on celebrating 60 years of ordained ministry
He was priested on 21 September 1958, age 27, at Temple Bursall in
the Diocese of Birmingham. He served his title at Christchurch,
Quinton, later moving to St. Margaret’s, Olton. He came to rural
ministry in the Diocese of Exeter in 1963, firstly at Brentor and then
as Team Rector of the Lydford Group, and latterly as Priest-in-charge
of the benefice of Black Torrington. The first service he took at
St. Peter’s, Thornbury was in May 1978.

St Mary’s Church, Black Torrington
The flowers in St. Mary’s Church have for many years been arranged
by ladies (and occasionally by gentlemen) of the Parish on a voluntary
rotational basis. Flowers are bought, arranged and cared for every
fortnight except during Lent and Advent. One person is normally in
charge each fortnight on the rota, and they buy or gather the flowers
and greenery to make the Altar arrangement.
At Christmas, Easter and Harvest, flowers are arranged at the Altar,
and the church pew ends and the window-sills are also decorated by
several members of the team. We are always delighted if other
ladies or gentlemen join the Altar Flowers team. None of us is a
professional but we have learned by taking part.
If anyone is interested in having a go, working in our beautiful church
with lovely flowers, there will be a practice evening at St. Mary’s on
Wednesday, 17th October 2018 at 7pm. Current rota members
and new members are very welcome. Refreshments provided.
Our Harvest Service is on Sunday 21st October. If you would like to
bring your flowers with you to decorate for Harvest then please do
so.
Please contact Liz Plenty (01409 231187) or Val Letheren
(01409 231430) for more details, or to confirm attendance.

From the Rectory, Revd Kathy Roberts writes:
This Season of Creation draws to a close with thanksgiving services
for the harvest. Harvest is a sign and symbol of God’s generous
provision for us. Some of us are struggling to make ends meet, some
have enough, others are ‘jammed’ in the middle – Just About
Managing.
Soaring cost of living leaves an estimated 3.5m households without enough
income to cover all their bills every month was the headline of an article in
a 2013 newspaper. A more recent poll revealed that Official statistics
show that poverty affects nearly one in four of us, but in reality, many more
are just about coping. 1
Poverty and hunger are realities facing many people, not just here in
the UK, but across the world daily. Many live and die never having
had enough to nourish them.
How can we speak of a ‘generous’ God?
God is generous! And there is enough to go around, to feed hungry
mouths! If only those who have more than enough were willing to
share with those who have very little, or nothing at all.
In our remote corner of Devon we are known for our generosity. I
see God’s generous nature reflected in God’s people giving of
themselves, their time and substance. That is wonderful!
Let’s look for more opportunities to share a meal, give a donation,
take someone on an outing. Also, let’s look at what we possess, what
perhaps clutters our homes and see what we can give away for
someone else to use. Another possibility is to fast – miss a meal, or
even two meals – and to give away the money we would have spent
to a charity that feeds the hungry.

skills to good use.

We could volunteer a few hours at Food Bank. Holsworthy Food
Bank has been requesting volunteers. We could go on a short term
trip to see what ‘real’ poverty is. Devon Aid Korogwe is a local
organisation working in Tanzania to provide clean water to rural
villages. TEAR fund says we're Christians passionate about ending poverty.
We're following Jesus where the need is greatest.
Where might God be calling you to share generously with someone
who has far less than you – and make a difference in that person’s
life?
In giving thanks at Harvest, that is the real question for us who by
comparison with the majority of the world’s population, are wealthy,
beyond anything they have ever experienced for themselves!
Our giving is a reflection of our gratitude for God’s own generosity to us.
With love and prayers
Kathy

A Prayer at Harvest Time
Lord God,
help us, we pray, to recognise the difference
between satisfaction and smugness,
being content and being comfortable.
May our expressions of gratitude never deafen us
to the cries of those in need.
And in celebrating your love
may we never forget
that your love reaches others through us. Amen

Volunteering and safeguarding.
Our benefice of churches relies on volunteers coming forward to get
involved and support the running of the churches, and we are
immensely grateful to all who have volunteered, to be Church
Wardens, members of PCC, ministry team, servers, readers,
intercessors, organists, flower arrangers and cleaners to name but a
few. Without these volunteer roles how ever big or small the
churches, the body of Christ, would struggle to offer the services it
does to the church and local community. So if you have some time to
spare and would like to get involved please contact your nearest
Church Warden or member of the Parochial Church Council and you
will be most warmly welcomed.
As with all organisations that support vulnerable children and adults we do follow an informal recruitment process for those roles that
have more contact with these groups. This would mean filling out a
short application followed by a criminal records checks. We have a
duty of care to protect the most vulnerable in our communities
which is why all volunteers that work with children or vulnerable
adults should complete this process. There are many roles that do
not require this recruitment process so that everyone, from what
ever background, can be involved.
Safeguarding is everyones responsibility so if you have a worry or a
concern please contact a Church Warden, member of Clergy or
myself - Gina Finch - you will find my contact details on the
safeguarding notice on the opposite page of this magazine.
In the meantime- get volunteering!

Saturday Church—4th Birthday
How wonderful it was to welcome new and old faces from near and
far, to celebrate the 4th Birthday of Saturday Church, including Ruth Jones, the Holsworthy Community College Christian youth worker,
and Jane Lucas the Rural Dean. To see so many different people, of a
variety of ages, from babes in arms to those of more “advanced
years” enjoying together the morning’s activities, is quite
inspirational. In addition to praying and singing, we made party hats to
wear, and the children took part in a very special re-telling of the
parable of the lost coin, illustrating it’s important message to us. Our
observational skills were tested – just what was William wearing?
And everyone joined in with a quiz game based upon the books of
the four evangelists. Thank goodness we had two specialist quiz
masters in Kathy and Jane to adjudicate the answers. We so enjoyed
the popcorn & ice creams in August, we had to have them again
for the party, with the addition of a birthday cake of course!
Who would have thought from those early days, that four years later,
we would continue to offer a form of worship that would appeal to
so many people, who come together whenever they can. Thank-you
to everyone for contributing to the 4th birthday in so many different
ways, but most particularly by being there and taking part.
I look forward to seeing you in October for our very special Harvest
event.

Afternoon Tea in aid of mission to
Orphanage in Pravadia, Bulgaria held at St Mary’s Church
May I take this opportunity in thanking all those who helped to make the afternoon tea a roaring success. As I explained at the time I am
(to say the least) absolutely overwhelmed with the generosity and
help I have received in raising money to enable me to help with this
mission. The collection of donations made to St Mary’s on my behalf
of £212.00 is greatly appreciated and I have to thank, again, the team
of cake and sandwich makers for making this happen. May I also
thank all thoe who attended the afternoon tea and gave so
generously.
For your reassurance, all monies donated are being recorded as will
all expenses incurred during the trip. Further to this I will be posting
regular updates on the village facebook page as to the progress we
will be making on the building works during our eight day mission.
For those who are unaware of what we inted to be doing during our
visit to Pravadia orphanage its this:- For the last 18 months—two
years the gymnasium at the orphanage has been closed to the
children due to the inside of the roof being in a bad state of repair
and debris constantly falling onto the gym floor. Our intention is to
build a lowered celing complete with joists and wall plates and
covered with 20mm plywood to prevent any debris falling and causing
injury to children or staff. This way the gymnasium can be opened
again without fear of injury.
My friends who have been involved with this project (The house of
Rachel) for many years have completed works such as renovating
school rooms, upgrading toilets, painting and decorating bedrooms,
replacing doors and windows, building interior toilet facilities,
creating disabled access and many other jobs have been completed.
In addition to this the charity has provided items such as:- cooking
range, school equipment including books in Braille for the blind
children, a car and minibus, musical instruments, donating a halfway house for children leaving state care, purchase of crafted quilts to
help keep the children warm in the very cold winters for example –
20 degrees.

15
There are many other ways that the charity has helped which can be
seen on the website www.houseofrachel.org.
I am really looking forward to my trip to help with these proposed
building works and as we say giving something back. As the heading
on ‘Connected’ suggest ‘Christian Love in Action’.
Thank you everyone for your kind support.

Holsworthy Mission Community Prayer
Loving God,
receive our love,
refresh our vision,
renew our lives,
so that together our Mission Community
may witness to the truth of your gospel,
build up our fellowship
and deepen our commitment to grow in prayer.
May our lives of discipleship draw others to follow Jesus Christ.
Lead us into creative ways to service the people of Devon with joy,
to the glory of your name. Amen.
A Prayer for Bible Sunday
Gracious God,
we praise you for the way your word has spoken to so many across the years,
offering a lamp for their path and a faith to live by.
We thank you for the way it has spoken to us,
stirring our imagination,
kindling and nurturing faith,
confronting and questioning,
yet also renewing and uplifting,
each day assuring us of your constant love and
gracious purpose.
Teach us to study your word,
to reflect on its meaning,
and to seek enlightenment,
so that we may hear your voice and respond.
Open our hearts and minds to what you would
say to us,
and help us to listen.
In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen. Nick Fawcett

Say again?
Three elderly church ministers, all hard of hearing, were playing golf
one sunny spring morning. The Methodist minister observed,
‘Windy, isn’t it?’ ‘No,’ the Baptist pastor said, ‘it’s Thursday.’ The
Anglican vicar agreed: ‘So am I! Let’s go get a pint.’
Bow wow!
‘Doctor, I can hear all kinds of animals talk in my head.’
‘Well, don't worry,’ said the doctor. ‘You're just having Disney spells.’

Foodbank that operates one afternoon a week to support the local
community by providing 3 days of emergency food supplies to local
people in difficult circumstances. We are here to help Holsworthy
District families in a crisis on a short term basis.
We open on Wednesday afternoons from 2pm until 4pm and also
welcome “Pop-In”s for a cup of tea.
We are currently experiencing a shortage of volunteers to man the
foodbank and are seeking a few more volunteers who could give us
one afternoon a month so that we can continue to provide this
facility in Holsworthy. If you feel you could help us out please drop-
in to see us or contact Sarah Gainsbury (current co-ordinator) on
01409 259227 or by email [email protected].
Alternatively, visit our website www. http://
holsworthyfoodbank.btck.co.uk/ and send a message via the “Contact
Us” page.
Thank you
