Absolute convergence implies convergence

Definition 1 The series∑

k=1Ak is absolutely convergent if the series

∞∑

k=1

|Ak|

converges.

Thus the p-series for p = 2∞∑

k=1

1

k2

is absolutely convergent, as is the alternating series

∞∑

k=1

(−1)k−1

k2.

However, the alternating series

∞∑

k=1

(−1)k−1

k

is not absolutely convergent, even though it converges.

Theorem 1 If∑

k=1Ak is absolutely convergent, then it is convergent. In

other words, if the series of all nonnegative terms∑

k=1|Ak| converges, then

so does the series∑

k=1Ak.

1

PROOF: Note that for any k we always have Ak ≤ |Ak|, and 0 ≤ |Ak|, sothat

0 ≤ Ak + |Ak| ≤ 2|Ak|.

Now assume that∑

k=1Ak is absolutely convergent. This implies that the

series 2∑

k=1|Ak| is convergent. Now let ak = Ak + |Ak| and bk = 2|Ak|.

Then part I of the comparison theorem applies to show that the nonnegativeseries

∞∑

k=1

ak =∞∑

k=1

(Ak + |Ak|)

converges. Then∞∑

k=1

Ak =∞∑

k=1

(Ak + |Ak|) −∞∑

k=1

|Ak|

converges, since it is the difference of two convergent series. Q.E.D.

Example 1 Consider the series

∞∑

k=1

Ak =∞∑

k=1

sin k

k2.

Now |Ak| ≤ 1/k2, and by part I of the comparison theorem with bk = 1/k2

we can show that the Ak series is absolutely convergent. This proves that the

series∑

k=1

sin k

k2 must be convergent.
