The concept for this Guide to Natural Refrigerants at the 2015 AHR Expo is to connect forward-thinking customers to some of the most advanced companies displaying natural refrigerant technologies and services at the show.

Our company, shecco, as the leading publisher of worldwide news for CO2, ammonia, hydrocarbons and water-based solutions in HVAC&R, wanted to offer participants a simple tool to be able to easily identify these companies and their products within the large exhibition halls.

ABOUT NATURAL REFRIGERANTSAs a general differentiation, “natural refrigerants” are substances that exist naturally in the environment, while “non-natural refrigerants” or “synthetic refrigerants” are man-made chemicals, not naturally occurring in the environment . The precision of the term “natural refrigerants” is sometimes debated, given that to be used as refrigerants, ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrocarbons also undergo an industrial purification and manufacturing process .

However, today there is a well-established distinction between substances whose chem-ical properties and safety aspects have been studied in their entirety and those fluorinated gases which, given their chemical complexity and comparatively short period of usage, have confirmed and/or unknown negative effects on ozone depletion, global warming and eco-logical safety, and therefore, are subject to continued debate.

The most commonly used natural refrigerants today are ammonia (NH3 / R717), carbon diox-ide (CO2 / R744), and hydrocarbons (HCs), such as propane (R290), iso-butane (R600a), and propylene, also known as propene (R1270).

Mixtures of ammonia and dimethyl ether (R723) have been developed, as well as vari-ous hydrocarbon blends with optimized perfor-mance and safety properties (isobutane/ pro-pane; R441 etc.). Water and air are also used, to a lesser extent, for example in adsorption chillers and deep-freezing applications.

In addition to their wide availability, non toxicity, non-flammability and unbeatable environmental credentials, water and air have shifted into the focus of R&D activities. Natural refrigerants no longer in use are sulfur dioxide (SO2) and methyl chloride (CH3Cl).

CARBON DIOXIDE (ODP= 0; GWP= 1)

Carbon dioxide (chemical symbol CO2, refrig-erant designation R744) is colorless, odorless and heavier than air. With a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1, CO2 is the reference value for comparing a refrigerant’s direct impact on global warming.

Carbon dioxide carries an A1 safety

classification (the same as most fluorocarbon refrigerants), indicating that it has low toxicity and is non-flammable. CO2 as a refrigerant is sourced as a by-product from a number of production methods. Although it is non-toxic, if enough carbon dioxide builds up in an en-closed space, it will begin to displace oxygen. Over a certain period of time, this can cause asphyxiation of those present. With a long atmospheric lifetime, CO2 does not lead to any by-product formation or decay products with serious environmental impact.

When used as a refrigerant, carbon dioxide typically operates at a higher pressure than flu-orocarbons and other refrigerants. While this presents some design challenges, they can be overcome in systems designed specifically to use carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is com-patible with some, but not all, commonly used refrigeration system lubricants. In particular, it is not suited for use with polyol ester (POE) and poly vinyl ether (PVE) lubricants and it only has limited applications with poly alkaline gly-col (PAG) lubricants. It is generally regarded as a inexpensive and easily available refrigerant.

AMMONIA (ODP= 0; GWP= 0)

Ammonia (chemical symbol NH3, refrigerant designation R717) is a colorless gas at atmo-spheric pressure. With zero ozone depletion and global warming potential, as well as a short atmospheric lifetime, it does not form any by-products or decomposition products with negative environmental impact. It is com-patible with some, but not all, commonly used refrigeration system lubricants. In particular, it is not suited for use with polyol ester (POE) and poly vinyl ether (PVE) lubricants, and it only has limited applications with poly alkylene glycol (PAG) lubricants.

Despite its undisputed energy efficiency bene-fits, the use of ammonia is restricted in certain applications and geographic regions, due to its toxicity and flammability. As a result, R717 is effectively prohibited from use inside occupied spaces but can be used in unoccupied areas or outside.

However, many advances have been made in recent years to minimize risks for human health, particularly for ammonia installations in populated areas. These advances include using ammonia in conjunction with other refrigerants, such as in secondary systems, in order to reduce and isolate an ammonia charge, using advanced safety equipment, deploying containment casings, or using am-monia absorption systems.

It is important to note that ammonia has a strong odor, making leaks easy to detect. The additional safety equipment required does increase costs; however, manufacturers claim that operational energy and maintenance savings potentially outweigh the higher initial outlay in the long run.

HYDROCARBONS (ODP= 0; GWP< 4)

With zero ozone depleting characteristics and an ultra-low global warming impact, the group of hydrocarbons (HCs) does not form any by-products or decomposition products in the atmosphere.

HC refrigerants can be applied either in sys-tems designed specifically for their use, or as replacements in a system designed for a fluorocarbon refrigerant, making them a cost-competitive solution, and optimal for developing countries. If a hydrocarbon refrig-erant is to be used in a system designed for a

different refrigerant, it should be noted that some modifications are probably required to ensure compatibility. Lubricant compatibility and the issues associated with hydrocar-bons’ flammability have to be addressed. However, the greatest potential for hydrocar-bon refrigerants lies in new systems.

Hydrocarbon refrigerants are flammable and, as a result, carry an A3 safety classification, which means they have a low toxicity but are in the higher range of flammability. HCs are often subject to stricter safety requirements concerning the quantities permitted in occu-pied spaces.

Hydrocarbon refrigerants are fully compati-ble with almost all lubricants commonly used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. One major exception to this rule is lubricants containing silicone and silicate (additives which are commonly used as antifoaming agents).

WATER (ODP= 0; GWP= 0)

Water (chemical symbol H2O, refrigerant des-ignation R718) is one of the oldest refriger-ants used for refrigeration applications. Also known as dihydrogen monoxide, water or wa-ter vapor is one of the Earth’s most abundant elements. Water has been extensively used as a process fluid (distillation, drying pro-cesses), as a heat transfer or energy storage medium (central heating, system cooling, ice storage systems) and as a working fluid in the Rankine power generation cycle. R718 is an environmentally safe refrigerant with zero ozone depletion potential and zero global

warming potential. It is odorless, colorless, non-toxic, non-flammable, non-explosive, easily available, and it is the cheapest refrigerant.

In refrigeration applications, water requires state-of-the-art technology. Its use as a refrigerant has been mostly limited to com-pression chillers with steam injection com-pressors, absorption systems built around a binary fluid comprised of lithium bromide as the absorbent and adsorption systems using water as the refrigerant and the mineral zeo-lite as the adsorber.

From an environmental and thermodynamic point of view, water is an ideal refrigerant for applications above 0°C. R718 has a higher latent heat of evaporation (2,270kJ/ kg) than other natural refrigerants. R718 absorbs significantly larger amounts of energy, in the form of heat, during a change of phase from liquid to gas, without a change in tem-perature. An obvious limitation is the high freezing rate at atmospheric pressure. Water leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals. Water is more reactive than other refrigerants and choosing the right materials for the R718 system during the design phase requires special attention.

AIR (ODP= 0; GWP= 0)

Air (refrigerant designation R729) is a re-frigerant that is environmentally benign, inexpensive, totally safe and non-toxic. Environmental concerns about ozone deple-tion, global warming, and increasingly strin-gent legislation have renewed the interest in

alternative refrigeration technology globally. However, the use of air cycle refrigeration systems is not new. It was used on refriger-ated cargo ships around the turn of the last century.

Air cycle refrigeration works on the reverse Brayton or Joule cycle. Air as a refrigerant does not undergo phase change (condensa-tion/evaporation) at the temperature levels encountered in conventional refrigeration applications. The COP value of air is low be-cause of its light weight, but air cycle cooling systems can provide relatively high tempera-ture heat recovery without the efficiency setback experienced by vapor compression systems. Air cycle units, compared to va-por-compression units, can also produce a much higher temperature difference between the hot and cold sides. As a result, very cold air can be produced for near-cryogenic pro-cesses. The performance of an air cycle unit does not deteriorate as much as that of a va-por-compression unit when operating away from its design point.

When operating in a refrigeration cycle, an air cycle unit can also produce heat at a useful temperature. Air has been used commer-cially for aircraft cooling for a long time. In spite of the low COP, air is used because of the specific operating conditions of aircraft (e.g., availability of compressed air and ram effect) and stringent specifications (e.g., low weight, small size, absolute safety, zero toxicity, etc.). Air has also been used as a refrigerant for residential and automobile air conditioning and cooling. In some refrigera-tion plants, air is used in the quick freezing of food products.

Based on a high-strength copper alloy which has already been extensively used in Europe, the K65 system is suitable for applica-tions operating at pressures up to 120 bar (1750 PSI).

How easy is it to install and work with the K65 system?K65 has excellent processing properties, which are similar to those of copper. The tubes can be brazed to K65 fittings without the need for welding, as used with alternatives including stainless steel.

Is the K65 system covered by warranty?K65 fittings, by Conex Bänninger and tubes by Wieland, are available under a joint system guarantee that includes CO2 applications up to 120 bar (1750 PSI).

Is the K65 system officially marked?Components of the K65 system can be clearly identified at all times with the tube marked with “Wieland K65 120 bar” and fittings marked with a green stamp and “>B< K65 120 bar”.

Where is the K65 system available?Stock holding facilities are currently being established in North America, during the course of 2015 to support the demand for K65 in the USA. The K65 tube system will be available to wholesalers from early 2015. We are already in the process of ensuring the products are tested to local regulations UL 207 and CSA C22.2.

What influence have regulations either in the US or in other regions (i.e. EU F-Gas regulation) had on your business?Several of our customers are international companies. They are seeing the effects of the F-Gas regulation, particularly in Europe, and we anticipate similar changes in the US.

What impact do your products have on customers that may already be utilizing a traditional ammonia system?There is a growing trend in the industrial ammonia refrigeration industry to reduce refrigerant charge. These packaged chillers offer a very low refrigerant charge to TR ratio and utilize secondary refrigerants to provide cooling for process loads. Secondary refrigerants keep the ammonia isolated to the machine room reducing the overall risk to the facility. Low refrigerant charges reduce the cost of risk management.

What are your key product and service features and how do they help end users save money?The world’s first Multi-Function Two Stage Transcritical CO2 System with Parallel Compression (MFTSCCO2SPC) we designed has now been operating for nearly four years with amazing energy saving benefits, including gas, and reduction in emissions, both direct and indirect.

In 2010 we were given the opportunity to implement our ideas on CO2 refrigeration when the Australian Federal Government provided $500,000.00 (50%) funding for a MFTSCCO2SPC which replaced 22 existing CFC, HCFC and HFC refrigeration and electrical heating systems.

We offer a detailed design service for ammonia and CO2 refrigeration. We have extensive experience in the design and construction of medium to large custom designed and built ammonia refrigeration systems for the food processing industries. At last count we had been involved in nearly 900 projects since 1966, mostly in the meat packing industry.

Where are your services and product available?We have extensive experience providing industrial refrigeration consulting engineering services in the USA and Asia since 1982. We will continue to offer these services.

We are looking for agents to handle our evaporative condensers in all parts of the world for all refrigerants, including as hybrids for CO2 application, to save water and eliminate the danger of legionella.

What other components for CO² and ammonia does KAV Consulting Pty Ltd offer?Seeing the world’s first MFTSCCO2SPC operate with a two - stage gas cooler with adiabatic assistance to the second stage convinced us that evaporative condensers and gas coolers would greatly improve the energy efficiency. So we have applied for patents on a very advanced all stainless steel evaporative con-denser design, which will become available soon with the first unit being tested on ammonia in early 2015.

Our unique design ability will reduce the electrical energy cost in supermarkets by about 20 to 50% if all AC, MT and LT refrigeration duties are integrated. In more temperate climates these systems would also be used to supply heating on demand during the cooler and winter months.

Which region in the world do you see the biggest growth for natural refrigerant services and products?The 1% design Ambient Wet Bulb Temperature does not exceed 82.4°F (28°C) in 98% of the world’s local cli-mates. This means that gas cooling to 88°F (31°C) in an evaporative gas cooler results in MFTSCCO2SPCs operating at higher electrical energy efficiencies, i.e. higher COPs than any other refrigerant all over the world, including ammonia, without expanders or ejectors.

I am very glad to finally confirm that my dear late friend Professor Gustav Lorentzen was right when he told me in 1985 that properly applied, CO2 has the potential to become the world’s most ubiquitous refrigerant! We have proven this with our MFTSCCO2SPC in a relatively warm climate like Melbourne which has an average annual temperature of 59°F (15°C).

Marc holds degrees (incl. two Masters) in Economics, Politics, and Marketing. He has studied at the London School of Economics, INSEAD Singapore, Sciences Po Paris, and the College of Europe. He has specialized in natural refrigerants since 2003. He is an active mem-ber of ASHRAE. He founded the leading industry plat-forms R744.com, hydrocarbons21.com, ammonia21.com and R718.com. Since 2007 Marc is co-founder and Managing Director of shecco, an independent market development company specialized in bringing natural refrigerants faster to market.

MICHAEL GARRY

Michael Garry is a business journalist with a 30-year track record. Most recently, he led the coverage of sus-tainability, technology and logistics at Supermarket News for more than 11 years. He is well known among retailers, suppliers, technology vendors and trade groups throughout the North American food retailing and consumer goods industries. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of M.I.T. with a degree in political science, he has written his first book, “Game of My Life – New York Mets”, which will be published in March 2015; in it, 25 baseball players recall their most memorable game.
