Transportation Fund DonationErrin got to present her donations that

she collected for her 30th birthday to the Abu Bekr Shriners! This money will go to the transportation fund that transports patients and their families back and forth to the hospital for appointments when the families need help! Errin was a patient at the Minneapolis hospital for almost 17 years, and although we did not have to use the transportation services, we are grateful that the service is provided for others! Thank you to all the Shriners who are out there working hard to help all the beautiful children!

Pop Tab DonationSage Gaer, 10, of Pender donated 51#

of pop can tabs to the Shriner’s Hospital. Chaplain “Chopper” accepted the donation during the Abu-Bekr Flyers Sweet Corn Feed. Sage has been collecting these tabs for about 2 years along with asking his friends and family to help. Sage was a very proud to be able to donate his collection to such a good cause. Way to go Sage!

Hospital DadsGreetings, as I’ve heard that there is a

wonder why the newsletter did not have an entry for Hospital Dads. There is a reason and I hope it is acceptable. For several months I was totally 24/7 with fatigue where I slept day and night. As if it was desirable, I had a great weight loss, about forty five pounds. My doctor referred me to a clinic, where after a number of tests it was determined I have rather serious problems.

I would like to say that it has been sort of fun and yet a challenge to find something of interest to write about, humor, kids, people, and Shrine. Then to top it off, three Nobles whom I will name, and all the others who honored me in many ways. The three Nobles are Roger Merrill, Dick Storm and Horst Zittlau. I know there

Potentate’s MessageAugust was a very busy month for Abu Bekr.Midwest Shrine Assoc. was held in Aberdeen. Congrats

to the Rat Patrol for the Trophies and Chanters for bringing home the Gold. Way to go Guys!! Farrell has got to quit Lip syncing . Just Kidding.. Thanks to Bernie and Chopper for Great Hospitality Rooms. Dwight Got lucky at one of the bars downtown and bought the whole group a drink. We all rubbed him for good luck. Two parades, Competitions and a ladies luncheon in the books.

Ceremonial was held on Aug.10th in the morning. The ladies went to Poppin’ Bottles for some painting while the nobles had ceremonial. Thanks to all who helped make it a good one. And thank you to our proudest Neil Peck for MC’ing..The Honoree this year was my dad Gene Saunders. It was a proud moment for both of us. After Ceremonial we all headed to Lawton for a Temple Parade. Overcast and a light wind helped

with the humidity. After we headed for the Lawton Exchange for some air conditioning, food, fun and Fellowship. Thank you to Cody Meyers and everyone who helped make it a great success and all the units who attended.

The next day on Sunday we headed to a new location for the shrine picnic. It was again awesome food, Music by Superior Sound & Lighting, Bounce House, S.C. Fire Dept., and Blue Bunny Ice cream donated by Fred Wells. Thanks to Chopper, Bernie, Jeff Zook, and R.C and everyone who helped out. We had a special guest, her name was Errin who was a shrine child for 17 years, came and presented the Divan with a check for the Transportation fund as part of her 30th Birthday Party Gift.

Also, A big Huge thank you to the Midwest Central Shrine Animal Unit for the $4,000 donation to the Transportation Fund. This money is greatly appreciated in helping children/parents get to their appointments and hospital when they need it most.

As I am writing this it is CSSA Week in Sioux City. Hope all you can come and support Abu Bekr in all the events. A big shout out to Ill. Sir David Krogh for all the countless hours of putting all this together. Photos to come next month. I know it will be a great success.

Please Note all Units/Nobles:At the August Divan meeting, a motion was passed that any unit wanting to have any

type of Raffle will need to bring to the Potentate and Divan for Board Approval.Todd Saunders

are others who contributed and I am also grateful to them. For them to railroad their story to Imperial was awesome. For me to be the recipient of such an honor which embodied Abu Bekr and Sioux City, Iowa. For those who called me about the letters was humbling to say the least and a sincere expression of gratitude for their efforts. For me, a profound ‘Thank You’ for all the friendships which otherwise would never have become a reality.

May God bless you all.Sincerely and fraternally, -

Trygve ‘Trig’ Olund, Scribe or Scribe retired

--------------Upon receiving a telephone call from

Trig a few days back, as I was on the run to rehab, he explained to me why he had to resign his Hospital Dad’s Scribe Post. I must admit that things didn’t sink in on what he told me until an hour later and must admit that I got misty eyed. I realized that as we all get older and which happens sooner than later we have to step back and allow someone else to take the reins. At the same token when the person has dedicated so much of one’s life time it is extremely hard to see them to have to let go of their work of love.

Before anything else, Trig, I requested from Barb that she would allow me to type up your newsletter. Upon having to swear on the bible that I would not change one letter or syllable, she said yes.

I first saw Trig as we both were inducted

The Cycle Corp continued to parade this year by attending the Potentate’s Temple Movement in Lawton, IA. on Saturday, August 10th. We had four members, President Phil Hane, Jr., Jerry Levay, Colin Ross, and Sheldon Menin, who participated. Phil led us around the parade route doing circles, serpentines and stopping to wave at the crowds along the route. Afterward, everyone met at the Lawton Exchange for something to eat and nice cool beverages. It was a great day for a parade, fun, and fellowship. The unit would like to “thank” Phil Hane Jr. and Jerry Levay for loading, cleaning, hauling, and unloading the motorcycles that day. It is a thankless job, but with members like that, the work always gets done. “Thank you” Phil and Jerry for all of your hard

work in making this event happen for the Cycle Corps.

The Cycle Corps will probably once again help with the Boys and Girls Club fundraiser, which should be scheduled sometime this month. You will receive a phone call from Phil to help out. We always donate our time, by dealing cards, for this very worthy cause.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 4th at 7:30 PM at the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple. We hope that all members can attend this meeting, so we can find out what future events we have to work.

Until next month, remember, keep the rubber down and the chrome up.

into the Shrine the same year during the mid-nineties. He joined the Hospital Dads Unit instantly while I took a little longer until I fully retired. My first trip’s mentor of course was Trig. And he had the knack of making one feel at ease instantly. We conversed on anything and everything. What got my attention right away was that he could outtalk any Shrine Lady in Sioux City. But as time went by I realized on how much care he put into his duty of transporting the patient and guardian. As we got to the hospital Trig would greet everyone, while everyone knew him.

His dedication was above and beyond, as anytime a driver was hard to find, Trig would be there, as he made close to three hundred trips. He is one of those most unforgettable people you meet that grabs hold onto your heart and won’t let go.

At the same token he acts the most humble part as when one attempts to give the earned recognition, by saying “isn’t this what a Shriner does.”

Trig, we wish you the best. Get well soon. The Shrine will miss your column, I know I will. The Hospital Dads Quote will be “Dad, - Can I be just like You?”

Dr. Tom Gruis, Scribe.July-August has been terrible for me.

On Saturday; July 27th at 10:27 in the morning my 58-year-old son Tim was killed in a traffic accident. He was on his motorcycle in full protective gear and it worked just as it should. A young man did not respect a stop sign and pulled out in front of Tim who had the right of way for several blocks ahead of him. The accident happened just a couple of blocks from his home. The driver of the pick-up truck did a hit and run and he was caught and charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death; maybe also failure to yield the right of way.

One of Tim’s younger brothers, Zeph, happened on the accident and saw it happen. His first-hand account bore little resemblance to the media’s reporting.

The Evangelical Free Church where Tim has attended since about 1972 was full for the funeral. All of my seven other children and spouses were there. So were grandkids and great-grandkids and many more family members.

Tim married Faith Stoltz of Sioux City in 1981.

My wife and I were just talking about such an event a few days before and couldn’t imagine how terrible that would be. We still don’t know. Grief comes in waves.

The out pouring of sympathy was amazing. So many loved ones, family

and friends…. If Simpson College was awarding minors when I went there mine would have been sociology. Here is an approximation of those that came to see us from my organizations and does not include family friends. About nine Masons, two Gideons, a couple of men I worked with from KCCI-T8 years ago, a fellow teacher, a couple of radio amateurs who are dear friends, former students, Sweet Adelines, cards from Kiwanians, and quite a few from Algona friends. Both pastors from our church came to the visitation.

Masonry does not have an exclusive hold on brotherly love, relief, and truth. The hugs and handshakes, and cards, and phone calls, and E-mails are precious beyond words. And how blessed we are to share in our fraternity such a great example of kindness – and for sure, brotherly love, relief and truth! Next to Christianity fraternalism is a great hope for mankind.

The point of all this is how important the humanity of people! The realization that there are more bonds than differences needs to be so much more recognized and cherished. The warmth of the heartfelt feelings and their sharing. This is a two-way experience. I believe that the reason for creation is love! We have so much more in common than we have differences. I recently read where someone said how much they hated 9/11 but how much they loved 9/12.

I need to work on my caring constantly. It is so easy to forget how much kind words and cards, et all, mean until one receives

them in a time of crisis and need. The usual signature always has “travel

safe” in it. At this time that has more meaning than ever. It was never meant to apply to just physical travel but also to our beliefs and choices in our lives. And I believe that our lives do not end at death!

Thank you for indulging me this month. I have so much appreciation.

“The Lord is my refuge and my strength. And underneath are the everlasting arms.” Deuteronomy 33:27a.

Travel safe, thank you, and God Bless.Tom “Doc” Gruis, K.Y.G.C.H.,

Scribe.

Cycle EscortsThe Cycle Escorts held their annual

Poker Run on Saturday, July 27, 2019. There were approximately 25 registered riders plus several riders who just wanted to ride along and enjoy the day with our motorcyclists from around the area. Everyone met at Jeff ’s Bar 2 in Moville, IA. where the event began. After registering, the riders left Jeff ’s Bar 2 around 1:00 P.M. for four more area bars to have their map stamped, have a bite to eat and enjoy a cool beverage while traveling around the Siouxland area. The weather was great the entire day with decently warm weather and sunny skies. Everyone arrived back at Jeff ’s Bar 2 around 5:30 PM for their chance at having the best poker hand and enjoying a pulled pork sandwich and chips. If you wanted a nice cool adult beverage, the staff at Jeff ’s Bar 2 was more than willing to accommodate.

The winner of the best poker hand was Patty Petersen, who won half of the registration fees collected or around $230.00. Congratulations to Patty! Patty was kind enough to donate $110.00 back to the unit. Thank you so much patty for being generous in your donation. The Cycle Escorts appreciated it very much.

The Cycle Escorts would like to thank Sheldon Menin and Rita Newman for handling the registration table, Marty and Jennifer Kenniston for dealing the cards

Oriental BandI can’t believe the parading season is

already on its way down the road. We had another very successful parading season and it was amazing to see all the people in the streets getting into the music. The reactions are fun to see; whether it be people shouting “HEY!” along with the big bass drum, the curious smiles as they hear a musette for the first time, or the kids covering their ears (can’t blame them for

lack of taste). I am also proud to see the growth which has happened over the year, not only within our numbers in the band, but also the skills each member is now bringing to the table. For guys who often come in sharing statements like, “I have no musical talent,” or, “I’ve never picked up an instrument before,” they sure are making some pretty good noise!

As the parade season wraps up, we will be looking toward our degree team practices again. Although it is important to stay in practice with our instruments, it is also a great plan to start finding new in-roads with our local Blue Lodges. We hope that through this degree team we will be able to offer something back to the Masonic roots that we all share.

So, whether it be working on ritual with our degree team or finding an instrument to use while have a good time:

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!?! Get involved with us in the Oriental Band and have an amazing time while making some noise!

Andrew Gerodias

ChantersThe Chanters sang our performance at

the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on July 28. The concert was well received as it was last year. We competed in Aberdeen at MSA. We received a gold award for our

efforts. Thanks to all the Divan members who were there to support our efforts. We always appreciate it when other Shriners come to hear us. The combined chanter units also presented a very successful concert that afternoon at the Plymouth Congregational Church. We also will have ridden and sung in the CSSA parade on Thursday night, August 22.

Now we will be working on our fall plans and arranging future performances.

Watermelon Days as the Legion members that put it on, were wanting to retire after many years of doing it. Since the Flyers have a few Master Anglers and Master Chefs, we finally accepted the challenge. Since I am neither of those, I am in charge of plates and napkins. On Friday, September 6th at the Thurston Legion Hall we will be frying up some fresh fish and invite you to come support us. On Sunday, September 8th, Magnolia Lodge # 220 will again be hosting the Ham Dinner before the parade so please make plans to come and eat prior to watching the shortest and most fun parade in all of Thurston County.

During our Sweet Corn Feed we had a special guest, Sage Gaer of Pender, came and donated 51# of pop can tabs to the Shriner’s Hospital. See photo elsewhere in this issue.

Abu Bekr FlyersOur second season with the drift trikes

is starting to wind down. They continue to be fun to ride and also are a crowd pleaser. You will not see us competing at C.S.S.A., but should see us in the parades. We felt that we wouldn’t have enough time for practice in order to be competitive. We have ordered 2 more machines, as we have a couple new members wanting to ride with us.

Our first fundraiser on August 4th was a big success as we received lots of compliments on the food and the sweet corn was perfectly ripened. Thanks to all who came out to support us and to the members for all their hard work. Thank you to the ladies for making the salads and deserts along with Darrel and Al for the sweet corn and to Dave and Roger for the use of the shop.

For the last few years, we have been asked to take over the Fish Fry at Thurston

Women’s Auxiliary

I would like to thank everyone that is saving the pop tabs. Last week some of our ladies pack up 123 pounds of tabs to go up to the hospital. The ladies take a magnet and sort through all the tabs to make sure they are all good. Then then put them in boxes with a plastic liner and weigh each box. The boxes of tabs weight about 15 pounds each. This size makes them easier to handle.

Keep up the good work. We didn't meet in August, but we will

be meeting on September 16 in case anyone would like to join the ladies and see some of what the Auxiliary is all about.

We are still busy making dolls, dogs, ponies and many other items. Come and look in the showcase for some of the ladies' work, they do a wonderful job.

We need to get some sets of dish towels embroidered. We have had some interest in them lately. We have a lot of nice items on display in you need a gift for someone

special. We have some new ideas to get started

on this fall. The hospital is still need of reading

books for kids 9-18 years old. Thanks again for the donations of tabs

and other items to be sent to the kids.We just received a nice "thank you"

card from the ladies at the hospital for all the wonderful support the Abu Bekr Women's Auxiliary send to them. We couldn't do it without everyone's help.

Foot PatrolGreetings to all from the Foot Patrol, as

the busy month of September has arrived. This month brought us all the reports we need to work on for the last month of August’s MSA & CSSA’s happenings. But now, to think about it, as the paper needs to be printed by the 18th we will have to wait until next month. Isn’t this exciting! Anyway Captain Roger has been patiently working with us on the routines, over and

over again! At least the majority of marchers have finally gotten down which foot is the lefty. As I am an observer only for this year I can honestly vouch that sometimes we are very good and sometimes we are not so good. Therefore let us be excellent when we will have competed. Since all the activities are in Sioux City, let us hope we had many observers see us win the trophy.

As I was told, since I had to miss the last Temple Movement at Lawton that things went very well as the inductees enjoyed themselves tremendously. But since the FP didn’t have enough marchers Dwight brought the FP golf cart and guess what? Several of the Divan crew rode on

astute answer; “When you marry the right woman, you are COMPLETE”. “When you marry the wrong woman, you are FINISHED”. “And when the right one catches you with the wrong one …. You are COMPLETELY FINISHED”!

He won first place, - a case of Falstaff Beer.

The get well list is as follows. Charles and Barb Oehlerking, both are down, as he fell and fractured his leg while Barb is recouping from a stroke.

Then there is Trig Olund suffering from several ailments and has a very hard time getting around. Finally there is the WHMP’s Rich Porter, ailing with more back surgery. As a matter of fact the FP feels so bad that we are declaring September as “Do not pick on Rich Porter Month!”

As always we wish everyone a speedy recovery and get well soon.

Past Captain Gene Merchant’s wife, Norma, passed away. The Foot Patrol sends its sincere condolences to their family. Her upbeat attitude and many smiles will be missed.

And now for the Happy Birthday list: Sept. 1st – Gary Herbst; Sept. 6th – Shirley Sorge; Sept. 9th – Paul Kelly & Barb Price; Sept. 10th – Eldon Sweet; Sept. 18th – Laverne Schossow; Sept. 27th – Judy Hinds; Sept 28th – Carolyn Jones. So, Happy Birthday to all and many more!

As I am attempting to finish writing this newsletter the wife is reviewing face book on the I pad and all I can see is a variety of FP faces along with several of other Shriners that are attending the X’s baseball game along with the great tailgate

it. And one of them had the name of Rich Porter, the guy that gave me all the guff when I drove it!

As our Illustrious Potentate, Todd Saunders, is constantly on the run going to all those Imperial events, I’ve been clued in on one of those get acquainted events he partook in.

It was a linguistic competition. And believe it or not he was holding his own quite well. The last question was, “How do you explain the difference between COMPLETE and FINISHED in a way that is easier to understand”?

Most spoke up and said that there is no difference.

Potentate Todd then presented his

continued from previous page party that looks like which was also well attended. As usual they are having a grand old time.

And now here is Kenny’s Korner: - A few years ago Chaplain, Mark Schopke, was talking to a Judge wanting a divorce, as he tells the judge, “I just can’t take it anymore. Every night she’s out until way after midnight, just going from bar to bar!” – The Judge asks, “What’s she doing?” – He answers, “Looking for me.”

And then there was Colin Ross as he told this one. “I went to the house that I grew up in and asked if I could go in and look around. They said ‘No’ and slammed the door!

– Parents can be so rude …”With that, - until next month,
