Directions for the Smiley Sun Pattern

Use the Smiley Sun pattern as a math mat.

• Try completing addition or subtraction sentences using sunflower seeds as manipulatives.

• Have the students practice printing the numbers 1 –12 inside the sun.

• Reduce the smiley sun pattern to make flashcards. Copy the reduced suns on different color construction paper such as yellow, orange and red. Then have students create sun patterns using the flashcards: yellow, yellow, orange, yellow, yellow, orange and so on.

Use the Smiley Sun pattern as a writing frame.

• Have the students write their name in the sun. Then place all the suns around the room to show off what bright learners are in your room. (Pre-school)

• Have the students write a summer poem or story in the pot.

• Have the students research the sun and list 3 sun facts on the smiley sun pattern.

Use the Smiley Sun pattern as a class made book cover.

• In the summer . . . o Have the students write about summer and

illustrate their page. Combine the pages together and staple to form a class book.

Directions for the Student Book Patterns

• Photocopy and quarter fold each “The Sun” book pattern.

• Have each student color and read the book.

Directions for the Weather Graph Use the weather graph to record the weather in your community for one week. You may wish to have each student write weather details in the square under each day. For example if Monday is a sunny day, you may wish to have the students check and write down the temperature or describe the day in more detail. It is sunny outside with some light clouds. The temperature is 85 degrees. Directions for the “My Shadow” Class Book After completing the shadow science activity listed in the science section, make a class book, Have each student write about what he/she was able to do with his/her shadow. Samples could include: My shadow and I can skip together. My shadow and I can swing together. My shadow and I can race. And so on.

Pumpkin Art & Sentence Building Make a copy of the pumpkin and sentence for each student. Have the students’ color or sponge paint the pumpkin. When they have finished, they can cut out the word blocks and arrange them to build the sentence – A pumpkin is orange and round. After you have checked to ensure that they have built the sentence correctly, the students can glue the sentence on or below their pumpkin.

Student Made Book – “Bats” Copy and quarter fold a book for each student. Have the students read the book to you. Be sure that the students touch tap each word as they read. Then have the student’s color each page and print their name on the cover.

Class Book – Costume Parade Have each student write their name and what they will be for Halloween on the page. Put the pages together to make a class book. ie. Mark will be a fireman for Halloween.

Writing Page: After having visited a pumpkin patch, have the students write about the experience in the pumpkin frame. Math Mat: Have the students sort nuts and seeds, record addition or subtraction sentences using pumpkin seeds as manipulatives, or write the numbers 1 through 20 in the pumpkin frame. Class Book Cover: The pumpkin frame makes a wonder class book cover. Simply write the title in the pumpkin, copy onto orange construction paper, and laminate. Poetry or Picture Frames: The pumpkin makes a wonderful frame for just about anything including student poems, photographs or artwork.

Turkey Art and Sentence Building Make a copy of the turkey and sentence for each student. Have the students’ color or sponge paint the turkey. After you have checked to ensure that they have built the sentence correctly, the students can glue the sentence on their turkey.

Student Made Book - “Turkey Time” Copy, cut and staple a book for each student. Have the students read the book to you. Be sure that the students touch-tap each word as they read. Then have the student’s color each page and print their name on the cover.

Class Book - “I am Thankful For” Have each student write their name, what they re thankful for and why on the student page. Use the Turkey Page as a cover and put the student pages together to make a class book. ie. I am thankful for my mom because she gives me hugs.

Math Mat: Have the students sort nuts and seeds, record addition or subtraction sentences using nuts & seeds as manipulatives, or write the numbers 1 through 20 in the turkey frame. Class Book Cover: The turkey frame makes a wonderful class book cover. Simply write the title in the turkey, copy onto tan construction paper, and laminate. Poetry or Picture Frames: The turkey makes a wonderful frame for just about anything including student poems, photographs or artwork. Art: Color the turkey using chalk or oil pastels. If you plan ahead, ask students to save cleaned and dried egg shells. Crush the egg shells and then dye the crushed shells using food coloring. Glue the colored crushed eggs shells onto the turkey.
