Note to Parents There are two main types of activities within the activity book, ones that can be done on the kitchen table – or wherever – and others that are fun games and skill developers that can take place in a small outdoor area, such as the backyard, with a soccer ball. You may do some of the outdoor activities inside if you have the space, such as a recreation room and a soft ball, but be careful out (or in) there!

The "Kitchen Table" exercises are perfect for when you are preparing dinner. You can select a page and direct your child to complete one (or more) of the pages – often with a limited amount of supervision. At the back of this book is a Parent Guide with suggestions on how you can help your child with these activity pages.

Go and have fun!

Two’s Company – Three’s a Team

2 against 2 or 3 against 3 is a great way to play soccer, plenty of kicks of the ball and plenty of goals.

Color the 2 teams of 3. Can you figure out who belongs to each team? Clue! Look at the positions they have taken up and the jerseys they are wearing.

Be a Designer Can you design uniforms for Sue and Sam that are totally different?

You have the choice of having long sleeves or short sleeves.

Remember that soccer players like bright uniforms.

Me and My Shadow

Take turns in dribbling the ball. The “Shadow” must stay as close as possible.

Later the “Dribbler” can try to lose the “Shadow” by moving off quickly left or right.

Try quick turns and fakes. Don’t forget to change every once in a while so that Mum or Dad has a chance of running with the ball and the child must try to “shadow.”

Great Save The goalkeeper has made a flying save. A goalkeeper can use his hands to save a goal, but must wear a different coloured jersey so everyone can see he or she is the goalkeeper. Put the three players in uniform. One is the attacker and the other is the defender, so all three will have different uniforms.

Sand Soccer! What is Wrong?

There are a few things that seem out of place in the desert. Can you spot them?

Questions – Sand Soccer 1. Can you colour the players so that they are clearly on two different teams?

2. How many soccer balls are there?

3. If the balls were shared between the two teams how many would each team have?

4. If they were shared with all the players how many balls per player?

5. Name all the animals?

6. How many adults are watching?

Go Fetch!

Mom or Dad can send Junior on a little walk. He has to bring the ball back as quickly as possible. Ask him to try bringing it back three different ways.

Then junior can get his own back by shooting at Dad.

How to Kick a Ball There are two different types of kicks here.

Look closely at Picture 1 and Picture 2.

PICTURE 1 PICTURE 2 What do you think the difference is between the two?

Then try chipping the ball over the cones or any small obstacle. If you find it difficult, build a kicking tee out of sand.

Which kick would you use, picture 1 or picture 2? Both kicks will work, but in different ways.

Wall Pass The “Wall Pass” is a very important pass in soccer. It is normally used to get behind an opponent with the ball.

Use Dad/Mom as the “Wall” and then score a goal.

You need the pass to be very accurate as the “Wall” should not have to move. The ball is one-timed into the path of the shooter – just like kicking against a wall.

Then you can be the “Wall” and let Mom or Dad play the pass.

The Soccer Game

Here is a picture of two teams playing 3-a-side soccer. Colour the uniforms of the two teams. Look carefully at the picture to decide who is on which team. You don’t want to kick the ball into your own goal!

When you have finished colouring your players, remember to colour the

whole picture.

People love to watch kids play soccer.

Look closely to see if you can answer these questions:

1. How many adults are watching?

2. How many people are watching in all?

3. How many cones are being used?

4. How many people are standing up?

5. How many kids are watching?

6. How many soccer balls are there?

7. How many people are sitting down?

8. How many people are playing & watching?

Extra: Circle the soccer coaches.

What are they wearing around their necks? ________________________

Who’s Ready to Play? Although all 4 players are keen to get the soccer game going only 1 is properly dressed and ready to play.

Colour the player who is ready.

Draw an arrow pointing to what’s wrong with the uniforms of the other three players.

Be sure you’re always ready to play soccer SAFELY!

Let’s Play – 1 Make sure to stay behind lines

Hit the Cone

Trying to hit the cone is a great practice to help your passing and shooting.

If you haven’t got cones use something else such as a plastic water bottle or a plastic bucket.

If you find it difficult to start with, use three cones. Then as you get better, use a really small single target like a water bottle.

Page 20: ACTIVE START ONE-WITH-ONE PROGRAM...Active Start One-With-One® Program - Activity Pages Part 2 (Under 6) 3 2 Maze Dribble Dribbling in soccer is simply A-Mazing!Can you find two or

Let’s Play – 2

Now try to score goals with the two cones. Maybe work as a team. How quickly can we score 10 goals? To make it harder, goals don’t count if the shot touches the cone on the way through.

2 vs. 2 Soccer (Join the Dots)

Here’s a chance to create your own 2-a-side soccer game.

Join the dots to make a soccer field.

Start with #1 and draw straight lines through to #9. Use a ruler if you wish.

Do the same for A, B, C, D, E, F, G & H.

Here’s the fun part. Draw in 2 players on each team to play 2 vs. 2 soccer.

Why not go into the park and play the same game you have developed above.

Remember, as there are two of you playing you can pass the ball so… “Don’t be a BALL HOG!”

Handling Zones for Goalkeepers

In small-sided soccer (3 vs. 3 and 4 vs. 4) there is a goalbox at the end of each field (see diagram A). This is where the goalkeeper of the defending team is allowed to handle the ball. Goalkeepers can only handle the ball in the goal area. If the ball is touching or passing over the line, the line is considered part of the goal area (see IN and OUT in the illustration below.) Later, with larger numbers on a side and in 11 vs. 11 play, the goalbox is changed to become the penalty area (see B).

1. How many balls are outside the Handling Area? A: B:

2. How many are inside the Handling Area? A: B:

Parent Guide

Page 2 Maze Dribble

There are actually four different ways to get through the maze, but they all share some part of each run.

Page 3 Two’s Company, Three’s a Team

One team is in short sleeves and the other has long sleeves, but it is the “Triangle of Soccer” that shows that both teams are playing well. The team with the ball – the attacking team – has a bigger triangle of support than the defenders – who are defending well with their tighter triangle concentrated in front of the goal. Perhaps you can ask your child to join all three attackers and defenders with a line to form the two triangles. Maybe color the two triangles with different colours.

Page 4 Be a Designer

The illustration may be a little small for young children to accurately colour, so some help from an elder brother or sister or Mom or Dad might be needed.

Page 5 Me & My Shadow

Take turns, but don’t go for long (10-15 seconds) as this can be hard work – particularly for Mom or Dad!

Page 6 Great Save

The goalkeepers have to wear a distinctive color so the referee is able to quickly discern who can use the hands in the penalty area. Sometimes only the jersey is different from the rest of the team uniform.

Page 7 and 8 Sand Soccer

Make sure your child looks closely at the picture. Then you can ask the 6 questions. The term “animals” is used to describe all the creatures in the illustration – other than the humans (who technically are animals as well).

Page 9 Go Fetch

You can have a bit of fun with this one. Can they bring it back only using their head? Better make sure the surface is good or they might scuff their nose!

Page 10 How to Kick a Ball

Get your child to study the illustrations and then see if they can use both kicks in the backyard or at the park. The chip pass is quite difficult for a young player. In fact they both are. Build a little kicking tee with sand or soil so they can get their foot underneath the ball a bit more.

Page 11 Wall Pass

This is good fun – particularly if the reward for doing a good wall pass is the chance to score a goal. A child will find being the “wall” quite difficult as they have to one-time the pass, but it is worth having a try.

Page 12 Spot the Cones

You had better have a sly look at this one before your child does. If he or she spots 8 cones and you can only find 7, how embarrassing will that be?

Page 13 and 14 The Soccer Game

This is similar to the Sand Soccer pages earlier. You will need to help your child to comprehend everything in the illustration and the questions that are asked.

Page 15 Who’s Ready to Play?

If your child is having difficulties ask them to look at the socks. Only two players are wearing shinguards. Of the two with shinguards one (#4) does not have her jersey tucked into her shorts. While some referees allow this to happen, technically it is against the dress rules of soccer.

Page 16 and 17 Let’s Play 1 & 2

Two good games to help develop the skills involved in kicking, shooting and passing the ball. If your child is not having enough success give them more cones or plastic water bottles to aim at. Or make the goal wider in the two cone game. And/or bring your child nearer to the cones while handicapping an older brother or sister or yourself.

Page 18 2 vs. 2 Soccer

Chances are your child will need a helping hand with this one – unless your child is a genius! A ruler and some gentle persuasion and encouragement will all help. And an understanding of the game of soccer will be developed.

Page 19 Handling Zones for Goalkeepers

It might be a good idea to use a dime to show how the ball passes over a line and when it is in and out of play.
