All-Hazards ResponseAs cities prepared for the 2005 hurricane season (which included Hurricanes Katrina and Rita), many found it difficult or impossible to evacuate the special needs population from hospitals and other long-term care facilities. In New Orleans, hundreds of buses that could have been converted were left in the flood plain and were eventually ruined due to water damage. The AmbuBus® makes mass evacuation of non-ambulatory persons efficient, effective, affordable, and simple using those very buses. In addition to hurricanes, the AmbuBus® is ideal for disaster planning and preparedness for:

Ambulance LimitationsAmbulances are capable of transporting only two patients per trip, making them inefficient and costly to operate during mass casualty incidents. Most large buses can be retrofitted with one AmbuBus® Kit (two frames) to transport up to 18 stretcher-bound patients when the majority of bus seats are removed. These configurations leave ample room for medical personnel and equipment. AmbuBus® installation can be customized to allow for space for additional medical staff, ambulatory patients, wheelchairs, and more.

Bus AvailabilityRegardless of a locality’s size, there are always buses available for public or student transportation needs. By incorporating these buses and the AmbuBus® Kit into disaster plans, communities can be more prepared to help those with special needs. Localities can store palletized, stackable AmbuBus® Kits in bus depots to allow for easy installation in case of disaster or mass casualty incident.

Quick, Simple InstallationOnce the seats are removed from the bus, it takes two people one hour to install two frames for a full AmbuBus® deployment. The AmbuBus® Kit comes with illustrated instructions and an installation tool kit that includes all the hand tools necessary to install the kit. Power tools may be used but are not required.

What can the AmbuBus® Kit be installed inside?The AmbuBus® Kit expands in length, width, and height for installation into most types of school buses, transit buses, shipping containers, trucks (i.e. U-Hall), or any other vehicle of opportunity. It can also be cut to fit customized specifications.

Do the bus seats have to be removed in order to install the AmbuBus® Kit?No, the AmbuBus® Kit can be installed over the standard seats in school and other transport buses. (See photo at right)

What types of stretchers can be used with the AmbuBus®?The AmbuBus® is designed to accept most standard NATO regular and oversized stretchers with a 1.5” diameter handle, like the AmbuStretcher®. These are commonly used by US Military and first responders.

Is the AmbuBus® Kit reusable?Yes, the AmbuBus® can be disassembled, stored, retrieved, and re-installed for multiple uses. The steel frame is easily decontaminated, allowing for reuse after the kit has been used or exposed to medical contamination and/or CBRN materials.

What training is required before assembling the AmbuBus® Kit?First Line Technology provides a fee-based training seminar upon request. Training can take place either at the purchaser’s location or at First Line’s Northern Virginia training facility.

Can the AmbuBus® Kit be used free-standing?Yes, the AmbuBus® Kit has functionality outside of a transport vehicle. The kit can be used as sleeping quarters or staging areas for responders and evacuees, inside medical tents for casualties, inside hospital hallways to increase patient beds, and/or for mortuary affairs.

How many patients can be transported simultaneously using the AmbuBus® Kit?The number of patients who can be transported in one vehicle depends on the installation configuration used. One stand kit allows for up to 18 non-ambulatory passengers. One wheelchair package allows for up to three wheelchair bound patients. All configurations allow for medical personnel and equipment.

How long does it take to install an AmbuBus® Kit?Once the seats are removed from the bus, it takes two people about one hours to install two frames using the hand tools provided. Seat removal depends on the bus type and takes 45 minutes to two hours.

Is the structural integrity of the vehicle changed with the installation of the AmbuBus® Kit?No, the installation of the AmbBus® Kit does not require any changes to be made to the vehicle itself. The AmbuBus® installs using pressure fittings (see photo at right) that allow installation without drilling any holes, which ensures that the vehicle can return to performing its primary function.

What is the AmbuBus® frame made of?The frame is made of zinc-coated structural steel to allow for long-term, rust-free storage.

Compact Size - Easily TransportableThe length of the BabyPod is slightly more than one meter (39.37 inches) and is intended for infants weighing up to 17.6 lbs. (8 kg). Its compact size allows for safe, easy transport of a pediatric patient. A unique system featuring FAA-approved webbing straps and quick release buckles allows the BabyPod to be mounted to any patient transport device, like the AmbuBus®, AmbuStretcher®, or any transport litter. Patient Visibility and AccessThe BabyPod has a transparent lid that allows for excellent visibility of the infant patient. The lid is secured at both the "Head" and "Foot" with an easy access turn knob. Once released, the lid fully opens to allow the patient to be placed into or removed from the unit, or treated before and after transport. During transport, access to the infant is allowed via 4 access ports - two on either side of the lid. Access for ventilators, syringes, tubing, or wires is provided through two fixed openings on each end of the lid.

10G CRASH TESTThe BabyPod is the only transport isolette to comply with European Ambulance Standards (CEN 1789) requirements. Compliance requires 10G crash test survivability, which represents survivability during a crash at 30 mph (55 kph).

SHOCK ABSORBENT FOAM INTERIORThe interior of the BabyPod is a fully removable set of shock absorbent foam sections. Each section consists of two types of foam: a soft "memory" foam and a "shock absorbent" foam. The memory foam faces toward the patient and is primarily for patient comfort. The shock absorbent foam is for patient safety and absorbs movement from any bumps or knocks that may occur during transportation. Each foam section has a cover that is impervious to bacteria and impermeable to blood, secretions, IV solutions, urine, and water vapor. The covers are fully removable and can be wiped clean or machine washed and dried.

The BabyPod is designed to be a flexible transport solution for infants. Additional components are easily mounted to the pod itself, or to the trolley or stretcher on which the BabyPod is secured for transfer. Optional brackets to mount syringe drivers, pumps, and ventilators are available. This additional equipment can be mounted directly to the pod with access through specific slots in the lid. A flexible, multi-directional umbilical arm inside the BabyPod helps keep the tubing in place.

The TransWarmer® Mattress is heated by a single-use exothermic reaction within a non-toxic gel. Even outside of the BabyPod, the TransWarmer® Mattress can be a variable source of warmth anywhere in the NICU/PICU, or anywhere else that newborns can experience cold stress.

WVSM Software –Wi reless Multiple Patient MonitoringThe WVSM®’s wireless monitors are placed on the patient at the point of injury and provide a seamless acquisition and transmission of information throughout transport and treatment. Multiple patients sync simultaneously to a mobile computer and alert the user to changing patient vital signs trends. The software used by the WVSM® can be used wirelessly with any portable computer equipped with Windows XP and WiFi and is capable of capturing up to 4.5 hours of patient data and trending for up to 20 patients.

It integrates with the AmbuBus® and is designed to NATO specifications. Each stretcher or litter includes two black straps for patient transport. The green nylon webbing on the stretcher folds for compact storage and is easily decontaminated. 500 lb. weight capacity. Available individually or in crated kits.

AMBUSTRETCHER® BEDDING KITThe AmbuBus®-compatible AmbuStretcher® Bedding Kit features the Absorbent Patient Litter System (APLS), disposable bedding designed for the AmbuStretcher® and other standard stretchers that comes vacuum sealed and includes the APLS pad, fitted sheet, flat sheet, and a blue fleece blanket. The APLS pad is a portable/disposable absorbent pad that allows for the absorption and capture of up to 2.9 liters of blood, bodily fluids, and/or solutions. The APLS pad possesses a fluid barrier on one side to assist with safety, cleanliness, and infection control concerns relating to transport of patients on stretcher or litters and evacuation vehicle floors.
