Active chilled beams and induction units for ceiling installation

LTG offers air diffusion by various techniques:

- Tangential flow from the ceiling

- Mixed flow from the ceiling

- Indivent flow (mixed/displacement air) from the ceiling

Active chilled beams and induction units KlimaventR areunits for induction systems.

The induction unit is a combined air and water system:

- The air system ensures air replenishment and room airmoisture control.

- The water system, which is particularly economical forthe transportation of energy, additionally heats or coolsthe air using heat exchangers.

This provides the twomost significant features of the induc-tion unit: energy-saving mode of operation and low spacerequirements.

Mode of OperationThe primary air (usually the fresh air requirement) from thecentral air conditioning unit is discharged through nozzlesat high speed. Simultaneously, it draws back-in secondaryair from the room. The secondary air flows into the unit through a heat ex-changer and is heated or cooled. The primary air is mixed with the heated or cooled second-ary air inside the unit and flows into the room through anoutlet grille or diffuser.

TypesLTG offers different types and sizes for any application. The main distinctive feature of the LTG induction units isthe way the temperature is controlled

Two-pipe systemThe unit has only one heat exchanger through whichchilled water flows for cooling and hot water for heating. Thus, it is only possible to either heat or cool in a single wa-ter circuit.

Four-pipe systemThe unit has two separate water systems, one for heating, the other for cooling. Thus, chilled and hotwater will alwaysremain separate. The four-pipe system fulfills all require-ments on varying loads and small control zones.

Valve control (water-side control)The heating or cooling output of the heat exchanger is con-trolled by modifying the water flow.

Damper control (air-side control)The heating or cooling output is controlled by modifying theflowof secondary air. Adjustable dampers guide the aircur-rent through the air cooler or the air heater or they divert thesecondary air through a bypass avoiding the heat ex-changer.

Active chilled beam type HDF 300

SpecificationThe active chilled beam type HDF has been designed asa modular ceiling unit conditioning rooms with view to hu-midity and temperature based on the induction principle,i.e. without the use of a fan.

Installation, positioningIts low construction height allows installation in false ceil-ings offering limited space. The thus resulting low differ-ence in height between the heat exchanger and the ceilinglevel has been considered in the chilled beam's designwhich is suitable for dry cooling without dehumidificationand condensate drainage.

The reduced construction width and the freely selectablelength allow an easy integration in 300 or 312mm grid ceil-ings. Unit lengths from 1200mm to band installation (withina 300 mm grid system) may be realized.

The type of construction, which provides complete separa-tion from the ceiling cavity, suppresses sound transmissionfrom adjacent rooms (telephony sound insulation).

Functional PrincipleRoom air humidity is controlled through the centrally dehu-midified supply air avoiding involuntary dehumidification in-side the chilled beam. The 2-pipe system may be used foreither cooling only or change-over operation with cooling/reheating. The 4-pipe system with independent water cir-cuits automatically switches from cooling to heating andvice versa.

During operation, the primary air is 100% pretreated out-side air via a centralRTL unit. It assures theuse-dependentbasic ventilation using outside air, e.g. in conformity withDIN EN 13779 or DIN EN 15251 recommendations.Through uniformly arranged nozzles over the entire unitlength, the primary air is led in an injector-type diffuserwhich induces secondary air.Depending on the room load, this secondary air is either heated or chilled in a 2-pipe or4-pipe heat exchanger.

The supply air, a mixture of primary and secondary air, isexpelled into the room in two directions via ceiling jet.

Advantages Low primary air pressures between 50 and 100 Pa- Low-noise operation; sound pressure may be selectedso as to remain below 35 dB(A)

- High secondary (water-side) output of up to 350 W/m

- Excellent air flow balance of the units that form one ductrun

- Energy-efficient operation

Flexible nozzle design- May be selected for design terminal pressure

- Primary air flowmay be selected according to roomusebetween 20 and 100 m3/h/m

- Non combustible metal nozzles

Low installation height- 230 mm standard

- 160 mm type HDF-N

Active chilled beams and induction units for ceiling installationActive chilled beam type HDF 600

View of unit

ApplicationThe active chilled beam HDF is a ceiling-mounted induc-tion unit for ventilation and individual temperature controlbased on the induction principle, i.e. without the use of afan, using processed outside air.

Installation, positioningThe low construction height (200 mm) allows installation infalse ceilings offering limited space. The thus resulting lowdifference in height between the heat exchanger and theceiling level has been considered in the chilled beam'sdesignwhich is suitable for dry cooling without dehumidific-ation and condensate drainage.

The chilled beam is suitable for installation in grid ceilingsmeasuring 600 x 600 mm, 600 x 1200 mm, 625 x 625 mmor 625 x 1250 mm and may be positioned in or adjacent toT-bar profiles. With grid and plasterboard ceilings, installa-tion may be edge-to-edge or overlapping.

Functional PrincipleDuring operation, the primary air is 100% pretreated out-side air via a central central AHU. It assures the use-de-pendent basic ventilation using outside air, e.g. in conform-ity with DINEN 13779 or DINEN 15251 recommendations.Through uniformly arranged nozzles over the entire unitlength, the primary air is led in an injector-type diffuserwhich induces secondary air.Depending on the room load, this secondary air is either heated or chilled in a 2-pipe or4-pipe heat exchanger.

The supply air, a mixture of primary and secondary air, isuniformly diffused to four sides into the room via preset, di-vergent ceiling jets covering all four room directions.

Room air humidity is controlled through the centrally dehu-midified supply air avoiding involuntary dehumidification in-side the chilled beam. The 2-pipe system may be used foreither cooling only or change-over operation with cooling/reheating. The 4-pipe system with independent water cir-cuits automatically switches from cooling to heating andvice versa.

The type of construction, which provides complete separa-tion from the ceiling cavity, suppresses sound transmissionfrom adjacent rooms (telephony sound insulation).

Advantages Low primary air pressures between 50 and 150 Pa- Low-noise operation; sound pressure may be selectedso as to remain below 35 dB(A)

- Very low SFP value for secondary air conveyance(< 0.04 kW/(m³/s)) possible

- High secondary (water-side) output with low primarypressure

- Excellent air flow balance of the units that form one ductrun

Flexible nozzle design- Six calibrated, well-matched jet combinations- Non combustible metal nozzles

- Exchangeable jet strip, optional

Low installation height (200 mm)- Installation possible in suspended ceilings of lowheight- Facilitates the crossing of lines

Efficient injector and heat exchanger- High specific secondary output even with low primaryair flow rate (in certain areas > 1W/K/(m³/h))

- High heating capacity evenwith lowLPHWsupply tem-peratures (e.g. 30 _C)

- Lower overtemperature in the heating mode, thus bet-ter ventilating efficiency

- High cooling capacity with high CHW supply temperat-ures (e.g. 16 _C)

- Low water flow rates designed for a temperature rangeof 3 K

Flexible connection of services- Primary air connection with NW 125 on the longitudinalside (standard)

- Air connection left or right, as required

- Eccentric air connection, if required, not conflicting withceiling suspension

- Water connections outside the unit on top inorder toen-able connection on the left or right

Easy maintenance design- Easy removal of secondary air grille, secured by moor-ing lines

- Easy access to and cleaning of heat exchanger andjets

- No protective air filter required for the heat exchanger.

Virtually draught-free indoor air flow- Optimized air distribution with steady, preset divergent, inductive ceiling jet

Attractive appearance- Visible surfaces powder coated e.g. sim. to RAL 9010- Secondary air grille in the form of a perforated sheetgrille (open surface > 63%)

Easy commissioning- Measuring equipment to determine the air flow rate(standard)

DimensioningInduction systems are economical if operated locally usingthe primary air flow calculated based on DIN EN 15251while covering the cooling loads effective in the room. Anoccupancy rate typical for offices of 10 m² floor space/per-son results in a calculated specific primary air flow rate of5m³/h/m² for a low-emission building. A “non-low-emission“building requires an outside air flow rate of 7.5 m³/h/m². Thecooling loads of offices provided with good solar protectionare usually about 40 to 60 W/m².

What’s special about the HDF ceiling induction unit is the4-directional supply air diffusion. It requires aminimum dis-tance to be observed between two units or unit and wall, re-spectively, in order to avoid excessive jet deflection vertic-ally downwards.

Indoor air flow: Supply air is diffused in all four directions

Location of terminals in the ceiling gridPositioning of the units in the grid ceiling should be in awayto harmonize with the overhead lights. Avoid close vicinityof the units to protruding overhead lights.

Active chilled beams and induction units for ceiling installationAir conditioning system LTG Indivent®

ApplicationModern air conditioning systems are required to removeheat loads and airborne substances from the occupiedspace in a safe and effective manner, without producingany draft.

The air conditioning system's construction, however, mustleave room for flexibility with view to the appearance anduse of the room. Furthermore, the system must be cost ef-fective within a wide performance range.

The LTGsystem IndiventRmeets these requirements. Itof-fers high thermal comfort by combining the advantages ofboth a mixed and a displacement air flow.

Installation, positioningUnits are usually installed over the 'core' wall, in a ceilingbulkhead or in a suspended ceiling. Indivent units requireconnection to the air conditioning system's primary air sup-ply and the chilled water system.

Installation example for IndiventR system

Advantages Comfort- High cooling capacities and uniform temperatures inthe entire occupied space.

- High thermal comfort due to low air speeds and low tur-bulence.

- High air quality - heat and airborne pollution are ex-hausted at high level.

Economy- The Indivent® system requires only one compact, roomsaving air duct system since the heat loads are beingremoved via a compact chilled water system.

Flexibility- Interior design of ceiling, lighting and window elementsis permitted.

- Workplaces in the roommay be arranged according torequirement, without any restrictions.

Mode of operationThe LDB linear diffuser with integrated cooling is installedin the ceiling over the core wall while heating is providedthrough radiators located under the window. With this con-figuration, identical flow patterns during summer andwinterare achieved. Further enhancements allow for over-win-dow locations.

Recirculated air is drawn in from the room and across acooling coil. The mixture of fresh air and recirculated air isblown into the room through a linear diffuser. In the localmixed air zone the temperature/velocity differencesbetween the ambient air and the supply air are reduced.

Close to the floor, the cooled air jet directs itself at lowspeed and with little turbulence across the occupied spacetowards the window. The air speed is virtually independentof the cooling load. The temperature difference betweenthe head and the foot level is less than 1K.

Air heated by room loads rises to high level .

Above the occupied space a cushion of warm room airwithan increased pollution concentration is formed and re-moved from the room. In this way the formation of temperat-ure layers ensures cost effective system operation .

Proposed InstallationThe best installation position for the linear diffusersdepends on:

use of the room type of room ceiling design return air path inside the false ceiling.Flexibility of diffuser design and adjustment, ensures aperfect solution from both flow technology and aestheticaspects, for example:

Ideal location for the induction unit/ fan coil unit with returnair is within an open grid ceiling.

Equally successful are closed false ceilings or ceilingbulkheads that are separated through walls extending tothe room soffit. Shadow joints in the ceiling boxes or in themarginal gap serve as return air openings. The averagespeed in these openings should not exceed 0.6 to 0.9 m/s(jet contraction not considered).

For installation of LTG Linear Diffusers in the area close tothe corridor, the following is recommended:

If there are no ceiling bulkheads separating the supply airfrom the return air, a distance of about 1 m must be keptbetween the return air opening and the air outlet.

Install the linear diffuser in parallel to the corridor wall.Optimum distance: 0.6 to 1 m.

When using full height cupboards , a minimum distanceof 0.2 m between the air outlet and the cupboard frontmust be provided.

Cabinets directly underneath linear diffusers will have noimpact on the indoor air flow if a clearance of about 0.4 mto the ceiling is allowed.

LTG type LHG units are induction units for 2-pipe systems, with an integrated linear diffuser of type LDB.

Mode of operationThe primary air from the airconditioningAHU(fresh air rate)is diffused through nozzles at high speed.

At the same time, secondary air is drawn in from the room. This secondary air is cooled within a heat exchanger.

Primary air ismixedwith this cooled secondary air, then de-livered into the room through the linear diffuser.

Depending on the unit type, control may be performed bywater-side valves, or air-side bypass damper. Heating is,in general, performed through static heating at the facade.

Advantages High cooling capacitydue to high capacity heat exchanger

Low-noise operationdue to the optimized shape of the nozzles and theirarrangement

Flexible nozzle equipmentmultiple nozzle sets that offer flexible selection, allow foroptimum indoor air flow

High operational safetylow-friction ball-bearings and torsion free casing.

Maintenance-free actuatorsMaintenance-free and safe-to-operate electrical(0 - 10 V) permanent or3 point)and pneumatic actuatorsfor any controller type.

High induction ratiothanks to an excellent aerodynamicenergy conversionofthe primary air flow.

Computer-based selection using special programsIndiventR units are sized using special LTG computerprograms.

Fire protectionis ensured through the use of primary air nozzles ofaluminum and primary air sockets of sheet steel (bothoptions on request).

Active chilled beams and induction units for ceiling installationAir conditioning system Indivent®, ceiling induction unit type LHG

Selection examplesGiven values:

Required cooling capacity: Qk soll = 550 W

Water inlet temperature: tVL = 16 C

Room temperature/suction air temperature beforeentering the heat exchanger: tR/tA = 26 C

Primary air flow rate: VP = 65 m3/h

Static pressure at primary air socket: p = 250 Pa

Primary air temperature: tP = 18 C

Installation dimensions / slot length : LS = 1500 mm

LHG, size 800selected (according to selection chart)

Resulting according to selection chart:

Primary cooling capacity: QP 22 W/K x 8 K = 176 W(with tP = tR - tPri = 8 K)

Secondary cooling capacity Qk 43 W/K x 10 K = 430 W(at standard flow rate) (with t = tA - tVL = 10 K)

Total cooling capacity: Qkges 176 W + 430 W = 606 W

Sound power level: LwA 32 dB(A)

The total cooling capacity is larger than the required cooling capacity.Since the primary cooling capacity depends on the primary air flow rate, and the latter is fixed due to the required air change rate, the secondary cooling capacity may be reduced by changing the water volume.

Required secondary cooling capacity:Qk soll - QP = Qkerf 550 W - 176 W = 374 W

Share of the secondary coolingcapacity in percent when usingthe standard water flow rate 374 W / 430 W = 0,87 87 %

According to the diagrams (previous page) the following values are obtained:

Water flow rate at87% secondary cooling capacity:about 62 % of the standard flow rate(reading) 300 kg/h x 0,62 = 186 kg/h

Pressure loss at 186 kg/h: ca. 9 kPa (reading)

The secondary cooling capacity may be adjusted through selection of the unit size, the slot length and by changing the water flow rate.

Active chilled beams and induction units for ceiling installationCeiling induction unit type HFM 2500

Views of unit

Ceiling induction unit type HFM 2500 in manufacture

HFM units mounted in test device

ApplicationThe LTG ceiling induction unit type HFM was specificallydesigned for air conditioning large factory buildings that re-quire ventilation, heating and cooling. If thermal loads arehigh, the advantages of an air-waterA/C systemcomparedto an air-only system may be used as follows:

air replacement and discharge of particle and humidityloads through a centrally processed primary air flow interms of a pure outside air flow

highly flexible, decentralized heating and coolingoperation

as a 2-pipe system for heating with centrally heatedprimary air (heat up) and cooling in the recirculating airmode trough water-cooled heat exchanger

- as a 4-pipe systemwith separate circuits for cold and hotwater for heating and cooling in the recirculating airmode

This allows to limit the outside air flow to the minimum airexchange required to maintain hygienic conditions, and tominimize the construction volume for A/C central units andduct systems.

Installation, positioningThrough adaptation of the air outlet different installa-tion types (horizontal to vertical) and installationheights (5 - 15 m) may be realized depending on theactual conditions on site.

Mode of OperationThe primary air delivered by the A/C central unit is blownout virtually noiseless through nozzles. Through the thusgenerated induction, room air is fed through a heat ex-changer in terms of a secondary air flow that is heated orcooled. The primary air is mixed inside the unit with theheated or cooled secondary air, then distributed in theroom through air diffusers.

The diffuser is continuously adjusted according to the tem-perature difference between the supply air and the room inorder to ensure good thermal comfort with an adequate jetpenetration depth.

The primary air flow is best adapted to the actual use byswitching on/off units or unit groups.

Thanks to the fact that the airborne dust is decreasing de-pending on the suspension height, the heat exchangerstays clean for a long time, especially if condensation isavoided through primary air dehumidification.

Advantages High cooling and heating capacity (200 W/m2)due to high induction ratio and heavy-duty large-surfaceheat exchanger

Low-noisethanks to a special nozzle geometry and primarypressure level 150 - 200 Pa; a sound pressure levelbelow 35 dB(A) may be achieved

Fire safetyEntirely made of sheet steel with non-combustiblenozzles

Air outlet on secondary air sideThanks to high induction ratio low temperature differ-ences between supply air and room; direction of diffusedair continuously adjustable between heating and coolingmode; in the cooling mode splitting of the supply air jetsinto highly inductive individual jets; high flexibility with re-gard to adaptation of the diffuser to installation positionand height

Adjustable primary air flowthrough open/shut operation of the absolutely tightlyclosing primary air shut-off flap on the unit's entrancesocket.
