    ACTION RESEARCH IN READING COMPREHENSION

    I. Title: STRATEGIC TEACHING ACTIVITIES IN READING (STAR)

    Obviously, this is a very nice adage but sadly, classrooms across the nation are

    interspersed with pupils who experience the same type of frustration every day. They

    don’t possess adequate re!din# co$%re&en'ion skills to do what is expected of 

    them. Without comprehension, reading is simply following words on a page from left to

    right while sounding them out. The words on the page have no meaning. nd while

    people read for many different reasons, the chief goal is to derive some understanding

    of what the writer is trying to convey and make use of that information ! whether for fact

    gathering, learning a new skill, or for pleasure. That’s why reading comprehension skills

    are so important. Without them the reader cannot gather any information and use it to

    efficiently function and en"oy the richness of life.

    We#re always telling children that books and reading are good for them, but have

    we ever really thought about why that#s true$ What do younger kids get from being read

    to$ %oes reading matter$

     lmost half of the researchers’ class belonged to the &rustration 'evel based on

    the ()*'+** result conducted last -une +//, 01/2 3he also observed that her pupils

    has no love for reading even though she provided enough reading materials suitable for 

    them. %uring the administration of the /st (eriodic Test, she witnessed that her pupils

    don’t give enough time in reading the test questions. The 4(3 of her class showed a

    worrying outcome considering that they are carefully taught and remediate.

    *t is on this premise that she decided to do an action research on strategic

    teaching activities in reading that would develop their love for reading henceforth enrich

    their reading comprehension skill.

    This action research will be instigated to 5rade * class academic year 01/2+

    01/6.

    III. De'cri%tion o t&e Proect

    The researcher is not aiming to have a /117 reader with comprehension of her 

    class. What she aimed is to decrease at least 27 of the total number of pupils who

    belonged the frustration level.

    8ased on the ()*'+** (re+Test result conducted last -une +// 01/2, her class

    had 297 frustration level. With the strategies that she wished to implement, she hope

    and pray that these will help improve their comprehension skills.

    3econdly, the love for reading will be inculcate to each one of them if these

    pro"ects will be reali:ed.

    'astly, with the comprehension skill that they develop and acquire through this

    pro"ect, it will help increase the 4(3 of her class.

    These teaching strategies in reading will be implemented in her ;nglish class.

    Other reading activities will be done in remedial class and after class. These will be

    reflected in her reading framework program.

    IV. Go!l' !nd O*ecti+e'

    The purpose of this reading program is to inculcate in their young mind the love

    for reading as well as to increase awareness of the pupils on the importance of reading

    comprehension. &urther, this aims to

     educate pupils about responsible utili:ation of reading materials=

     decrease the number of frustration level of her pupils=

     encourage pupils to develop a life+long habit of reading.
