‘I lived on the Vale andloved being catered. Therewas so much choice andbeing able to just swipe

your card to pay wassimple. Perfect whenyou don’t want to cook!’

Jamie, third year Human Biology,

ShackletonMeal Plan

The Meal Plan is both flexible and convenient,

offering a variety of food at outlets at the Vale

and across campus that cover opening times

from 8.00am until midnight. It is simple to use:

£46.50 each week is loaded on to your student

ID card, and you then use this card over a seven

day period as you would a debit card at any

University catering outlet. The card is refreshedeach week with a new amount of £46.50.

There are many benefits to meal plan including:

p It adds to your social life as students living in

flats on meal plan all come down to The Hub

to eat together in the evening

p With a busy academic and social timetable it’s

important to eat well, the University’s catering

department provides a range of healthy foods

p Frees up valuable time that would otherwise

be spent shopping, cooking and washing up

p Helps you budget your finances easily

every week p With over 20 coffee shops and restaurants

on campus including the Business school,

Medical school and library, there are a wide

variety of food options available to you

p No need to carry cash and if you lose your

meal card no one else can access your money

p Meal times aren’t set so you can eat

whenever suits you best

We cater for most dietary requirements

including Halal, Vegan, Vegetarian and Gluten

free and our chefs are always at hand to discuss

individual student needs.

The Hub at the Vale provides three distinct

food offers:

p ‘The Melt’ opens all day for breakfast and

lunch, with barista coffee, pastries and cakes

served in between. The Melt is a great place

to relax and hang out with your friends and

with wireless internet available it is often

used by students to carry out some group

study over a coffee.

p ‘Infusion’ is our largest restaurant on

The Vale and opens at 4.30pm for dinner.

It offers a choice of eight main course itemsalong with a salad bar, homemade soups

and deserts. Infusion is the ideal place to

come home to for dinner. Flatmates often eat

together and it is a great way of unwinding

after a busy day on Campus. Freshers,

particularly in those first few weeks of

arriving, gain a real sense of belonging

and community from dining with their flat

mates here and settle in very quickly to their

new life at The University of Birmingham.

p ‘Pizza Shack’ serves 14” pizzas freshly

made to order from 5.00pm up to midnight.

The Hub

All of our students are welcome to use the

Hub facilities, and those not on Meal Plan can

pay for food and drink at any of the outlets. As

well as The Melt, Infusion and the Pizza Shack,

the Hub also has a number of other attractions

for our students.

p This includes a new student bar, ‘The Duck

and Scholar’, with pool tables, Sky Sports,

live bands and cocktails. With its fantastic

views across The Vale lake, The Duck and

Scholar is a firm favourite with our students.p Costcutter convenience store is located

next to Reception in The Hub and provides

a range of fresh and frozen groceries alongside

a range of drinks and confectionary.

Costcutter also sells newspapers, stamps

and some pharmaceutical products.
