Perceive with the eyes Trailing by 12 points heading into the final stanza, the Houghton Lake High School girls varsity basketball team’s comeback against Farwell fell short as the Bobcats fell to the Eagles 47-44 Jan. 24 at HLHS. “Once again, coming out flat killed us,” Houghton Lake Coach Angie Dalak said. “The first half, we were not there.” Farwell opened the game red hot out- scoring the Bobcats 17-6 in the opening eight minutes. The Bobcats closed the gap in the second outscoring the Eagles 9-7 to trail 24-15 at halftime. The Eagles extended their lead in the third quarter as they led 36-24 with eight minutes to play. Houghton Lake would get the game to within two points in the final stanza but the comeback would fall short as the Eagles took the JPC contest. “We came alive and had some more intensity in the second half, especially the fourth quarter, but it was just too late,” Dalak reported. She noted that her squad had the game to within a point with 1:09 left to play following a foul shot by Sarah Garrett, but an untimely foul sent the Eagles to the line where they made a free throw. Leading Houghton Lake in scoring was Garrett who had 14 points includ- ing shooting 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Other scorers included Hailee Akin who had 12 points and was 5-of-8 from the floor, Gill Carroll who had seven points, Alee Winkler who had six points and Maddee Winkler who had three points. Also chipping in offensively was Carroll who had four assists. Maddee Winkler led the squad in re- bounds with eight while Alee Winkler had six, Callee Akin had five and Garrett and Christina Penfield had four each. Defensively Maddee Winkler had five steals and three blocks and Carroll had three steals. “It was frustrating all around,” Dalak reported. “The non-aggressive play we consistently start with is a problem.” The Bobcats (2-12 overall; 2-8 JPC) were scheduled to travel to Meridian Tuesday night. ’Cats come up short against Farwell Houghton Lake’s Sarah Garrett (4) is fouled by Far- well’s Sydney Hurley (11) as she takes the ball up for a shot during the squads’ Jack Pine Conference contest Jan. 24 at HLHS. Garrett led the Bobcats in the loss with 14 points, including 8-of-10 free throw shooting. (Photo by Eric Hamp) GOING UP STRONG With one minute remaining and the Bobcats down by a point, sophomore Nathan Shavalia stepped up and scored five of the game’s last seven points lift- ing the Bobcats to a 59-57 victory Jan. 25 at Farwell. Trailing 55-54 with a minute remain- ing in the Jack Pine Conference game, Shavalia intercepted a Farwell pass and drove the length of the court for a layup to put the Bobcats ahead 56-54. On the next possession, the Bobcats defense forced a turnover and after break- ing the Eagles trap the ball was put into Shavalia’s hands before he was fouled. On his trip to the free throw line, he sank both shots and the ’Cats led 58-54. After a missed shot by the Eagles, Shavalia again secured possession and was fouled and sent to the line. He split the pair and the Bobcats led 59-55. As time ran out on the clock, Far- well’s Walter Mosby scored on a layup but it was not enough as the Bobcats escaped with the Jack Pine Conference victory. The first quarter saw the Eagles come out of the starting blocks to score 13 points while the Bobcats scored just seven. Both squads scored a mirror image 13 points in the second quarter as the Eagles led 25-20 at halftime. In the third frame both squads again matched each other scoring 20 points each as the Eagles led by five points, 45- 40, with eight minutes remaining. In the final frame the Bobcats out- scored Farwell on their way to the league victory. “Our defense was embarrassing to- night,” Bobcat Coach Jeff Goodwin said. “There is not a single guy on this team that can say they put forth 100% on the defensive side of the ball. That stings because that is a direct reflection on me. I did not have us prepared to play tonight.” Shavalia led the squad with a double- double performance scoring 20 points and nabbing 12 rebounds. Other leading scorers included Jared Dull and Tyler Sluck with 12 points each, Billy Rhodes with seven points, Michael Ignat with four points and Ricky Press and Matt Muirhead with two points each. “We are starting to make some strides offensively,” Goodwin reported. “Na- than Shavalia has seemed to figure it out. He has reeled off four straight double- digit games. Jared Dull is scoring well in transition. Unfortunately, as our offense is improving, our defense is regressing.” Others pulling down rebounds includ- ed Sluck with seven, Rhodes and Ignat with six each, Muirhead with five, Dull with three and Press, Kevin Stefankie- wicz and Jon Vaughn with one each. Defensively the Bobcats were led by Shavalia who had four blocks and four steals. Other performers included Muir- head with three steals and a block, Ignat with four blocks, Dull with three steals and Brett Rowley, Press and Sluck with a steal each. “I will take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day,” Goodwin said. “Any time you get a road win on a Friday night in the JPC it is a good thing.” As a team the Bobcats shot just 14- of-35 from the free throw line and turned the ball over 22 times. “[14-of-35] from the free throw line is not going to get it done,” Goodwin said. “It is a small miracle that we are leaving here with a win.” “We can not use experience as a crutch anymore,” he added. “We are halfway into the season. Our road per- formances have not been good, but we escaped with a win. We are going to need much more focus moving forward.” With the victory the Bobcats stand at 5-4 on the season and 5-3 in league play. They hosted Meridian last (Wednes- day) night after the Resorter went to the press. They will travel to Gladwin tomorrow (Friday) night for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Flying G’s. Addition In a story last week regarding Hough- ton Lake’s win over Harrison, Kevin Ste- fankiewicz’s four points were ommitted from the story. The senior had two field goals in the contest. Trailing by 12 points heading into the final stanza, the Houghton Lake High School girls varsity basketball team’s comeback against Farwell fell short as the Bobcats fell to the Eagles 47-44 Jan. 24 at HLHS.

“Once again, coming out flat killed us,” Houghton Lake Coach Angie Dalak said. “The first half, we were not there.”

Farwell opened the game red hot out-scoring the Bobcats 17-6 in the opening eight minutes.

The Bobcats closed the gap in the second outscoring the Eagles 9-7 to trail 24-15 at halftime.

The Eagles extended their lead in the third quarter as they led 36-24 with eight minutes to play.

Houghton Lake would get the game

to within two points in the final stanza but the comeback would fall short as the Eagles took the JPC contest.

Leading Houghton Lake in scoring was Garrett who had 14 points includ-ing shooting 8-of-10 from the free throw line.

Other scorers included Hailee Akin who had 12 points and was 5-of-8 from the floor, Gill Carroll who had seven

points, Alee Winkler who had six points and Maddee Winkler who had three points.

Also chipping in offensively was Carroll who had four assists.

Maddee Winkler led the squad in re-bounds with eight while Alee Winkler had six, Callee Akin had five and Garrett and Christina Penfield had four each.

Defensively Maddee Winkler had five steals and three blocks and Carroll had three steals.

“It was frustrating all around,” Dalak reported. “The non-aggressive play we consistently start with is a problem.”

The Bobcats (2-12 overall; 2-8 JPC) were scheduled to travel to Meridian Tuesday night.

GOING UP STRONG

With one minute remaining and the Bobcats down by a point, sophomore Nathan Shavalia stepped up and scored five of the game’s last seven points lift-ing the Bobcats to a 59-57 victory Jan. 25 at Farwell.

Trailing 55-54 with a minute remain-ing in the Jack Pine Conference game, Shavalia intercepted a Farwell pass and drove the length of the court for a layup to put the Bobcats ahead 56-54.

On the next possession, the Bobcats defense forced a turnover and after break-ing the Eagles trap the ball was put into Shavalia’s hands before he was fouled. On his trip to the free throw line, he sank both shots and the ’Cats led 58-54.

After a missed shot by the Eagles, Shavalia again secured possession and was fouled and sent to the line. He split the pair and the Bobcats led 59-55.

As time ran out on the clock, Far-well’s Walter Mosby scored on a layup but it was not enough as the Bobcats escaped with the Jack Pine Conference victory.

The first quarter saw the Eagles come out of the starting blocks to score 13 points while the Bobcats scored just seven.

Both squads scored a mirror image 13 points in the second quarter as the Eagles led 25-20 at halftime.

In the third frame both squads again matched each other scoring 20 points each as the Eagles led by five points, 45-40, with eight minutes remaining.

In the final frame the Bobcats out-scored Farwell on their way to the league victory.

“Our defense was embarrassing to-

night,” Bobcat Coach Jeff Goodwin said. “There is not a single guy on this team that can say they put forth 100% on the defensive side of the ball. That stings because that is a direct reflection on me. I did not have us prepared to play tonight.”

Shavalia led the squad with a double-double performance scoring 20 points and nabbing 12 rebounds.

Other leading scorers included Jared Dull and Tyler Sluck with 12 points each, Billy Rhodes with seven points, Michael Ignat with four points and Ricky Press and Matt Muirhead with two points each.

“We are starting to make some strides offensively,” Goodwin reported. “Na-than Shavalia has seemed to figure it out. He has reeled off four straight double-digit games. Jared Dull is scoring well in transition. Unfortunately, as our offense is improving, our defense is regressing.”

Others pulling down rebounds includ-ed Sluck with seven, Rhodes and Ignat with six each, Muirhead with five, Dull with three and Press, Kevin Stefankie-wicz and Jon Vaughn with one each.

Defensively the Bobcats were led by Shavalia who had four blocks and four steals. Other performers included Muir-head with three steals and a block, Ignat with four blocks, Dull with three steals and Brett Rowley, Press and Sluck with a steal each.

“I will take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day,” Goodwin said. “Any time you get a road win on a Friday night in the JPC it is a good thing.”

As a team the Bobcats shot just 14-of-35 from the free throw line and turned

the ball over 22 times.“[14-of-35] from the free throw line

is not going to get it done,” Goodwin said. “It is a small miracle that we are leaving here with a win.”

“We can not use experience as a crutch anymore,” he added. “We are halfway into the season. Our road per-formances have not been good, but we escaped with a win. We are going to need much more focus moving forward.”

With the victory the Bobcats stand at 5-4 on the season and 5-3 in league play.
