AUTUMN 2014 The winners of the 2013 Australia’s Best Car Awards have been announced. The awards, conducted by the Australian Automobile Association, NRMA and state-based automobile clubs, assessed cars in 15 different categories against three key criteria:・value for money ・design and function・on the road performance

Of the 15 award categories, one car is awarded the Judges’ Choice. To be considered the car must have a high safety score, low fuel consumption, rate above average for vehicle efficiency, and be priced below the luxury threshold.

LEANING INTO CORNERSMercedes Benz unveiled its new S-Class Coupé at the Geneva International Motor Show in March. The luxury car is the first to have an optional ‘Magic Body Control’ feature. The feature can be compared to the way a motorcyclist leans into corners. The intention is to create a more comfortable and stable experience for passengers by reducing the lateral acceleration when turning corners. A windscreen camera detects road curves as the vehicle approaches them and feeds this data into the cars computer system. The Coupé is set to be available at dealerships in the second half of this year.

A recent study has found that Australians prefer conservative coloured cars. White cars were the most popular with new car buyers followed by grey, silver and black.

A separate study conducted by the Monash University Accident Research Centre found that as well as being the most popular choice, white is the safest coloured car on our roads. The study also found that there is a 12 per cent higher risk of being involved in crash in a black car than a white one. Grey and silver follow with 11 and 10 per cent higher crash risks, with red, blue and maroon coloured cars at 7 per cent.

However, the retreat of three major car manufacturers from Australian-based production is not all bad news according to leading economists. Sydney Morning Herald economics editor, Ross Gittins, said Australia’s declining manufacturing industry was partially due to the rise of industries such as mining and services.

Gittins dismissed claims that imported cars created less job opportunities in Australia. He said that the price difference between the cost of a car when it arrives in Australia and the cost at which it is sold goes towards creating jobs for Australian workers. This covers all jobs in the car-distribution industry that are involved in the process of taking imported cars from arrival to their sale. Toyota Australia President and CEO, Max Yasuda, said that support services will be available to minimise the impact on their employees and suppliers.

“Our focus will now be to work with our stakeholders as we transition to a national sales and distribution company,” he said.

According to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), Toyota took out January’s second and third highest selling car position for Corolla and Hilux respectively. The Mazda3 took out top spot, selling 4,561 vehicles. The FCAI confirmed Toyota was the month’s highest selling brand, with 13,646 sales. Mazda followed with 9,411 sales, then Holden with 8,871 sales across the month.

CAR MAKERS GO ABROADIn February 2014, Toyota made the announcement that it would cease car manufacturing in Australia from 2017, following in the tracks of Ford and Holden. Currently, Toyota produces the Camry, Camry Hybrid and the Aurion at the Altona manufacturing plant in Victoria. Approximately two thirds of Toyota’s Australian produced cars are exported for overseas customers.
