GLOSSARY
Abstraction Removal of water from surface water or ground water usually
by pumping.
Adaptation (Climate
Change)
Sometimes referred to as ‘addressing the consequences of
climate change’ - adaptation is a process of assessing risks from
climatic variability and climate change and making changes in
response to associated effects / impacts and opportunities (i.e.
preparing to better survive change). Although the focus is
increasingly on human systems, adaptation also has importance
within a biodiversity context for species and habitats.
Central to adaptation is the principle of building resilience
within and across the subject, be it a business, development,
project, event etc. Climate Change adaptation is increasingly
being addressed within organisations -- from environmental
management and sustainability through to supply chain
initiatives, risk management and business continuity.
Alluvium Sedimentary deposits (generally clay, silt, sand and gravel)
resulting from the action of a river or body of running water.
Deposited in areas such as flood plains.
Aquifer A water-bearing bed of strata, either by virtue of its porosity or
because it is pervious.
Attenuation A reduction of peak flows over a longer period of time by way
of storing water which would otherwise exceed the allowable
discharge rate. An attenuation area, therefore, is the storage
area where surface water runoff is held prior to being
discharged into the watercourse/ drainage system, which
comes into use when the inflow exceeds the restricted outflow.
Augering A subsurface detection method using either a hand or machine-
powered drill to determine the depth and character of
archaeological deposits.
Baseline Studies of existing environmental conditions which are
designed to establish the existing conditions against which any
future changes can be measured or predicted.

Biodiversity The variety of life expressed through the diversity of habitats,
the species which live in them, and the natural variation in the
genetic constitutions of these species.
Biodiversity Action Plan
(BAP)
The UK Government’s plan for the protection and sustainable
use of biodiversity, published in 1994. It represents a
commitment to joint action nationwide through the securing
and better use of resources.
Bore/borehole A hole drilled into rock or soils to allow an assessment to be
made of the rock, soil or ground encountered.
Bund A protective structure used to prevent the spillage and dispersal
of potentially contaminated liquids, such that if the original
container failed there would be no spillage onto surrounding
ground. A health and safety preventative measure.
Cartographic Relating to maps.
Controlled waters Inland, coastal, territorial and groundwater to which British
pollution control legislation applies. Waters defined and
protected under the Water Resources Act 1991.
Core strategy The Core Strategy is the principal document in the Local
Development Framework (LDF). It sets out a vision, spatial
strategy and core policies to guide development and change in
the Local Authority.
Corridor studies A study to determine the best way to serve existing and future
travel demands.
Culvert A drain or pipe that allows water to flow under a road, railroad,
trail, or similar obstruction.
Cumulative impacts The summation of effects that result from changes caused by a
development in conjunction with other past, present or
reasonably foreseeable actions.
Decibel (dB) Unit used to describe quantify sound pressure levels or noise
levels. 0 dB is the approximate threshold of hearing and 120 –
140 dB is the threshold of pain. A decibel is a logarithmic
quantity and for sound pressure is calculated relative to a
reference sound pressure level of 20 μPa. A change of 1 dB is
just detectable under carefully controlled listening conditions.

Dewatering The removal of naturally occurring water from excavated
trenches.
Drift A general term used for superficial deposits i.e. as opposed to
solid rock formations.
Easement Width/ Strip An area of land that may require further maintenance post
construction.
Ecosystem A biological community of interacting organisms and their
physical environment.
Enhancement Improvement through restoration, reconstruction or creation.
Environmental impact The processes whereby a change, which may be adverse,
beneficial, or both, is brought about in the existing environment
as a result of development activities.
Environmental Impact
Assessment
The process of identifying, predicting, evaluating and mitigating
the biophysical, social, and other relevant effects of
development proposals prior to major decisions being taken
and commitments made. The Process in conducted in England
under the terms of the Town and Country Planning
(Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations 2011, England.
Environmental Statement A document which sets out the developer's assessment of the
likely effects of the project on the environment and which is
submitted in conjunction with an application for planning
permission.
European Protected

law throughout the European Union.
Fauna All members of the animal kingdom: vertebrates (e.g. birds,
mammals and fish) and invertebrates (e.g. insects).
Flood risk A combination of the probability and frequency occurrence of
harm being realised from a flood hazard.
Flood Risk Assessment A formal consideration of flood risk at a particular site. Required
to be submitted to accompany planning applications for
development sites that are at risk of flooding and could increase
the flooding risk to surrounding areas.

ST13628
Floodplain A flat or nearly flat land adjacent to a stream or river that
stretches from the banks of its channel to the base of the
enclosing valley walls and experiences flooding during periods
of high discharge.
Flora All members of the plant kingdom: higher ferns, ferns and fern
allies, mosses and liverworts, algae and phytoplankton, fungi
and lichens.
Geology The science comprising the study of solid Earth and the
processes by which it evolves
Geophysical survey A range of methods used to detect buried archaeological
remains without excavation, by measuring magnetic responses
or electrical conductivity.
Glacial till Unsorted glacial sediment of various sizes.
Groundwater Water that has percolated into the ground. It includes water in
both the unsaturated zone and the water table.
Habitat The space occupied by a community of plants and animals.
Haul roads Temporary roads constructed for access and safe movement of
plant/machinery.
Hectare (ha) 1 hectare being equivalent to 10,000 m2 (approx 2.4 acres).
Historic Environment
Record (HER)
A county by county database of archaeological sites, maintained
by the relevant local authority.
Indirect Impact Impacts on the environment, which are not a direct result of the
development but are often produced away from it or as a result
of a complex pathway. Sometimes referred to as secondary
impacts.
Impact Significance Impact significance places value on impact magnitude. It relates
to the importance society places on the resources affected, the
importance of the impact to system stability and sustainability.
Invasive species A species that is non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under
consideration and whose introduction causes or is likely to
cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human
health. Invasive species can be plants, animals, and other
organisms (e.g., microbes).

LA90 dB The LA90 noise parameter is A-weighted noise level exceeded
for 90% of the measurement per iod. This noise index is widely
accepted as a descriptor of ‘background’ noise levels which is
the underlying noise in the absence of short-term events.
LAeq,T The equivalent Continuous Sound Pressure Level. This is a
notional level of steady dB(A) level having the same acoustic
energy as a fluctuating A-weighted sound level over a specified
measurement period (T).
LAeq dB The LAeq noise level is defined as the equivalent steady-state
sound level over a specified measurement period with the same
energy as the
actual fluctuating noise over the same time period. This noise
index is widely accepted as a descriptor of ‘ambient’ or average
noise level.
Land Use The primary use of the land, including both rural and urban
activities.
Landscape Human perception of the land conditioned by knowledge and
identity with a place.
Landscape Character The distinct, recognisable and consistent combination (or
pattern) of elements which occurs in an area of landscape; the
way in which all the components come together to make the
landscape distinctive.
Landscape Feature A prominent eye-catching element, e.g. wooded hill top or
church spire.
Landscape Value The importance attached to a landscape or view, (often as a
basis for designation or recognition) which expresses national
or local consensus, because of its quality, special qualities,
cultural associations or ecological state.
