What is Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) ?
July 15, 2013
GIS is a type of switchgear having usual components of a substation (e.g. busbars, disconnectors, circuit-breakers, earthing switches, instrument transformers, surge arrester) arranged in metal enclosure and insulated with Gas (SF6) at high pressure.
Equipment are segregated into sufficient independent gas zones to allow the required degree of operational flexibility.

ABB| Slide 18
Circuit Breaker Operating Mechanism
Energy storage:
Disk spring: Single spring package stores the energy for multiple close/open operations
Energy transmission:
Hydraulic: Smooth damping of the breaker, integrated in the hydraulic system
In the unlikely event of rupture of one disc within the stack of springs only approx. 8% of the stored energy will be lost.
Even with three broken springs (Material failure), safe open -Operation is possible.

Integrated GIS ApplicationsCustomer success story City of Anchorage, Alaska
The customer had growing demand for power and required substation to be modest, as the project was in close proximity to a shopping center.
ABB responded by providing an ELK-04 / 145 kV fully integrated GIS substation that was installed and energized in a few weeks.
The substation consists of a 4-breaker ring integrated into two 40-foot containers.
The local control cubicles are also fully integrated inside the containers.

GIS Technology & ApplicationsOptimal & efficient use of resources
GIS is a mature technology and offers immense flexibility and benefits to the users.
All products in the market are not same.
Service continuity needs careful evaluation.
New generation of switchgear are compact , environmentally friendly and provide lower infrastructure costs across the whole value chain.
Ideal for pre-fabricated , pre-tested substation in factory
Is fully realiasable with the compact generation of switchgear & further enhances the benefits of GIS
