Abraxini and Semiothisini Species from Mongolia (Lepidoptera, Geometridae : Ennominae)*

B y A . V O J N I T S , Budapest

Abstract — Eleven species of the tribes Abrax in i and Semiothisini are shown from Mongolia; Tephrina kaszabi sp. n. , and Tephrina arenacearia mongolica ssp. n . are described. — 2 figures.

Eleven species of the tribes Abraxin i and Semiothisini have been found i n Dr . Z. K A S Z A B ' S collections f rom Mongolia. The number of specimens, w i t h special regard to some species inhabiting sztyeps, is occasionally significantly high, permit t ing the clarification of some subspecific problems and the description of new taxa.

Ent . M i t t . , 1926, 17: 423.

The subspecies, described f rom the Ussur i area, o f th is ex t remely wide ly rangi n g species has been collected apart f rom Mongol ia also i n the A m u r region, i n N o r t h China, N o r t h Korea , Manchur ia , and according to some data also i n West China and N o r t h T ibe t . I t s m a i n feature against the nominate subspecies is the near ly or ac tua l ly meet ing t h i r d and f o u r t h transverse stripes o f the forewing, the second and f o u r t h transverse stripes being usual ly broader t h a n the f i rs t and the t h i r d ones, and the basal f ie ld showing a brownish suffusion.

6. Semiothisa saburraria kenteata S T A U D I N G E R

D t . ent Z. I r is , 1896, 9 : 273.

I n view of the confusion and uncertainties concerning the separation of the diverse fo r i us, I t h ink i t justified to submit a detailed description of the subspecies on the basis of the unparalleled series now available from Mongolia.

The subspecies i n question was cited by S T A U D I N G E R in 1896 (loc. cit.) as "Macaria Intermaculata S T G R . var. Kenteata S T G R . " This statement preceded the publication of the actual description of "Intermaculata S T G R . " (D. ent. Z. I r is , 1897, 10:41), but, in any case, the specific name given by S T A U D I N G E R is a junior subjective synonym (saburraria E V E R S M A N N , 1881 = intermaculata S T A U D I N G E R , 1897). Incidentally, S T A U D I N G E R h imself wrote about saburraria Ev . (D. ent. Z. Ir is , 1897, 10:65), but relegated i t to the genus Thamnonoma, remarking, however, that the species is unkown to h im ("Mir ist diese von E V E R S M A N N nach Stücken von I rkutsk beschriebene A r t in natura unbekannt.. .").

— v g l . Zschr. Wiener E n t . Ges. 4 7 : 160), s ind — als i m Raupens tad ium au f H a l o p h y t e n lebende Tiere — einerseits auch zu eremialen Bio topen , andererseits aber an mar i t ime , halophile Pflanzengemeinschaften gebunden.

Die i m Grundp lan der Gen i t a l a rmatur der G a t t u n g Cardiestra noch ziemlich nahestehenden Genera Thargelia (vg l . Th. distincta C H R I S T , u n d fissilis C H R I S T .

Muster , klauenförmige T ib i en -fortsätze, Fühlerstruktur) als auch i n der Geni ta lmorphologie (eine ausgeprägte Tendenz zur Dissymmetr ie bei mehreren Thargelia-Arten, durch eine dissymmet-rische plattenförmige Ausb i ldung der Harpen , die auch du rch eine entsprechende U m b i l d u n g der Va lven fo rm m i t verlängerter „Extension o f sacculus" begleitet is t , v g l . S U K H A R E V A 1972) eine ganze Reihe v o n Spezialisationen aufweisen, gelten auch als Eremia l fo rmen der zentralasiatischen-turanischen Ausbrei tungszentren. Die Ga t tung Thargelia läßt sich sonst — aufgrund ihrer Gen i t a l s t ruk tu r v o n Ha-dula n u r z iemlich schwer u n d sub jek t iv trennen, obwohl die E x t r e m f o r m e n beider Genera — besonders hab i tue l l — ziemlich wei t voneinander entfernt s ind.* D ie artenreiche G a t t u n g Hadula zeigt z. T . A u c h i n der anderen, und m i t Hadula offensichtl i ch i n sehr enger Verwandschaft stehenden, artenreichen G a t t u n g Discestra läßt sich eine m i t hochgradiger Spezialisation verbundene Formenmannigfa l t igke i t beobachten, besonders i n der „Extension o f sacculus", die bei einigen A r t e n (hoplites S T G R . , mendica S T G R . , mendax S T G R . , loeffleri R E I S S E R ) beiderseits lang ausgezogen ist u n d eine ähnliche F o r m besitzt, wie jener For tsa tz gewisser Hadula-Artein, während die A r t e n der dianihi T A U S C H . - , armata S T G R . - , furca E v . - Gruppe eine, i n dieser H ins i ch t stark dissymmetrische A r m a t u r haben. A n dieser Stelle sei bemerk t , daß die G a t t u n g Discestra. aufgrund der A u s b i l d u n g des Sacculusfortsatzes auch m i t Gardepia i n Verwandtschaf t zu stehen scheint.
