artists and I would like to extend my congratulations to you on choosing the best organization in the area.
At Northwest Martial Arts, we strive to provide our students with
the highest quality of instruction by teaching valuable Taekwondo techniques and essential principles of self-defense in a well rounded
curriculum. We feel it is important for our students to learn and be challenged in a safe, supportive, and fun atmosphere. Northwest offers
opportunities to suit a variety of abilities and interest levels, from the
beginning youth student to the elite national level competitor. The training possibilities and growth potential of any student is only limited by a
student’s desire to achieve.
As a student in our school, we expect you will have many questions during your training. This orientation packet and the student
handbook are designed to provide information about the martial arts and the programs available at our school. These sources of information provide
answers to many of the questions you may have. They will also provide
valuable review information for what you will learn in your first classes.
If you have additional questions beyond what is found within this resource, please do not hesitate to ask your instructor or members of our
school’s leadership team, who are available before and after each lesson.

EVENING CLASS SCHEDULE Students should arrive for class 5 minutes before the class begins. This
time should be used to prepare for class, stretching, or skill practice.
Morning classes are held dur ing the summer months on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 am for Youth Advanced Students and 10 am for Youth Novice/Beginners. Thurs-day youth evening classes are held only during the school year, not in the summer. Mondays and Wednesdays are the same all year long for all ages and ranks.
RESPECT & RESPONSIBILITY IN THE GYM
Throughout a students training, respect and responsibility are continually encouraged and enforced. As students learn, self-discipline, traditional
values and a positive attitude are an important part of the overall martial arts experience. Students will participate in class while practicing respect
in all areas of their lesson, including answering “yes sir” to instructions,
bowing to others, and address others with Mr. or Ms. with their name. Respectful and responsible students ensure a safe, friendly, and positive
learning environment for everyone.
UNIFORM New students should wear comfortable sports clothing until they have a
uniform to wear. Shoes and socks are not worn on the training floor. Once a student has a uniform, it must be worn for every class. It is the
student’s responsibility to keep their uniform neat and clean. A dirty and/
or wrinkly uniform is not acceptable. During the summer months, from May 15th to September 15th, students may wear summer T-shirt uniform
tops in place of the traditional top.
EQUIPMENT Equipment is not required for class participation. Optional equipment for
use in class can be purchased anywhere, but it is strongly recommended
that it be purchased through your instructor. Specific equipment and brands are used for quality and safety reasons. Most equipment is stocked
and available at all times, although some is available only by order. All equipment must be kept clean and in good working condition. Worn or
broken equipment can cause injury to the student and fellow classmates.

FIRST LESSONS As students enter the gym, there will be supervised free time before each
class on the training floor. During this time, students can visit with friends and/or practice with the available equipment assigned by instructors. In
the first couple of lessons, the student will learn a variety of Taekwondo
technique including kicking, striking, and blocking skills. It is important to note these techniques are only to be used in emergency situations or
practiced at home where and when parents see fit. New students will have assistance and close supervision from an instructor during much of the first
couple of classes and can complete tasks by following other students. New activities may be difficult, so each student is encouraged to try their
best to complete activities. Students will learn new and exciting skills each day, while continually improving skills they already have learned.
CLASS STRUCTURE Warm Up:
Each class starts with a 15 minute warm up and fitness routine, this section prepares the student for the demands of Taekwondo. Fitness concepts
such as flexibility, strength, endurance, and agility are focused on as students complete a variety of activities.
Group Lesson: Students have a 10 Minute group lesson which focus on different specific
Taekwondo skills, situations, Self-Defense concepts, or principles.
Curriculum: For 20-25 minutes, students learn, practice, or apply the belt curriculum for
the rank which they are individually progressing. Activity:
In many classes, students will participate together in a closing activity to help them strengthen concepts learned in class. These games end class in
a positive light and help keep the students motivated through their hard work in each class. After all, having fun is an important part of learning.
Stripe Challenging:
The last 5 minutes of each class is reserved for individual practice and stripe challenging. (explained on page 4)

The student will be given opportunities to challenge for their stripe when
they have learned the material and are prepared to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the material.
PROMOTION TESTING Testing for belt ranks is not a part of your monthly tuition and is an
optional motivation tool for students. Testing is a decision between the instructor, parent, and student. In order for a student to have the privilege
to test for belt promotion they must fulfill the following requirements: 1) The student must have earned all their stripes.
2) The student must have completely filled out the required Belt Promotion Form and returned the form with the testing fee.
3) The student must have a positive attitude for a successful test.
If a student does not fulfill all the requirements, testing may be postponed
PARENT’S ROLE Parents play a very important role in their child’s training by providing
support and encouragement when your child is being challenged. Much like in school, there are times when a child has difficulties and may have to
work hard to earn accomplishments. This is an important part of the learning process. A parents’ role is important if the student is struggling
and may not want to attend. If a student is struggling in any area, please
ask an instructor for assistance. Encouragement, support, and even requiring attendance can help your
child advance. Overcoming challenges will help the student develop a “never give up attitude” which carries over into other aspects of a student’s
life. Behind every successful student is a supportive family giving encouragement to the student to do his or her best. Reminders to practice
material, occasional extra class attendance, reviewing material, and prizes for accomplishing a goal are popular methods of parental support. Parents
are encouraged to watch class, but are not required to attend. Spectators
should not interject with comments from the sidelines to interrupt class.
