    The Toughest Return…

In 2016, Outside Magazine crunched the numbers on which sports are the toughest.’ Using a variety of measures, the unanimous verdict was that ‘Nordic Skiing’ is the World’s toughest sport. The competitive universe was whittled down from a long list, but in the end compared rock climbing, open water swimming, downhill mountain biking, ultra-running and Nordic or xc skiing. The elevation of Nordic skiing to the top of the table was because it requires the endurance of ultra running, the sprint speed of mountain biking, the mental toughness of open water swimming and at times can put skiers in situations of extreme exposure. Hence, to be ultimately successful in the sport, athletes must maintain unparalleled cardiovascular fitness in addition to muscular strength and conditioning. With that in mind and with the 27th Worldloppet Kangaroo Hoppet on our doorstep, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the 1,000’s of competitors, from over 21 countries and wish you all the best of luck in your chosen event - either the 7km Joey Hoppet, the 21km Australian Birkebeiner, or the gruelling 42km Kangaroo Hoppet… may the toughest win!Falls Creek is the Home of Australian XC skiing, but will we see an Australian winner on the Podium? Not since 2011 and 2009 have we seen a female and male Aussie athlete respectively take the Gold. As always, the competition from a number

of elite international skiers from the US, France, Switzerland and Estonia will be aiming to take the prize money! In the week leading up to the race, there is always plenty on and a buzz that comes with the excitement of the largest snow sport event in the Southern Hemisphere . Check out http://www.fallscreek.com.au/event-search/ to see just how busy it is.My favourite event is held on Thursday 24th in the Village Bowl - The Invitational Night Sprint Races. The explosive speed of these athletes and their skill on those skinny skis is truly inspirational. It is a knock-out style event and there’s no shortage of physicality in the sprint to the line. Get out there and see this spectacle, then stick around for the fireworks in the Village Bowl as part of the night show spectacular.Falls Creek has produced many champions across all disciplines of snow sport and too many to mention here, but in the last few weeks many of the next generation have been doing the mountain proud. The Falls Creek Race Club sent the U14 and U16 teams off to Perisher with the team recording some terrific top 20 placings. With the Australian Children’s Championships heading to Falls Creek in September, fingers crossed home ground advantage sees some even better personal bests. The Falls Creek Primary School XC team also came back from Mt Buller with 2nd Place from the Interschools… missing the trophy by just 1 point! Again, up against competition and teams that dwarfed ours, the

David and Goliath struggle saw skill, tenacity and team spirit win through. The J-Nats at Mt Buller, Isabelle Bond, the only Falls Creek rep came 8th in the moguls comp - and our team from Mount Beauty Secondary College won the ASSSTC’s (hosted at Falls Creek) - great work guys. The plethora of XC events from the Junior Championships, to the Rocky Valley Rush have also seen tremendous performances from the local athletes too - again cementing Falls Creeks place as the home of cross country in Australia. Well done to all.Special mention to Falls Creek Ski Patrol team member, Pat Auderer who set the competition alight at the Wombats Rambler for 2017. His blistering pace produced a four second gap to second place. No wonder the Patrol crew have such quick response times! Now, on that note, with all this snow around, get out there and get some.Foodie Tip of the Week: BE Foodstore. We dropped in for a cheeky breakfast. The veggie super smoothie is a vitamin packed boost… and even tried the golden latte with almond milk - that makes it the healthiest breakfast around! Oh, and happy hour from 3:30pm ain’t bad either - the Chestnut Pilsner is my favourite! •Stuart Smythe, CEOFalls Creek Resort Management

    A Great Weekend!

The second weekend of August saw some keen skiers and some very excited (even if a touch nervous), first timers head to Falls Creek. The camp group was made up of Independence Australia clients/DWA members Hayden, Cory, Aaron, Gabi, Jess and Riley along with their carers Emma, Jai and Georgia. The weekend was a chance for many to step out of their comfort zones, meet new people and try new experiences.First timers to the snow, Hayden and Cory, said the sights were “amazing” and “awesome.” For other first-timers, both Emma and Jai could not get over the sheer vastness, texture and beauty of Falls Creek and the surrounding snow-capped peaks and Bogong High Plains.Day One saw chills and low visibility with the hanging clouds but this did not deter the group. Hayden took to sit-skiing like a duck to water, soon leaving his guides Tony and Sean behind. Cory fondly recounted his experiences of falling over in the snow multiple times before spending hours skiing circles around guides Geoff and Catherine. As the day wore on visibility improved and after lunch we were lucky enough to get the perfect opportunity for some amazing photos. Both Emma and Jai had a blast making snowballs and tripping over

themselves in the snow, with photographer Jiri capturing all the fun.Gabi enjoyed sit-skiing with guides Nikolas and Corinne, taking the scenic route through the mountain on the Village Run and passing the school and local chalets. Gabi told us her highlights were some backwards sit-skiing and 360° turns on Wombat’s Ramble.Aaron with the Double Dan guide team, laughingly recounted his runs down Wombat’s Ramble where other skiers moved out of his path to check his epic turns! The evening at Camp DWA Independence Australia had guides, participants and carers bonding over card games with the comfort of rocky road and chocolate brownies made for the team by the lovely Michelle Higgs. We love you!Day Two weather was similar to Day One - yet the poor visibility still was not a deterrent for the group to hit the snow.Jess could not stop laughing and smiling throughout the whole weekend. Her highlight was solo sit-skiing down Wombat’s Ramble - something she had been aiming to achieve since her visit to Falls Creek last year. Thanks Tim and Russell for being great guides for Jess.Riley claimed the highlight of his trip was the stack at the top of Summit, sliding down approx. 15m. Riley couldn’t wait to do more – and the smile could not be wiped from his face. Many thanks to

  • The Wombat’s Rambler Night Race

Finally… The Wombat’s Rambler Night Race had some good weather. On top of a night without heavy snowfall or wind, an earlier start and an earlier finish; 2017 Rambler was our most fun and our most successful event so far this season.Competitors this year were housed in the Junior Workshop rooms up the top while they waited to race, giving them somewhere warm and fun to hang out while they eagerly awaited their turns. We had tunes pumping, live timing and some positive team banter all night up there, making the atmosphere up top definitely the most enjoyable of any Rambler to date.In Stingray, we had two hot seats for the fastest skier and snowboarder which were also hotly contested for all night - the rivalry was strong this year between the teams with a few scores to settle after last year! The highlight of the night for us in the timing hut, was definitely the rivalry between Scotty Cairney and Travis Tait (the winners of fastest snowboarder the last few Ramblers) who were neck and neck for a very similar time to the finish - until Scotty missed the last gate, costing himself a 10 second penalty. Poor Scotty… maybe next year bud!The fastest skier went to Pat Auderer, much to the horror of some of our local legendary Austrian skiers, and fastest snowboarder

was awarded once again to the talented and overly waxed up Travis Tait. Well done guys, bragging rights are ALL YOURS!!Our fastest ski teams were a slather of Austrian pedigree (1st, 2nd and 3rd ski teams… 100% Austrian!) showing us that no-one really races like an Austrian does. Big congrats to “The Coaches” in 1st place, “Das A Team” in 2nd place and “Austrian Lederhosen Dirndl Gang” in 3rd! The skill in your teams was truly inspiring. Our fastest snowboard teams were the “Hawaiian Slippery Gypsys” in 1st place, “Shake n Bake” in 2nd place and “Mr Tait is a cheat” in 3rd! Well done everyone!! I must also submit an (insincere) apology for changing our 3rd fastest snowboard team’s name to “Mr Tait is the real MVP” for the comp…;)To everyone that competed, thanks for being a part of such a fun event!! Mr Wombat says enjoy spring, shred hard and we will see you again next year. Enjoy your $1000 winning teams (beers on the Austrians??)! •What’s coming up in Events? The events calendar is not slowing down yet! • Hits Falls Creek Slopes

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, the Australian Professional Snowsport Instructors (APSI) Demonstration Team hit the slopes at Falls Creek to train for Interski 2019 - a four-yearly, global conference for ski and snowboard instructors. Among the Australian team are three of our own Falls Creek ski instructors - Tom Langtry, Nick Rankin and Michaela Patton.Every four years, the top ski and snowboard instructors from around the world gather for the week-long Interski conference to share ideas about ski and snowboard technique, training and teaching. Considered the biggest event in the snowsports instruction industry, the next Interski will be hosted by Pamporovo, Bulgaria in March 2019. Interski often features a week of on-hill workshops, indoor presentations, and demonstrations that allow countries to showcase their ski and snowboard techniques to the world. The role of APSI Team members is to present and exchange ideas with representatives from various associations and alliances from other nations, and bring these ideas back to their members here in Australia. This week, Falls Creek Ski Lifts was kind enough to reserve a training space on Scott Chair for the team to work on high performance skiing, and to practise their formations for Interski. The best instructors from around Australia travelled to Falls Creek for these two days of training to workshop with the best instructors, trainers and examiners in the country, and shape the future of Australian snowsports teaching. This Australian Demonstration Team was selected in August last year at Falls Creek after two days of tryouts, and this week at Falls Creek was the Team’s first training

session of the season. The Team comprises eight alpine skiers, four snowboarders, two telemarkers, two cross-country skiers and for the first time, an adaptive sit-skier - and the coaches of their respective disciplines. Instructors were selected on the basis of industry knowledge, ski or snowboard performance, presentation skills, training skills and ability to ski as a team.To have three of eight alpine skiers is a huge achievement for Falls Creek, and is a reflection of the local talent that this mountain, and in particular our Snowsports School, produces. In addition to current team members Tom Langtry, Nick Rankin and Michaela Patton, past Falls Creek APSI Demonstration Team members include Mark “Macca” McDonald, Kerry Lee Dodd, Shelly Giles, Bobby Irwin, Ian Bruce and Daniel Wright. The Team will spend the next two and a half years training towards Interski, and then another year presenting the valuable findings back to their members in various resorts across Australia. The Falls Creek community is urged to follow the progress of the Demo Team, as each Interski conference influences how APSI instructors teach their guests, and the way new and returning skiers and snowboarders in Australia learn the sport that we all love. • Michaela Patton

  • CROSS COUNTRY NEWSCROSS COUNTRY NEWSCasey has “basically been focusing solely on skiing” since then and boy has it taken her places. Like a parent, XC has given Casey many valuable childhood experiences and even shown her the globe. When she was 16 she went to Royal Gorge in Colorado with the Victorian Ski Team and during the following years she travelled for racing purposes overseas in the Northern Hemisphere winter. In what is a great society to facilitate driven people, Casey’s hard work and commitment to the sport of skiing has taken her to some crazy places such as Val De Fiemme in Italy and Liberez in Czech Republic both for the World Junior Championships, Sapporo, Japan for Asian Games and even her now where she calls Alaska home! “Nordic Skiing has taken me to some pretty amazing places. The fact that I am currently living in Alaska is a perfect example.” says Casey. That’s right, after showing her the world and perhaps nurturing a person in Casey willing to seek adventure and passion, XC Skiing did something else quite remarkable. In 2015 Casey received an email from the Universtity of Alaska Anchorage declaring that she was offered a full athletic scholarship for skiing. She joined the XC Ski Team at the University and is also completing a degree where she will major in physical education with a minor in public health. This opportunity is so special as it is not easy at all to find a great combination of study and training and Casey admits “my skiing has improved a crazy amount.” Just like that, XC Skiing knows it’s important to have a career for after skiing and so has “paid” for Casey’s tertiary education! Next step is what? The future is brightOf course, Casey has come back to Falls Creek now, the site of her childhood upbringing, to prepare and train for a huge season starting in December. She plans to go to Europe and race early World Cups in Davos as well as US Nationals later on. Of course if she is fast enough, Olympics are on the cards and we wish her the best for the overseas adventures.

XC Skiing - A Parent Figure

Who gives you motivation when you grow up? Who takes you travelling and introduces you to new experiences? Who provides you an education – and an inviting home to always come back to? You’d think Mum or Dad right? Or, in some cases, Cross Country Skiing. This week I caught up with 22 year old Aussie XC Skier Casey Wright who has just come back to Falls Creek from the University of Alaska Anchorage. She will be competing at this weekend’s Australian National Championships and then at the Kangaroo Hoppet the following weekend.Nordic Skiing has taken me to some pretty amazing placesXC Skiing has been like a parent figure to Casey Wright in many ways. Casey grew up in the Yarra Valley, East of Melbourne. This area, if you’ve ever driven through it, is very green. A perfect place to nurture a sporty young lass. “I basically played every sport available to me as a kid. I grew up swimming and running competitively, playing soccer and touch rugby and of course snow sports,” says Casey. After she finished high school

But at the end of the day, amongst all this travel and chasing success in foreign and perhaps unsettling places, there is always a warm welcoming home here at Falls Creek. That’s often the best thing a loving parent can do. Rocky Valley Rush/Sun Valley RambleLast weekend was the Snow Trek and Travel Rocky Valley Rush. A tricky forecast meant soft and slow conditions. A large field of competitors shredded it out along the Sun Valley loop with a nice audience of skiers and snowboarders at Ruined Castle and Scott’s. It was sunny, fresh, and a little bit windy. Mark “Polski” Pollock skiid a brave race, leading the field for about 99% of the race managing to drop skiers behind him and then choose the finish lane instead of lap lane to then allow skiers to reattach themselves. Phil Bellingham took the gold in a final few metres burst. In the woman’s, French dame Iris Pessey won, easily. Just like she won seven national French titles. Congratulations to all competitors and I think we can all feel good about ourselves for getting in some quality Hoppet training. •Seve de Campo

    Kangaroo Hoppet History

First race: 1979, 21km, 80 participants, under the name of ‘Australian Birkebeiner.’Worldloppet membership: since 1991In 1977 a group of cross country skiers in Mount Beauty, decided to form a cross country ski club. Some of them had skied in Norway and taken part in the Birkebeiner Ski Race and thought that Birkebeiner would be a good name for their club. Two years later, in 1979, the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club decided to hold their own version of the famous Birkebeiner race and the 21km Australian Birkebeiner was held with some 80 participants, all carrying a 5kg pack. The course started and finished at the alpine ski village of Falls Creek, and took participants out into the wilderness area of the adjacent Bogong High Plains. With the gaining of Worldloppet accreditation in 1991, the longer distance of 42km was introduced and this being the Australian version of the Loppet - with Kangaroos hopping around, the name Kangaroo Hoppet was created and has stuck. The Birkebeiner event over 21km was retained and a family event, the 7km

Joey Hoppet was introduced. The Worldloppet series sees 135,000 skiers taking part globally each year in events spanning four continents, with races in: Austria, Italy, Germany, Japan, Canada, USA, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Norway, Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, China, Iceland, Argentina, New Zealand and Australia. •

  • KANGAROO HOPPETWELCOME TO KH 2017items are undertaken for what is the largest annual snow-sports event in the southern hemisphere. This group looks after everything from international logistics and compliance with international skiing rules to deciding what design to put on the t-shirt and what colour the bibs will be for the coming year (don’t under-estimate how important those items are!).Each year myself and the Race Director, Ben Derrick, attend the Worldloppet AGM that is hosted by one of the member countries in June. This year we were guests of the Chinese Vasaloppet in Changchun in northern China where we meet our colleagues from the other 19 Worldloppet events and worked through the various rules and commitments for the upcoming year. At the beginning of the ski season the Organising Committee begin to meet every few weeks to prepare for the event. The OC has 20 coordinators that are tasked with actually delivering the event on the day. This is everything from organising transport and logistics, car parking, safety, course grooming, setting up all of the infrastructure and even what food you will be served at the drink stations. There is so much effort put in by so many volunteers to stage the event and I take my beanie off to them all in the lead up to the event. But the event is all about creating a lifetime memory for all of our participants. Whether it is a beautifully sunny day or an inclement alpine storm, there will be some memories that

    From the Chairman

On behalf of the Organising Committee it is a great pleasure to welcome all the participants and supporters to Falls Creek for the 2017 Kangaroo Hoppet. We hope that you all enjoy the warm hospitality and vibrant atmosphere that the Hoppet manages to deliver to our skiing friends from around the world each year at Falls Creek. The day brings together people from many different and diverse nationalities and is often the culmination of considerable preparation for participants across all of the events. While most people just enjoy the atmosphere in the Nordic Bowl and around the course during the event, there is a lot of preparation and time that is undertaken by many people leading up to start and long after the last skier has packed up and enjoyed some evening refreshments. The Organising Committee meets in two separate forms throughout the year. A small group of six people meet weekly from January to work on promoting the event and make sure that all the background

you will keep for ever. I recall a friend who once competed in the American Birkebeiner on a bleak rainy and windy day in Wisconsin. Looking miserable while standing on the start line of the 55km event he noticed that the Czech competitor next to him was smiling. Why would you be smiling in such miserable conditions enquired my friend? Because, for the effort that you make today you will remember it for the rest of your life. That makes it such a valuable experience! I certainly hope we have perfect weather for the event, but if we can’t manage to organise that we will at least give you a safe and memorable experience. From the Organising Committee and communities of Falls Creek and Mount Beauty I wish you a safe and wonderful race in 2017. •Allan Marsland OAMChairman Kangaroo Hoppet Board

  • KANGAROO HOPPETInternational Night Sprints

As a lead up event to the Kangaroo Hoppet, the International Night Sprints were created to provide an opportunity for the die-hard downhillers staying in the village to have a look at some fast and furious Cross Country action. This skinny ski action takes place under lights at the bottom of the Summit, outside the Frying Pan Inn in the Village Bowl starting at around 6:45pm this coming Thursday 24th August. The event has now become something of a tradition, just like the 27th running of the Kangaroo Hoppet the Night Sprints support. The Night Sprints feature international athletes from Switzerland, France, Estonia and the USA who are in town for the Hoppet, and they will be competing against best of our Australian Team athletes, providing something of a preview of who is in form for the main event. You will also see a few of our up and coming local skiers as several of them who will be skiing the 21km on Saturday will also get a start in the Night Sprints.

The Night Sprints on Thursday evening are the ‘Fast & Furious’ element of cross country ski racing. While the Winter Olympic sprint distance is 1.5km - the Night Sprints are usually around 250m, starting and finishing at the base of the Summit run outside the Frying Pan Inn. By invitation only, the format involves a series of head to head knockout rounds beginning at approximately 6:45pm leading to men’s and women’s finals at around 7:45pm just in time for the fabulous Renault Summit Night Show Spectacular and Fireworks.Falls Creek Resort offers half price Resort Entry from 1pm to midnight (or free entry from 4pm), and the Gully Chairlift is open for free access up to the Village Bowl. • 20 cross-country ski races, the Kangaroo Hoppet attracts an increasing number of overseas skiers wanting to do something they love, in a new and different alpine landscape. What better way to see the world on skis and be welcomed in an atmosphere of personal challenge, family fun and camaraderie. It’s about making lifetime friends doing a great lifestyle sport,” Derrick said. With the unprecedented snow falls in early August the course is in immaculate condition as we lead up to the event. “It is not always that we have enough snow for the full course,” Derrick continued. “However, with the last dump, combined with some very astute grooming from our course preparation team, we are confident at this early stage that we will have the full 42km course that showcases the magnificent Bogong High Plains.”The course starts and finishes in the Falls Creek Nordic Bowl, with three loops extending out onto the Bogong High Plains and into the Alpine National Park: 42km Kangaroo Hoppet, 21km Australian Birkebeiner and 7km Joey Hoppet. Celebrating the Largest Annual Snowsports Event

Falls Creek will be a winter wonderland of cross country ski action on Saturday the 26th of August 2017, when the ski world comes together for the southern hemisphere’s largest annual snowsports event, the 27th Kangaroo Hoppet. In excess of 1,000 cross-country skiers from elite superstars to aspiring beginners and outdoor enthusiasts, will click into a pair of skinny skis and line up at the Hoppet Start in Falls Creek Nordic Bowl, alongside ski friends from 26 countries. In a big day of racing, the Hoppet offers a unique combination of top-level sporting competition and great family fun. Whether it takes two hours or six hours, the Kangaroo Hoppet provides a unique opportunity to ski the Bogong High Plains of Victoria’s Alpine National Park, on groomed trails.Race Director, Ben Derrick explained that the Kangaroo Hoppet brings together a worldwide family of ski friends.“Being part of the Worldloppet series of

skiers will test themselves against the world’s leading cross country skiers over 42km or that ‘friend’ who finished ahead of them last year, or perhaps try the less challenging 21km event that takes in the beauty of the Bogong High Plains. The event for all abilities is the family-friendly ‘Joey Hoppet’ which takes in a 7km loop around Sun Valley. Races are freestyle technique with classical tracks provided. While all eyes will be on the elite skiers leading the pack in the main event competing for podium places, for Australia’s aspiring future Olympians the eight AGL Energy in Action scholarships ($500) are also hotly contested. Awarded to the first male and female in the U18 and U14 in the 7km Joey Hoppet, first U23 in the 21km and to the first Australians in the 42km main event, it is no coincidence that all members of Australia’s last two Winter Olympic cross country teams are former AGL Scholarship winners . 2017 marks the tenth year of support by major sponsor AGL Energy, owner and operator of the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme and Australia’s largest retailer of renewable energy. For more details, visit: www.hoppet.com.au. •Who’s Who Up Front 2017 HoppetFor the lycra-clad super athletes in the field, 2017 shapes up as the closest event for many years. Three time winner and Swiss Olympic star, Valerio Leccardi is back with the aim to add one more record equalling win in the event. Last year’s winner Matt Gelso from the USA has flown in late to defend the title he fought hard for last year. Matt is back on track after a serious car accident a few months ago but is raring to put some form on the track against the other elite

However, the time is right for an Australian to take out the event for the first time since Ben Sim topped the podium in 2009, and locals reckon that we have just the man in Phil Bellingham, Sochi Olympian and runner up in 2015 and 2016. Phil has been back in Australia for some months since the last northern hemisphere season and is living and training up at Falls Creek. However, two Australian team mates will be looking to spoil that party with Paul Kovacs and Callum Watson showing very strong form in the lead up events. US skiers Miles Havlick and Jeremy Hecker could produce the surprise of the day. The 42km event always throws up some surprise results so look out for a number of up and coming elite athletes as they aim to establish themselves amongst the elite. Although the young guns had better watch out for old time superstars Anthony Evans and Cameron Morton who always manage to work themselves into the lead group. The elite women’s field is looking equally as even. Sochi Olympian Barbara Jezersek will be looking for her first win representing Australia as her new country of citizenship but will face tough opposition from seven time French national champion Iris Pessey. Pessey has been working and training at Falls Creek for the winter and has shown very strong form on the race circuit in 2017. Ski de Femme 2017

Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club’s annual Ski de Femme was held on Saturday 12th August at Falls Creek and was another great day. Around 100 women braved the misty, rainy conditions to have some fun, work on their technique, socialise and participate in a race. The snow was soft and the drizzle was coming down, but that didn’t stop the 100 or so women making their way to the home of cross country skiing, Falls Creek’s Nordic Bowl. They came from the Kiewa Valley, the Ovens, the Border and even from Melbourne and Canberra. They were lucky enough to get some tips from some of our best cross country athletes, including BNSC’s 2017 international coach Miles Havlick who became Milly for the day. Some of the other coaches who volunteered their time included National team members Katerina Paul and Casey Wright along with French national champion Iris Pessey. Also Linky Grimmer, Belinda Phillips, Freya Hik, Jules Smith, Kate Prest, Michelle Forrer, Ann Bellingham, Jeanette McLaren, Katrina Butler plus junior girls Acacia Benne-Keeble, Leila Pammer, India Zwar and Molly Ryan. Everyone returned from their coaching session feeling happy about getting a few skiing tips. Hot cups of tea were in order and Brazen Brownies were devoured. CLIF bars were popular and gave everyone an energy boost before the race. Due to the conditions, the races were limited to a 1km and a 2.5km race and it was great to see some first time skiers having a race. Meg Weatherman and Jenny Corsar were the lucky winners of the Falls Creek Resort entry season passes when it came to spot prizes. This year BNSC also awarded

This year the race is on the August 31 with course inspection starting from 8pm. Barry Iddles will be there providing some essential Kase Knocken at the start, spectators can hop in and out of the Frying Pan for food or drink and then the final hop around the bowl is to Be Foodstore for the presentation of the event at 9:30 pm.Competitors race one race only; the categories are Young Strudel under 35, Old

This brought to mind a memory of an earlier APSI trip to Interski at St Anton in1991 where our then Ski School Director Brad Spalding led the team. It was here announced that “Australian skiing has now come of age!”Your Ed rang Wild Brumby (outside Jindabyne) to talk with Brad about this fantastic Interski - only to find him ‘celebrating’ a birthday no less. Therefore Brad Spalding, happy birthday for Tuesday 15th and let’s trust there are many more Interski’s yet to visit. •CongratulationsNow we know that Falls Creek is a very romantic village - lots of snow covered trees and fresh snow to stroll around in - hold hands

  • High School joined the competition just for this day and provided very stiff competition for the local Mount Beauty team but Mount Beauty was able to win every cross country event of the day. The extra pre-season training provided by Nick Grimmer and Olympian Esther Bottomley paid off. By a nail biting 1 point Mount Beauty won the overall championship on 137 points. This is only the second time Mount Beauty have been able to take the trophy from Snowy Mountains Grammar in the past 15 years! The Mount Beauty Team consisted of Ayla Armitage, Acacia Benne-Keeble, Ella Gould, Charlotte Rookes, Brianna Oldis, Jonah Cosgriff, Tommi Silvester, Jack Rawlings, Rhys Cook, Cody Allport, Mitch Cook, Nic Blackwell, Claire Bowring, Ryan Blackwell, Charlie Ryder, Will Weir and Dylan Cosgriff helped out St Mary’s team from Kingaroy, the first Queensland team to participate in the event.Final Placings:Overall: 1st. For the Second Time

There is a buzz of anticipation and peer support as teams of students from 10 schools lined up for boarder cross, the opening event of the Australian Secondary Schools Snowsports Team Championships affectionately known as the ASSSTC. The ASSSTC is a unique team based competition where schools enter 16 students where most of the team has to compete in Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding and Cross Country events. The focus is on having a go at all the disciplines with times tallied and teams being rewarded for having as many of the team participate in each discipline as possible. The competition has been running for over 50 years. Day one saw beautiful sunshine and conditions for the skier cross and border cross events. Snowy Mountains Grammar (SMGS) led the results coming out winners across the boys, girls and reserve categories. After being evacuated from Ruined Castle midway through the giant slalom because of high winds, the Falls Creek Race and Events team jumped into action and setup another short and fast giant slalom course on Nastar. At the conclusion of the two days of downhill events Snowy Mountains Grammar School were 12 points ahead of second place locals Mount Beauty Secondary College. The third day is all about cross country skiing with both classic and freestyle events. The Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club set a perfect course, achievable for all competitors but allowed the most talented to show off their skills. Wangaratta

  • What A Week

The Falls Creek Historical Society along with Falls Creek Resort Management and the Falls Creek Ski Lift Company celebrated Seven decades of Alpine Life last week. Public events were well attended and the image of the village was spread far and wide courtesy of social media and the wonderful images of Chris and Finn. Our week started with a re-creation of the walk from Howman’s Gap. In knee high fresh powder, Rob Jones set out into the bush, fully clothed by the families of the Skyline Lodge, our first Lodge in Falls Creek back in 1947. It certainly made him appreciate modern day clothing and the protective fabrics of today. The 50’s saw us host a photo slideshow and accompanying 50’s tunes in the bowl at the weekly Street Party whilst children and adults alike got to purchase a lovely cup cake from our Bake Sale. The 60’s saw another recreation. Thanks must go to Astra Lodge for allowing us to use their beautiful fireplace and to their talented bar person for making the most popular cocktail of the 60’s, the Bloody Mary. Margy was just perfect as our beautiful 60’s model in clothing

again provided straight from the 1964 wardrobe of one of our museum supporters. The 70’s saw fireworks and 70’s tunes at the Thursday night fireworks accompanying the spectacular ski show put on by Ski Lifts. We brought our retro colours out on Friday night at The Man Hotel for a night of 80’s One Hit Wonders and danced the night away. It was fantastic to see so many dress the part, with lots of crimped hair, shoulder pads and fishnet gloves. Thanks to the crew at The Man for dressing up, providing some door prizes, bringing out the smoke machine and belting out the 80’s tunes. The funny part of that evening was the poor DJ who was not even born in the 80’s. Great effort!A sell-out crowd at Elk Restaurant celebrated the 90’s. Apparently there were lots of ‘Aaaah’ moments throughout the evening as we took people down memory lane. Congratulations must go the ‘Thorn and Roses’ who narrowly took out the victory by 1 point and will enjoy a dinner at Elk as first prize. Thank you to Barry and his staff for providing a great venue and to the 100 guests who made it a most enjoyable and successful night.Earlier that day we played host to some very special guests. Meyer along with Peter and Phyl Crawford and David Crooke joined us for afternoon tea to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Skyline. John’s father Ray and Phyl’s father Jack Minogue were two of the original SEC six who built the lodge. John and Phyl both recalled some fun memories of their childhood at Falls Creek and have provided us with some fabulous photographs that the museum will collate, catalogue and cherish. Many thanks to Foodworks, Snonuts and Pretty Valley for providing refreshments and to Sam Ruthven, for creating an amazing cake for the occasion. We now look to the next 70 years. May Falls Creek be filled with joyous times, the pioneering spirit of its forbearers and lots and lots of snow in the winters. Thank you everyone for making this week a spectacular event. •

  • LARGER THAN LIFEAnthony Bartl

Last Monday a number of people, and the spirit Falls Creek, were touched by the visit of a very inspiring man - Anthony Bartl. Ant’s life was changed forever 31 years ago when as a six year old he was hit by a car and sustained a C1 spinal cord injury. “C1?” you may ask, well check out your handy human anatomy book and you’ll see that is as high in the spine as you can get… the most severe of spinal cord injuries. Anth has not let his severe disability stop him leading as full and adventurous life as possible, and on Monday this continued with him visiting Falls Creek and skiing for the first time.Arriving at Howman’s Gap Alpine Centre on Sunday afternoon, Anth was thrilled by the amount of snow that the previous weekend’s #snowymcsnowface storm had delivered, but this was just an entrée to what he was going to experience the next day. The mountain gods shined on Anth and Monday greeted us with a great cover of snow in the resort, blue skies and mild temperatures, perfect for a visit by somebody who has no temperature sensation or thermal control in their body.

His first experience staying at altitude meant that Anth didn’t have a great night, struggling to keep oxygen levels up in his body but there was no way this was going to stop this huge spirited man.As the day progressed for Anth, his team and those of us that were going to help him achieve his skiing dream, we were presented with plenty of challenges. There were probably a list of reasons for his ski day not to go ahead, but there was one overriding reason why every challenge was overcome… Anth himself. With everything in place and Anth secured in a ‘high support’ sit ski we loaded Halley’s Chair for our ride to the top. Once up the top it was a skate past Cloud 9 and we were on our way down Wombat’s Ramble for Anth’s first experience of snow skiing. The sensation of the wind in his

“Don’t hold Back!” is Anthony Bartl’s motto - and he went for it with the help of his minders and DWA support Peter Hull and Jim Gargan. Pic - Chris Hocking. The story made most major TV channels on Wednesday evening.

face had him hooting and hollering all the way down. At the bottom of the run it was a quick check over from his support team, some pumps from an external bag ventilator to get his oxygen levels up and we were loading the lift again for another run down ‘the Ramble’. Chris Hocking captured his elation perfectly when we got to the bottom of his second run, check his inspiring video out on the Falls Creek Facebook page.DWA, Anthony and his support crew would like to acknowledge and thank Howman’s Gap Alpine Centre, Falls Creek Ski Lifts, Falls Creek Ski Patrol and QT Falls Creek for their great help and support in making Anth’s dream of skiing come true. To quote Anth, “…don’t hold back, just go for it”. • Peter Hull
