Businessman fights civil forfeitureVikki HOPESAbbotsford News

An Abbotsford restaurant owner whose home and property have become the subject of a civil forfeiture claim said he will fight the matter in court.

Mario Facchin said he and his wife, Elena, were not involved in the mari-juana grow operation that was discov-ered by police in a barn on their 4.4-acre property in April and, therefore, they did not profit from the proceeds of crime.

Civil forfeiture involves the govern-ment applying to court to obtain prop-erty it claims was used for, or benefited from, criminal activity.

If a judge decides a property must be forfeited, it can then be sold and the proceeds used for victim compensa-tion, crime prevention activities and other matters.

“I just want people to know that

I’m not a grower,” said Facchin, the owner of the Rendezvous Restaurant on Mt. Lehman Road. (The business has no connection to the Rendezvous Restaurant on Immel Street.)

The couple purchased the Huntingdon Road property in November 2007 for $1.25 million. Facchin said they made the purchase using money from the sale of their former home as well as their previous establishment, Crossroads Restaurant on Sumas Way which he ran for 30 years.

Facchin said he wanted a larger prop-erty to start a pre-fabricated home business, which later folded due to the economic downturn.

The property had two homes – one which the Facchins lived in, and anoth-er which they rented out, along with a barn.

Abbotsford Police busted the prop-erty on April 1, 2011 and seized 600 marijuana plants and growing equip-

ment from the barn.Facchin was at work at the time and

was alerted by a phone call from police that he should return to his property. He was arrested on scene when he arrived, and was later released.

Another man was also arrested and released. No charges have yet been laid in the case.

The civil forfeiture claim was filed last Friday, and Facchin said he did not know about it until reading an article in The News on Tuesday.

He had put his house on the market – listed for $1.65 million – about two weeks ago because he no longer needs it for the pre-fab business.

Facchin said it is unfair that the gov-ernment is trying to take his property, and he is worried that the situation has damaged his reputation as a moral, upstanding businessman.

“I work very hard in this town,” he said.

Elderly diverted from hospitalsJeff NagelBlack Press

Fraser Health is stepping up efforts to steer seniors away from costly hos-pital or long-term care beds if they can be supported and treated in their own homes.

The health authority has hired five quick response case managers – based at Abbotsford Regional, Royal Columbian, Surrey Memorial, Burnaby and Peace Arch hospitals – to work with geriatric nurses to flag incoming patients at ERs who can instead be sent home with bolstered supports.

That’s one of a series of initiatives underway collectively dubbed “Home is Right” – a broad effort to change the mindset of hospital officials, health care workers and families.

“Home with appropriate supports – not hospital, not residential care – is the best place for seniors to manage their chronic conditions and live out their final days,” says Lynda Foley, Fraser Health’s executive director of home health and end of life care.

Most seniors prefer to stay in their own homes, with their pets, belongings and family.

They have what they need, can be more active and social, and they avoid the risks of hospital-borne infections.

Parked in a wheelchair or stretcher in hospital, they can quickly lose muscle strength and typically take longer to recover.

And hospitals will simply hit a break-ing point as the demographic bulge of seniors grows if the chronically ill elderly continue to be primarily handled by the acute care system.

“We know that tsunami is coming at us,” Foley said. “If we don’t change the system, we’re not going to be able to

sustain it into the future.”The trick is to deliver needed sup-

ports into homes.Foley said that strategic shift is under-

way and has been gaining momentum since January, when Fraser Health for-mally set home care as the first option to be considered for elderly patients who no longer need a hospital bed.

She gives the example of an 85-year-old man who arrives at hospital with symptoms from his end-stage heart disease.

He might not be admitted but instead diverted from the ER back home where whatever care is needed can be arranged.

The quick response care manager who made that decision would actu-ally accompany him home, check his

medications, assess the situation and arrange follow up care by a family doctor, geriatrician and other support staff – coordinated by a community case manager.

Other patients who must be admitted to hospital because of more serious symptoms can be stabilized and then shifted more quickly back to home if the necessary supports are there.

The region has already increased home support service by 11 per cent over the past year, to 169,000 hours a month.

The region is hiring more home support workers, who can help with grooming, bathing and managing med-ications. Physiotherapists, nurses and other professionals can be dispatched to the home.

Teacher guilty

Vikki HOPESAbbotsford News

An Abbotsford religion teach-er was found guilty Wednesday in New Westminster Supreme Court of sending suggestive text messages to a female stu-dent in January 2009.

Martin Careen, 51, was con-victed of invitation to sexual touching (sexual exploitation). A previous charge of commu-nicating via a computer to lure a child was stayed in January.

Sentencing will take place at a later date, not yet sched-uled.

Careen was a teacher at St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary – a private Catholic school – when he had a text conversation with a 17-year-old student in the late evening and early morning of Jan. 27 and 28, 2009.

At first, the texts addressed an upcoming history exam and other school work, but they became sexual in nature.

Justice Terrence Schultes, in his reasons for judgment, read a series of the messages.

“Can you crawl through my window? I will do whatever you want,” Careen wrote in one.

In another, Careen described

how he wanted their encoun-ter to transpire: “I want it to be first-class – first-class hotel, champagne and good sex.”

Schultes acknowledged that the student participated in the conversation and exhib-ited her own “inappropriate behaviour,” but Careen was much older and in a position of trust.

Careen previously testified that he usually left his cell-phone on the kitchen table to

charge during the evening, and others – including his two teenage sons – had access to the device.

A 30-page transcript of text messages sent from and received on his cellphone was presented during the trial, which began last September and had numerous delays in the proceedings.

Careen denied sending any

No change in crash survivors’ conditionsVikki HOPESAbbotsford News

The condition of two young men involved in a head-on col-lision with a Chilliwack RCMP cruiser Tuesday night in Agassiz had not improved yes-terday as of press deadline.

The 20-year-old driver, iden-tified as Steve Genberg of Mission, was in critical con-dition in hospital. Genberg is a graduate of Mission Secondary and an employee of Mission Towing, according to his Facebook page.

The 19-year-old passenger, who has not yet been identi-fied, was in serious condition.

Abbotsford Police’s major crime unit has taken over

the investigation. Const. Ian MacDonald said reports that the police car did not have on its emergency lights at the time of the crash have not been con-firmed.

“We still have to sort out exactly what hap-pened, and it has to be based on fact,” he said.

He said the Ford Mustang driven by Genberg was at the front of a convoy of about five vehicles. They were headed to Harrison Hot Springs on

Lougheed Highway near Bodnar Road at about 11 p.m., when the Mustang and the marked police car collided head-on.

MacDonald said the officer was en route to assist with a report of a disturbance in Agassiz. He was treated in hospital and released.

The two young men were airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

MacDonald said alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

He said any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police are asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225.

Martin Careen (middle) of Abbotsford leaves B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster with his wife Sandra and lawyer Joe Doyle.

of the suggestive messages, but did admit to being the author of other texts to the complain-ant and to different students.

Schultes said he found it “implausible” that someone else would have sent the suggestive messages. He said all the texts accessed on Careen’s phone had similar patterns – such as “routinely, almost universally” ending in excla-mation marks and using the phrase “ha ha.”

They also used a “common paternal tone” that likely would not be easily mimicked by someone else, he said.

Schultes also referenced texts on Jan. 29 in which the student questioned Careen about the suggestive notes sent the day before, and Careen responded that he did not know what she was talking about.

These denial texts were merely a “sober second thought” to cover his own improper behaviour, Schultes said.

Careen was suspended without pay from his teaching position when the charges were laid in July 2009.

Doug Lauson, superintendent of the Catholic Independent Schools of Vancouver Archdiocese (CISVA), said CISVA took some criticism for the decision at the time because Careen was a popular teacher, but the priority was “ensuring the safety of children.”

Following his conviction, Careen will no lon-ger be permitted to work in the Catholic school system, Lauson said.

He said the case has been difficult for the Catholic and school community.

“It’s very tough ... when something like this happens because it’s just not expected.”

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

LAST WEEK, WE ASKED:

Is it appropriate forteachers to be texting

their students?

Do you think driversare becoming

less courteous?

To answer, go to abbynews.com

175 RESPONDED:

It’s more than just the end of the World

If media reports are to be believed – and, trust me, that’s a momentous qualifi er – the death this week of a long-viable newspaper was a direct result of journalistic corruption.

But perhaps after our collective attention is diverted to the United King-dom to witness the stench of scandal surrounding a not-soon-forgotten fi sh wrap, we’ll one day realize the decay suffered the world of journalism over, and not just because of sleaze and hubris.

News of the World ceased to be last weekend, after 168 years of reporting equal amounts of muck and rake in London. What began as an inexpensive, working-class broadsheet in 1843 ended Sunday – at the behest of Aussie media-emperor Rupert Murdoch – as one of the trashiest, if not cheapest, tabloids.

Owner of various newspapers, TV

stations and fi lm conglomerates on three continents, Murdoch slyly and swiftly announced the end of the World last week, as a political fi restorm swept the U.K. with revelations that his so-called journalists hacked the voicemail of a missing teenager, who was later found to have been murdered.

For years, it’s been known the phones and computers of politicians, athletes, royals and other celebrities have been hacked for news articles. But when it became apparent victims of crime were even further victimized, it became all too much for Murdoch’s discerning readership? Right…

Now, the scandal is threatening to implicate not only the staff and management of the World and other publications, but government and police offi cials as well. Talk about a right kerfuffl e.

However, to those who believe Mur-doch’s decision to cease publication was anything other than a premedi-tated, methodical fi nancial decision, perhaps you shouldn’t believe every-thing you read.

Journalism is in a state of fl ux. The Internet, the economy and public

awareness all play a role. While many have written in recent

years that print news is dying, it should be noted that TV and radio news are also suffering – greatly.

In an attempt to retain their audi-ences with tighter budgets and more

restrictive staffi ng, many news publica-tions and broadcasters have reinvented themselves in the way they report what they purport to be news. Some opt for sleaze, others pander to potential advertisers and a great number choose to entertain rather than inform.

Some take up precious news space and time to inform their readers or

viewers just how venerable and viable they truly are.

Others editorialize with impunity (sometimes because of personal bias; nearly always because of profi t). And a great many ignore the world around them while focusing on whatever socialor sporting event happens to make news easy to gather – all under the sem-blance of simply reporting what their audience wants.

I have to wonder just how much is gained in this evolution – and how much is lost.

Is there a solution? Absolutely. And for anybody with access to the Inter-net, it’s at your fi ngertips. I suggest maintaining your own quality control on your news sources. Read from an increasing variety of sources. And readoften. And when you fi nd a source that appears to be objective and informative, embrace it. If you think you’re being misled or you’re wasting your time, move on to the next source.

There’s good news out there. It’s your job to fi nd it.

But don’t take my word for it.Lance Peverley is editor of the Peace

To the ministry: enough bs all ready! You KNOW you should have provided this father with in home help FIRST! It would have cost less too. He loves his kids, there was NO evidence of abuse.

Would it not make more sense (and be less work and more economical) to simply try to provide Dad with a bit more help with the children? A single dad with 3 children, 2 of whom are autistic certainly can use some HELP.

I can’t believe she is still not home. This just breaks my heart it is just WRONG that the gov’t can decide, based on their own opinion, with no evidence that she should be removed from his care. Obviously it is detrimental to her. Their actions are not helping her at all. Give Ayn back to her father!

Two fresh starts in one dayOn July 10, 2011 clergy of the Anglican

Network in Canada (ANiC) who since May 2008 had been occupying the Anglican Church of Canada building on Guilford Drive in Abbotsford left that building to conduct wor-ship in Grace Church a few blocks away.

Worshippers who support those ANiC clergy also left the Anglican Church of Canada build-ing to worship with those clergy.

The formal name of the Anglican Church of Canada parish in our city is The Parish of St. Matthew, Abbotsford. This Anglican Church of Canada parish is the owner of the building on Guilford Drive. So the courts have confirmed.

For the 27 months of May 2008 to August 2010, ANiC excluded The Parish of St. Matthew, Abbotsford from using its own building.

On Aug. 29, 2010 ANiC relented, and allowed Anglican Church of Canada worshippers to use the parish hall for two hours on Sunday mornings. On 45 Sundays since then, Anglican Church of Canada Anglicans have worshipped in the parish hall of the building owned by the Anglican Church of Canada parish.

Now that the ANiC clergy and their followers have left that Anglican Church of Canada building, Anglican Church of Canada wor-shippers will be able to emerge from the parish hall to resume worship in the normal worship space in the building.

The Parish of St. Matthew, Abbotsford will be able to offer ministry for more than two hours per week.

Rev. Allen Doerksen, an Anglican Church of Canada priest raised in Abbotsford who has returned to our city, is now on the job on a per-manent full-time basis. He and the parishio-ners of The Parish of St. Matthew, Abbotsford,

with resumed full use of the Anglcan Church of Canada building on Guilford Drive, are now offering Sunday 10 a.m. Anglican worship and ministry to all residents of our city.

On July 10, 2011 The Parish of St. Matthew, Abbotsford did not move to another build-ing. What happened on July 10, 2011 is that ANiC clergy and their supporters moved to Grace Church, there to get a fresh start on their important and valuable ANiC ministry.

And what also happened on July 10, 2011 is that The Parish of St. Matthew, Abbotsford, with resumed use of the whole of its building, got a fresh start on offering Anglican Church of Canada worship and ministry in our city. Two fresh starts on one day. We rejoice.

Alleged UN Gang member

handed 60 daysVikki HOPESAbbotsford News

A man who was charged in March followingthe Abbotsford Police Department’s first bustusing the new armoured rescue vehicle hasbeen sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Chadwyn Marcus Weber, 32, pleaded guiltyMonday in Abbotsford provincial court to pos-session for the purpose of trafficking. In addi-tion to his jail sentence, he was given a lifetimefirearms prohibition.

Police busted an apartment in the 30500 blockof Blueridge Drive on March 10 and found threepeople in the unit, including Weber. Policeseized crack and powdered cocaine, cash andtwo bulletproof vests.

Weber has been in prison since his arrest. At the time, police alleged that Weber was

connected to the UN Gang. He had previouslyserved time in prison for assault and possess-ing a firearm without a licence, according tothe provincial court database.

The BearCat G3 armoured rescue vehiclewas purchased by the Municipal IntegratedEmergency Response Team (MIERT) and isused by the team in any of the four cities itcovers – Abbotsford, Delta, Port Moody andNew Westminster.

The vehicle is based in Abbotsford, whichpaid about 40 per cent of the $322,000 purchaseprice.

MIERT, which consists of officers from thefour detachments, is deployed when officer andpublic safety is a concern during an incidentthat could involve weapons or other high-risksituations.

No light on WhatcomKevin MILLSAbbotsford News

An amber flashing light will not be installed on Whatcom Road.

On Monday, council reversed its earlier decision, in April, to install the war-ning light on the southbound “ i n t e r s e c t i o n ahead” sign just before Mountain Drive.

Residents in the area had petitioned coun-cil to put in a stop light at the intersection due to safety concerns and limited visibility for motorists attemp-ting to turn onto Whatcom.

At that time, coun-cil rejected the stop light proposal. The amber flashing light was suggested as a compromise.

Monday’s decision to cancel the flashing light came after the city’s Traffic Safety Advisory Committee suggested it be put on hold until 2012, when a full review of the Whatcom Road cor-ridor is scheduled to

take place.The com-

mittee sug-gested that i n s t a l l i n g the amber beacon now could be r e d u n d a n t if new traf-fic lights a n d / o r

pedestrian crossings are needed next year. It would cost between $3,000 to $5,000 to install.

Abbotsford Coun. Dave Loewen was the only person to vote against the idea.

“What has changed that I should change

my mind on this?” Loewen asked staff.

He said the council “went against staff ” when it first decided to put up a warning light and now that decision is being reversed.

“Wouldn’t it make it a safer intersection? ... Maybe not signifi-cantly safer, but safer none-the-less,” said Loewen.

Russ Mammel, director of trans-portation, said the intersection was safe, but added they are always looking to make improvements.

Abbotsford Mayor George Peary said the Abbotsford Police Department has “this thoroughfare on its radar,” and is wat-ching for speeders heading down the hill. Speed is one of the main safety con-cerns on Whatcom.

1. “My good friend (or husband) tried to do it.” My apologies to the guys reading this, but it’s true. A big part of our business is fi nishing up the electrical projects you start . . . from outlets to ceiling fans. And that’s okay, although it would be easier and probably cheaper if you’d call us fi rst. We have the tools, experience and know-how to do the job right, start to fi nish. Call us for proven professional electrical expertise.

2. “I need a ceiling fan or chandelier installed.” We install lighting fi xtures, fans, outlets, dimmers and more. Our work is guaranteed to meet city codes, and we use only copper wiring (no aluminum). Want to know why we use only copper wiring? Call us.

3. “I have a breaker that doesn’t stay reset.” If your breaker keeps tripping, you don’t have the equivalent of a fl ooded basement, yet. But, you do have a potentially dangerous problem involving the electrical circuits in your home. Don’t ignore it. Call us!

4. “I’ve got an ugly internet or cable TV wiring stapled to my baseboards.” Let us do the job right. Snaking wire through walls is an art, a science, a skill . . . and our specialty. It’s also something few electricians, cable companies or internet providers like to do. But you’re in luck when you call us. We’re World Champions at snaking wire without knocking holes in your walls.

5. “Smells like something’s burning” Overheated appliances and electrical circuits are a problem you don’t want to ignore. A call to us now could save you a call to 911 later.

6. “We’ve got a ‘mystery switch’.” We love getting this call. If you’ve got a switch that you’ve never been able to link to an outlet or circuit, call us to solve the mystery.

How to choose the Right Electricianif you have any of these 6 problems and you want them fi xed today!

Unlike the plumbers I know, electricians rarely get emergency calls. Our equivalent of a fl ood in the basement is a fi re in the attic . . . and you don’t call us for that. You call 911.So you’re probably not reading this because you’ve got an electrical emergency. Instead, you have an electrical problem like one of these . . .

Fraser Riverwaters risingAshley WRAYAbbotsford News

As the water rises in the Fraser River, Abbotsford isn’t antici-

pating a serious flood.The Abbotsford

Police Department has posted a notice on its website assur-ing residents that

while the water levels are currently above average in the lower Fraser Valley, “there is no threat to the com-munity.”

“City staff is continu-ing to monitor weatherand river conditionsalong with conductingdaily dike patrols untilthe potential flood risksubsides,” said the sta-tement.

Rain is expected tokeep the Fraser Riverat a high level, peakingThursday and thendropping through theweekend.

The statement addedthat localized floodingto properties outsideof the dike systemmay occur.

So far, Matsqui TrailRegional Park, locatedalong the dike, hasexperienced flooding.

In 2007, the city ofAbbotsford spent $4.5million out of its reser-ves to raise dikes, ontop of $4 million thatthe provincial govern-ment offered for floodprotection.

In neighbouringMission, Fire/RescueService Chief IanFitzpatrick, who alsodoubles as the localemergency prepared-ness co-ordinator, saidthere is “no immediateconcern given the riveris expected to rise to6.04 metres [Thursday]morning.”

At that level, thewater is not likely tospill over the naturalbanks.

A renovation project to move the archives and open up the re-ception area has been approved by council.

food or alcohol may be served in the gallery when a “Class A” ex-hibit is being shown. That limited recep-tion space to the small front foyer.

Suzanne Greening, executive director of the Reach told coun-cil corporate rentals had gone down since the food and alcohol

restriction was put in place. That represents a loss of income for the Reach.

The renovation is merely a small step in a 10-year plan that Greening shared with council.

She is proposing the possible expansion of the gallery to include a black box theatre, larger archives, sup-ports rooms and even a restaurant and gift shop.

Greening said more than 52,000 visitors have gone through the Reach since it opened in September of 2008.

With three years experience behind it, Greening said it was time to look at the fu-ture of the facility.

Renovation will open up reception area

Suzanne Greening, of The Reach, addressed council on Monday.

Court cases at riskJeff NAGELBlack Press

More than half of all B.C. provin-cial court cases have been stuck in the system for at least a year and a growing number are at risk of being thrown out as a result.

Those are among the findings of a new update to the B.C. Provincial Court’s Justice Delayed report, which originally warned of serious delays in the system last fall.

The update shows there were 2,371 adult criminal cases before the courts for more than 18 months as of March 31 – a 16 per cent increase from 2,038 a year earlier.

Criminal cases 12 to 18 months old climbed 18 per cent over the same period from 4,856 to 5,744.

Judges are bound by Supreme Court of Canada rulings on how long cases can drag on and trials are being quashed over unacceptable delays of as little as 14 months.

The average delay across B.C. for a two-day criminal trial in March was 10.6 months, slightly worse than nine months earlier, although the stats improved in the

waits for child protection hear-ings, small claims trials and fam-ily law trials.

Surrey remains the worst for adultcriminal cases, with a 16-month waitfor a two-day trial. Fort St. John,Chilliwack, Terrace, Vancouver(Main Street), Kelowna and Vernonwere all booking two-day criminaltrials at least 13 months away.

The longest delays for child pro-tection hearings (13 to 15 months)were in Cranbrook, Abbotsford,Chilliwack and Terrace, whiledelays of 14 to 15 months were beingrecorded for family trials in Fort St.John, Cranbrook, Abbotsford andChilliwack.

The original report recommendedB.C. restore the number of provin-cial court judges from 126.3 full-timeequivalents (FTEs) in September2010 to the 2005 level of 143.6. Thenumber of judges was 125.1 FTEs atthe end of June, about 15 per centfewer than in 2005 despite morecases of greater complexity.

The province passed a budget thisspring requiring further cuts tocourt staffing.

The Abbotsford Heat released their matrix of opponents for the 2011-12 season on Thursday morning, and the best news for local fans is that the Vancouver Canucks’ new affili-ate will visit the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre four times this season.

During their first two years of existence, the Heat had occu-pied the old North Division with the Manitoba Moose – formerly the Canucks’ top farm team – and played them eight times per season, four at home and four away.

Miller makes strides in

heptathlonDan KINVIGAbbotsford News

Track and field ath-letes typically compete as individuals, but Natasha Miller is find-ing there’s value in the collaborative process.

After wrapping up her collegiate career at Biola University in Los Angeles this spring, the Abbotsford heptathlete decided to move to Calgary to train under former Canadian national team head coach Les Gramantik as she works toward carded athlete status.

In Calgary, Miller trains alongside high-profile track stars like former world cham-pion hurdler Perdita Felicien, top-ranked Canadian male sprint-er Sam Effah, and most pivotally for Miller, Jessica Zelinka, the fifth-ranked heptath-lete in the world.

“The community I’m in is so much higher than I’m used to,” Miller said. “There’s Olympians here, and being with those peo-ple, you’re pushed to compete at a higher level.

“It’s a great opportu-nity to train with other girls who are work-

ing towards the same goals as me in the hep-tathlon. The last four years of my career (at Biola) has been a lot of individual training. Getting in that group atmosphere, having Natasha Miller, pictured above competing in the

hurdles, is a multi-event star in the heptathlon.

Miller bronzed at nationalspeople to push me, has been a great thing.”

Miller, a Mennonite Educational Institute grad, left Biola as the most decorated athlete in that school’s history. She won 12 individual NAIA titles and earned All-American hon-ours 23 times over her four years.

The past couple months have been a somewhat turbulent time of tran-sition for Miller – leaving behind her college friends in California, moving to a new city where she didn’t know anyone, and parting ways with her familiar coaches with the Abbotsford-based Valley Royals. She admits it’s been a “challenging” time, but she’s dealing with it by immersing herself in training.

“Having people to watch really helps,” she said. “I’m a visual learn-er, so watching Jessica do the events really helps me figure out how to do things and what works for me.”

The early returns have been en-couraging. At the recent CanadianTrack and Field Championships inCalgary, Miller set personal bestsin five of the seven heptathlonevents – 100-metre hurdles, shotput, long jump, javelin and 800mrun – en route to a bronze medal. She finished with 5,581 points, trail-ing Valley Royals teammate RukyAbdulai (6,150) and Zelinka (6,132).

“It couldn’t have gone better,”Miller said. “I was a little worriedgoing into it, because by this timeof the season, I’m pretty tired men-tally and physically. The fact Godgave me the strength to keep going,it was really awesome.”

The next big event on Miller’s cal-endar is the Summer Universiade,Aug. 12-23 in Shenzhen, China. TheCanadian track team for that meethasn’t been officially named yet,but it’s expected that Miller will bepicked for the squad.

against Manitoba over the past two seasons, compared to 3,579 for non-Moose games.

Off-season franchise shuffling put that ar-rangement in jeopardy. With the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers moving to Winnipeg, the Moose were displaced and landed in St. John’s, Nfld. That franchise will now serve as the top farm team for the new Winnipeg Jets.

The Canucks, mean-

while, signed a two-year affiliation deal with the Chicago Wolves in June. Under the AHL’s new three-divisions-per-conference align-ment, the Heat are in the West Division, while the Wolves are in the Midwest.

For the coming sea-son, AHL teams will play all 76 games against conference foes. The Heat play their West Division rivals – the Houston Aeros, Texas Stars,

San Antonio Rampageand Oklahoma CityBarons – eight timeseach, four times athome and four away. They face non-divisionfoes twice at home andtwice away.

The Wolves are theexception to that pat-tern. Abbotsford andChicago are slated tomeet four times at theAESC and four timesin the Windy City.

The complete AHLschedule will be re-leased in August.

BROWNDoris (Vaudry)

It is with sadness that we say goodbye to Doris who left us on July 6, 2011 at the age of 74 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Pem-broke, Ontario to Isadore and Antoinette Vaudry, she was the oldest of 4 girls. Having moved to BC to begin her career as a registered nurse, she met and married Guy Brown, her husband of 23 years. Mom loved the out-doors and was active in local biking, hiking and skiing clubs throughout the years. More recently, she became involved with square dancing.

Always having a nurse’s heart, she cared for many and will be missed by her children: Heather (Lonny Andrews), Peter, her sisters: Joan Vaud-ry (Gary Stewart), Doreen (Clarence Nieman), brother-in-law, Moe Cliché, ex-husband, Guy, as well as many neph-ews, nieces and friends. Doris is pre-deceased by her parents and her sister: Rita Cliché.

At Mom’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of fl ow-ers, donations to Christine Morrison Hospice or the Cana-dian Cancer Society. Specials thanks to Dr. Walia and the Abbotsford Cancer Centre; Dr. Potter and all the angels at the hospice.

Catherwood/Henry, Doris (nee Robson)

Additions to the family have been Sheldon Moore (husband to Melanie) and Gabija Zaikauskaite (wife to Jarrett). Grandchildren Amanda, Caleb, and Melissa Moore, Greta and Emma Enns have been added.Laura was an excellent teach-er for her students, a devoted mother to her children, adored by her grandchildren and a wonderful mate to her hus-band. HUBLER, Laurette, Theresa (nee Chaille)

July 17, 1929 - July 10, 2011

Our sweet Laurette has been taken home by our Lord, Jesus Christ after a long, and diffi cult illness. She was a model of great faith and courage during this, her time of great suffering. Her absence will be greatly felt by all those who loved her and cherished her presence here on this earth. These are the titles by which we hold her dear: loving wife and sweet-heart for almost 60 years, Mother and Mom, Grandma, GG, Sister, Auntie and friend. She is survived by her dear husband, Frank Hubler; her children, Judy Penner (nee Hubler), Rod Hubler, Wendy Methot (nee Hubler), and Wal-lace Hubler. Laurette was also blessed with and survived by her 9 grandchildren and their spouses and 7 great-grandbabies and her son-in-laws, Allan Penner and Terry Methot. Because of Laurette’s warm and nurturing heart her niece Shirley Jensen (nee Chartrand) was her “third” daughter and our sister. She also loved her extended family members and made sure eve-ryone felt included, loved and cared about. Although our Mom was born in Gravel-burg, Saskatchewan, she spent the majority of her life raising the family with hus-band, Frank, in B.C. But, Laurette always made sure she visited and kept in touch with her family and roots in the Prairies. Thank you, Mom for making our family a family and for always reminding us of the importance of family. We love you and are happy you are with Our Heavenly Father. Please put in a good word for us.A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 33333 Mayfair Ave., Abbotsford, B.C. There will be a viewing on Sunday, July 17, 2001 from 6-8 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, BC. Online condolences may be given at www.woodlawnfh-abbotsord.com
