to Jenny. She attributes some of her get-up-and-go attitude to a year spent in high school near Wichita, Kansas. “You certainly learn about the importance of service in the States,” she said. And is there time for a boyfriend? “Yes, indeed,” said Jenny. “He’s a baker but, please, no jokes about him having plenty of dough.” Happy to oblige.

Deal me in, says Jenny
