Introduction

To commemorate the 400th

anniversary of Champlain and thefirst Acadian settlement on ÎleSainte-Croix in 1604, the HalifaxPublic Libraries e-Branch ispleased to introduce this newresource list about Acadia and theAcadians.

For more than four hundred years,Acadians past and present havemade significant contributions tothe culture, language and historyof the Maritimes. Between 1605-1775, their way of life, languageand culture spread from a smallFrench settlement at Port Royal,to villages and communitiesthroughout Nova Scotia, NewBrunswick, and Prince EdwardIsland. Acadians prospered untiltensions between the British andFrench governments forced theminto exile to the United States, Prince Edward Island, northern New Brunswick, or back to

France. Years later, manyAcadians returned to theirMaritime homeland andestablished a community spiritand culture that thrives to this day.

Acadia and the Acadianscontains selected nonfictionFrench and English materials inthe Halifax Public Librariescollection. Check the onlinecatalogue to search for Englishtranslations of French titles.

Journal articles from Acadiensis,Dalhousie Review and The NovaScotia Historical Quarterly arealso included.
