site so check it out for the details. These parades are a good exposure

for us to inform people about what we do and why we are Shriners. Let’s use it for a membership tool. We all talk about wanting to bring in new Shriners and worry about a declining membership but we aren’t as active as we should be when it comes to recruiting. Everyone seems to have suggestions about what our Membership team should try. What we forget is that all of us are the membership team. When people see us having fun and enjoying ourselves for a good cause they should wonder what they are missing. Above all else we have to be enthusiastic about who we are and what we do. No one joins a mediocre organization; people join successful organizations to become a part of that success. All of us know at least one person who would make a great Shriner. If every one of us would sign that one person, WE WOULD DOUBLE OUR MEMBERSHIP IN ONE YEAR. Talk to that one person with some enthusiasm and tell them about our cause and about all the wonderful friends you have made since you became a Shriner that you would have not met any other way.

Mark your calendars, on July 13, 2016 at 7 PM there will be a stated meeting. Your Fez and current dues card will be required for admittance to the meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the reorganization of the Masonic Temple Association and other business as necessary. For several years the M.T.A. has been working toward qualifying for a tax exempt status which would allow them to apply for grants and possibly receive donations to assist with the revitalization of our wonderful building. This restructuring is needed to clear up the legal maze that they presently operate under which makes it almost impossible to obtain a tax exempt status.

Some other events that will be here before we know it:

Iowa Shrine Bowl in Cedar Falls, IA July 23

MSA in Marquette, Mich. August 4 through August 6

CSSA in Little Rock, Ar. August 25 Through August 27

Scimitar Potentates Ball in Little Rock, Ar. August 27

If you are planning to attend any of these events please contact the Abu Bekr office so we can finalize the accommodations. Housing is limited for all three events so please tell us if you plan to attend.

Chefs UnitWe are still here and have been busy. I

must of fell into a coma because I have not put in a news letter this year. I better get busy or I could get fired. So hear we go. We had our 2016 installation at the Japanese Steak House. We had a great time and great food.

2016 officers are Rick Belding Executive Chef, Kerry Steele Sous Chef, Yours Truly Secretary / Scribe, Colin Ross Treasurer and Eric Geenough Membership.

We are still doing Wednesday Burger Night. We would like to thank the Foot Patrol, White Horse, Shrine Ladies, Ladies Auxiliary and Magnolia Lodge for working some Wednesday nights. It helps us out and also is a great fundraiser for your Unit or Club.

If anyone is interested please contact Rick Belding at 712-898-9331. Catering jobs we have done this year: Woodbury County Sheriff Department, Ron Michener funeral lunch, Shrine media football dinner, unit seminar, Ladies Auxiliary lunch, US Federal Court, Hors d’oeuvre party, Linda Conolly funeral lunch. We have a few wedding reception dinners coming up also.

Chef/ Clown breakfast buffet was a success. Three hundred and ninety tickets where sold. Great job to all that helped.

We have made more improvements to the kitchen. Two new stoves with ovens are in. Its nice not to smell gas in the kitchen.

We have installed a double shelf and warmer on the stainless steel table we serve on that will keep the order nice and hot. All we ask is if you use the kitchen please clean up, put items back where you got them from and take out your trash.

Our upcoming fundraiser will be a Abu Bekr Chef Cook Book and will be going on sale for $20.00 each. Don’t miss out. We will let you know when they are ready. They make great Holiday gifts.

Until next TimeDwight Dirks, Scribe

Wrecking CrewHello from the Crew,May has been a busy month again for

the Crew. We have worked a few events at the Tyson to help fill our coffers, celebrated all the Mothers with our annual brunch, and traveled several places so let’s get started.

May 7th found Dejay and our beloved Director Matt traveling to Sioux Falls to take in the pageantry that is El Riad’s spring

Potentate’s Message

Parade season is upon us and I know the units are getting ready for a busy summer. Just as a reminder, our first Temple movement is in Allen Nebraska on June 11. The parade starts at 11 A M so line up as usual will be an hour or hour and a half prior to the start. Fellow Vintage Wheeler and Allen Nebraska’s pride, Dean Chase has promised us a beautiful day and lots of hospitality. Keep in mind; he has retired from his Sheriff duties so no “get out of jail free” cards.

The second temple movement is in Charter Oak, Iowa on June 18. This parade starts at 11 A M. Line up starts any time after 8 A M. they will have a designated Shriners staging area. If your unit is going to either or both parades please let me know or call the office so we can get information to the respective town for their announcing stands. Parade officials will be stamping wrists for access to the Oasis so please get stamped or you will not be admitted!!! The staging area and parade route map for Charter Oak is posted of the Abu Bekr web

Ceremonial. We arrived at the exact right time as lunch was just starting to be served, after we checked in with the Provost Guards, which was much more involved than one would think, as one of us had forgotten his dues card, not to mention names but his initials might be MP, and his father might be our Illustrious Potentate but as I said I’ll not mention names. However I do thank Dejay for vouching for me. We did help set up for the second section and got to participate in several stunts. We came back with some stronger friendships and some new ideas. Thank you to all the Directors Staff for the incredible hospitality.

May 8th was our annual Mother’s Day Brunch this event has been building for several years now and this year did not disappoint. We served over 200 people throughout the morning and we need to thank a few outstanding Crew members who went above and beyond the call of duty. First will be Dan E, Dan V and a future crew member in Dan V’s grandson who washed dishes pretty much from the time they arrived until the last dish was put away. Jeff Z and Jarrod got all the food and supplies ordered and at the temple and then Jeff ran for more food when we started to run out thanks to the tremendous, for us, crowd. Rusty Aka Russell the Love Muscle worked the grill like a 30 year veteran short order cook. Dave B worked his tush off making sure that everything went smooth as can be. For everyone else that came and helped you all were great and made it a great dining experience for all our guests. As a foot note we conducted a highly scientific exit poll as to where people heard about the event as there were a lot of new faces and almost all stated Facebook, so that goes to show the reach of social media.

May 14th found our Director Matt traveling to the Spencer ATV corps Pork Chop feed and the cold sands of 4 new nobles I do have to say that as a guy who likes pork chops they were excellent. Also making the trip from the Divan was CR Kelly, and 2nd CM Mike and Lady Karen along with Chief of Staff George Quint and Lady Dianna. George did an amazing job performing the cold sands as always. It was a fun evening bringing in 4 new riders for the ATV corps. Don’t worry Crew members it was mentioned that they should come to Sioux City this fall for the majesty that is the Fall Ceremonial.

The rest of the month is after this article but I will give my predictions. May 19th found the Crew in our first parade of the 2016 season Morningside Day’s parade. I predict that we arrived at least an hour early much to the pleasure of C.O.S George who was heard to say that the Crew has the most handsome men in all of Abu Bekr which is nice to hear George but did kind of freak out Benny when you gave him that special wink. It was so nice to get back out and show off our toys.

Then the next day May 20th was a fun filled day as a group of us headed for

Hospital Day’s at our own Twin Cities Shrine Hospital. Rita you had no reason to worry Sheldon was on his best behavior and that Jarrod won’t have to send the car out to be detailed. Mother Plummer did her best to herd all her little chickens. Thank goodness she doesn’t have any shock collars. I have said it before but I will repeat it if you have never been to your hospital you need to make the trip it drives home the reason we are Shriners.

May 28th is the last event I will speculate on for this month, the Crew will parade at Anthon for their Kids Day Parade as we have done for years. I predict that this may be the year that we let Benny ride the ram all by himself as he has turned 21 and is now a big boy. After the parade we will spring it on him that he needs to buy the first round as all have done after their first solo flight on the Ram. Ok this might be a new, short lived tradition, but tradition is tradition.

A couple of things to mention first are that we are selling Temple shirts they are a lovely Pacific Blue available in either button up or polo. Men’s sizes to 6xin both and talls in the button up to 4x. The price is $30 for the button up and $25 for the polo. Women’s styles go up to 3x in both at the same prices. These shirts are available from Jarrod K, Matt P or the office. We have a select few on hand but can order whatever you would like.

This is all the news I can pass along, or make up for this month so remember that all the fun we have is to help our Shrine kids that is our most important job as Shriners.

Until next month keep ringing the Bell for the Kids

Little Boy’s Meeting With God

There once was a little boy who wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with Twinkies and a six-pack of root beer and started his journey. When he had gone about three blocks, he met an old woman. She was sitting in the park just staring at some pigeons.

The boy sat down next to her and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the old lady looked hungry, so he offered her a Twinkie. She gratefully accepted it and smiled at him. Her smile was so pretty that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered her a root beer. Once again she smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word.

As it grew dark, the boy realized how tired he was, and he got up to leave but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the

old woman and gave her a hug. She gave him her biggest smile ever. When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, “What did you do today that made you so happy?” He replied, “I had lunch with God.” But, before his mother could respond, he added, “You know what? She’s got the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen!”

Meanwhile, the old woman, also radiant with joy, returned to her home. Her son was stunned by the look of peace on her face and he asked, “Mother, what did you do today that made you so happy?” She replied, “I ate Twinkies in the park with God.” But, before her son responded, she added, “You know, he’s much younger than I expected.”

Moral: God is everywhere. We just need to share our happiness and make others smile to feel him.

Remember you are the face of God to many. How do they see God when they look at YOU? Do they smile?

Celebrating 60 Years!!! 1956 - 2016Since our last article, the Clowns have

had a lot going on. First of all we hosted the ISCA Mid-Winter Convention back in February. This was a successful and fun event where we had a number of clowns from all over North America who came for fun, fellowship, competitions, and education. Next up, we had the annual Clowns/Chef ’s Unit Breakfast/Brunch Buffet, this again this year was a great success. Then, in April we had the 66th Annual Abu Bekr Shrine Circus. Again, the Clowns were charged with selling coloring books and the bicycle giveaway. From what I hear, the circus was quite successful this year. Also, we had a different way in which we sold the coloring books. Instead of everyone having coloring books, we had tables tragically located with the books and coloring books were available at the novelty stands. We would like to thank all of those who help with all of these events. With your help, they were all very successful and fun.

We would like to give a shout out to our Temple Recorder, Bill “Chopper” Pelchat for organizing an event for the Sneaker Fund. Chopper and some of his musician and fellow rock ‘n roll hall of fame friends did a music jam at the Work And Church Bar in Sioux City. There was not cover charge for the event, but the did ask for donations for the Sneaker Fund. This event

Foot PatrolHere is the month of June. Hopefully

we will get some sunshine and warmer weather. Well it is late in the evening once again with the news article due tomorrow. This reminds me of my school days as I was rushing around attempting to get my term papers in at the last minute. Some things just don’t seem to change especially what one always procrastinates all of his life.

Anyway let me review and begin from where I left off last month. As the Circus drew to a close on Sunday, April 17, five Auxiliary Ladies and I headed for Minneapolis to attend their 93rd annual Meeting of General Women’s Auxiliary. Things went quite uneventful except if one wants to count the stop at Emma Krumbee’s Restaurant on the way up. It only took me three tries to get back on to the highway to continue north. Otherwise, Trig, you would have even been proud of me. The ladies told me that my dream must have come true as I finally had my own harem. The meeting was very educational for me as I learned of all the things those lovely ladies were involved in. As a token of good behavior the ladies presented me with a bag of cashew nuts. That being one of my weak points usually I would have snapped them up within hours, but this time around it took me a whole four days. I must say, as a

whole, the trip was quite enjoyable for me, and the ladies, I think, enjoyed it also. Since on the return trip there was over an hour of complete silence except for a snore or two.

Now for the Captains Meeting Convention. We started out with the dinner at McCarthy & Bailey. The meals were very well done and tasty, while the refreshments weren’t that bad either.

The majority of us went touring that area of town afterwards and ended up at the Hard Rock. Though I have not heard from anyone yet that struck it rich that

2016 Abu Bekr DirectoryThe directory is now available on the Abu Bekr website: www.abubekr.com

The Shrine Office has a limited number of directories that are available.

raised over $800.00 for the Sneaker Fund. This event was a lot of fun to be a part of and was a huge success.

The Clowns once again participated in the annual Morningside Days Parade. Thanks to those who participated there. We are currently working on a number of events for this summer. Watch our page on Facebook and your email for more information. Also, the Boss Clown will be calling when we have events. Please try to participate as often as you can at our scheduled events, your active participation in the Clowns is what make our unit successful year after year. Thank you for your continued support. We are working on some social activities throughout the year to help with the fun and fellowship aspect of our unit as well. This could be in the form of picnics following out of town parades, yard parties/cookouts, balloon jams, etc. Please attend our regular stated meetings as often as possible your input on all of our activities is very valuable and is also what helps to make our unit what it is, a fun, educational, group that enjoys learning from each other in the wonderful art of Clowning.

If you or you know of someone who is interested in being a member of the Clowns, our unit meetings are the second Wednesday of every month (except for December) at 7pm at the Temple. We are always looking for new members to join this fun unit. Don’t worry if you have no experience in clowning, we have some very talented members who will be more than happy to train you in the wonderful art of clowning.

Until next month, keep Smiling!!Christopher “Clyde” Twiford,

White Horse Patrol

Greetings from the White Horse PatrolI apologize for no article last month,

but I was under the weather and just didn’t get it done.

Things have been picking up around the barns, we had a great pitchfork fondue and we would like to thank everyone who attended and made it a great success. A big thank you to all the volunteer’s who worked, without you we could not do this.

Also a big thank you to the Albert’s who cut up some concrete and dug down to the water line that had started leaking. Thanks Steve and Dan you guys do so much and we are really thankful to have you in our unit.

If you have been by the barns lately, you will see that the life sized fiberglass white horse that took a ride in the storm that caused us so much damage has been fixed, repainted and back up in it place. Thanks to Gary Schindal and Don Konopasek who repaired the legs and repainted it. Great job guys thank you very much.

Well, practice has started and so have the saddle sores. So we would all like just a hand shack and no slaps on the back side. I missed it but I was told that we already have our first entry into the best dismount award. Don’t worry Brenden, the season has just started, I’m sure there will be more entries.

Our first outing is June 4th in Sioux Center then June 11th to Granville, IA. The next weekend, June 18th, we will be in Le Mars for Ice Cream days in the morning and then traveling to Lakefield, MN for an afternoon parade. No not back home yet, we will end up that night 300 miles from home in Winona, MN where we will bed down and stable the horses for Sunday morning's parade there on June 19th. What a weekend that will be. We will then have a few days of rest and on June 25th we will be in Hospers, IA. Then a few weeks rest till the Rivercade parade and then a few days later we will be in Cedar Falls, IA for the Iowa Shrine Bowl Parade. WOW what a month and a half. So you may see some horse patrol guys walking a little funny. Parade season is always a lot of work but it is always a lot of fun. This group of guys are always ready to go where we need to, to spread the word about the Shrine Hospitals and what we do. I personally love going on these adventures with this group of men who can always put a smile on my face, thanks guys.

We would like to ask you to keep Denny Dorr in your prayers who had heart surgery a few weeks ago. After some setbacks is back home in Le Mars. Get better soon Denny.

Till next time and happy trailsRich Porter, Scribe

Cycle CorpsWell, it’s been a while since I have been

able to write an article for the Cycle Corps. I haven’t been able to attend the monthly meetings because I was busy helping with degree work at several of the area lodges. One of the new Masons that I was able to help get through his degrees was Thomas Young. Most of you should know Thomas. He was always helping out at the Shrine Circus every year taking toys back and forth to the different toy cages since he was a little duker. He finally reached the age of 18 and wanted to become a Mason and Shriner. It’s going to be great to see Thomas wearing the red fez of a Shriner from now on. Congratulations, Thomas on graduating from high school and being raised as a Master Mason. North Riverside Lodge #662 is proud to have you and your father Doug as members of our lodge.

I also have other meetings that at times conflict with our unit meeting, but it’s good to be back and I know that Phil is glad to see me back to take over my duties as secretary/scribe.

We are now in the midst of parade season and everything seems to be going smoothly. How could it not with the leadership of Phil Hane. Troy Baker has helped out this year by making sure that the batteries for the bikes are all charged up and ready to go. Thanks, Troy for all your help.

Payne Sargisson has been MIA for several months. Don’t know if he’s still picking corn from last year or planting corn for this year.

Our first parade of the season was the Morningside Days Parade and we had several members participate in it again this year after wiping off the dust from sitting in the storage unit all Winter. Everything went as well as can be expected for the first parade.

We have several parades that are coming up this month and they are as follows:

Saturday, June 4, 2016: Cherokee, IA (which was voted on NOT to attend)

Saturday, June 11, 2016: Charter Oak, IA (TEMPLE MOVEMENT)

Saturday, June 11, 2016: Decatur, NE (same day as the Temple Movement)

Saturday, June 18, 2016: Allen, NE (TEMPLE MOVEMENT)

Saturday, July 9, 2016: Schaller, IA - start time 10:00 AM

Kan DuettesWell, I would say that our Founder’s

Day Luncheon was a rousing success. Our Potentate Noel Plummer and wife, Jean; and their Granddaughter were in attendance along with Chief Rabban Kelly Conolly; Recorder Bill Pelchat; and Chaplain Neil Peck. And, our Potentate brought gifts. First and foremost, Directories for all. I know this is the age of technology but I surely do appreciate that little book. And, the new version has a spiral spine so that it

stays open to the page you are referencing. Hurray! And, there was a magnetic schedule of events so it will be right in front of you on the frig. That’s neat, too. And, Potentate Noel made sure everyone had received a pin for his year. Last, but not least, a ruler. Maybe now I will get those pants hemmed. We thank you Kind Sir for remembering us.

The figures were not yet available for the Circus but Potentate Plummer said that it was the best in the past three or four years. He thanked everyone for their help. And, he had nothing but praise for Abu Bekr Temple. I guess our financials are in good shape and that is a good thing. They are in the process of revamping the building, as you know. It goes slowly but it goes.

On September 24th, instead of being called the Potentate’s Ball, it will be called the Potentate’s Night of Entertainment. The entertainment will be a group similar to Tonic Sol Fa. And, there will be supper. Should be fun. Save the date.

There will be no Potentate’s Trip this year. Instead, this Potentate... Noel Plummer and Chief Rabban Kelly Conolly are going together on a trip to Ireland in June of 2017. Stops will include Dublin; Galway, and Kilarney. The price is approximately $ 4,000 per person for a ten day trip. If you have never been to Ireland, this is your chance. If you have it in your head to look for ancestors, be sure to do all your research prior to departure. It will make your chances of finding them a lot easier. The countryside is absolutely gorgeous. You have never seen a greener green. Should be a great trip!

The Potentate’s Lady Jean has, as her project, a Quilt Raffle. The quilts will be awarded at the Potentate’s Night of Entertainment on September 24th. The funds raised will be divided between the Auxiliary and Summer Camp. If you want to view the quilts, they are in the Shrine Office.

Unless I am way off base, our June Meeting is what we laughingly refer to as our “Picnic Meeting” and then we take our summer hiatus. Time flies when you are having fun. I am in favor of more fun for everyone.

Til we meet again,Your Scribe, Mary Ann

continued from previous pagenight. Next morning Captain Roger held the Captains meeting in the AM, while Bob Gwin and I took two of the Hospital Vans to transport the lovely ladies to Dakota City for a “High Tea” noon Luncheon. On the way back we made a side trip stop by taking the ladies to the Palmer’s Candy Outlet Store. The fellows had to rough it by having lunch being served to them at the Shrine Center. We finally found a niche for Uncle Don Lehmann to work at. He is a natural at collecting those funds. We just have to be careful so that he doesn’t wear those spots off while counting those twenties. We resumed the event later in the evening at the auditorium of the Shrine Center, with the theme of a beach party. There was only one slight problem, the whole day was cold and damp with drizzling rain and the heating system was already shut down for the summer. Captain Roger had built the most wonderful campfire out in the middle of the floor but it just wouldn’t warm up anything. There were no ladies out, running in their bikinis, they were wearing their parkas.

Before I forget it, how about that Circus Workers Dinner? What a meal! Again the weather was wet and cool but boy it sure warmed up the tummy. Many thanks go out to everyone that was involved in putting on this great feast.

The other day as a friend was filling out an application, it stated, “In case of

A new Shrine Hospital billboard sign has been erected on Spencer Area Shrine billboard in S.W. Spencer. After negations and billboard owner changes a new agreement was entered into for placement of “Shrine Hospital” logo on billboard of Spencer Area Shrine Club billboard located on Hwy 71 South.

Long time coming; but a nice addition to promote Shrine Hospitals.

This past year Spencer ATV Corps voted to replaced their 40 plus year old ATV machines, Sixteen (16) machines were traded on for twelve (12) new units.

A thank you to Noble Ron Mills who chaired this financial project and Nobles Jo LeClair and Bill Bangs who headed to the supplier for exchange and pick up.

Upon return, new units were prepared for parade use as well as semi trailer for hauling was revamped. Today 12 new ATV units are ready for 2016 debut. In photo are new ATV machines along with Spencer ATV members; and new Shrine Hospital billboard sign.

Animal UnitOn May 10 the Animal Unit gathered

at John and Nancy Nielsen’s house. Everyone brought food to go along with perfect steaks grilled by John. After gathering and enjoying the meal together on Nielsen’s deck the Nobles discussed past and future events. Onions sells are over and went very well. Upcoming events: June 11th Temple Movement, June 18th Charter Oak Parade, and planning for the Animal Unit yearly golfing July 16th at M & M golf course. Next meeting June 14th Bowling Alley Manilla. Best wishes to Ron and Lois who were unable to join us.

Vintage WheelsVintage Wheelers met at Dooskey’s -

Kingsley Golf Course on April 21st with 40 members and ladies attending. This meeting was planned and hosted by our honorary members... “ladies, you can set up these meetings anytime.” Jack Slaymaker was our program presenter. Jack told of his experience of building and racing a hotrod at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. He set a record of 131.357mph...the average of two runs. Great presentation, photos and memorabilia.

Potentate Noel brought great news of a very successful 2016 shrine circus. Attendance and revenue were up.

Of course, we provided convertibles for the Morningside Days Parade on May 19 and a few more vintage wheels cars to promote the fraternity and our hospitals.

Next unit event was the annual Dust-Off tour which took us to Sioux Center as our first stop. Of course, you can’t make a run to Sioux Center on a Saturday morning (05-21-16) without a stop at Casey’s Bakery

in the mall. After a little body refueling, we visited the local veterans memorial.

From Sioux Center, we were off to Rock Valley for a tour of that communities museum which is located in the old Pember Drug Store. Our ‘thanks’ to Greg Westra for arranging our tour of the museum and his antique store. After lunch in Rock Valley, we were off to Hawarden for the Calliope Village which has 14 restored buildings. With the sun more in the West than the East, we ended our excursion with members selecting their own routes back home via sights they wanted to visit while out with their classic car. Next month we will report on any ‘minor peccadillo’ (also known as mechanical problems) and any severe exhaustion issues (ran out of gas...either the car or the driver).

Other upcoming commitments include the annual Cherokee Parade on June 4, Allen Temple Movement on June 11, Charter Oak Temple Movement on June 18 and the 40th annual Grand Meadow Days Celebration on September 10 & 11. There will be many other parades this summer so Vintage Wheelers keep checking your e-mail, snail mail, voice mail and text messages.

Also, watch for smoke signals in the event of power outages.

Did you know? The Vintage Wheels Unit was founded

in 1984....We currently have 50 members and 7

honorary members...In 1962 Abu Bekr had 3,900 members...The first Abu Bekr Ceremonial was

held October 17, 1907...The committee appointed to select

a name for the new Shrine Temple was chaired by George D. Perkins, publisher

of the Sioux City Journal. Abu Bekr was the favorite son-in-law of the prophet Mohammed.

A scary day at the Shrine Circus

By Arvid HuismanMarch and April are traditionally the

months Iowans are treated to a Shrine Circus performance. Whenever I hear or read something about a Shrine Circus my memory takes me back to the spring of 1957 and my first visit to a Shrine Circus.

I was a third grader in Jewell when our teacher announced that we would be going to the circus in Des Moines in the new Veterans Memorial Auditorium… free of charge.

Details of the bus ride to Des Moines have faded from my memory. When we rolled up to Vets, however, an indelible memory was made. There before us was the largest building I had ever seen. It was larger than our school gymnasium; even larger than the John Deere store in town.

Other than the usual circus fare of trapeze artists, elephants and clowns,

very few of the circus acts remain in my recollections. There was one incident, however, that will remain forever in my memory.

Late in the program I saw a large gorilla on the other side of the auditorium. The public address announcer excitedly drew our attention to the beast which was skillfully walking on a narrow rail atop a divider separating the seats from the floor of the auditorium.

The announcer dramatically told us that the gorilla – whose name I have also forgotten – had escaped from his cage.

continued from previous page I was relieved but will never forget the gorilla on the loose or the immensity of Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

Living in Sioux City and later in the Des Moines metro I always enjoyed seeing children from small towns on their way to the circus, noses pressed to the school bus windows to marvel at the sites in the city. In my mind’s eye I could see the chubby face of a nine-year-old kid from Jewell, nose pressed to the window, marveling at the immensity of Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

In Sioux City I became acquainted with the Abu Bekr Shrine and some of its members. Later, I became acquainted with the Za Ga Zig Shrine in Des Moines and some of its members. There is also the El Kahir Shrine in Cedar Rapids, the Kaaba Shrine in Davenport, El Mecca Shrine in Waterloo and a number of Shrine Clubs in smaller cities.

The Shrine is a part of Freemasonry and was organized in the United States in 1870. Shriners International describes itself as “a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth.”

The organization’s charitable arm is the Shriners Hospitals for Children – 22 hospitals in the United States, Canada and Mexico that provide orthopedic care, burn treatment, cleft lip and palate care

Nothing in my nine years had frightened me as much as this ape on the loose. At this moment he was all the way across the auditorium from where we were sitting but… what if he came to our side? What would we do? Where would we go? Are gorillas mean to kids? Would he hit us? Would he eat us? How do I get out of here? Why aren’t the adults getting us out of here? Why doesn’t someone capture King Kong?

The gorilla roared, beat his chest, danced on the rail and continued moving in our direction. I was petrified.

I was close to screaming and incontinence when the beast took off his “gorilla head” to reveal that he was really a man in a gorilla suit.

and spinal cord injury rehabilitation. Any child under the age of 18 can be admitted to a Shriners Hospital with their doctor’s approval without regard for religion, race or relationship to a Shriner. Shriners Hospitals bill the patients’ insurance companies but offer free care to those that don’t have insurance.

The first Shrine Circus took place February 1906 in Detroit where their Shrine Circus remains the largest in the country.

Though I have never been a member of a Masonic organization, I admire the Shriners for the wonderful things they do for children and for magnificently scaring the daylights out of this child nearly 60 years ago.

Hospital DadsFor the last several issues, I have been

on “through the eyes of a child”.It is hard to get into their minds

sometimes because their world is pretty much “Now!”

Developing their vocabulary has to be a difficult process in forming their thoughts into words. In an adult opinion, we spend their first five or so years getting them to talk, and the next 15 years getting them to shut up. The following illustrates the importance of keeping it simple.

“Walk a little plainer, Daddy”,Said a little boy so frail. For I’m following in your footsteps,And I don’t want to fail.Sometimes your steps are very plain,Sometimes they’re hard to see.So walk a little plainer, Daddy,For you are leading me.I know that you once walked this wayMany, many years ago,And what you did along the wayI’d really like to know. For sometimes when I’m tempted,I don’t know what to do.So walk a little plainer, Daddy,You know I’m following you.Someday when I’m grown up,You are what I want to be;Then I will have a little boyWho’ll want to follow me.And I would want to lead him rightAnd help him to be true,

Imagine you are the parent of a child born with a limb deficiency or an orthopaedic or neuromuscular condition. Where would you turn for help? If you’re like most parents in the upper Midwest, you would turn to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Twin Cities, because you know you will receive top-notch care. You also know that your child will be treated by dedicated, compassionate health care professionals in a warm, family-centered environment.

Gifts have helped make Shriners Hospitals for Children — Twin Cities a leader in pediatric orthopaedic care. This support helps our committed team of caregivers improve the lives of thousands of children, whether they are facing an urgent need, a long-term condition or seeking to improve their quality of life.

The Power of Giving Back Together, we have helped many

kids. One patient, Katie, was born with a leg deficiency that required amputation when she was 11 months old. Almost immediately, she learned to walk using a prosthetic leg and has been unstoppable ever since.

Katie wanted to do more than just say “thank you” to give back to the Twin Cities Shriners Hospital and help others who share her experiences. For a high school project, Katie collected used prosthetics and orthotics to donate to a charity not affiliated with Shriners Hospitals for Children. She also collected $3,400 to directly support the Twin Cities Shriners Hospital’s prosthetics and orthotics department.

We love receiving gifts from old friends who have experienced our commitment to care. And we love getting to know new friends who are

So walk a little plainer, Daddy,I’m going to follow you.I had a Dad who led me right, but it

wasn’t until after I became an adult, that I realized that he did walk plainer for me and my siblings, and so by quiet example. In my eyes, he was one of the finest people you could ever know. Thanks Dad, I Love You!

There are many examples in today’s life supporting various thoughts. One, History repeats itself and what comes around goes around. This goes beyond Masonry and Shrine. The following quote may have been made recently or long ago. You choose.

“I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.” Source: Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) Surprised? Another one? O.k.

“To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Ralph Waldo Emerson – American Poet (1803-1882)

You can make your own decisions if

the Hospital Dads, Masonry, and Shrine, and really, everybody in general, can use quotes such as these in our daily lives. Maybe the World would be a better place if we used the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule for our guidelines each day.

For those of you who acknowledge my efforts, I humbly thank you.

Rat PatrolThe Abu Bekr Rat patrol has once

again made the circus a success thanks to all our hard work getting all the toy stands to the Tyson, setting up, tearing down and working all the shows with our fabulous turnout. Our ladies jumped in and helped as usual and everyone had a great time working as a team. Capt. Johnny wanted to thank all the ladies and Rats that took time off work and helped out to once again make our unit stand out as doers!

With practice underway we are sanding off the rust, airing up the tires, and getting ready for another great parade

So we are starting a relief fund called Sunshine Fund of Abu Bekr Shrine to assist our Nobles in a time of need. Please help us help our brothers by sending in a donation for the fund along with your 2015 dues.

season. We have plenty of riders ready to jump in and have a lot of great fun this year and as usual our great ladies will be there by our side.

Rob has at least one Odyssey rebuilt and ready to go if anyone is interested and would like one all ready to run. If you are looking at any Odysseys to buy please don’t hesitate to talk to a current rider for a second opinion on the Odyssey your checking out. It costs enough to re build them without getting a bad one and making it worse. There are many members who actually know what they are looking at and can assist you with your purchase. If you know anyone that has a machine they would like to part with let a member of the unit know and we can get it to a good new home.

Some of the fun things we are planning to do as a unit this year is raffle off Capt. Johnny’s Fez and getting him dance lessons. We are considering selling Mike Rundall’s Odyssey and not tell him to see if he notices. After lots of thought and planning Dave Benson has donated “The Dave Benson Odyssey Repair Center” to Joe Petersen since he is now out of work and in need of a place to hang out. Casey has made a deal to paint the semi fenders Yellow and to add a roll bar to the semi. Eric G. has been voted the most eligible

bachelor in the Rats for 2016 and we will be in search of a rich wife for him.

Capt. Johnny would like to wish all our units good luck and we all hope to have a safe fun summer parade season with lots of good fun and memorable times. Don’t forget to greet a brother in friendship and to pray for our less fortunate brothers and their families. Have a great memorial day and remember our military for all they do, past, present, and future. Congratulations to one of our newest Master Masons, Thomas Young, we all welcome you and the spirit and fun you bring to our organization.

Race Car Design Contest Launches

Shriners Hospitals for Children is teaming up with BK Racing and NASCAR driver David Ragan to provide current patients with the opportunity to create the paint scheme that will adorn the No. 23 Toyota Camry in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coke Zero 400 in Daytona, Florida, on Saturday, July 2. This partnership with BK Racing and Ragan continues Shriners Hospitals for Children’s mission to send Love to the rescue to children with orthopaedic conditions, spinal cord injuries, burns and cleft lip and palate.

For more than 90 years, Shriners Hospitals for Children has provided life-changing care to more than one million children. Shriners Hospitals for Children provides all aspects of treatment, including surgery, rehabilitation and psychological support, regardless of the families’ ability to pay.

Ragan, a member of Shriners International and Love to the rescue ambassador for Shriners Hospitals, was on site last week at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Houston to introduce the Healing Power of Love contest.
