Welcome to Baseball at Walla Walla Community College.

We’re immensely proud of the Baseball program at the College, and there is a very good reason. Coach Mike Cummins’s studentathletes have established a tradition of success: success in the classroom, success on the field as a team, and success beyond WWCC.

In the classroom, the team has maintained a consistently high grade-point average. Beyond Walla Walla Community College, these young men have prepared well for future success. Our graduates have typically transferred to four-year colleges and universities, where they have continued to have success in the classroom and on the baseball diamond.

The tradition has been established, and we continue to strive to attract young people who set high personal and performance standards and who reach for goals which stretch their abilities.

Clint Gabbard, Vice President of Student Services

PreSident’S MeSSAGe Walla Walla Community College takes great pride in its athletic program, and Baseball is a

strong example of the value of intercollegiate athletics. We want to attract student-athletes to our campus who want to achieve success in the

classroom. Our baseball team has done that since the program was formed in 1988. Classroom success is a priority. We measure this success by the extremely high percentage of our young men who have earned their degrees and continued on to four-year colleges and universities. Intercollegiate athletics in the context of training for success and education for life adds further dimension to the college curriculum. As in all we do at Walla Walla Community College, we will continue to strive to provide the environment which promotes high-quality performance and personal success throughout the student’s life.

Steven L. VanAusdlePresident, Walla Walla Community College

director of AthleticS

Welcome to the 2008-2009 Walla Walla Community College Athletic Year. At Walla Walla Community College we believe that Intercollegiate Athletics plays an integral role in the overall development of our student-athletes. The primary mission of our Athletic Department is to provide our student-athletes with

an academic and athletic experience that is conducive to teaching those skills and attributes necessary to achieve success and happiness throughout their lives. Skills such as dedication, determination, hard work, teamwork, planning, organization, and a sincere concern for the well-being of their fellow teammates lie at the forefront of what Walla Walla Community College Athletics are all about. Each and every one of our head coaches, assistant coaches, and all Athletic Department personnel are committed to seeing that this mission is carried out in a complete and professional manner. It is our goal to provide the student-athletes of Walla Walla Community College with a first-class athletic experience, while at the same time putting the primary focus on academic achievement.

As an Athletic Department we want to thank each and every one of you for the support you have given Walla Walla Community College Athletics in the past, and for the support you will continue to give us in the future. As teachers and educators we understand that support from our local community and from those communities in the surrounding area is vital to the success of our mission here at Walla Walla Community College, and that support does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. To all of our supporters, we appreciate your contributions to the development of the young men and women who are our Athletic Department. See you at the games.

MIkE CUMMInS HEAD COACH

BA, Santa Clara, 19796th Season

Head Baseball Coach Mike Cummins enters his sixth year at the helm of the Warriors after accepting the position in May of 2003. Cummins spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Washington State and previously had a 24 year coaching and playing stint at Santa Clara University – the last four as the head coach.

‘He is an outstanding human being,’ WWCC Athletic Director Jeff Reinland said. ‘He’s a real genuine person to deal with along with having an outstanding knowledge of baseball. Mike is anxious to get back into Head Coaching. He likes the Pacific Northwest and we like what he has to offer. He’s a good fit for the college.’

Playing for his father Larry at Monterey Peninsula College in 1975-76, Cummins earned his associate of arts degree in physical education after two years as a catcher for the Lobos. Following his sophomore season, he was named the team’s most valuable player and earned all-conference honors. Mike was inducted into the Monterey Peninsula College’s Hall of Fame in 2007.

In 1977, Cummins began his association with the Broncos. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1979 after playing baseball for head coach Sal Taormina for two seasons. A two-year starter as a catcher, Cummins was named the team’s most inspirational player and most valuable player following his senior season.

The next baseball stop was Buchser High in Santa Clara, where he was head baseball coach for one season, 1980. His team finished 13-8 and second in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The next fall Cummins served as a junior varsity football coach at St. Francis High in Mountain View while teaching social science classes. His JV team finished the campaign 8-2. In the fall of 1981 Cummins returned to his alma mater, serving for 17 years as an assistant baseball coach, first for Jerry McClain, then for John Oldham for 13 seasons.

His responsibilities at Santa Clara included scheduling, physical conditioning, academic counseling, fund raising and recruiting. And of course on-the-field coaching and mentoring. The Broncos won four West Coast Conference championships during his tenure as an assistant, the first in 1982 and the last in 1997. Santa Clara also earned berths in three NCAA Regional tournaments, 1988, 1994 and 1997. The Broncos were 558-439 during his 17 years as an assistant.

When Oldham retired following the 1997 season, the Broncos named Cummins his replacement. In 2001, before his departure from Santa Clara, the Broncos won the West Coast Conference divisional title at 17-13. In 2000 they were champions of the UNLV Coors Light tourney and in 1998 the Broncos captured the title at the Florida Marlin Spring tournament.

The Chico, Calif., native grew up in the Monterey area, graduating from Monterey High in 1974, where he starred in basketball and baseball.

The Cummins family includes wife Velma, sons Lawrence (27) and Patrick (23), and daughters Vanessa (18) and Marilyn (11).

DAvE MELIAH ASSISTANT COACH

BA, Washington State University, 20075th Season

Dave Meliah is in his fifth season as an assistant coach for Coach Cummins and the Warrior Baseball program. Dave grew up in Walla Walla and attended DeSales High School where he helped the Irish win three state championships. He then attended WWCC and helped the Warriors win the NWAACC Eastern Division in 1997. He was named to the NWAACC 1st team as a shortstop.

Dave continued his career by earning a scholarship to the University of San Francisco. In 1998, the Dons broke the school wins record by recording 34 victories. Dave also set the school record by hitting 19 doubles while earning 1st Team All-West Coast Conference honors as a shortstop. When Dave was at USF, Coach Cummins was the Head Baseball Coach at Santa Clara University.

In 1998, Dave was drafted in the 17th round by the Texas Rangers Organization. He signed a professional contract and played six years with the Rangers in their minor league system. His final two and a half years were spent at the AAA level in Oklahoma City. Some of his biggest professional accomplishments include playing in several big league Spring Training games with the Rangers - his last being at the Ranger’s home stadium, The Ballpark in Arlington, TX and hitting a game-winning 2-run homerun in the top of the 9th against the Mariners AAA team, the Tacoma Rainiers, on Mother’s Day in front of his family and friends.

In 2003, Dave retired from professional baseball to move back to Walla Walla to pursue a teaching degree and coaching career. He is married to his wife Jill, also a teacher and coach. They have a daughter, Emily, born July 8th, 2007.

2009 SeASon PreVieW:

The Eastern Division of the NWAACC will once again prove to be the most competitive division. The East traditionally has been the strongest and deepest with all teams winning at least 18 games last sea-son. After missing the NWAACC Tourney last year, with two one run loses in the re-gion tournament, the 2009 team has it sights set on returning to the tour-nament. The 2009 Warriors return a strong core of sophomore players led by All-East Region shortstop Keith Woelber and pitcher Ryan Richardson. The key to the season will how fast the talented group of freshman recruits adjusts to college baseball.

On October 25, 2008 the Warrior Baseball Family welcomed back almost 40 former players and coaches to participate in the 1st Annual Old Timers Alumni Game. The game was held in the evening hours to show off the new lights on Warrior Field. The stands were packed with friends and family who witnessed a well played game, eventually won by the 2009 Warriors, 11-4. We are already looking forward to and planning next year’s Alumni Weekend and are hoping to see many more of the old players. The plan is to add more events to the weekend in the future including a golf tournament.

Spearheaded by Walla Walla County Commissioner Greg Tompkins, the baseball and softball fields on the campus of WWCC were lit up for the first time on May 10, 2008. Tompkins, the father of former-Warrior star Michael Tompkins, worked closely with WWCC President Steve Van Ausdle to raise money and awareness for this project. A significant amount of money for this project was also donated by Walla Walla Valley Youth Baseball and Softball Association. The fields will now be used by numerous youth baseball and softball teams from the Walla Walla Valley as well as the WWCC baseball and softball teams. The installation of these lights has expanded the use of these fields as community fields and will allow the community to host state and region-al tournaments, which will attract people from all over the state and region to Walla Walla.

We all greatly appreciate the time, effort, and money put forth by Commissioner Tompkins, President Van Ausdle, Walla Walla Valley Youth Baseball and Softball, and all who contributed to and supported achieving the dream of “Turning the Lights on for Youth Baseball and Softball.”
