Africa… Still the Dark Continent

• Population of Africa 1.1 Billion• > 62% not connected with Grid

Power• Population of East Africa 265M• > 76% not connected with Grid

Needs of the Safe Lamps and solutions.

• There is a need for Energy by customers where the GridPower is not likely to be available soon, in next decade.

• The “Solutions” designed and developed for the regionare to assist in Access to Energy with Safe lamps.

• It may be…– Off-Grid Solar Back-up System or– Grid Supported Back-up System

• Schneider Electric (East Africa) has develop suchcustomized Solution based on market research andsurvey.

Why we need Safe and Reliable Lamps

There is a rush to install the solar lamps and this is done by the users and the conditions at the site are challenging in most of the cases. The surface where these are mounted can be flammable !!! Example Coconut /Banana leaf roofs……….

Solar Lamps and Risk of Fire !!!

The products must be to an International Standard and safe to use as the site conditions vary from one country to another.

IEC 62257-9-5 …..Lighting Africa Initiative.

• Products must confirm to IEC 62257-9-5• Quality Standards were imposed by Lighting Africa, a World

Bank initiative to promote the Access to Energy in Africa.• Only products complying to IEC Standards were allowed to

be on the approved list of products for sell in African countries.

• This gave a rise for more products to adopt IEC standards and be eligible for the African market.

• The Standards have helped in bench marking the products and its performance in line with the IEC Standards.
