11. Hacking for Humanity SERIOUS INPUT REQUIRED - Introduced by Karen Katz who is on the Board for Girls in Tech, a not for profit that exists to support in technology to network, grow and learn. - Girls in Tech put on an event every year called Hacking for Humanity to support charities which can use technology as a solution or support to achieve their goals. - This year, Hacking for Humanity is targeting charities who support the homeless. - Given so many of the women and children impact supports often end up homeless, Karen thought we might be interested in having one of their teams work on something for us. - It costs us nothing but our time to brief the team at the beginning of the weekend hack and then come and see the results at the end, with maybe some questions in between. - Definite outcome = solution to one of our ‘problems’ - Possible financial outcome = $2k if we’re the winning charity!! - Please see attached for more details: - What’s our problem statement? IMPORTANT

A problem statement is the problem that the team of hackers will attempt to solve for you - be it helping to provide you with an idea on streamlining workflows or creating a platform to enhance your digital presence or even creating a Marketing strategy. Jamuna Raj is happy to help flesh out our ‘problem’ – let’s not miss this opportunity!

Overview

Hacking for Humanity

The Girls in Tech Hackathon is a code-a-thon where developers, designers, scientists, students, entrepreneurs and educators gather to collaborate on projects including applications, software, hardware, data visualization and platform solutions. This event gives participants the chance to flex their skills, work with fellow hackers, and learn something new, such as a programming language or API. Mentors are present to guide the attendees on the platform or technology chosen for the event.

Why do a hackathon?Purpose: Hackathons exist to enable the rapid prototyping of a complex problem and provide a range of solutions within a short period. By choosing to hack for humanity, we’ll help transform charities through tech, while also engaging women in innovation and entrepreneurship within our tech ecosystem. Form a team, solve a problem, create something awesome, present it to the audience and win prizes!

Audience: Charities, developers, product managers, designers, UXers, sales and marketing professionals.

Objective: Create an environment where women can both network and create through producing a stimulating hack idea.

Key messages:

■ An inclusive event for women who want to attend a hackathon and make a meaningful contribution to our community.

■ Know someone who loves to problem solve? Maybe you’ve worked with them before, and worked well? Bring them along!

Ideal:

Friday, Oct 5 - 6-9pm (we will need a rep to introduce your organisation to the teams)Saturday, Oct 13 - 10am - 1pmSunday, Oct 14 - 11am - end

Email Jamuna directly if you need to be here at extra times!

It is important to remember that the teams must produce the concept and the solution themselves, this is the purpose of a hackathon. Tap into their creativity by giving them just the right amount of brief but not actually being involved in the team itself!

Think of your role as mentor, not hacker! This will achieve the best result.
