European Day of Languages

BE YOURBEST

Mounts Bay Academy has joined with 12 other local schools to form a Teaching School Alliance called Applied Minds. We welcomed staff from every school in the Alliance to three days of training with the inspirational primary Headteacher from Hartsholme Academy in Lincolnshire called Carl Jarvis. He was able to demonstrate engaging and motivating teaching and learning ideas with a particular focus on Project Based Learning. All the schools in the Alliance have agreed to take part in a research and development project to promote Project Based Learning (PBL) and we will be lending class sets of iPads to our Alliance partners to support this new development. This collaboration should benefit a significant number of students across West Cornwall as these new ideas start to be introduced in classrooms after half term from Redruth to Mousehole. The dining hall has just received a makeover using the Applied Minds graphics with the strapline “Adventure into Learning”.

The Academy is hosting nearly 200 Year 6 students from local primary schools for an Arctic Adventure tomorrow. The students will work in teams and undertake a variety of challenges to see if they have the skills and ingenuity to survive in the icy wastelands of the North Pole. They will be learning from the indigenous people called the Inuit who live in the areas around the North Pole and getting involved in six different activities. They will become scientists, engineers, anthropologists, linguists, athletes, artists and musicians as they visit the various challenge posts.

Best wishes

Sara DaveyAcademy Principal

The morning will begin in the Hall which has been turned into the Hudson Bay Trading Company where they will meet the chief trading honcho who will brief them on their adventure challenges. They will then go to different venues to learn about the famous explorer Bear Grylls, the life and world of a Shaman and they will meet a very special guest who has agreed to make an appearance, but it is top secret so all will be revealed in next week’s newsletter.

I look forward to an exciting week and will be avoiding tractors with large trailers on the way to work (just in case you have seen my damaged car!)

Students helped prepare for the Arctic Adventure

It will be another busy week in the Academy next week with our Open Day and Evening next Thursday 2nd October. It is an opportunity for students in Years 7 to 10 to gain hours for their Half and Full Colours Awards and we are always so proud of the students who volunteer to represent the Academy on these occasions.

BEINSPIRED

European Day of Languages

This week in the MFL department, we have been very busy promoting the European Day of Languages. Throughout the week assemblies have been delivered on the theme of Thinking Big, Going Global. We have been talking about careers involving languages and drawing attention to the fact that speaking a foreign language opens doors.

We have also been enjoying the many foods that Europe has to offer with our European food quiz. Form groups also took part in a languages quiz on Thursday, look out in next week’s newsletter for the results.

On Friday 26th September, European Day of Languages, we had a special guest speaker from GCHQ. We had many of our own students involved in this Gifted and Talented Language Day but we also welcomed lots of local schools as well as Truro and Penwith College.

A longer report on the Gifted and Talented Day will feature in next week's newsletter!

BECREATIVE

Artist of the Week

Eddy Hall in Year 11 has been creating a variety of wire structures for part of his GCSE Art work. He has been exploring how to create and manipulate three-dimensional form and has then photographed the sculptures to discover the two-dimensional effects that can be created.

Eddy is moving his project forward now to create larger wire installations.

Asylum Visit

Last night 14 Arts Award students had a most extraordinary theatrical experience at ‘The Asylum’. The Asylum is a mobile theatre under canvas that is the summer home of Kneehigh Theatre Company. This year it has been based in The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

We were met on arrival by Mike Shepherd the director of the piece we were about to see, ‘Dead Dog in a Suitcase’. He talked for half an hour explaining the process behind their art and the inspiration for this feisty, energetic, funny, violent and mesmerising rework of The Beggar’s Opera. The skill of the musicians, writer, actors, designers and puppeteers was of a very high standard. A massive thank you to Kneehigh.

Year 11 Rugby

The Year 11 Rugby team beat Helston in a 22-21 thriller on Tuesday evening. Missing star man Ed Hall the boys had to play with real togetherness and battle it out until the end. Good performances from captain Isaac, second row Dom and new boys Charlie Brown and Harlow Seed. With some good training sessions and everyone fit we hope to go as far as we can in the County Cup this year.

Girls’ Football

On Monday 22nd September, the Mounts Bay Girls U13s Football squad faced Penryn College in the 1st round of the ESFA National Cup. It was a tough game and the score does not reflect how well the girls competed and developed throughout the match.

The U13 squad will no doubt come back fighting strong next season for the National Cup campaign. These girls have the County Cup competition to look forward to as well as an array of friendlies and festivals throughout the season. Keep attending Girls Football Club girls and bring your friends, new and old faces welcome to attend. Girls Football Club is held every Tuesday after school, 3.30pm-4.30pm. For more information see Mr Lawrence or email [email protected]

We wish Penryn the very best in the next round of the competition.

Mounts Bay Academy VS Humphry Davy - Match Report

On Wednesday 24th of September both Mounts Bay's and Humphry Davy's Year 10 Rugby teams collided in the first round of the Cup. Both teams went into the match wanting to win. They were a bigger side but we weren’t going to go down without a fight. We went out on the pitch with the right mental and physical attitude to win the game.

After the first couple of minutes the first try was Mounts Bay’s. This gave us hope and we worked together exceptionally well as a team. After this there was try after try with great play from both sides.

At half time Humphry Davy still hadn't got any points on the board. By this point we were confident we were going to win, but the game isn't over till the final whistle so we kept going and scoring in style. Matthew Olds scored a brilliant try from the back foot of the twenty-two to score underneath the posts. There was a mid way scare when one of our players was sent off but it didn't put a downer on things - we kept our heads high and kept going. At this point it was the ‘survival of the fittest’ and with Humphry Davy still not having a single point they had one last push. Mounts Bay defended exceptionally well with a try-stopping tackle from Peter Williams. At this point we thought it was over and we had done all we could, but then with a blinding run from our try line Conner George stormed over their line to finish it off. With all bar one of our conversions converted Finley Wallis was sure to put it over the posts and he did. Both teams were very tired at the final whistle.

Final score 54-0. The next match is against Penryn in the next round of the Cup.

Try scorers were Alfie Hall (2), Matthew Olds (2), Conner George (2), Henry Hocking (1) and Caden Brownfield (1).
