Year 10 student Latisha Kusay showed her class by presenting her ‘Novelty Cake’ and clinching 2nd prize and competing in a dairy judging class in which she placed 3rd! This follows Latisha’s success at the recent Cowpie Show where she won an astonishing 12 prizes in either 1st, 2nd or 3rd place. In addition to the above, a group of Year 9 students visited the show for enrichment beyond the classroom and

had a thoroughly enjoyable day. They were even lucky enough to see the Duchess of Cornwall and grab us a few

souvenir photos for our school albums!

Best in Show?

The South of England Show is a county show held annually at its own showground in Ardingly, West Sussex in June. The show was founded in 1967 and is organised by the South of England Agricultural Society. It attracts up to 80,000

visitors every year….plus a visitor or two from Imberhorne! Our students had quite a week being involved with this year's show. Nine of our GCSE and A Level Textiles students displayed their pieces to great reviews. We are pleased to report that Charlotte Harman in Year 11 won a commendation for her Australian themed, printed jump suit! Mrs Bonaccorsi, Leader of

Technology was so pleased for Charlotte and very proud of all the work shown by her students.

Dr C Barr, Deputy Headteacher

At Imberhorne we are extremely proud of

our links with the local community and be-

yond. I’m sure many of you know how much

we promote community involvement at school

but this article aims to highlight some of what we do.

Each year, form groups select a charity they wish to support,

many of those charities are local, such as Young Epilep-

sy and Crawley Shelter. In addition to these fundraising

efforts in small groups, which this year have included

everything from cake sales to three legged races, we also set

challenges to whole year groups to raise money via a special

event. You may remember the Year 11 ‘Fabulous’ event which

raised £1000 for Teenage Cancer Trust & Amnesty Interna-

tional in March of this year. It is also a long standing tradition

that we include whole-school non-uniform days in our calendar

supporting local charities such as St Catherine’s Hospice. We

are aware that we not only raise valuable funds for charities but

also increase awareness in assemblies of the brilliant work that

charities engage in. This encourages our young people to think

about others who are less fortunate than themselves.

As part of our Careers & Futures programme, we enjoy meet-

ing local members of the community at events such as the Year

9 ‘Speed Dating’ event which attracts over 30 professionals

into school to talk about the work that they do – opening up the

possibilities in the world of work for our young people. Many

of these volunteers are parents/carers who have signed up to

help our school via our ‘Working Together’ programme. Fur-

ther information and the sign up form is available on our web-

site http://www.imberhorne.co.uk/content/careers-and-futures-

guidance We hold various other careers events throughout the

year which local employers become involved with such as

Work Experience and Year 12 Futures Day.

Certain subjects lend themselves particularly well to involve-

ment with the community. For example, our Health & Social

Care department has strong links with local care homes and

healthcare centres, one of which is displaying our Year 11

work in their surgery at the moment. Our Certificate of Person-

al Effectiveness course works closely with Young Epilepsy,

preparing an annual Christmas party for the students of St

Piers. Our Music department have also built up relationships

with the local hospital and nursing homes, providing entertain-

ment to residents at certain times of the year. Our Maths, Eng-

lish and Language departments work very closely with East

Grinstead primary schools delivering a programme to them

throughout the year.

Imberhorne & the Community

Our Duke of Edinburgh programme is fabulous

at Imberhorne - students volunteer in the com-

munity for a period of 3,6 & 12 months for

Bronze, Silver & Gold respectively.

Well done to the 125 students in Year 10 who achieved 100% attendance for the whole of the first half of summer term. Year 10’s have been set the target of improving their attendance as a whole year group in this very important first year of GCSE courses. Eve-ry week that a student attends 100% of the time they are entered into a special prize draw to receive canteen vouchers and a skip the canteen queue pass. Winners last half term

were:

Jamie Greengrass * Caitlin Russell * Avinash Ashok * Max Holden * Katie Pearson * Ben Hobbs-Hewson * Leah Oliver * Joe Whiley * Katherine Woodhouse * Ryan Drew * Louisa Picton * Jack

Shoebridge

This incentive is highlighting the importance that we place on excellent attendance at Im-

berhorne. Outstanding attendance is proven to be directly linked to attainment.
