Adding Turnitin to iLearn

To add a Turnitin assignment to your iLearn unit, click the “turn editing on” button, then click “Add activity or resource” link on your page.

From the pop up select “Turnitin Assignment 2” and click “Add”.

Setting up Turnitin

On the following screen, fill out the name and summary of the assignment. You will also need to select from the drop down what type of submission you will allow. You will have the following options:

File upload Student uploads documents to the assignment i.e. word documents

Text Submission Student types their work into a text box supplied on screen

Any Submission Type Student selects which form of submission type they will submit from the above options

Number of Parts – Each student can submit up to 5 pieces of work to a single assignment. The default is set to 1.

Overall Grade – Set this to whatever grading system you use. However If you set this to Fail/Remediation/Pass, when you go to grade the assignment it will still ask you for a numerical grade. If you put a grade in it will then give you the desired pass/fail/remediation text:

* Please note, when adding a grade to your assignment use Fail/Remediation/Pass – New NOT Pass/Fail/Remediation Grade.

Student Originality Reports – If set to Yes, then the student will be able to see the plagiarised report that turnitin produces. If set to no, then only the lecturer will see this.

Report Generation Speed – You are given 3 options for this:

Generate reports Immediately, first report is final –

Turnitin produces the plagiarised report immediately, but this cannot be overwritten

Generate reports Immediately, reports can be overwritten until due date –

Turnitin produces the plagiarised report immediately, but this can be overwritten until the due date

Generate reports on due date –

Turnitin will only produce the plagiarised report on the due date.

You can set Turnitin to check against other stored student papers within the Turnitin database, as well as checking against the internet, periodicals, journals and publications.

You can also tell Turnitin whether you would like it to exclude the bibliography in its check and to exclude anything in quotes or even certain words.Once you have completed this, click “Save and return to course”.

Once you return to the course, a link to the assessment will be on your iLearn unit page. Click on this to access the assignment.

Editing Submission Dates

You can edit the Submission date both when first creating the Turnitin submission as well as when viewing the completed Turnitin submission. Both dates are the same and changing the date on one will reflect on the other.

When first creating

When you first create the Turnitin link on your course, under the ‘Assignment Part 1’ dropdown, you will be presented with the following options.

Most settings can be set as default but to change an option you can select using the appropriate dropdowns.

Start date: When the assignment will allow students to start uploading fromDue date: When the assignment is duePost date: When the results will be available to students

On viewing assignment

When you click on the Turnitin link on your course, you will then be taken to the following page.

Click on the highlighted pencil tool to set the submission dates for this assignment. Clicking away will remove the dropdowns and update with the relevant date:

The “Post Date”, is the date that any grades/feedback you give to the student is released to them so they can see this.

Student Submission

When the student clicks on the turnitin assignment link on the iLearn page, they will see the following page, giving them information on due dates, summary etc.

To submit an assignment, the student will need to click on the “My Submissions” tab. Here they will give their submission a title and be able to upload by clicking on the highlighted “Browse” button. They will also have to check the box to accept that the work they are submitting is their own. Once complete they click “Add Submission”.

Student Submissions View

Once uploaded, the student can view their submission under the “My Submissions” tab. They can open the assignment by clicking on the title of their submission. Whether they see the full plagiarized report that Turnitin provides will depend on whether you have allowed the student originality reports. This page will also show how much plagiarized content Turnitin has picked up, as well as they grade you have given the student.

Lecturer Submission View

When the student has submitted their work, the lecturer can go into the turnitin assignment tool and mark this, by clicking on the “Submission Inbox” tab. Here you can see the similarity report and you can also grade this here by clicking on the small pencil icon under “Grade”.

To view the submission, click on the title of the work. This will open up the submission in turnitin:

Active Layers

Once it is open, you will see the Active Layers on the right hand side of the page:

The blue icons on the app show the grading tools used in the marking process.

The first icon allows you to see the options in “QuickMarks”

The second blue icon allows you to leave feedback for the student, either voice or text

Adding Verbal Feedback

If you would like to add voice comments to a submission, you can do this by selecting the small speech bubble icon as highlighted above. To start recording, you will need a microphone or a small headset. With the microphone connected, click on the icon highlighted below to begin recording. You can stop recording by clicking on the square stop button and you can delete this by clicking on the small bucket tool.

The third blue icon allows you to adjust the rubric

The second shows the sources that the matches came from

The first grey icon allows you to download the document and the second shows information about the submission

* Please note, if students are doing remediation, their originality report on the plagiarised content will increase as it will recognise this from their previous original submission.

Remediation

If you require students to submit again for remediation, it is recommended that you create a separate turnitin assignment.

This will make it a lot easier in terms of student’s knowing where to submit to and will make it easier for the lecturer to grade and give feedback too. The remediation submission can remain hidden. To hide/show the submission, make sure editing is turned on. Next to the turnitin submission on your iLearn course click on the edit link:

From the options, select “Hide”

Repeat the process to show the submission.
