A STUNNING AUTUMN CONCERTThe evening after we broke up for half term 132 students treated us to an autumn concert which was

remarkable even by the exceptionally high musical standards for which we are renowned. A number of professional musicians commented on the uniformly high quality, the variety and the quantity of music rehearsed

to concert standard in just seven weeks. Once again, the leadership of our senior musicians was much in evidence and year nine are to be congratulated on an excellent first concert. We thank Miss Green, Mr Jenkins,

Mr Jarvis and our peripatetic team, especially Mr Foreman and all our musicians. Well done to:

Our Science and Engineering News

The Japan Society recognises our science

We were privileged to attend a reception at St James’Palace to recognise the many sponsors and donors who support The Japan Society in two particular areas: The Tohoku Earthquake Relief Fund and school links, particularly those for which it provides translation services. Our science link was the only secondary school project highlighted at the reception. The link between Takamatsu Dai-ichi Special Science HighSchool and ourselves began in March when we werechosen as the top Science College in England for this special ongoing project involving fifty students fromeach school.

Once again we were pleased to raisethe profile of democracy during thisnational week for schools. The weekwas introduced in assemblies by yearten student, Toby Jeffery who is amember of our Politics Society and whodid an excellent job of engaging themain school year groups. We thank Ms Rehahn andour Politics Captains for organising the week.

Guest SpeakersDuring the week we were pleased to welcome DoctorRob Johns from the University of Essex, who talkedabout democracy, voting and the voting age. We alsohad a visit to the Politics Society from MEP

Stuart Agnew who widened the concept of democracyto the European Union and how it works.

The Big DebateAt the end of the week, staff and students from all yeargroups joined together to debate: "Should the votingage be lowered to 16?"

On the proposing side were Mr Coleman, MarcusBreeze, Sam Harrison and Ben Bodewes. Opposingthe motion were Miss Barran, Sam Lebbon, Sam Freeman and Toby French. After a lively debate,thirty- five of the audience voted decisively with twenty-seven in favour of lowering the voting age while eightwere against.

Politics is funDuring the week, students entered the politics wordcompetition, teachers had to get the word democracyinto their lesson and there was even Politics Dodgeballwhere the teams in political party colours competed in apolitical sporting arena. The usual weekly quiz for tutorgroups also had a politics theme.

Design students in LondonThis month our Sixth Form Product Design studentstravelled to London to visit the Design Museum andAnise Gallery. The purpose of the trip was to make thepupils more aware of designers and to understand thesocial, moral and environmental aspects of design. At the Design Museum they attended the Digital Crystal (creative lighting designs) and Designed to Win(sporting equipment featured in the London Olympics)exhibitions. The students were able to study, sketch andphotograph different product designs that will influencetheir upcoming project work.

Afterwards the students met designers and architectsfrom the D*Haus company who discussed all aspects ofthe product, models and artwork displayed at the Anisegallery. This provided a valuable opportunity to observedesign work first hand and to directly speak to design-ers with experience from industry. The designers congratulated the students on their knowledge and questions. Well done to all who went and toMr Gresham and Mr Taylor for organising the tripwhich certainly inspired the students for their own projects.

The GCSE Certificate PresentationWe were delighted to welcome Mrs Webb as our chief guest as we congratulated year twelve on their stunning GCSE success last summer. Mrs Webb, who completed twenty years’ service to the governing body lastsummer, presented the year group with their Records of Achievements in Mayand so it was fitting that she should see them receive their certificates thismonth. The summer marking their GCSE examinations will forever be associat-ed with our production of ‘The Phantom of The Opera’ at the Apex and so theassembly opened with ‘Think of Me’ from the show performed by Beth Somanaccompanied by Ashley Nayler. After the formal presentation, the year twelvemusicians treated us to a medley of other tunes. We congratulate the wholeyear group on the success their certificates represent.

We especially congratulate Millie Stanton,Rosie Waters, Eleanor White and EmmaWinward who have not dropped a gradesince joining us.
