NEW AT THE LIBRARY
Featured book: Handbook of International Disaster Psychology (four-volume set)
RC451.4.D57 H36 2006
Description: A remarkable team of expert authors provides firsthand accounts from disaster survivors around the globe, enabling readers to understand the lingering trauma and mental wounds that might otherwise go unrecognized, yet last a lifetime. These are the men, women, and children whom practitioners in the new field of disaster psychology seek to heal. They include survivors of torture, terrorism, genocide attempts, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunami, and other manmade or natural disasters. This set of books is the most comprehensive available resource explaining the practices and principles that have been em-ployed, and are being employed, to heal them.
See Carrie or Michelle to check out these books Monday through Friday.
COMMON BOOK PROGRAM
The Common Book Program is launching for the 2013-2014 academic year!
All new students, faculty, and staff received their copy of Louise Erdrich's "The Roundhouse" during Orientation. Extra copies are available for pick up to all students and staff who may not have attended
Orientation.
Dr. Vaneeta Sandhu, Core Faculty and Training Coordinator for the Psy.D. Program, and Ms. Ada Christopher, Director of Admissions and Student Services, will serve as the Vancouver campus
Common Book Program Committee.
Keep your eyes and ears on the lookout for the official launch event of the program this fall! We are looking forward to engaging with the community on social justice issues that are themes throughout this
wonderful book.
NEW PsyD PROGRAM
At long last, the PsyD program (Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology) has begun!
After lots of dedicated work by our Dean, Dr. Larry Axelrod, and our Director of Training and Community Service, Dr. Michael Mandrusiak, the inaugural class began this September. We have 15 new students
who come from a wealth of interesting backgrounds and experiences. New faculty are also on board: Dr. Vaneeta Sandhu, Core Faculty and Training Coordinator; Dr. David Aboussafy, Core Faculty; Dr. Cindy
Weisbart, PsyD, Core Faculty and Program Director. Michael Mandrusiak also serves our program serving as Core Faculty in addition to his role as Director of Training and Community Service.
We think our program is a real trailblazer with a fabulous first cohort helping us to blaze the trail … we
believe the PsyD will change the way psychology is practiced in Western Canada and beyond!

The rain began early in the morning outside my bedroom window. It was not a day for marching the streets; it
was a day for lounging around in a sweater with a book. Not to be deterred, I grabbed my umbrella and a hot
coffee, and made my way downtown.
Gathered, a little group of Adlerians, we soon forgot about the downpour. Dr. Bernice King spoke about the
parallels between black relations in the US and the Canadian history of mistreating the First Nations people.
The difference, she said, was that we had built reconciliation into the process. This allowed the sharing of
stories and the facing of ugly truths, and it was from this point that we would be able to help the various
Nations rebuild with dignity. Each speaker reflected this need for honesty and, as each word was spoken, it
began to feel like we were taking part in a momentous step toward a socially just Canada.
The energy buoyed by strong words and a passionate crowd, the march began. We passed over and back over
the viaducts, winding our way through the DTES before ending close to where we began. There was cheering
and shouting and young children walking with pride, kept warm in their button blankets. My mother
remarked, later in the day, that seeing these young children celebrating a culture that is often denigrated,
seeing them act as honored and respected hosts, was her favorite part of the day. In those children, we saw
the seed of belonging being nurtured.
If any message stuck with me after the walk was long over and I had made my way into my warm sweater, it
was the power of community presence: the power in just being a witness, in being a story listener.
