Because of several new program and product releases in September 2014, a Special Edition Training Bulletin was posted to the Pros’ Site in August to keep you up to date. Be sure to access and read that bulletin. Some articles from that edition are summarized here.

New ReActivateTM Program Student divers are reminded often throughout PADI courses to refresh their dive knowledge and skills after a period of inactivity. The newly released PADI ReActivate program offers certifi ed divers a convenient, prescriptive and enjoyable way to brush up on the basics and regain confi dence in the water.

A recent PADI survey asked divers what would get them back in the water if they had not been diving for a while. Two popular responses were: “a refresher course that I can complete quickly” and “a prescriptive approach that refreshes only what I’ve forgotten.” With this in mind, ReActivate allows divers to review dive concepts on their tablets or computers at a personal pace and then you provide only as much guidance and coaching as the diver needs in the water. ReActivate is a modern, more intuitive means to refresh diver knowledge and skills, replacing PADI Scuba Review.

Training

How Does It Work? A PADI Diver purchases the knowledge

refresher delivered as ReActivate Touch or Online. Either you provide an access code or the diver buys it through a link on the new PADI App (see related article in this edition). If purchased through the app, divers are required to affi liate with a PADI Dive Center or Resort, and revenue share models apply. One code provides access to both product versions. ReActivate Touch is an interactive program for

tablets and mobile devices. ReActivate Online is the PC/Mac version.

The content presents various realistic diving scenarios and divers answer questions based on each scenario. This tests multiple concepts at once and applies previous learning in an integrated context.

Correct answers move the diver to next scenario.

Incorrect responses move the diver to explanations, refresher learning and a new, but similar, scenario to confi rm learning.

After completing all topics, the diver takes the ReActivate Quick Review online as a fi nal assessment. When all questions are answered correctly, a ReActivate certifi cate is generated. The diver is

encouraged to take the certifi cate to you to complete the ReActivate water skills session. Active status PADI Divemasters and above can conduct this session.

If the diver doesn’t complete the Quick Review online, you can administer the ReActivate Quick Review1, which is available in many languages and can be downloaded from the PADI Pros’ Site.

The diver must complete the water skills session in addition to the knowledge review to receive a replacement certifi cation card bearing the “ReActivated On” date.

Conduct the ReActivate water skills session in either confi ned water or open water. As explained in the ReActivate Instructor

Guide2 and associated PADI’s Guide to Teaching3, interview divers to see what skills

they want to review. Divers can indicate their comfort level with each skill by using the PADI Skill Practice and Dive Planning Slate.

Observe divers during predive preparation and in the water to see what they may need to practice.

Have divers demonstrate key safety-related skills as listed in the instructor guide and generally remediate skills as necessary.

Help divers gain confi dence with scuba diving, prescriptively, based on each diver’s needs and wants.

After completing both the knowledge and skills refresher, process a replacement certifi cation card with the diver’s ReActivate date.

When a diver purchases the ReActivate product, a unique code is assigned to the diver. You see this code in the PADI Dive Center or Resort’s Online Processing Center on the PADI Pros’ Site. The diver’s ReActivate certifi cate also shows this unique code.

Use this code to process a replacement PADI certifi cation card for the diver through the Online Processing Center – ReActivate section. For more information about codes, check the Online Processing Center Help4 document.

If the diver takes the Quick Review with you, enter the date completed. If the diver takes it online, the system fi lls this in automatically.

The diver chooses which diver-level PADI certifi cation card to replace. A ReActivate date can be placed on any non-professional-level certifi cation card the diver has earned,

including all specialty diver ratings. However, it must be an inwater diving course.

The process is simple – confi rm the diver’s card choice, choose the card style (Project AWARE cards are an option with a donation), check that a ReActivate knowledge review date is there, supply the ReActivate dive skills refresher date and process the card. Cards are sent directly to the diver.

ImplementationYou may begin using ReActivate now, with required implementation 1 October 2015. At some point in 2015:• ReActivate will become accessible to divers ages

10-12 with parent/guardian permissions; and, • A special PADI ReActivate card will be available

for nonPADI divers taking the program. The card is not a certifi cation card, but still acknowledges that the diver refreshed basic knowledge and skills.

TranslationsBy the end of fi rst quarter 2015, ReActivate materials will be also be available in Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish, with Polish, Arabic, Korean, Chinese and Japanese following. Check with your PADI Regional Headquarters for translation details.

Other Uses for ReActivate ReActivate is intended for certifi ed divers who want to refresh knowledge and skills. However, you can use the program for other purposes.

Junior DiversAlthough not required for PADI Junior Divers who are now age 15 or older, ReActivate is a great way to upgrade divers to an “adult” card. These divers benefi t from refreshing their knowledge and skills, and can get a ReActivate date on their new card to confi rm it.

Referred Entry-level DiversScuba Review was required to assess referred entry-level divers from other certifi cation organizations who want to earn the PADI Open Water Diver certifi cation. This standard in the Open Water Diver Course Instructor Guide, under Referrals from Other Organizations, has changed to:

When receiving a referred diver from another training organization for course completion, follow the Referral Procedures in the General Standards and Procedures Guide. To assess the referred diver’s knowledge and skills, administer the ReActivate Quick Review or Open Water Diver Course fi nal exam, and conduct a confi ned water dive that reviews Open Water Diver course skills in preparation for open water training dives.

PADI Scuba Diver Upgrades and Continuing Education AssessmentsScuba Review was recommended, but not required, for assessing PADI Scuba Divers who want to upgrade to the PADI Open Water Diver certifi cation, and for assessing divers before a continuing education course. For these assessments, ReActivate materials along with a prescriptive dive skills refresher may work well for some divers. For other divers, you may assess their readiness to continue using other PADI materials and methods. The following will be added to PADI’s Guide to Teaching to help guide your assessments:

Assessing Knowledge, Skills and ReadinessYou may complete training for referred student divers and accept certifi ed divers into a PADI course after conducting a knowledge and skill assessment. This assessment is important to determine a diver’s readiness to continue. If there are gaps in prerequisite knowledge or diffi culty with foundational skills, a diver will need remediation to ensure success before continuing with training.Knowledge assessment can occur using these tools:• PADI ReActivate Touch or Online• PADI Scuba Tune-up Guidebook• PADI Open Water Diver course quizzes• PADI Open Water Diver course fi nal exam• PADI Open Water Diver Online Quick Review• Quick Review in PADI Adventures in Diving manualSkill assessments can occur by conducting the ReActivate water skills session as a prescriptive skills assessment, or using the PADI Skill Evaluation Slate or Open Water Diver Course Confi ned Water Cue Cards as a guide for reviewing skills. Have referred and noncertifi ed divers only review the skills they’ve already learned in confi ned water.

New PADI Mobile AppWhen people want information about diving, it only makes sense that they use a mobile app that supplies everything they need – the new PADI App – available for iOS and Android devices. Features include:

Dive Shop Locator integrated with dive site locations from ScubaEarth®. Divers can fi nd a local dive center plus nearby dive sites and check diving conditions on ScubaEarth.

Dive destinations from padi.com PADI social media and dive news feeds PADI course information, including the new ReActivate program. Divers also have

access to all purchased Touch and digital materials via the PADI Library App. And, will fi nd links to purchase PADI eLearning programs and Touch products.

Dive tools (digital dive tables), quick references (diver hand signals and a knot-tying how-to) as well as safety and dive planning reminders and checklists. Plus, divers can log dives within ScubaEarth from the app.

Access to PADI eCardsTM

Access to PADI Gear PADI Pros’ Site link to access the information you need.

Various other features will release as they become available. The new personalized PADI App will help divers stay better connected to scuba diving and the services you provide. Be sure to update the PADI App on your mobile device.

PADI Open Water Diver TouchTM – Exams and Purchase OptionseRDPML/RDP Table section that includes “how-to” videos for both dive planners. Conveniently, the Open Water Diver Touch includes an eRDPML Touch product, but Touch users can learn to use either RDP version and then complete the related exam. If you want your student divers to complete this section, be sure to let them know. The RDP exam score is also recorded on the eRecord.

What does this mean for you?First, you may have new student divers who purchase the Touch through padi.com and choose to affi liate with your dive center or resort. You’ll receive an email when you get a new student diver and receive a revenue share of the sale. Touch users may complete all knowledge development independently and come to you with an eRecord to fi nish training. Like eLearners, have Touch users take the eLearning Quick Review.

Next, Touch users don’t have to take the quizzes and fi nal exam on their tablets. If you prefer, you can continue to administer them in person.

During Fourth quarter 2014, all new PADI Open Water Diver Touch users will be able to take the Open Water Diver course quizzes and fi nal exam from their tablets. Touch users already complete chapter Knowledge Reviews this way, and now can fi nish all knowledge development requirements from the convenience of their tablets.

In addition, the PADI Open Water Diver Touch will become a product option on padi.com as well as through a link from the new PADI App. When student divers purchase the Touch through padi.com or via the PADI App, they must affi liate with a PADI Dive Center or Resort. Because the Touch certifi cation processing credit remains in place, you’ll see the access codes for affi liated Touch users in your PADI Online Processing Center.

Upon successful completion of the quizzes and exams, Touch users will receive an eRecord documenting completion of Knowledge Reviews, four quizzes and the fi nal exam.

Touch users also can go through an optional

Specialty CoursesNew PADI Equipment Specialist TouchTM

The PADI Equipment Specialist Touch provides PADI Instructors with a new, optional tool to assist in teaching the PADI Equipment Specialist course. This new interactive, multimedia, tablet-based program goes over the features and function of current dive equipment. Based on the Dive Theory Online – Equipment section, it covers:

Types of Scuba Systems (including open circuit and rebreathers)

Scuba Cylinders and Valves

Regulators

Instrumentation (including SPG, dive computers, depth gauges and compasses)

Enriched Air Equipment

The English PADI Equipment Specialist Touch iOS (Apple) version and the Android (Google) version (excluding Kindle) will launch in fourth quarter 2014. Similar to other touch products, it comes with certifi cation card processing.

How It Works Purchase the product and manage credits

through the PADI Online Processing Center. Email a Touch access code to the student diver,

which automatically affi liates the diver with you. The diver uses the unique code to set up an

account. The diver downloads the PADI Library App

from the iTunes app store. From within the PADI Library App, the diver downloads the PADI Equipment Specialty Touch (fi le size approximately 680 MB). As there is no Knowledge Review, the diver can view the product completely offl ine.

The diver goes through the content before your PADI Equipment Specialist course practical session. Ask student divers to come with notes and questions about equipment features or functions, and anything they didn’t understand.

How to Complete the Process After student divers meet all performance requirements for the PADI Equipment Specialist course, you can use their Touch code to process a certifi cation card through the PADI Online Processing Center. If you provided divers with the product, you simply process the card using the code associated with each diver.

The unique touch code is also found on the About Me page on the touch product. The diver can print it out showing – First Name, Last Name, product name (Equipment Specialty) and Touch code. Any PADI Equipment Specialty Instructor who completes the diver’s training can process a certifi cation card using this code. This accommodates the traveling diver who is referred to another PADI Instructor.

New AWARE Dive Against Debris Distinctive SpecialtyThe new Project AWARE Dive Against Debris Distinctive Specialty course is a tool you can use to educate divers about trash in the ocean. By teaching this course, you engage divers in a unique, hands-on activity that contributes to conservation efforts via data collection. We know that there is strong consumer interest, as marine conservation was one of the most popular interest areas indicated by a PADI Diver survey conducted early in the year.

The ultimate goal of Project AWARE’s marine debris program is to contribute signifi cantly to stopping rubbish from entering the ocean. Unless there is an accurate picture supported by data to demonstrate the extent of the marine debris problem, it’s diffi cult to effectively drive change. By conducting this specialty course and completing Dive Against Debris surveys, you and your student divers help defi ne the scope of the problem from a perspective that only scuba divers can provide – underwater.

The course teaches divers to effectively and consistently carry out Dive Against Debris surveys from planning the dive to reporting the data. It prepares divers to participate and support your routine Dive Against Debris surveys, join other surveys, or, to start surveys of their own.

Course Goals To educate divers about the effect of marine

debris – the damage done, what it is, where it comes from, and how divers are part of the solution.

To give divers the knowledge and skills needed to conduct a Dive Against Debris survey – considerations for creating a survey dive profi le, use of photography, and how to determine what to remove (and how to do so safely), and what to leave behind.

To highlight the steps needed to record and report dive fi ndings – weigh, sort, record, dispose, and report.

To explain how to join the global Project AWARE movement of scuba divers protecting our ocean planet.

Course materials include the Dive Against Debris Distinctive Specialty Course Instructor Guide, which incorporates the Dive Against Debris Survey Guide, Survey Lesson Guides, Data Card, Marine Debris Identifi cation Guide, online data submission form, as well as Project AWARE’s Ten Tips for Divers to Protect The Ocean Planet. Download these materials1 at no cost.

You can teach the course via independent study (using the Survey Guide), or through instructor-led presentations using the Survey Lesson Guides. Divers who complete the open water dive receive the Dive Against Debris distinctive specialty rating. The dive consists of preparing and removing underwater debris, recording what and how much debris was found, and reporting the information to Project AWARE.

Divers must be PADI (Junior) Open Water Divers or higher and at least age 12 to enroll in the course. At course completion, encourage divers to donate to ocean protection by choosing a Project AWARE version of their PADI certifi cation card.

To become a Dive Against Debris Distinctive Specialty Instructor and get hands-on practice in conducting the course, take a specialty instructor training course from a PADI Course Director. If you have issued 25 diver certifi cations, you may also apply directly to your PADI Regional Headquarters. Download a PADI Specialty Instructor application2 from the PADI Pros’ Site. There’s no logged dive requirement. All instructor application fees are donated to Project AWARE.1 - www.projectaware.org/DiveAgainstDebrisSpecialty 2 - PADI Pros’ Site/Training Essentials/Forms & Applications/English/Instructor - Member Level/Specialty Course Instructor Application

PADI Free Diver Distinctive Specialty – Clarifications

The PADI Free Diver Distinctive Specialty course launched fi rst quarter 2014. The following will help clarify some of the Free Diver Distinctive Specialty standards:

Instructor PrerequisitesTo apply for the PADI Free Diver Distinctive Specialty Instructor rating, document your free diving experience, such as evidence of formal training, completion of free diving workshops, written history of experience, or assisting other free diving professionals during training activities. Purchase the PADI Free Diver Distinctive Specialty Course Instructor Guide before submitting your application, so you can review the course performance requirements and assure that you have the abilities and personal skills needed to teach the course.

Depth LimitsIn the PADI Free Diver Distinctive Specialty course, depth limits listed are target depths for students to reach during training free dives. These target depths allow the instructor to assess mastery. These depths are not intended to defi ne a certain level of free diving certifi cation. For example, the PADI Free Diver certifi cation card does not “certify” students to free dive to a specifi c depth.

Safety Lanyard The course instructor guide states that all open water dives are completed using a safety lanyard secured to the student diver and to a weighted vertical line that is buoyed on the surface. The intent behind the use of the lanyard and line is for safety and to help maintain control of the student. However, in some areas the use of a safety lanyard may not be appropriate due to the risk of fl oating kelp and other debris (fi shing line) getting tangled on a weighted line. It is the instructor’s responsibility to conduct an assessment to ensure that potential risks during the open water dives are managed by either using the safety lanyard or by another appropriate method, such as the use of certifi ed assistants, or a reduction of the student diver-to-instructor ratio to provide adequate control both underwater and at the surface. Future versions of the instructor guide will explain this approach to safety.

Temporary PADI eCardsTM For All PADI DiversBeginning fourth quarter 2014, divers will receive temporary PADI eCards after completing PADI courses. Temporary eCards serve the same purpose as both the paper temporary card found on the printed PIC envelope and the training completion email divers receive when using PIC Online. While waiting for the certifi cation card, the temporary card confi rms the diver’s certifi cation date and level, which, when presented to dive operators, allows them access to diving services.

Conveniently displayed on a smartphone, the temporary eCard is less likely to be accidently lost or destroyed, and is more desirable than having the diver present an email to confi rm certifi cation.

How it Works When a certifi cation is processed, the diver receives an

email invitation to access a free temporary eCard through the PADI App, and has 15 days to activate it.

The email includes log-in information and a list of iOS and Android devices that support the PADI App and eCard.

After the diver logs on from the emailed link, the 30-day temporary eCard is produced, including an option to purchase a PADI eCard.

The temporary eCard download displays a message with an expiration countdown timer: “Expires in __ days” that auto-updates daily. At 30 days, the temporary eCard auto-deletes.

Divers may upgrade from the temporary eCard to a PADI eCard via a link in the email or directly from the temporary eCard. The link takes the diver to PADI Replacement Card Online, where the diver verifi es the certifi cation level and has the option to make a Project AWARE donation.

Your student divers will continue to receive the plastic PADI certifi cation card. If your student divers would also like PADI eCards, you can order them through Replacement Card Online when you complete processing through PIC Online. Then your student divers will have eCards on order when they get the email invitation for temporary eCards before receiving plastic certifi cation cards.

Tec Deep Instructor Prerequisite Allowance

Tec Deep Instructors are currently required to have issued 10 or more PADI Deep Diver and/or PADI Enriched Air Diver certifi cations prior to submitting a Tec Deep Instructor application. Effective immediately, PADI TecRec certifi cations (except Gas Blender certifi cations) may also be included in the 10 required certifi cations. This enables Tec, Tec Sidemount and PADI Rebreather Instructors to count TecRec certifi cations towards becoming a Tec Deep Instructor.

Also note that if you meet all the requirements to become a PADI Tec Deep Instructor except for the 10 certifi cations-requirement (referenced above), you meet the requirements for PADI Tec Instructor. This means you can submit a Tec Instructor application to your PADI Regional Headquarters, and as soon as you receive approval, begin teaching Discover Tec and Tec 40. You are also eligible to apply for some TecRec Specialty Instructor courses. Teaching Tec 40 and Tec specialty courses will help you achieve your Tec Deep Instructor rating.

This option will be noted in future editions of the Tec Deep Instructor Manual.

Emergency First Response (EFR®) Compressions-Only CPR Program

Over the last few years, many articles have been published about the benefi ts of compression-only (or “hands-only”) CPR. This technique involves providing continuous chest compressions, without stopping to provide ventilations. Compression-only CPR can effectively circulate unused oxygen left in the patient’s lungs and blood stream to the vital organs of the body.

There are additional benefi ts to compression-only CPR. The steps to perform CPR are fewer, making it easier for the rescuer to remember and for emergency dispatch personnel to instruct over the phone. Additionally, those with fears of disease transmission feel more comfortable providing chest compressions without rescue breaths. While being skilled to offer both compressions and rescue breathing is preferable in an emergency situation, without a doubt, providing compression-only CPR is better than doing nothing for a victim of cardiac arrest.

Effective immediately, EFR Instructors can now offer Compression-only CPR training using the current CPR & AED Participant Manual and instructor guide.

How it WorksOrganize your class as you would for teaching the EFR CPR & AED program. After issuing the EFR CPR & AED Participant Manual, use the following course sequence and adapt it to meet participant needs.

Have participants study independently or go over the following Knowledge Development topics during the class: The Chain of Survival and You Helping Others in Need Activating The Emergency Medical Service-

Call First And Care First During skill practice, have participants complete

the following Skill Development sections: CPR & AED Skill 1: Scene Assessment CPR & AED Skill 2: Primary Assessment CPR & AED Skill 3: Adult CPR-Chest

Compressions The training can be completed in as little as one hour and there is no requirement to register your participants.

out s

nt’s

g

Compression-only CPR training is not designed to meet work place requirements for CPR, nor does it meet the CPR requirement for PADI courses. Consequently, it does not result in the participant receiving a course completion card. However, you may choose to issue an optional EFR Participant Certifi cate (Product No. 40021).

This program is ideal to offer as a community service. Costs of the materials are low, and the time to complete the program is minimal. Your students will want to retain the participant manual as a reference book for the future, and will be great candidates for the other EFR programs you offer.

For more information about using this training to further develop your EFR business contact your local Emergency First Response Instructor Trainer or your EFR Regional Headquarters.

These instructions* will be added to the CPR & AED Instructor Guide at its next printing and will be posted on the PADI and Emergency First Response Pros’ Sites.* PADI Pros’ Site/Training Essentials/EFR
