    4. One of the most important places in Konya is Rumis tomb. Rumi was more commonly

known as Mevlana, and he lived during the 1200s. He was a Muslim theologian and

poet, as well as a Sufi mystic. Although he was born in Afghanistan, he moved to Konya

and eventually died there. Today there is a shrine to him at his tomb in Konya. The shrine

is a very popular place for Muslims to make a pilgrimage to. When Rumi died, hisfollowers set up the Mevlevi Order, which is very well-known today for its Sama

ceremony, which includes a distinctive whirling dance. For this reason, the order is also

known by many as the Order of the Whirling Dervishes.

    5. Konya was also put on the map for its famous Turkish carpets, which became popular in

Europe during the Renaissance. The expensive carpets were often purchased as a

status symbol and to show off the wealth of the owner.

    So, What's a Whirling Dervish?

The Mevlevi Order, or the Order of the Whirling Dervishes, was founded in Konya. The dance

that plays an important role in the practice of this Islamic denomination is a very distinctive

whirling movement, which is meant to symbolize the remembrance of God. UNESCO namedthe ceremony to its list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Tradition says the story was created by Rumi, the originator of the Mevlevi Order, after he

walked through the Konya market and heard the rhythms being beat by the hammerers in the

marketplace. He then started whirling in a circle to the rhythms he heard.
