The Alberta TamePasture Scorecard is a quick andeasy way of doing a pasture as-sessment. The Sustainable Re-source Development HealthAssessment forms are anothergood tool that provides a moredetailed assessment of the pas-ture.

Pasture assessments look atkey indicators to measure pas-ture productivity and vigor. Indi-cators such as plant population,plant density, plant vigor, groundcover, soil damage and severityand uniformity of use are as-sessed.

“Pasture assessments provideproducers with informationneeded to make decisions ongrazing management, timing ofgrazing, cross fencing and pas-ture fertility,” says Grant Lastiwka,forage/grazing/beef specialistwith Alberta Agriculture and RuralDevelopment. “Assessmentssize-up the condition of the pas-ture and identify strengths andweaknesses so managementcan be targeted to produce spe-cific results. Regular pasture as-sessments optimize forageproduction and evaluate the sus-tainability of pasture manage-ment systems.”

Pastures should be assessedat least once a year, during thegrowing season. Pastures thatare more intensively managed

should be assessed more fre-quently. These pasture assess-ments allow producers to lookclosely at the pasture and iden-tify specific areas where man-agement improvements may beprofitable and effective. Assess-ments allow targeted, specificmanagement. Once problemsare identified, a rejuvenationmethod can be selected to fix theproblems.

“In spring, one of the most ef-fective rejuvenation techniques isto delay the onset of grazing,”says Lastiwka. “This gives plantstime during a very active growthperiod for recovering vigour thatwas lost from overwintering and

also if overgrazing occurred inthe previous year. With renewedvigour plants will produce moreforage and their deeper root sys-tem will access more soil nutri-ents. These healthy plants arealso more drought tolerant.”
