BE YOURBEST

Best wishes

Sara DaveyAcademy Principal

This week has seen a great deal of changes to the campus here in the Academy. Our continuing programme of refurbishment will soon see the completion of the new changing room facilities that we have been working on for the last few months and we have now commenced on the programme to bring some more of the student washrooms up to date.

Our students never cease to strive for excellence and today has seen another of our amazing credit trips take place with over 15% of students gaining enough credits having the opportunity to have a day at the Eden Project. They have taken part in a number of activities including the ever popular ice skating. I am looking forward to having an “Ice Cream Party” next week with our amazing show jumping teams to celebrate their recent success.

We received notification of where our 2011 students who attended further education have progressed to this week. It was great to see so many of our students gaining places at Russell Group Universities. Russell Group Universities are acknowledged as some of the best in the world through their outstanding research and teaching, unrivalled links with businesses and a commitment to civic responsibility. They make an enormous impact on the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of the UK. It is also fantastic to see the wide range of courses that our alumni are enrolled in, it gives everyone here great pride to know that we have helped them to achieve their potential.

We have also been looking at how we will deliver our curriculum going forward and shortly we will be entering into an alliance with other like minded schools nationally (and hopefully internationally) to offer teacher training to graduates wanting a career in education. All this means that the opportunities for our students to experience even higher levels of adventurous learning is an exciting prospect for us to look forward to.

Metropolitan Maths

Miss McKenzie and Miss Leesley took a group of students to London for three days before half term to explore Maths in different contexts. The students ranged from Year 7 to Year 9 and started the trip with a shock to the system. Being at school for 6am was not the easiest thing to do!

We had a packed few days in London and visited the Science Museum, Natural History Museum, The London Eye, Houses of Parliament and Bletchley Park.

The London Eye offered spectacular views over London and allowed the students to see the wide range of structures used from old buildings to newer buildings like the Shard and the London Eye itself.

The tour of the Houses of Parliament was such an eye opening experience. The history of the building and the business that is undertaken in the House of Commons and House of Lords was an experience not to be forgotten. Unfortunately photos were not permitted during the tour but at the end of the tour, we did get the opportunity to meet with local MP Andrew George and find out what topics were hot on the discussion board that week. It seems only the night before, they had been debating the issue of longer school days!!

Bletchley Park was a sensational way to end the visit with a tour of the Park where civilians worked day and night trying to decode intercepted messages. We got to see the Tunny and Colossus which were machines invented to help crack the enigma codes at a much faster speed than using good old pen and paper. The day ended with the students cracking some codes and getting to use the enigma machine itself.

Book of the Month - Divergent

The Divergent Trilogy is written by the talented Veronica Roth, and is intended for teens over 13. It is set in a dystopian Chicago, a city surrounded by a high fence, where society is divided into five factions: Abnegation for the selfless, Candor for the honest, Amity for the peaceful, Dauntless for the brave, and Erudite for the knowledgeable. Everyone, when they turn 16, must choose a new faction, or remain in the one they have been raised in.

This enthralling trilogy follows Beatrice Prior (Tris), a 16 year who has an aptitude for not one, but three factions. She is different. She is 'Divergent'. However, it's not safe to be Divergent and Tris must hide it, as there are dark forces and people at work, who will stop at nothing to protect the secret that her original faction hides. Tris embarks on a captivating journey to unearth the secret kept from the factions, protect herself from those who threaten to harm her for her divergence, and discover what lies outside the fence.....

The trilogy combines science fiction; dystopia, romance and action for a story that will stay with you long after you read it. It is filled with plot twists and unforeseen turns, and the mind-blowing ending had me sobbing!

I would totally recommend it to anybody; girl or boy, catch the highly infectious Divergent bug! Make sure you read it in time for the film adaption (out March 2014).

Music Maestros

Three more students from the Senior Music Institute have passed their Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Copper Music Medals. Oscar Clive, Molly Davey and Siena Hoadley play the trumpet, clarinet and flute. Over 80% of the Senior Institute have now achieved this award and many students from the Junior Institute are currently preparing to take the test. The Concert Band now have many pieces in their repertoire including Mission Impossible, Chariots of Fire and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Half Term Workers

A group of Years 9 and 11 Textile and Product Design students gave up a day of their holiday to come into school last Friday during half term. It was a hugely successful day during which Mrs Evans and Mrs Forster said they were very proud of all the students that showed huge commitment and effort.

Doing a fast track GCSE in a year is a big challenge for the Year 9 students and all these students have risen to the occasion. Many of the Textile students started making their final product. The Product Design students worked hard on folder work.

Well done to all of you from Mrs Evans and Mrs Forster.

Art in Perspective

In preparation of their final major project, Year 10 Art students have been studying the rules of perspective and applying this knowledge to their own observational drawings. Students used their iPads to capture some inspiring viewpoints at various locations around the school before returning to the warmth inside to master the Art of Drawing.

The main corridor provided the source of inspiration and was a fantastic place to observe the Vanishing point and create well observed, mathematical and proportional sketches.

Students will be furthering their studies by analysing the work of artists Vermeer and Canaletto before developing their own independent project ideas.

We are now half way through the academic year and the Arts Award programme at Mounts Bay is in full flow. We currently have 55 Bronze, 40 Silver and 10 Gold students developing their arts practice, reviewing events, meeting professionals and taking on exciting leadership projects within the Academy and into the local community. The Cube, official home of the Arts Award at MBA is now a bustling social centre for all the students every break, lunch and after school. The space is available for them to come and work on their portfolios, get involved in artistic MixX clubs and to chat to one of our staff arts award advisors.

The deadline for completion of Bronze is the week after the Easter holidays, but even at this early stage we already have six students who have completed their awards and have now moved on to Silver. To celebrate this achievement we have decided that the first 20 Bronze, and the first 10 Silver to complete their portfolios will all receive a prize!

So get going, and remember you can get help and support at anytime from Luke New, Miss Fisher, Mr Townsend, Miss Tooby and Miss Wills. Report by Luke New

Showjumping

On Sunday 23rd February two teams from Mounts Bay Academy travelled to Resparveth Equestrian Centre at Grampound Road to compete in the County showjumping competition.

The open team consisted of Tean Manser, Shea Cornish, Lucy Grant and Poppy Burford. All of whom arrived looking smart and polished in Academy colours raring to compete. After a tack and turnout inspection there were two rounds of jumping with the open team finishing on a final score of four faults. This gave the team a respectable fourth place overall, with Shea jumping another round for the individual competition in which he finished second place, only being beaten to first place by a mere one second. The team also received a second placing for the tack and turnout competition.

Shortly after the open competition finished it was the turn of the Academy’s novice team consisting of Phoebe Lagor, Charlotte Blewett-Harris, Ellie Ringwood and Rosie Tuckett. Firstly, we must say a massive thank you to Rosie’s dad Graham Tuckett, for sponsoring the entry of the novice team. Graham, who is a local farrier, kindly offered to sponsor the team and is pictured below with the competitors. The novice team jumping got underway, after a slight delay, with all jumping clear in the first round; something not many other schools achieved. The second round saw more clears for our team which meant we finished on a clean score sheet. With the competition drawing to a close after an extremely long day we were all eagerly awaiting the results. Announced in reverse order the excitement from the team was growing – success – first place announced as Mounts Bay Academy! Well done to the novice team. Charlotte and Phoebe also received individual placings sixth and fifth respectively.

A great, albeit long, day out for all involved. Again a massive thanks to parents for transporting and supporting, and also to the WHPC for running the event. I’m again very proud of our showjumpers’ achievements, commitment and enthusiasm, who received high praise from organisers for their good manners and teamwork.

Girls’ Cricket Tournament

On Thursday 27th February, the U15 Girls Cricket team played in a series of exciting matches against other local schools as part of the Indoor Cricket Tournament. This event was hosted by Mounts Bay, in the Dome. The competing schools included: Hayle, Humphry Davy, Cape Cornwall, and ourselves. Each game was played in two halves, with one team batting and the opposition fielding; this would then be rotated after six overs had been completed.

Out of the three matches played, two were won by Mounts Bay, against Humphry Davy and Hayle; with the loss only by two runs, to Cape Cornwall. Hayle was beaten by the Mounts Bay

team by over twenty runs, and Humphry Davy was beaten by a considerable amount also.

The first game between Mounts Bay and Cape Cornwall was extremely close, with only two runs between the final score. The opposition were caught out, along with some fantastic runs made.

The next game was against Hayle. In this game, the batswomen excelled themselves resulting in an outstanding lead. When it was Hayle's chance to bat, the bowling standard was exceptional - using fast bowls and consequently leading Mounts Bay to success.

The final game was against Humphry Davy - a team made up of students older than the Mounts Bay girls. Nevertheless, Mounts Bay still batted, fielded and bowled their way to success again. With a number of well-judged bowls and strong hits, the game ended with Mounts Bay gaining another win!

After the remaining games were played between the visiting schools, the results were calculated. Overall the Mounts Bay team came second, closely following Cape Cornwall.Every participant contributed very well to the competition making the standard of play very high. A number of outstanding performances occurred and every player should feel very proud.

Thank you to Miss Rooth, Keeleigh Brownfield and other PE staff for supporting us throughout the event.

BEA SPORTS LEADER

Sports Leaders are a valued asset at the Academy. They not only help to run sports fixtures, showing their outstanding leadership qualities, but they are also a huge help within the PE Department relieving some of the pressure on the PE staff during events such as Year 6 induction days. Being a Sports Leader is a rewarding role which, in the end, results in a qualification that can then be a part of a college, university or job application, to make you stand out. Sports Leaders get the opportunity to help the local community and we are unique in offering this course. You

are able to start the course in Year 10. Last year there were over 25 new Sports Leaders in Year 10. So far we have 10 qualified Year 11s who last year helped the Year 10s on the Year 6 induction day and running other events. As part of the qualification you can also gain leadership qualifications such as cricket or handball coach or referee.

Some of the PE staff explained to us how important the Leaders are in helping the Academy, "Sports Leaders are invaluable to the PE department. I genuinely couldn't run all the Netball, Cricket, Rounders and Fitness clubs without them. They are responsible and motivated young people who LOVE all sports. The Leaders assist with officiating, coaching and generally helping me stay organised with all the team sheets and write-ups. All the PE staff benefit greatly from their assistance all year round." - Miss Rooth

"My thought is the fact that the Sports Leaders are seen as role models for all students in terms of taking responsibility/interest above and beyond the norm. The obvious enjoyment participants gain from the opportunities provided by the Leaders goes a long way to promoting sport and healthy lifestyles." - Mrs Trevail

"Sports Leaders allow young people to develop their self-confidence and belief in their own abilities. This confidence can be transferred across all subjects." - Mr Strong

As you can see above, being a Sports Leader can help benefit other subjects as your confidence grows. However, it is not only the Sports Leaders who grow as people, the students who are helped by Sports Leaders are also benefited. They are given the motivation to do well and this can be transferred to all other subjects.

Hollie Empson a Year 10 Sports Leader said, "I think Sports Leaders is a good course to join and take part in. You get to go to primary schools and help the younger children with performing new skills but also involve them in sports they may not have done before and form bonds with them.”

Overall the Sports Leaders’ qualification is highly recommended by all the participating students and of course it is very useful if you are sporty or if you wish to do something different than all academic subjects. It gives you a chance to not only help the Academy and the local community but benefit yourself in the future by learning new and exciting things. It also improves the Sports Leader’s confidence and awareness of other people taking part in sport under different circumstances. So if you are thinking about becoming a Sports Leader do not hesitate, as it is a very worthwhile qualification!

Year 8 Football

On 25th February Mounts Bay Year 8 Football team travelled to Truro School to face them in the quarter-finals of the County Cup.

The match kicked off well with Mounts Bay sending a defence-splitting pass through putting us in on goal. It forced their keeper to react very quickly to Jack Sharp’s near post shot. After a few minutes Truro grabbed hold of possession and their striker ran onto a lumped up ball sent by their midfield and scored. The home side were already leading after a couple of minutes. We kicked off and the same happened, they simply whacked the ball upfield and scored again. Unfortunately MBA conceded two more goals before half-time.

The whistle blew to signal the second-half which suited us slightly better than the first . The opposition scored their fifth goal of the game but we kept going. We finally got a bit of luck when Ben Chapman scored the best goal of the match. He hit a shot from the outside of the box and it flew to the top right hand corner. The leading team scored three more goals to finish the game 7-1 to them. We were all gutted and very aware of our huge defeat. Many thanks to Mr Cadman and Mr Veal for all their support and let's hope next year we can regain our title.

Mariama Mae Cake Sale

£150 was raised at a cake sale held on Valentine’s Day in aid of the Mariama Mae pre-school in Gambia. The pre-school was set up by Penwith resident Ali Calvert and it is funded solely by donations. Three MBA students, Harriet Radford, Matilda Black and Olivia Hewett, set up the Porridge Plan which raises money to pay for every child at the pre-school to have a nutritious breakfast when they arrive every morning. The girls have pledged to raise £60 a month. They are very grateful for all contributions of cakes from staff, students and parents and to everyone who bought cakes on the day.
