Inside A Professional Recording StudioBy: Honey Azul

N my hometown of Charlottesville VA I had the

privilege of scoping out the dopest professional Recording Studio pretty

much in the state of VA. Many may not know nor recognize the importance of a state of

the art professional Recording Studio, with the latest home study technology they can be

under estimated.

I initially met Sean,( one of the studio's Sound Engineer among many of his job titles) a few years back

when a local Artist was working with him on his album. We reconnected at a local talent showcase in

which he was one of the judges assisting in the decision of some coveted Industry prizes for the winners.

Fast forward one year later I'm Virginia Arts Recording interviewing Sean & the Owner, Chris.

With over a million dollars of equipment inside the two story studio, one may wonder whats

the big deal with a professional Recording Studio especially when I can do the same thing at home? Or

can you? True you can duplicate some of the effects & maybe even the equipment but you can not fake

the funk when it comes to the training & technique that dedicated professional bring to the table. Some

wonder why are studio prices so high, its not the usage of the equipment but the extreme

professionalism that you pay for. Studio professionals are just that professionals. They spend years

some in school & on the job learning to listen for unmatched pitches, down beats, up beats, off beats,

how to mix down, master, ect... In short if you sent in your CD with your music into a major Radio Station

or into a Record Label would they play it or even give a real listen regardless of your talent. They would

play the first 30 seconds & chuck it. Like the Studio professionals, the Radio Stations & Record Labels

are also trained to hear the difference too. Depending if this is a hobby or if your really trying to get on,

you need to invest in your craft.

Formally owner by professional Musician Paul Brier he passed the musical baton on to ChrisDoermann who puts on many different hats to cater to the Studio's many clients. National & local Artist &

musicians have chosen VA Arts recording as their one stop shop like; Dreaming Isabelle, Mute Math,

The Paschall Brother's which won the 8th Annual independent Music Award for Gospel record of

the year for 2008 & many other talents. You can find out more about these incredible &

talented people at The Virginia Arts Recording by checking out the full double

interviews @www.ATasteofHoneyTV.info, also on the exclusiveFREE DVD included with this magazine.

Cover Story:

e may all remember the clothes, the hair styles, even the bright smile. But, theres no denying theunforgettable voice that made the phenomenalperformer with a career spanning over 20 years.

Inspiring and moving millions to tears and to dream the unthinkable and reachthe unattainable. Whitney Houston is single handedly responsible for startingmany of our popular entertainers today careers such as; Brandy, Beyonce andmany more.

Daughter of Cisy Houston a gospel singer and performer in herown right. Young Whitney startedin Modeling, paving way for otherwomen of color, even beforeTyra Banks. Appearing in Catalogs, local and national Ad's, even the on

prestigious cover's of Seventeen & Glamor Magazine. Givingyoung Afro American girls a recognizable and relatable face.

As a child Whitney grew up in middle class Newark & East Orange, NJ. Herfamily was rich with performer's besides her mother, her older brother GaryGarland, Cousin Dionne Warwick & Dee Dee Warwick, Godmother DarleneLove & honorary Aunt Aretha Franklin. She started singing solo's at her churchwith the Junior Choir. Whitney experienced a tragic accident that threatenedher promising future. She was playing with a hanger & somehow she got a itstuck in her throat. She had to undergo surgery to reattach her Uvula she wasfortunate enough to be able to speak let alone sing. From a tight knit family, while her mother was on the road Whitney's fatherwould cook, clean even doing her hair. The family supported her in her careerevery step of the way. At age 14 she sang with the family gospel group theDrinkard Sisters, who recorded for RCA Records. By the time she turned 15she sung background vocals for Chaka Con on "I'm every woman." Her twoolder brother Michael & Gary helped her with her career when she decided tobecame a professional Singer like her mother. Michael became her ProductionManager while she was on tour and Gary would perform with Whitney onstage.

The Legacy Lives On...

Page 5

Whitney came into Modeling by chance. Young slender

Whitney & her mother were in New York when a young man

walked over to her & told her that the agency upstairs was looking

for Model's & she fit the type.

At bit hesitant at first but with her mother by her side shewas sign. She went on to book numerous Modeling jobs & even

Acting gigs like appearances on Silver Spoon & Gimme A Break. With

great success in Modeling & Acting she was encouraged to continue down that path but, Whitney

had a bigger & better destiny.

In 1983 Arista Records President Clive Davis spotted Whitney & almost signed her on the spot.Later that year she officially signed with Aritsa Records & Clive immediately took the young

starlet under his wing only giving her the best songs, producers & opportunities for her to shine.

And shine she did, her first self titled album released in the US on Valentine's Day in 1985 had aslow start until finally selling a historic 14 million. Winning her first Grammy & nominated for 2 others, in

1986 & 1987 she won 7 American Music Awards & MTV Music Video Award.

Houston's performance of, "I'm Saving All My Love",. Later during that year she earned

her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music

Program. But, her ball had just started rolling!

Whitney made a huge Acting splash with her debut film role as feisty

Singer Rachel Marron opposite of Kevin Costner. And the album did even better with

the remake of a Chaka Khan, I'm Every Woman", the iconic remake of a Dolly Parton song,"I Will Always

Love You". & " I Have Nothing", winning her 3 Grammys, 8 American Music Awards,11 Billboard Music

Awards,3 Soul Train Music Awards, 5 NAACP Image Awards, 5 World Music Awards & BRIT award.

With mega movies hits such as, "Waiting to Exhale", "The Preachers Wife" & made for

TV movie Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella" & her last film project, " Sparkle", Whitney solidified herself

as a bonafide Actress. More accolades followed for her hard work, persistence & talent. She went on to win a

total of 22 American Music Awards, 31 Billboard Music Awards, 2 Emmy Awards, 7 Grammy Awards, 2

Guinness World Records, 16 NAACP Image Awards, 6 People's Choice Awards, 8 Soul Train Music Awards,

6 World Music Awards, with 564 total Worldwide Award nominations & a unbelievable 490 plus Worldwide

Award winnings. Not bad for a Afro-America woman, that had her vocal cords reconstructed.

She will always be remembered as The Voice whether for her opinions & herdetermination knocking down barriers for Afro-American Women or

her singing. For more about her amazing life, just google Whitney Houston.

The Motivational Cowboy,Johnny DBy: Honey Azul

Motivate |ˈmōtəˌvāt|: To provide with anincentive; move to action: impel.

Tip #1 Tip #2

Johnny Dmytryszyn has been motivating people forover 12 years. How wonderful is it to know what youdo for a living is your gift from God? That your beingpaid to do what you love & your helping people. As Iinterviewed Johnny I could see he had a true passionfor his craft. He just wrapped the Chevy event inDover Delaware in which we both had the pleasure.

With the vigorous tour schedule with various

clients, speaking engagements & promotional events

for his book, Finish Line & his CD Outstanding

Bound, Johnny D stays busy. But in the same breath

very humble. Never receiving formal training for his

career choice, he has done exceptionally well for himself.

"School wasn't my thing, it is not for everybody. So

what I did was took the best in business & learned

what they did best & did exactly what they do." His

dedication to his craft is one not seen to often. Before

booking paid gigs & packed rooms, his first 28 gig was

completely free. He describes his first paid gig, " The

time I was so scared, I was across the street for 20 minutes ready to throw up.

I was so nervous but, I got paid $250.00 for my first 20 minute speech. And

then I was hooked!"

Johnny has several new projects lined up, including a his new CD

Outstanding Bound with some of his friends in the music business

accompanying him. In addition he has been confronted

with a opportunity with a major network for a reality

TV show strictly about the Motivational Speaking

industry. You can purchase his books, CD's, apparel

or find out where his next speaking engagement will be

at www.motivationalcowboy.com & catch the full interview

on our website at www.atasteofhoneytv.info.

Tip #3A dream is reality in themaking. Go straight to the top, don't settle for themiddle. Dare to live beyond your limitations.

Full of bubbly energy with a great smile. She gladly granted me a interview in-between her many duties at

the Dover Speedway in Delaware. Miss Sprint Cup has the privilege of being a positive face by traveling nationwide

to all the NASCAR events & encouraging young girls to get involved with thier favorite sports, to pursue a

healthy lifestyle & a education. Kristen is a great example of a turning a hobby into a positive & powerful

career move! She grew up loving NASCAR racing, so she submitted a application for Miss Sprint Cup to a

modeling agency put her through the interview process & the rest is history. But, she is more than a

pretty face she received her degree in Communications & minor in Pre-Law. You can catch the full interview @

Radio personality for Radio One in Richmond VA Miss Clovia AKA Miss Community Clovia has a career

spanning 25 years, 15 of which with Radio One. She received her Bachelor's in Art degree from Virginia Union

University. The radio station she interned hired her upon her graduation. Community Clovia has been

very instrumental in the Metro area's community efforts including, the elections, fundraisers,

community walks to raise awareness for Cancer, Heart Disease & other illnesses. Her passion for the

community has afforded her the opportunity to interview influential people such as; President & First

Lady Obama, Spike Lee, Governor Mark Warner & many Artists. You can view the full interview @ www.ATasteofHoneyTV.info.

Not your ordinary TV personality, Miss Voda is a sweet down to earth and unique woman. As I waited at The Martinsville VA

Raceway after a live taping of Trackside, Miss Voda signed every autograph and remembered many of the race goers from previous races, even

dating over a year ago. If anyone thinks that Racing is no place for a woman, then they never met nor watched Krista Voda on air. She is very

well spoken not missing a beat, polished & professional. Receiving her Bachelor's of Art in Broadcast Journalism &

Communications at The University of Northern Iowa. She recalled to me about her earlier days in the field,

" As a early journalist one would shot your own footage, wrote your own story, edited your own highlights & threw t

hem on the air. " When it comes to education in this field she stated that, " it's really important to focus on the skills, writing &

good interviewing can not be replaced." Catch the entire interview visit,www.ATasteofHoneyTV.info.

ATH-TV Takes Over Colorado! As we were getting heated up in a chilly Colorado, ATH-TV was excitedto be visited by Ashley M. Kalfas. Ashley happens to be a unique and talented

On a typical frosty February dayin Colorado Springs, ATH-TVwas just heated up with our

itinerary. One of our first stops was by the Olympic training center to see Gold Metalhopeful ED Fernon. Sweet sounds great, right? Well, the funny punchline is we did notoriginally intend to interview the world class Pentathlete. Like many people, when visitingColorado Springs we only arrived at the training center to take a basic tour as we were

informed that it was arguably the most renowned site in the city. After takingthe tour and learning more about some of the greatest Olympians of all timesranging from Muhammad Ali to Carl Lewis. We caught up with Ed as hewas coming from his daily training. Ed is from Sidney Australia and was at the Olympic Training Centerfor a few weeks in preparation for what was at the time a much closer

challenge, which was the World Cup in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ed shared that he hasbeen competing for five years with the goal in mind of making the 2012 Olympics. To seeEd Fernon's interview in it's entirety, visit @ ww.ATasteofHoneyTV.info.

MagnificatMagazine....As I walked into the 30 story building, I was torn between feelings

of doubt , shock and nervousness. Shock because the building was colossal and I was expecting anestablishment that was much more humble. Doubt because, when I first entered the buildingwas not sure where I was to repot or if I was in the right location altogether. Lastly, thenervousness came from the realization of knowing I was on deck to interview one of the mostsuccessful magazine's in the state of Colorado. Within moments I was greeted by the ownerand co-owner of Pieces Magazine. Pieces Magazine is a national magazine based out ofHighlands Range Colorado, a lovely town not far from major cities Denver and ColoradoSprings. When speaking with Adam and Rachelle they explained that Pieces Magazineconsists of the publication giving everyday people the opportunity to submit their stories and if

the story is liked by Pieces then one may have their story published in the major Magazine. Adam andRochelle are not only partners in business but they are also partners in life, husband and wife with beautifulchildren. To find out more about Pieces go to our website, www.ATasteofHoneyTV.info.

INDUSTRY

INSIDER BY: HONEY AZUL

Dear Industry Insider,Hello how are you? I just wanted toknow if you could give me some helpto lead me the right way to start a tvshow. Who I need to talk to, where tobegin, what I'm looking for the goodside and bad side. Thanks inadvance if you able to help me.Jane Morgan.

Page 13

Dear Jane, thank you for your question. A great start wouldbe a local Public Access Center. You can find one in yourarea by searching online. PA Centers have all the resourcesyou need to get started. You can take classes in properproduction standards and find other talented people tohelp with your project. You need to also figure out yourtopic. The good side of having your own TV show is you cancover whatever topic of your intrest and have "your" voiceheard. The bad, rather the challenging part is the timeconsuming steps listed below1) Pre-Production: planing a shoot, getting your contenttogether, location, guests,ect2) Production: The actual shoot3) Post-Production: the editing, dubbing process, ectBut, again after all that watching your show onair is its ownreward!
