    Huntington preparing students for 25 years

    The Huntington Learning Center in Knox-ville has been helping students in school and preparing for college entrance exams for 25 years. They are conveniently located at 117 North Peters road. Owners, Matthew and Krista McGrath operate the Learning Center with a team of dedicated teachers and staff . They all share a passion for helping students achieve results and gain confi dence.

    The McGrath’s have six children of their own, so they know managing family logistics can be a challenge. They pride themselves on customer service. The whole team of teachers work hard to motivate and educate students. They provide scheduling fl exibility, and regu-lar detailed student center progress meeting with parents.

    Tate lnsurance Group was founded with the sole pur-pose of providing Knoxville residents with an in-surance agency that’s completely locally owned and operated.

    “Unlike the national brands, we are a family-owned company that is 100 percent local,” explained President Scott Tate, who started the agency in 2008.

    Since its founding, Tate Insur-ance Group has brought on two local partners -- Stuart Bilbrey and Amy Moore. The agency’s branch offi ces are also run by Knoxville residents.

    “We hire local,” Tate said. In fact, Tate’s son, Jacob, a college

    baseball player studying fi nance and insurance at Ohio University, spent time in the agency this past summer and plans to eventually work for the family business.

    “We have various family members of employees that help with our data processing and projects,” added Tate, noting that the agency does what it can to give back to the community, as well.

    For example, Tate said that for every referral received, the insurance com-pany will donate to the Emerald Youth Foundation. The company also aims to support local sports teams and schools through donations and sponsor-ships.

    “Why do we give back? Because the families in this community have been so good to me and my family,” he said.

    Given the current economic climate, Tate emphasized the necessity of sup-porting local businesses and organizations.

    “I think now, more than ever, it is important to do business locally and with family-owned businesses,” he said. “It has been a hard year for everyone and doing business locally only helps protect the economy in the area you live:’

    PureMagic Carwash, an idea sprung from a Farragut couple’s home in West Knoxville, brought state-of-the-art conveyor belts for interior and exterior cleaning, the first Polish Tunnel to the U.S., and some unique camera sensing technology to our east Tennessee communities.

    “We love the idea of building new kinds of car washes,” said PureMagic co-founders Jim and Teri Rooney - winners of Knoxville’s Chamber of Commerce prestigious Pinnacle Award for Innovation.

    After founding a national auto show & motors sports management company from their Farragut home in ‘97, the couple marched forward into professional car washing. “Our thought back then was simple: if we can detail cars nationally at a high level, why can’t we wash cars local-ly at the same level,” Rooney said. “We accomplished that goal and are honored to win Knoxville’s Favorite Car Wash in 2020 – eight consecutive years.”

    With the opening of the company’s seventh location at 1708 W. Broad-way Ave. in Maryville, the locally owned and operated company contin-ues to push boundaries in customer experience and car wash technolo-gy. “Our Core Focus today is simple: provide the cleanest, friendliest, and most trusted carwash experience in town,” said Jim Rooney, the company’s CEO.

    The Rooney’s recently intro-duced split-belt conveyors and new camera sensing technology to improve wash speed, safety, and quality at their Walker Springs and Maryville facilities. “What’s great is we have camera technology that boxes vehicles as they move through our wash tunnels – should any vehicle move out of place for some reason, our cameras recognize the movement and automatically shut down the tunnel to protect the customer and our equipment,” Rooney said.

    TuningTuning a a DreamDream

    Thomas Herrick’s dream of owning a full-service automotive shop came to fruition with the opening of Thomas Tuning and Service in February.

    “TTS is his vision,” said Thomas’s wife, Ginny, who helps run the business on Checkerboard Lane.

    With two decades of experience and a wealth of automotive knowledge, Thomas fi rst trained to be an Audi mechanic in Atlanta. In 2001, he joined the technical staff at Harper Audi and eventually grew into a position that allowed for more customer interaction.

    “He realized that was his favorite part of the car business,” Ginny said. “He truly found fulfi llment in working with customers, helping them understand and take care of their vehicles.”

    This love for helping people eventually led Thomas to start his own busi-ness in 2013. He began helping others with aftermarket upgrades the dealer-ship did not provide.

    “It was defi nitely a hobby at the start, but he had dreams of making it more,” explained Ginny. “He wanted to serve the community on his own terms and teach our children by building a family business based on integrity, account-ability and value.”

    “With our own shop, we can provide dealership-level expertise and service at a more aff ordable price point, and we can take the time to make sure cus-tomers understand our recommendations,” Thomas added.

    Thomas serves as the shop’s technician, service manager, customer rela-tions specialist and general problem solver. Ginny takes on administrative tasks, bookkeeping, and scheduling while keeping up with their children, Sam and Lily.

    Her most important task, however, is supporting her husband as both a wife and business partner.

    “Thomas and I enjoy being together,” she noted. “We complement each oth-er’s strengths and weaknesses. My respect for my husband’s knowledge, cour-age and perseverance has grown exponentially as we have worked to make this dream into a reality. I am blessed to be a part of it and support him.”

    And Thomas feels blessed to have Ginny’s support. “All of her hard work allows me to do the things I do best,” he said.Although Thomas’s specialty is European car brands, opening the shop

    right before the COVID shutdown broadened its services. “At TTS, our mottois European Car Services, Personalized Customer Care, but we currently ser-vice cars of all makes,” he explained. “Working on many diff erent vehicles has been rewarding. It has allowed us to serve even more customers in ourcommunity.”

    Thomas Tuning and Service off ers everything from basic maintenance,such as oil changes and tires, to complex diagnostics and aftermarket up-grades, but the Herrick’s focus remains on establishing lasting relationshipswith customers.

    “Relationships are key to me. I want to have a relationship with each cus-tomer,” said Thomas. “I want the customers to know each chance Ginny and I get to help them with their vehicles is so important to us and that we don’ttake that for granted.”

    Thankfully the Farragut com-munity and our customer base were more than cooperative and understanding. We were able to fi nd ways to continue doing what we love even though it required some changes in the operations of the services. We were still able to continue repairing items, casting new pieces, and creating jewelry in the store.

    We saw small Jewelers across this country close their busi-nesses never to re-open. Our own industrial suppliers were shut down, and we were not sure how many of them would ever re-open. Thankfully we have been operating in our own independent

    manufacturing facilities here in Farragut for over 30 years and we did not know it, we were prepared for this.

    No longer were chain stores contracting jewelers to do repairs on-site, they required customers to ship it back to their head-quarters. Stores that just re-sell merchandise were not able to import items from overseas. From our perspective, these new drastic changes to our competition that were detrimental were benefi cial to us. We saw a large number of new customers seeking out a local Family owned business to provide them the same level of industry knowledge and skillsets. It was a

    validation of our passions and business model. We have always operated independently from the mass-produced resale portion of our industry knowing that it was fragile.     What began as a fi lling station nearly 70 years ago has suc-cessfully evolved into an outdoor living company with loca-tions across the region.

    The Great Backyard Place’s history dates back to the early 1950s, when Frank G. May opened a fi lling station in East Ridge, Tenn. Over the years, Frank G. May ventured into a variety of business endeavors, including home goods, exotic pets and toys.

    When Frank G. May passed away in 1973, his son, Tom May, took over the toy business, A&M Toys and Hobbies, expand-ing the company to include nine locations from Maryville to Chattanooga.

    Operating as A&M Family Fun Center, Tom May began selling pools in the 1970s and, in 1982, the business simply became The Pool Place. In 2004, the business fur-ther broadened its off er-ings with the addition of patio furniture, shifting its focus from pool and spas to backyard living as a whole.

    “The Great Backyard Place is not divorce with our past; rather, it is the natural evolution of our business,” says Frank C. May, the company’s CEO, who joined the family business in 2003. “Many of life’s best memories are made outside. Increas-ingly, we look at the outdoor living space of our homes as an extension and enhancement of our desire to connect, relate, and unwind.”

    Frank C. May emphasized that the company remains dedi-cated to its customers, just as it has for the past 70 years.

    “We are still committed to off ering the same best value guarantee, the same level of service and expertise, and the same passion for fi lling the unique needs of each family,” he said.

    Shreve Shreve always learning always learning for his patients for his patients Much like his profession, chiropractor Dr. David Shreve has evolved steadily down through the years, all to benefi t his patients at Inte-grated Medical Solutions of Knoxville.

    fro Field last Friday evening about their team’s

    first half performance, they may tell you the

    trict 3-AAA honors for their regular season efforts, while Hardin

    Valley Academy had three honorees.

    Topping the FHS honors was middle hitter Ellie Ackermann,

    named 3AAA Blocker of the Year, while teammate Meg Frank

    joined HVA’s Kami Livingston as Servers of the Year district-

    wide.Ackermann and Livingston both were All-District First Team

    honorees among seven who were chosen.

    Second-team honors included Amiranee Au, Farragut senior

    libero, and Hardin Valley’s Savanna Butler.

    All-District Honorable Mention selections were Lady Admiral

    Kate Priest and Kaylin Livingston of HVA.

    Concord Christian points to post-season

    Despite Concord Christian School’s three-game loss to a pow-

    erful Oak Ridge team Monday evening, Sept. 28, at CCS, Lady

    Lions head coach Carmen Hochevar recognized improvement.

    “Actually, our girls played much better against them tonight

    than the first time we played them at Oak Ridge (a four-game

    loss),” said Hochevar, whose team (18-8) goes into the Division

    II-A post-season play as a No. 2 district seed this week.

    The Lady Lions actually rallied to fight off two game points

    in the first set. Down 24-22, sophomore outside hitter Annabelle

    Sulish served a pair of aces, three service winners total, as CCS

    rallied to win game one 26-24.

    “Annabelle is pretty consistent on the back row serving,” the

    CCS coach said. But the Lady Wildcats (15-2) jumped ahead early in the next

    two games and hardly let up, winning both 25-19.

    As for other Lady Lions efforts, “Our senior, Mikayla Profeta,

    is playing really well,” Hochevar said about her middle hitter.

    Tennessee’s all-time great football

    coaches — who impacted Farragut

    High School football in the late 1970s

    — national-known actor/filmmaker

    and 1980 FHS graduate Jeff Joslin

    made a glowing comparison.“I can summarize coach Ken

    Sparks in one small sentence on why

    we want people to see this documen-

    tary. Coach Sparks was the Billy Gra-

    ham of football,” Joslin said about

    this late East Tennessee coaching

    legend who led FHS to one of its best

    three-year spans of football success

    (from 1977 through 1979) before a 37-

    year head coaching career at Carson-

    Newman University was highlighted

    by five NAIA national championships

    in the 1980s. This was among the “four stories

    I wanted to tell that spun out from

    being a quarterback for Ken Sparks

    at Farragut High School (during all

    three seasons the coach was at FHS)

    and Carson-Newman (from 1982

    through 1984),” Joslin said. “We won

    back-to-back national championships

    in ’83 and ’84.

    “His achievements as a coach … are

    staggering. He served Carson-New-

    man University from 1980 through

    2016” before losing a battle with can-

    cer, the filmmaker added, “With na-

    tional championships (also) in 1986,

    1987 and 1989.“He was the fifth winningest (col-

    lege football) coach behind John Gagliard, Joe Paterno, Ed-die Robinson and Bobby Bowden.”However, de-tailing what separated coach Sparks from other coaches he played un-der, “I played football from 6 years old to 1987, and I retired from

    football from the Canadian Football

    League. Coach Sparks was the only

    coach that cared about my spiritual

    life, my eternity and my relationship

    with Christ,” Joslin said. “He got

    me involved with the Fellowship of

    Christian Athletes at Farragut High

    School. He was the Huddle Sponsor,

    and we would have FCA meetings at

    his house on Tuesday nights.

    “He took 60-plus football players

    through the Scared Straight Program

    to hear John ‘Red’ Fuller tell about

    his conversion to Christ and life in

    prison,” he added. “He was the mean-

    est and strongest inmate of the Ten-

    nessee Prison System at that time” at

    Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary

    in Morgan County.Moreover, “In 1982 coach Sparks

    spoke in front of the parole board on

    behalf of Red Fuller,” who was pa-

    roled that year, the filmmaker said.

    Overall, coach Sparks “has im-

    pacted thousands of people with the

    message of Christ,” Joslin said. “We

    want to work with FCA and through

    their network of coaches and athletes

    to give (the documentary) to every

    coach around the globe and use it

    with the athletes in their organiza-

    tion.”The coach also influenced Tony

    Dungy, former NFL defensive back

    and Super Bowl XLI-winning head

    coach with quarterback Peyton Man-

    ning and the Indianapolis Colts.

    “After meeting Ken Sparks at an

    The Pizza Kitchen is back in busi-ness at its new location at 10420 Kings-ton Pike after taking a six-year hiatus.

    Previously located on Northshore Drive from 1998-2013, owner Travis Redmon reopened the pizza shop in October of 2019.

    “When we closed the original loca-tion in 2013, I wasn’t sure if I’d do it again,” said Redmon. “However, ev-erywhere I went for the next six years, people kept asking when we were go-ing to reopen.”

    The requests got “louder and loud-er” until last summer, when Redmon was given the opportunity to take the space in Lovell Heights Shopping Center that had housed the former Empire Pizza.

    The new location off ers appetiz-ers, salads, pasta and unique pizza options, including seasonal favorites like the Great Pumpkin Pizza. Red-mon said that Pizza Kitchen caters to the health-conscious and that their caulifl ower crust and vegan cheeses and meats are very popular.

    “We make everything from scratch daily in order to ensure our guest re-ceives the freshest product,” he said.

    Redmon says his sons, Ethan and Emory, are integral to the familybusiness, as is Tammy Miles, The Piz-za Kitchen’s general manager whoalso worked at the original location.

    “Our team is like family and we all enjoy creating a welcoming atmo-sphere for our loyal guests,” he said.
