plus two 3,0801b IHI J3-IHI-7C auxiliary
turbojets). Extensive development of the
Lockheed Neptune in Japan has resulted in
the P-2J for the JMSDF, of which 46 are to
be built by 1974. Main features are an .
extended forward fuselage for extra ASW
equipment, larger rudder and redesigned
main undercarriage with twin wheels, turbo-
props,
and new sensor systems. Span, 101ft
5in; length, 96ft 2in; max gross, 74,9561b:
long-range cruise, 200kt.
Mitsubishi Mu-2 (Two 575 s.h.p. AiR e-
search TPE-331-25A turboprops). Nine
unpressurised Mu-2Cs are in service with
JGSDF for liaison, reconnaissance and air
support, and 17 Mu -2Es, also unpressurised,
have been delivered to the JASDF for
search and rescue duties. Span, 39ft 2in;
length, 33ft 3in; max weight, 8,9301b; max
cruise, at 10,000ft, 270kt; max range, 1,130
njn .
Mitsubishi XT-2
(Two Rolls-Royee/Turbo-
meca Adour turbofans giving 6,9501b with
afterburning). This two-seater supersonic
trainer with close-support capability was
designed for a JASDF 1974 requirement,
the first of two prototypes being due to
fly in 1971. The typ e.bea rs a quite rem ark
able resemblance to the Sepecat Jaguar.
Production of 200 is anticipated. Span, 26ft
3in; length, 55ft 9in; normal gross,
21,0001b; max speed, at 33,000ft, Mach
1.6; ferry range, 1,390 njn.
NAMC XC-1A
(Two 14,5001b Pra tt &
Whitney JT8D-9 turbofans). This high-wing
tactical transport was designed to meet the
JASDF's C-X (C-46 replacement) specifica
tion. The requirement is for about 50, with
the first of two prototypes to fly this
summer and service deliveries to begin in
1973.
It is an advanced design with full-
span slats, high-lift flaps, spoilers and T-tail.
The pressurised fuselage will hold 60 troops,
a 2i-ton truck, or a 10mm howitzer, with
access through an under-tail ramp door.
Span, 101ft 9in; length, 95ft 2in; normal
payload, 17,6351b, max gross, 85,9801b; max
cruise, at 35,100ft, 380kt; range, with
17,6351b payload, 700 n.m.; max fuel range,
1,800 run.
NAMC YS-11
(.Two 3,060 e.h.p . Roll s-
Royce Dart RDa.10/1 Mk 542 turboprops).
Nine have been delivered to the Japanese
Air Self-Defence Force, while the Maritime
SDF operates a further 3 YS-11M freighters
with strengthened cabin floors and extra
freight doors and 4 YS-11T anti-submarine
trainers. Span, 105ft; length, 86ft 3in; max
payload, 15,9051b, max gross, 51,0101b; max
cruise, 252kt; range, with max payload,
590 n.m., with max internal fuel, 1,140 a m

Japanese ASW flying-boat, which uses BLC
for near-STOL performance, flew in October
1967. Tw o are in service with the J M SD F
and 14 are to be delivered by the end of
1973.

Fokker-VFW F.27 Mk 400M Troopship

Mk.532-7 turboprops). Series 400 Friendship
with accommodation for 45 paratroops, 24
stretchers with 8 attend ants, a large carg o
door and 2 parachuting doors. Nine of the
RNethAF's 12 F.27s are of this type, as
are four for Sudan and eight for the
Argentine air forces; the Philippine Air
Force has a standard model. Span, 95ft 2in;
length, 72ft 4in; max payload,. 12,8351b,
max gross, 43,5001b; normal cruise, 256kt;
range, with max payload, 538 n.m., with
max fuel and 10,5601b payload, 1,065 n.m.

WSK-Mielec TS-11 Iskra (One Ho-10
1 7601b turbojet ). Replacement for piston^
engined TS-8 Bies basic trainer; first
entered service in 1963 and still in produc
tion. Holds four Class C-l-d records, includ
ing 839km/hr (453kt) over 15/25km. Attrac
tive unswept mid-wing monoplane with
underslung engine and boom rear fuselage.
Can have fuselage guns and underwing
stores. Span, 33ft; length, 36ft 7in; max
gross, 7,9351b; max speed, at 20,000ft,
432kt; max range, 540 n.m.

CAS A C.207 T.7) Azor
(Two 2,040 h.p.
Bristol Hercules 730 radials). Scaled-up
version of the C.201 twin-engined low-wing
transport now obsolete. Twenty of the 30-
pax Azors are in service, half being fitted
for cargo with a large door. Span, 91ft 3in;
length, 68ft 5in; max payload, 8,8201b;
max g ross, 36,3751b; max cruise at 12,340ft,
216kt; max range with 30 pax, 1,410 n.m,

CASA C.212 Avicar
(Two 755 e.h,p.
Garrett TPE 331-201 turboprops). A light
STOL transport designed to replace the
Spanish Air Force's fleet of Ju52/3M;
DC-3 and C.207s. High-wing monoplane
with ramp under rear fuselage for vehicle
loadin g; 16 paratr oops , 12 stretchers or 18
civil pax. Funds for two prototypes, 1970
first flight, and a production contract being
negotiated. Span, 62ft 4in; length, 49ft 9in;
max payload, 4,4101b; max gross, 13,2301b;
max cruise, at 12,000ft, 198kt; max range,

Tandem-seat low-wing monoplane basic
tra ine r: 5 protot ypes, 30 HA-200A and 55
HA-200D built for Spanish Air Force. Ten
HA-200B built for Egypt, with 90 being
built under licence. In the HA-200E, for
Spain, the Marbore VI replaces the less
powerful Marbore IIA, electronics have
been modernised and two Matra 38 weapon
mo untin gs are fitted. Span, 35ft lOin; length ,

MFI-9B Militrainei
(One 100 h.p. Rolls-
Royce Continental O-200-A). Development,
by its original designer, of the Bolkow
Junior, which was evaluated by the Swedish
Air Force and was used by Biafra during
the Nigerian civil war. Wing hard points
allow the carriage of six 7.5cm RP, two
Bofors Bantam teleguided missiles, or 18
