A PROPER BUILDING GROWS NATURALLY, LOGICALLY, AND POETICALLY OUT OF ALL
OF ITS CONDITIONS.
Louis Sullivan
I think architecture breaks down to three things: function, as the reason for a design; form, as the design itself; and context, which pulls it all together. Form follows function, but context is equally important as function in shaping a design. Architecture is more that just structure; it impacts its surroundings, just as the surroundings impact architecture.
I feel that for a design to be successful, there needs to be a cohesive quality about the two so that they work together to compliment each other. Culture, history, topography, exisiting structure, and the nature of the site all contribute to context. I think that responsible architecture should strive to preserve the identity of the site while bringing new energy to its surroundings.

Anderson Train Station
03
This is a design for a train station on North Main Street in Anderson, SC. Although it is a small station, I wanted to evoke the same excitement and grandeur of train stations from a bygone era. By pairing traditional structure and materials with clean, simple lines, I aimed to create a design that preserved downtown Anderson’s small-town charm and evoked the past excitement for traveling.

Arches are a common element in the surrounding architecture of the site so I wanted to incorporate the traditional structure in a more exaggerated fashion.

For this project, we had to develop a scheme for a bike sharing system in Clemson, SC. I devised a program that would let people easily rent and store bikes using card access, and also provide facilities for organizations and individuals to promote and support an active lifestyle.

Act Adapt
The idea for this project was to design a small theater for performing arts majors at Clemson University. There is great need for performance spaces for these students, so to accomodate them this design offers a wide variety of possibilities from adjustable rehearsal spaces to an multi-use stage.

The theater is located at the intersection of Hwy 123 and College Ave, across from Bowman Field. It is an ideal location adjacent to Clemson’s campus because it experiences high, fluctuating energy levels and this energy was mimiced throughout the project.

Flexibility and movement were the driving forces behind the design in order to make a space that students could count on to use for whatever they needed it for.

For this project, we designed a mixed-use building at the corner of Main and Broad in Greenville, SC; the program includes a recreation center, housing, retail and commercial space, and a chapel. When planning our design, we focused on ways this building could facilitate and promote a healthy lifestyle, physically and spiritually.

This is a detail model of the bike hub (an element of our retail) and the apartment housing above. The varying shapes and sizes of each unit reveal a terracing effect that creates balconies and shade for the apartments. The idea of giving people a feeling of having their own “backyard” was an important concept in our design.

For this project, we redesigned the cul-de-sac of Fernow St on Clemson University’s Campus and incorporate an Internet Café. Using a map of the Internet as inspiration, I focused on points of interest that I felt were important nodes and expand them to create the illusion of a web.
