Activating Dual Transfer Mode
1 Activating Dual Transfer ModeDual Transfer Mode (DTM) is licence-based application software. The type of the
licence is on/off. The DTM feature state can be ON, OFF, or CONF. You can modify
parameters related to DTM when the DTM feature state is ON or CONF. DTM also
requires a valid PCU2 licence.
When the DTM or PCU2 licence expires or the state of DTM or PCU2 is changed to OFF
or CONF, the value of the DTM enabled parameter is changed to N in all segments of
the BSC. You can change the value of the DTM enabled parameter to Y only if the state
of both DTM and PCU2 is ON.
Although the DTM licence is BSC wide, DTM is always activated at segment level.
To guarantee service continuity during cell changes, it is best to activate DTM in all cells
within a specific geographical area.
When cell A is defined as a neighbour cell to cell B, adjacent cell object A is created in
cell B. When cells A and B are in the same BSC and DTM is enabled in cell A, the value
of the DTM enabled parameter is automatically changed to Y also in adjacent cell
object A in cell B. The DTM state of the external neighbour cells must be specified man-
ually.
Activating DTM does not cause downtime, so you can do it at any time.
For a description of Dual Transfer Mode (DTM), see Dual Transfer Mode under Feature
descriptions/Data in the PDF view.
Before you start
Make sure that the MSC supports the international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI)
delivery.
In a Nokia MSC, the COMMON ID INFORMATION SUPPORTED parameter specifies
whether IMSI delivery is supported.
Steps
1 Check that the licences that cover PCU2 and DTM have been installed (W7I).
ZW7I:LIC,FULL:LIC=<licence code>;
For instructions on installing licences, see Licensing in BSC under Install and
upgrade/Software in the PDF view.
2 Check the value of the PCU2 and DTM feature states (W7I).

Testing the activation of Dual Transfer Mode on cell lev-el
2 Testing the activation of Dual Transfer Mode
on cell level
Before you start
Make sure that the following network elements and mobile stations (MSS) are available:
• 1 DX MSC (MSC) that supports the internal mobile subscriber identity (IMSI)
delivery
• 1 base station controller (BSC) that supports DTM
• 1 base transceiver station (BTS)
• 1 transceiver (TRX)
• 1 serving GPRS support node (SGSN)
• 2 MSS, one of which supports DTM
• web server
Make sure that you have at least two packet data channels in the packet-switched (PS)
territory. Two channels are required so that the DTM circuit-switched (CS) and PS con-
nections can be allocated to the PS territory. If a territory upgrade is required before the
DTM call can be allocated, it may slow down the call establishment procedure.
Steps
1 Create PS DTM Measurement and CS DTM Measurement (TPM).
ZTPM:GPRS,PS_DTM,<measurement day>,<measurement
interval>,<output interval>;
ZTPM:MEASUR,CS_DTM,<measurement day>,<measurementinterval>,<output interval>;
2 Start the measurements (TPS).
ZTPS:GPRS,PS_DTM;
ZTPS:MEASUR,CS_DTM;
3 Wait until the measurements are enabled and check them (TPI).
ZTPI:GPRS,PS_DTM;
ZTPI:MEASUR,CS_DTM;
4 Establish a speech call between MS 1 and MS 2.
MS 1 must be DTM-capable.
5 Establish a PS connection.
Use the browser of MS 1 to download data from the web server.
6 Disconnect the calls.
First, stop the browsing on MS 1. Then, disconnect the speech call on MS 2.

7 Check the measurement data.
At the end of the measurement period, check the measurement data in Nokia NetAct.
You can also use the MEFICO tool. For more information, see• Reporter and Performance Management Principles in Nokia NetAct Product Docu-
mentation
• Converting BSC Measurement and Observation Result Files with MEFICO under
Operate and maintain in the PDF view.
8 Stop the measurements (TPE).
ZTPE:GPRS,PS_DTM;
ZTPE:MEASUR,CS_DTM;
Expected outcomeThe speech call continues uninterrupted during the data transfer and conversation con-
tinues after the PS connection is disconnected.
The following counters of PS DTM Measurement are updated:
• 105009 DTM ALLOCATIONS INITIAL
• 105011 DTM DURATION SUM FR
• 105015 PEAK OF SIMULTANEOUS DTM CS CONNECTIONS
Depending on the conditions of the packet traffic, the following counters are also
updated:
• 105016 DTM REQUESTS OF 1 UL PS TSL - 105019 DTM REQUESTS OF 2 DL
PS TSL
• 105021 DTM ALLOCATIONS OF 1 UL PS TSL - 105024 DTM ALLOCATIONS OF
2 DL PS TSL
The following counters of CS DTM Measurement are updated:
• 106000 MO DTM CALL INITIAL REQUESTS
• 106011 DTM RELEASES DUE PS RELEASE
• 106018 DTM ASSIGNMENT COMMANDS
Depending on the capability of the MS and other conditions, also other counters may be
updated.

Testing the activation of Dual Transfer Mode on net-work level
3 Testing the activation of Dual Transfer Mode
on network level
The power budget (PBGT) values used in this test case have been specified so thatonce the Dual Transfer Mode (DTM) call has been established and the value of the
target cell's HO margin pbgt (PMRG) parameter is decreased to minimum, a normal
power budget handover is performed to the target cell. For the handover to succeed, it
is assumed that the signal strength of the target cell is at least -100 dBm and that the
signal strength of the target cell is no more than 24 dB weaker than that of the source
cell. After the handover, a DTM call is re-established in the target cell. Adjacency has
only been defined in one direction, so that the target cell can be used to re-establish a
DTM call without the call being handed over back to the source cell.
If the handovers function in a normal call, you do not need change the handover param-
eters for the DTM.
Note that this test case example is intended to a testbed environment. You can make
the test in a live network by changing the location of a mobile station without modifying
the parameters.
Before you start
Make sure that the following network elements and mobile stations (MSS) are available:
• 1 mobile serving switching centre (MSC) that supports the international mobile sub-
scriber identity (IMSI) delivery
• 1 base station controller (BSC) that supports DTM
If you want to test an external handover, you need two BSCs that both support DTM.
• 2 base transceiver stations (BTS)
• 2 transceivers (TRX)
• 1 serving GPRS support node (SGSN)
• 2 MSS, one of which supports DTM
• web server
In addition, Network Operation Mode I (NOM I) is required. NOM I requires the Gs inter-
face.
Steps
1 Create Handover Measurement, PS DTM Measurement, and CS DTM Measure-
ment (TPM).
ZTPM:MEASUR,HO,<measurement day>,<measurement interval>,<output
interval>;
ZTPM:GPRS,PS_DTM,<measurement day>,<measurement
interval>,<output interval>;
ZTPM:MEASUR,CS_DTM,<measurement day>,<measurement
interval>,<output interval>;
2 Start the measurements (TPS).

Deactivating and testing Dual Transfer Mode
4 Deactivating and testing Dual Transfer Mode
Steps
1 To implement this step, choose one of the following alternatives:
a To deactivate DTM in a specific cell, change the value of the DTM enabled
parameter to N (EQV).
ZEQV:SEG=<SEG identification>::::DENA=N;
b To deactivate DTM entirely, change the DTM feature state to OFF (W7M).
ZW7M:FEA=63:OFF;
Changing the DTM feature state to OFF also changes the value of the DTM
enabled parameter in all cells to N.
2 Establish a speech call between MS 1 and MS 2.
MS 1 must be DTM capable.
3 Try to use MS 1 to establish a PS connection.
Use the browser of MS 1 to download data from a web server.
Expected outcome
The conversation continues over the speech call, but you cannot establish a PS connec-
tion during the speech call.
