A2 Buncrana Road Public Information Exhibition INTRODUCTION The Buncrana Road is located in the north west of the city of Derry/ Londonderry and runs in a north westerly direction from Pennyburn Roundabout, where the Strand Road meets with the Culmore Road, to the Border with the Republic of Ireland. Sections of the Buncrana Road carry in excess of 24,000 vehicles per day 2-way, with hourly peaks in excess of 1770 vehicles*. With traffic levels continuing to grow and future developments proposed along the route, traffic congestion will increase and road safety would be expected to deteriorate. The Stage 1 (Corridor Option) Assessment was concluded in September 2007 by Faber Maunsell. It was recommended that three corridor options be taken forward into the Stage 2 Assessment between Pennyburn Roundabout and Skeoge Roundabout and that one corridor option be taken forward for consideration between Skeoge Roundabout and the Border. *Figures based on 2017 survey.

LEGEND

The Stage 2 Assessment developed a range of route options within the preferred Stage 1 corridor based on engineering and environmental constraints. Each of the route options were assessed against the Government’s five overarching objectives for transport:

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT (WHAT IS CHANGING AND WHAT IS STAYING THE SAME)

Given the time that has passed since the Preferred Route Announcement in 2009, in 2017 Arup were tasked with reviewing the Stage 2 Scheme Assessment and updating the design.

DESIGN IN 2009

DESIGNIN 2018

Full on-line widening to 4 lane dual carriageway standard from Pennyburn Roundabout to Elagh Junction

Central median installed in the urban section between Pennyburn Roundabout and Skeoge Roundabout

Central reserve installed in the rural section between Skeoge Roundabout and Elagh Junction

Improvements to Pennyburn Roundabout

Roundabout at Racecourse Road

Roundabout at Springtown Road

Roundabout at Branch Road

Properties at the southern side of Buncrana Road at Collon Terrace required to accommodate the widening

Left in / Left out access proposed for minor accesses

Integration of North West Greenways and Templemore Sports Complex Redevelopment

Restriction of right turning movements into and out of local accesses will reduce congestion,

improve journey time reliability and improve safety.

New roundabout at Springtown Road will provide access to

all-movement junction for local residents, St Columb’s School and

retail units.

New roundabout at Racecourse Road will provide access to all-

movement junction for traffic with controlled crossing points for

pedestrians and cyclists.

Pennyburn Roundabout upgrade to manage traffic onto Culmore Road,

Strand Road and Fort George Development.

Restriction of right turning movements into and out of local accesses will reduce congestion,

improve journey time reliability and improve safety.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (EIA)

VISUALISATION

Environmental Assessment will be undertaken to determine impacts on the local environment and appropriate mitigation measures will be incorporated into the design. These measures are likely to include landscaping, streetscape and ecology.
