Hardware Scaleup provides three essential services:

INSIGHT FOR PROPER PLANNING

The program starts with an understanding of the overall manufacturing process, and the ten stages that lead to manufacturing maturity. You’ll then develop a tailored roadmap for creating manufacturing

capabilities for your clean technology hardware. The roadmap is based on a Manufacturing Management Standard, called Manufacturing Readiness Levels, or MRL. Similar to Technology Readiness Levels, this methodology gives you:

• Insight into specific areas that require attention and resources for you to plan appropriately, and achieve milestones that move your company to the next manufacturing readiness level

• The ability to thoroughly assess, manage and mitigate risks in each stage

• An understanding of cost and schedule, and its impact

• A common language for working effectively with manufacturers, contractors and suppliers

OVERSIGHT FOR ONGOING PROGRESS

While MRL provides the tool and insight for proper planning, hands-on support delivers the oversight and instruction to keep you moving on your path to technology commercialization.

• A dedicated mentor will work with you each week to review your plans, identify potential manufacturing obstacles, and provide recommendations

• Instructional sessions will be provided regularly throughout the program to help you strengthen all aspects of your business

• The Hardware Scaleup Accountability Board will meet with you once a month. This objective review ensures your team and mentor is on the right track, and has thought of everything that could impact resources, time and money. If needed, the board will recommend additional resources or program exit if your startup isn’t benefiting from the program.

LINE OF SIGHT FOR OPTIMUM RESOURCES

New York State has a deep pool of manufacturers, contractors, material suppliers and investors. But finding the right resources for your startup can be challenging, especially if they’ll have to invest in designing new manufacturing and compliance capabilities to produce your hardware.

Hardware Scaleup minimizes the legwork in finding the right people by giving you visibility and access to a network of committed partners who can help manufacture and finance the mass production of your technology, making it feasible to produce your products here locally.

It also identifies additional funding sources—such as NYSERDA Cleantech Incubator Ignition Grants and Nextcorps’ Manufacturing Extension Program—to help offset manufacturing costs, if specific criterion is met.

PARTICIPATION CRITERIA

Hardware Scaleup is a competitive, cohort-based program. To qualify, you must:

• Be a clean energy hardware entrepreneur residing in New York State

• Have a prototype product that is at Technology Readiness Level 3 or above

• Have financial resources to initiate manufacturing readiness efforts, with at least $100,000 allocated to scaling production
