Yellowstone: Autumn

Sunday, 4 October 2009 Final

Over the summer, Yellowstone has flourished - in late August there are more living things here than at any other time of the year. But winter is around the corner and there are just two months for all Yellowstone’s animals to get ready or get out. An early dusting of snow is a sign for elk to start moving down from the mountains to focus on finding food in the valleys. Although the wolves are waiting for them, the male elk are distracted, their haunting bugle call boasting that they are fired up and ready to fight each other to the death for the right to breed. As temperatures fall further, beavers get busy in a rush to repair dams and stock underwater larders before ice freezes their ponds. Yellowstone’s forests, the aspens, cottonwoods and maples, start to shut down for the winter, their colours painting Yellowstone a blaze of red and gold.

Meanwhile another tree is coming into its own, the whitebark pine. It offers up a bumper crop of pine nuts which fatten grizzly bears and squirrels alike. But its nuts are meant for another animal – the Clark’s nutcracker – a small bird with a colossal memory, and one that will reward the tree’s efforts well by carrying its seeds far and wide and even planting them. As autumn ends, the snow and ice return and many animals now move out from the heart of Yellowstone and so away from the protection of the national park. Here, their fight is not only to survive the cold, but also to find what little wild space remains in the modern world. All around Yellowstone, the human world is encroaching – it is now that the true value of the ‘world’s first national park’ becomes clearer than ever.

Midsomer Murders: The Great And The Good

Sunday, 4 October 2009 Final

John Nettles and Jason Hughes are back investigating deadly deeds and gruesome goings-on in a brand new series of Midsomer Murders. In episode seven, The Great And The Good, the local school teacher is a damsel in distress. Is she imagining the intruder in her house, or is she really in danger?

Connie Bishop’s neighbours are used to her flinging open her bedroom windows and screaming for help in the middle of the night, but no intruder can ever be found. Many of the villagers think Connie is simply imagining the intruder and working herself into hysterics - and even Connie has her doubts.

But when Barnaby and Jones investigate, they discover that someone has indeed been loitering around Connie’s house. The fact that half the village know where her backdoor key is hidden – under a flower pot - means catching the intruder won’t be easy.

When not one, but two dead bodies are found in Connie’s garden, and she confesses that she has been having bad nightmares and sleepwalking, she is certain that she is the murderer, and that she has been killing people in her sleep.

But Barnaby is convinced that Connie is not the murderer, and uncovers the cunning plan of a social climbing local to oust Connie from the local fundraising committee for personal gain.

Another crime solved, Barnaby returns to peaceful village life with his wife Joyce. It’s just another day in Midsomer.

Compass: What Should I Do?: Part Two

Sunday, 4 October 2009

Once upon a time the big decisions in life were about births, deaths and marriages. But today many of our little, everyday decisions have grown into big dilemmas.

It’s become harder to make choices when the consequences seem increasingly complex and far-reaching. Has all this decision making become too exhausting and overwhelming? Or just plain absurd?

In each episode of this two-part Compass special Geraldine Doogue is joined by five guests who, over nibbles and drinks, discuss everyday dilemmas big and small, to help answer the question: What should I do?

At the table in What Should I Do? Part 2, are: the Sydney Institute’s Anne Henderson, comedian Anh Do, Rabbi Jacqueline Ninio, environmental activist David Burgess and Sheikh Jehad Ismail.

Dilemmas up for discussion this time around include shopping ethically, considering the environment when choosing travel options (think carbon emissions and offsets), whether to give to beggars knowing they may use the money in ways you may not support (like buying drugs), working for tobacco companies, and how far you go to champion a cause.

These are the debates we are having at home and at work with family, friends and colleagues. Sometimes hilarious and sometimes profound, they are among the big and small dilemmas that challenge us every day.

Compass: What Should I Do?: Part Two will be repeated on ABC2 – Friday, October 09 at 5:55pm

Talking Heads: Greg Mortimer

Monday, 5 October 2009

What’s it like to stand on top of Mt Everest watching the sun set? To mark the 25th anniversary of the first Australian ascent of the world’s highest peak, this week’s guest on Talking Heads is adventurer Greg Mortimer.

Mortimer has spent a lifetime in very rarefied air, climbing the world’s most dangerous mountains. On October 3rd 1984 Mortimer and fellow climber Tim Macartney-Snape not only became the first Aussies to scale Mount Everest, but they also took a new route up the difficult North Face. In typical Australian fashion, they were climbing without the assistance of supplementary bottled oxygen - because it cost too much!

Mortimer has loved extremes since he first clapped eyes on the Three Sisters peaks in the Blue Mountains as a teenager. His achievements include the first ever summit of Annapurna II via it’s south face, the first Australian summit of Antarctica's highest peak, Vinson Massif and the first Australian ascent of K2, the second tallest mountain in the world.

If the top of the world has loomed large in Mortimer’s life, so has the bottom. Since 1992, he and his partner Margaret have been busy taking visitors to Antarctica. As he tells Peter Thompson, this is not tourism done by halves. It costs $250,000 just to fuel the ship.

Although Mortimer has received the Order of Australia Medal for mountaineering and is the recipient of three Australian Geographic society medals, he does not seem to have pursued records or recognition.

“For me, climbing in extremes requires a very quiet heart, and a quiet mind probably as well… I just like it.”

Talking Heads: Greg Mortimer will be repeated on ABC2 – Tuesday, October 06 at 5.00pm

Ashes To Ashes

Monday, 5 October 2009

Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes) was shot in 2008 and was stunned when she woke up in 1981. Confronted by the politically incorrect DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) and his right-hand men, DS Ray Carling (Dean Andrews) and DC Chris Skelton (Marshall Lancaster), Alex was determined not to hang around in the past for long. It is now 1982, the Falklands War has started, corruption in the force is rife and Alex is no nearer to finding the key to returning to the future.

When a man is found dead in a Soho strip club, it looks like a sex game has gone wrong. So when the deceased is discovered to be PC Sean Irvine, Gene and Alex are ordered to keep the case under wraps by Gene’s new boss, Detective Superintendent (Supermac) Mackintosh. Mac is determined to rid the force of police corruption and clean up the streets of London in the process; his no-nonsense attitude quickly impresses Alex and the team.

PC Irvine was supposed to be clearing the streets of vice but Gene believes he was corrupted by the red lights of Soho. An incriminating photo of the copper with a mystery brunette, found near his body, seems to confirm Gene’s suspicions.

However, Alex is troubled by Sean’s wife’s insistence that her husband wasn’t that sort of man, and when the pathologist uncovers signs that Sean was murdered, the team has to contend with the terrifying possibility that the killer could be one of their own.

Meanwhile, sounds and messages from the future suggest to Alex that her circumstances have changed. Is there someone out there who can help her?

Rivers And Life: Yangtze

Tuesday, 6 October 2009 New Series

Celebrating the ever-changing nature of man’s relationship with the earth’s amazing water systems, Rivers And Life is a six-part series exploring six of the world’s most iconic watercourses: the Amazon, the Nile, the Mississippi, the Ganges, the Yangtze, and the Rhine.

Compelling stories about the lives lived along these river banks are told: from the indigenous communities who dwell in harmony with the rivers, to the modern traders and artisans who make their livings there. And the vast metropolises, which now more than ever, depend on 21st century technologies to keep the ancient waters at bay, are unveiled.

Rich in texture and observation and filmed at some of the most remote and beautiful locations - from glacial springs and mystical sources to ferocious rapids and sprawling deltas - each episode is driven by a powerful narrative, derived from the nature of the river itself.

Episode One - YangtzeFlowing over 6,000km from source to sea, the Yangtze River is one of the most utilized water ways in the world. It’s also one of the most deadly. Throughout the last century, its ferocious flooding killed over three hundred thousand people. But now man has struck back, with an engineering project designed to corral the river’s destructive forces and bring the Yangtze firmly under human control.

The Three Gorges Dam is a concrete mega-structure so large it’s visible from space. This triumph of modern engineering is capable of producing enough hydro-electricity to power a ninth of China’s total needs. But there has been a huge cost to this transformation. The story of the Yangtze today is a story of change along every kilometre of its route. A new chapter in the Yangtze’s long history has begun....

Athens: The Truth About Democracy: Democracy

Tuesday, 6 October 2009 Final

Historian Bettany Hughes explores the ‘Golden Age’ of ancient Athens at the dawn of democracy.

In the sixth century BC, Athens was run by tyrants, rulers who governed with absolute power, but when one young aristocrat decided to use ‘the power of the people’ on his side to defeat a rival, the genie was out of the bottle. Democracy was born.

Voting was restricted to male citizens born in Athens. Slaves and foreigners could not vote, and women not only could not vote, but also had to be veiled outside the home.

The most famous of all the generals, Pericles, built the Parthenon to celebrate Athens power, but he also took the city into a disastrous conflict, the Peloponnesian War, which was to be their ultimate undoing.

But against this background of conflict Athens attracted great thinkers and scientists. Art and culture thrived. At exactly the same time that democracy was emerging, new, more realistic style of sculpture flourished. The Athenians invented drama as an art and used it to debate problems on stage for citizens to see.

The tensions within the fifth century Athenian society can be encapsulated in the trial and death of Socrates. He was a brilliant philosopher and original thinker, but when Athens was finally defeated in the Peloponnesian war, the citizens were looking for a scapegoat. He had ridiculed the idea of government by non-experts and had coached many of the arrogant aristocrats who had failed in battle.

When Socrates was condemned for impiety and the corruption of youth, he refused to compromise in any way, and rejected an offer to go into exile. He stood trial and was condemned to death by drinking Hemlock.

Democracy with its emphasis on free speech could not tolerate an attack on democracy itself.

Australia's Heritage: National Treasures: Ned Kelly's Armour

Thursday, 8 October 2009 Final

Take a voyage of discovery with The Chaser’s Chris Taylor as he reveals the secrets behind a fascinating mix of treasures from Australia’s National Heritage List.

Chris travels around Australia delivering historical snapshots of places from the National Heritage List. Established by the Australian Government in 2004, the National Heritage List is a collection of places that contribute to Australia's national identity.

In this mini-documentary series, Chris talks with experts and enthusiasts, revealing fascinating insights into our famous and not-so-famous past. Visiting objects and places of significance, including Fremantle Prison and the ruins of the Dutch merchant ship Batavia in Western Australia, the Eureka flag and the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Victoria, Francis De Groot’s sword in NSW and the Naracoorte Caves Fossil Mammal site in South Australia, Chris Taylor’s enthusiasm shines a welcome spotlight on the sometimes forgotten gems that are an irreplaceable part of our national story.

In the final documentary of the series Chris goes to Glenrowan, site of the famous siege of bushranger Ned Kelly, to see his legendary armour. From violent cop killer to a champion of the working class, Ned Kelly is a solid gold Australian icon and folk hero. By the time Kelly was captured at Glenrowan in June 1880 – a precinct included on the National Heritage List – the bearded bushranger had won the hearts of Victorians. When he was sentenced to hang five months later for the murder of three policemen at Stringybark Creek, 30,000 people signed a petition demanding clemency. The iron armour that saved – or some might say cost him – his life is preserved as a national treasure in the State Library of Victoria.

Dead Famous

Thursday, 8 October 2009

Media AlertAs you are aware, there is currently a trial under way in Victoria in relation to the murder of Lewis Moran. To avoid contempt of court issues, the current broadcast date falls after the trial is scheduled to finish. If it does not finish by that date, we anticipate the broadcast date will be postponed.

As there are a number of other criminal charges against various individuals in relation to Victorian gangland incidents, the ABC recommends that you obtain legal advice about any contempt of court of other issues relevant to anything you may wish to publish about the documentary.

Dead Famous lifts the lid on the slaughter that resulted when two underworld tribes went to war over drug profits during Melbourne’s infamous gangland killings.

This one-hour documentary takes viewers behind the frenzied headlines to put the killings in their true perspective.

Leading crime writers John Silvester and Andrew Rule analyse the causes and effects of the decade-long war. They investigate the reasons it began, why it was allowed to escalate and flourish for so long and point to what lessons, if any, have been learned by law makers and breakers alike.

It was a unique combination of circumstances that allowed the gangland wars to flourish – and saw so many criminals turn the underworld into a glitzy public soap-opera, played out on the front pages of newspapers, nightly television news bulletins and popular magazines for months on end.

Using a mix of archive and actual event footage, subtle dramatic recreation in actual locations, interviews with major players from both sides of the law and incisive and entertaining comment from Silvester and Rule, Dead Famous traces the history and character of this brutal episode that has become such a part of our recent social history.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:Presented by Andrew Rule and John Silvester. Producers: Terry Carlyon and Robyn Miller. Director: Terry Carlyon. Produced by DD&B Productions/Carlyon-Miller Productions. ABC TV Commissioning Editor: Alan Erson.

Collectors

Friday, 9 October 2009 200th Episode

The legendary Big Ted and Jemima from the ABC’s Playschool join us in the studio to salute a superb collection of radio and TV memorabilia, but before getting to that, what better way to celebrate a milestone than to create a stylish cocktail or two?

Mixologist and liquor industry consultant Sven Almenning is devoted to the art and history of the cocktail. Cocktails took off in the USA from 1920 during the Prohibition era. Sven’s collection of cocktail shakers, glasses and spoons spans the period 1880 to 1950, and many of the Art deco ones are stunning. Most come from America and some from Germany. As an appreciator of the great variety of the cocktail, Sven shares an irony with us. His grandfather was president of the Norwegian Society!

Jemima and Big Ted meet up with the gang on the big red couch for Andy’s story on the ABC heritage collection. Veteran cameraman Dennis Brennan has spent years searching out and saving old broadcast equipment, cameras, radios, microphones, record players, the lot. If its honourable working life is over, it’s fair game for Dennis’ virtual museum, which is currently just a shed at the old ABC Sydney Gore Hill site.

Lynne Boothey has been collecting Kinder surprises for 15 years and now has 6000. Her approach is simple. She has no boundaries and is dedicated to display. Why keep them in boxes, all neat and tidy? So her house is the museum using every shelf, display cabinet, window sill, every inch of wall space. All 6000... and growing!

Gordon and Adrian compete on the auction floor, and all the panel show off their favourite moments of the past 200 episodes.

Then the discovery of a burnt-out van offers fresh evidence to Barclay’s (Hugh Bonneville) team, but the prime suspect slips away at a most inopportune time. A furious Matt joins Gary and the police in a night time stakeout at the home of Hazel Betts.

Saturday, 10 October 2009

Australia’s all conquering men’s wheelchair basketball team – the Rollers – take their first hopeful steps towards winning their first World Championship title with a qualifying tournament this week against the best teams from Asia and Oceania.

Today’s 30-minute preview program will assess Australia’s formidable form going into the tournament and examine the Rollers opponents – Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, and China.

Three teams from this Asia Oceania Championship, being played at Dandenong, Victoria, from Tuesday, October 13th – Saturday, October 17th, will qualify for the World Championships to be played in Birmingham, England, in July 2010.

Hosting today’s preview program will be ABC basketball commentator Darren Boyd.

According to Darren the Rollers are currently dominating men’s wheelchair basketball.

“Australia’s incredible strength and athleticism combined with their big match mentality has them firm favourites to win the Asia Oceania Championship and go through to the World Championships next year,” Darren says.

“But their opponents, particularly Japan, China and Korea will not roll over easily, and basketball fans can expect each game to be a hard fought tussle.”

Australia’s opening game of the tournament against Kuwait will be screened live (AEDT) on ABC2 on Tuesday, October 13th at 6:30pm.

Eventually he blurts out how he feels. Esther is shocked and moved. But she is still suspicious about Jakes’ relationship with Layla and, finally, Jake comes clean.

The Bill: Live By The Sword

Saturday, 10 October 2009

Sgt. Callum Stone (Sam Callis) and PC Ben Gayle (Micah Balfour) come across a teenager who’s been brutally assaulted, and the victim’s brother and a friend identify the attacker as white. But when a young man of mixed race, Ollie Readshaw (Jazz Lintott) flees from police, they assume he’s the assailant, and set off in pursuit. But Ollie is killed trying to cross the road.

DI Neil Manson (Andrew Lancel) interviews the boy’s grieving mother Debbie (Julia Ford) in search of a motive for the assault, and she claims her son was with her at the time. Meanwhile, DC Banks is assigned as Family Liaison Officer to the assault victim's family, in an effort to glean any more information from the victim’s relatives.

With police convinced that Ollie was the attacker, Manson has the unenviable task of persuading a mother to betray her dead son by telling the truth about his whereabouts. But just as the distraught mother finally admits that Ollie wasn’t with her at the time, the young brother of the assault victim finally tells the truth.

Cold Blood: The Last Hurrah

Saturday, 10 October 2009 Final

A baby called Jake Osbourne is kidnapped and a major investigation begins. Norton (Pauline Quirke) doesn’t think the baby’s name is a coincidence, and suspects that Wicklow is involved. Jake (John Hannah) is brought in to help with the investigation, something Eve (Jemma Redgrave) resents following their break-up. The team is convinced that Wicklow is finally planning his revenge upon Jake. He’s dying of cancer and it’s his last chance. News of the kidnapping and of Jake’s involvement in the case becomes known to the press, and a media feeding frenzy begins. This leads to Jake’s son, Joss (Will Roache), finding out the truth about his father from a journalist. Jake seeks out Joss to explain, but is beaten up by him in a ferocious attack.

Wicklow’s sister, Barbara is identified as a suspect. The team are now convinced that Wicklow has masterminded the whole thing and that Barbara has the baby. Can they find her and can Jake protect those he loves most with Wicklow after revenge...

River Cottage Spring

The Bristol experiment, to turn an acre of derelict city land into a small holding, continues as vegan Jess picks up a batch of hens from a nearby battery egg farm. Having lived practically their whole lives in cramped cages, will the hens be capable of laying?

At River Cottage, Hugh’s invested in a new hatchery for his duck eggs and is amazed to find the ducklings arriving days early. He also organises a foraging competition pitting a kayak team against a shoreline team – whatever they find during the day is what they’ll feast on in the evening.

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors is bursting with the innovative and the imaginative, the unique and the unusual, the fantastic and the fascinating. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: engineer James Bradfield Moody, materials engineer Veena Sahajwalla, and futurist and author Mark Pesce. Inventions featured on the program:

IMAQCUT – by inventor Paul McCleary from NSW. Sheet metal needs to be cut to exact specifications so that it can be used to make anything from cars, to white goods, and even sculptures. However, the machines used to cut this metal have a number of serious safety problems. Cutting steel with a plasma torch emits carcinogenic fumes, which can poison workers. The torch cuts over a horizontal bench, which means it is easy to injure your back bending over to lift the metal on and off the table. The torch, which burns at 15,000 degrees, can blind people who look directly at it, and there is no protection from high-speed moving parts that can cut off a finger or a hand in an instant. It is unbelievable that workers can be placed in such danger on a daily basis, but until now there has been no alternative.

Having worked in the industry, inventor Paul McCleary was acutely aware of the hazards of plasma cutting, but he came upon the solution almost by accident. He built a regular plasma cutter at home, but when he realised it was taking up his whole garage he hinged it to the wall. One day he accidentally started the machine while it was up against the wall, sparking his imagination about the possibility of a vertical plasma cutter. After a lot of time spent on research and development, Paul invented the world's first vertical and fully enclosed plasma cutting machine. As the machine is enclosed, all of the fumes can be fully extracted so they are not breathed in by workers. Steel sheets can be loaded without straining the back. The torch is covered so there is no longer any risk of eye damage, and the machine shuts down automatically if the doors are opened, so people are protected from moving parts.

BELKIZ FEEDAWAY – by inventor Betul Madakbas from VIC. It’s hard for parents of young children to get out of the house, especially when you need to bring along a huge load of baby accessories. Inventor Betul Madakbas wanted a portable baby chair that was practical, light, cheap, environmentally friendly and disposable. When she couldn’t find one she decided to make it herself. The Belkiz Feedaway is made from recycled cardboard and can be used up to 30 times before the whole chair is recycled. It is folded flat when not in use, so it can be easily transported wherever it is needed.

RELEASE AND RETRIEVE BOAT LATCH – by inventor Geoffrey Davis from SA. It can be very difficult and even dangerous to load a boat onto a trailer. The Release and Retrieve Boat Latch automatically releases the boat, easing it into the water so that you can launch and retrieve your boat from the comfort of the deck, without damage or injury.

The New Inventors will be repeated on ABC2 – Friday, October 09 at 4:30pm

Catalyst

WiFi Windfall

Imagine inventing a piece of technology with extreme lucrative potential only and then having to enter an extensive court battle against the world’s technology giants to prove ownership! Well that’s exactly what happened to a small group of Australian scientists from the CSIRO. In an Australian David verses global Goliaths epic, CSIRO successfully won a long-running legal battle enforcing its patent on technology used in connecting local wireless networks for a settlement worth many millions of dollars. Dr Jonica Newby delivers an intriguing story that begins in the dusty fields of outback New South Wales and ends in a courtroom showdown in Texas.

Virtual Clinic

Depression is Australia’s second biggest health problem after heart disease, yet the resources available to treat people effectively are often out of reach. Tools for the remote delivery of therapy over the internet do exist, but the adherence rate to this method of cognitive behavioural therapy stands at just 1%. In an effort to improve this figure, researchers at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney have developed a program which combines face-to-face clinical consultations with internet based therapy. Join Dr Norman Swan as he checks out the results and sees what part virtual clinics might play in the future treatment of mental illness.

Carbon Country Up-date

In 2006 Mark Horstman headed to Arnhem Land to report on the first carbon trading agreement of its kind in the world. The agreement struck a deal between an energy company, government and local Aboriginal communities. Conoco-Phillips was able to offset its greenhouse gas emissions from their gas refinery in Darwin Harbour, by funding the seasonal burning of fire breaks. Now, three years later, Mark Horstman investigates how the emissions trading scheme, currently being thrashed out in Canberra, might impact on the Aboriginal fire brigade of Arnhem Land and if reducing wildfires will count in the emerging carbon market.
