DECEMBER 2016 NEWSLETTER École Sir William Osler December 2016 Newsletter Principal, Karen Loveridge Phone Number 204-488-3569 1600 Grant Aveune ADMINISTRATOR’S GREETING S eason’s Greetings to all of our École Sir William Osler families! December is always an exciting time for our young children. As the snow begins to fall and the holiday season approaches, it is the perfect time to teach our students about being grateful, generous and kind. École Sir William Osler will be participating in Atticus McIllraith’s 4 th Annual Baby Formula Drive, in conjunction with Winnipeg Harvest. Atticus McIllraith is a former student at École J.B. Mitchell. We encourage you to send a can of baby formula to school to help support this endeavor. No baby should ever go hungry! Please read further in our newsletter for more information. We would like to thank all of our families for your amazing support of all of our school endeavors! École Sir William Osler is becoming a very active community school! We were very happy to have over 98% of our families attend our tri-conferences in November! Teachers and students were pleased to share all of their learning and plans with you. As well, thank you to all who were able to support our Book Fair! We made just over $800.00, which we will use to support our growing school library. Our poinsettia and door swag fundraiser was also a big hit! Thank you to those families who purchased items. École Sir William Osler sold over 300 items and made approximately $2,600.00! This money will go directly towards supporting enriching educational activities for our students! A big thank you to Salena Buchan, our lunch program coordinator, for all of her work organizing the lunch program and our first Pizza Fun Lunch this year! Thank you to all of the parents who helped serve lunch that day! Our students are looking forward to our next Pizza Fun Lunch on Wednesday, December 21! We also extend our thanks to parents, Sargent Bloomfield and Petty Officer McKee, for participating in École Sir William Osler’s Remembrance Day Ceremony. We appreciated Petty Officer McKee’s bilingual speech and bugle playing. We value your commitment and support of our school and our country. As well, thank you to author Larry Verstraete, for visiting our grade one and two students and talking about his latest book, “Dinosaurs of the Deep.” Thank you to the Dalhouse family for your assistance with this! To start off the holiday season, we invite all of our families to attend our Winter Concert on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at École River Heights School, 1350 Grosvenor Avenue. École River Heights School is a dual track, French Immersion and English, Middle Years school. As we are anticipating a large number of families, École River Heights has graciously offered us the use of their school gym. It is a much larger space, complete with a stage! Doors to the gym will be open at 5:30 p.m. More information about our concert will be sent home. In addition, we invite families to our Winter Sing-a-long Assembly in our school gym at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 21, 2016. Please come and sing a few seasonal songs with us! We hope you will have many wonderful family moments this holiday season. Please help encourage your children’s learning over the holidays by sharing stories, reading with your children and playing card games or board games together. Writing holiday cards or thank you notes is a terrific way to develop writing and drawing skills in an authentic manner. Another fun activity is cooking together, reading recipes and using numbers and measurement. On behalf of all the staff at École Sir William Osler, during this season of peace and goodwill, we would like to extend our best holiday wishes. May the warmth and cheer of the season be with you and your loved ones. Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and all the best for a happy and healthy 2017! Mme K. Loveridge

Music at École Sir William Osler

All of the kids at École Sir William Osler have been working hard on their pieces for the Winter Concert. It will be a show with a lot of variety! If students would like to practice their songs at home, the lyrics and

recordings can be found by going to the following website: www.awesomechukmusic.weebly.com. We can't wait to share everything we have been working on over the last month on December 8th at our concert.

The stars of the month for December will be: Room 3: Anna and Chloe Room 5: Neev and Graham Room 4: Ella and Johnny Thank you for always coming to class prepared and ready to work, especially during this busy month of concert preparation!

After our concert is said and done, we will begin learning about the Symphony Orchestra with students in grades 1 and 2. This will prepare us for our first music field trip to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra which will take place January 17th!

Cold Weather Clothing

The days are getting much colder. Please send your children to school so they arrive just before the bell rings at 8:20 a.m. That way, they won’t have to stay outdoors for a long time.

Students are expected to be outside for both recesses, at lunchtime, as well as before school.

Please remember to put a t-shirt under the warm layers of sweatshirts and sweaters so students don’t get too hot during gym class.

Please help by making sure that they dress for the weather as well as for the school.

Severe Weather Conditions

The decision to close all schools is made by the Chief Superintendent (or designate) in consultation with other Superintendents in Winnipeg and with the Chair of the Board of Trustees.

If it becomes necessary for the schools to be closed during a school day because of severe weather conditions, the school will be contacted by telephone by a representative from the Superintendent’s Department.

The announcement will be advertised on the Winnipeg School Division website and on the following: - 89.3 CBC FM - 990 CBC AM - 89.9 CBC FRENCH - VIRGIN RADIO 103 - CJOB 680 AM - 1290 CFRW - 92 CITI FM - CITY TV - FAB 94.3 FM - QX 104 FM - 99.9 BOB FM - CTV NEWS - 102.3 CLEAR FM - BIG 97 - WINNIPEG FREE PRESS WEBSITE

Snowball Throwing Rule

Every winter we impress on our students the importance of our “No Snowball Throwing” rule. To ensure the safety of everyone, snowball throwing is not allowed on the school grounds or on the way to and from school. However, we do encourage the students to build snowmen! Please help us by reinforcing this message at home.

Please also ensure your child does not walk on the snow banks beside the road. This is very unsafe and could result in a very serious accident, should they slip into oncoming traffic.
