Deciding to go to university is a big step, especially when you are unsure if you will meet the admission criteria. The first thing you need to do is check which of our admission pathways you may be eligible for, and how they work.

Several of these pathways allow us to learn more about you than just your Year 12 results. We may be able to consider your extracurricular activities, community involvement, whether you had some kind of disadvantage during your time at high school, or if you want to come back to uni after time off from studying.

There are two main categories: − Year 12 pathways − Post‑high‑school pathways.

For a full list of admission pathways, criteria and application advice, visit − sydney.edu.au/admission‑pathways

Our students come from diverse backgrounds, forming a student body

with wide‑ranging interests, talents and perspectives.

There are several admission pathways for recent school leavers.

You can apply if you will be completing Year 12 this year or if you’ve taken a gap year and not yet started any tertiary study (at diploma level or

above). For some pathways, only students in Year 12 can apply.

YEAR 12 PATHWAYS

“I was fortunate enough to gain entry via the Broadway Scheme, and I have constantly benefited from the vast array of support and opportunities provided to me. I feel that I have become a much more efficient, passionate and mature student as a result.”Duncan Robertson Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of LawsBroadway student

Broadway SchemeUnder the Universities Admissions Centre’s (UAC) Educational Access Scheme (EAS), an adjustment factor can be applied to your admission criteria. This means you can be admitted to your preferred course with an ATAR up to ten points below the one published for that course. The adjustment factor may be less than ten ATAR points, depending on course demand, availability of places and the severity of the disruption to your studies.

Who is it for?Year 12 students who have experienced long‑term educational disadvantage recognised by UAC, such as:

− disrupted schooling − financial hardship − disrupted home environment − English language difficulty − personal illness or disability − refugee status.

To support your application, you need to demonstrate to UAC how your performance during Year 11 and/or Year 12 was seriously affected by circumstances beyond your control.

How do I apply? You must submit an EAS application via your UAC application.

Application closing dateSubmit your EAS application via UAC by 29 November 2019 for consideration in December Round 2 offers.

Cadigal ProgramWho is it for? This is an access and support program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, both Year 12 students and post‑high‑school students. The program assists your transition into university life and provides additional academic, social and cultural support throughout your degree.

How do I apply? You will need to submit two separate applications:

− your UAC application, via www.uac.edu.au − a Cadigal Program application,

via cadigal.sydney.edu.au

All Cadigal applications require confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity documentation.*

Mathematics prerequisiteThe University’s mathematics prerequisite applies to students entering the Cadigal Program. Under the Cadigal Program, an Associate Dean may admit an applicant who has not achieved Band 4 in HSC Mathematics, if they are satisfied that the student meets the standards by:

− demonstrating the capacity to succeed in coursework at a university level

− enrolling in an approved mathematics prerequisite course in their first year of enrolment and satisfying the requirements for this course.

* Can be a letter stamped with a common seal from your local land council, legal service, Aboriginal Medical Service, or other incorporated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisation. Alternatively, you can provide a statutory declaration stating your identity.

“The Elite Athletes and Performers Scheme was incredibly helpful in getting me to

where I want to be in my education.

“Athletes and performers have an entirely different schedule and lifestyle

to many other students. Because the University recognises this, we can have

our achievements acknowledged.”

Genevieve de la Motte Bachelor of Applied Sciences (Physiotherapy)Elite Athletes and Performers Scheme student

“The Cadigal Program provides a safe space and environment for Aboriginal students to come together, bond and make great friendships, which is a big part of university life. The staff do everything they can to support you through uni.”Harry WhittingBachelor of Social WorkCadigal Program student

Future Leaders SchemeWho is it for? This scheme offers Dux students and school captains across Australia a guaranteed place at the University of Sydney based on their academic achievements, leadership at school and a principal’s nomination.

The Future Leaders Scheme offers you admission to eligible courses with a lower ATAR (or IB equivalent) than the one published. See a full list of courses included in this scheme on pages 11 to 14.

If nominated and eligible for the scheme, you will receive a list of courses available to you based on your ATAR results. While a number of courses offer a guaranteed place, some competitive courses have limited places available and are not guaranteed ‑ these are known as quota courses. If selecting a quota course as your first preference through UAC, it is recommended that you also list a course with guaranteed entry as a back‑up option.

Whether the course has guaranteed entry or not, you will still need to meet any additional admission criteria and list the course as your first UAC preference to be eligible to receive an offer.

− sydney.edu.au/admission‑pathways

How do I apply? For an offer via this pathway, you need to:

− be nominated by your school principal by the due date published online (you cannot nominate yourself)

− achieve an ATAR of at least 65 (or equivalent IB score)

− place one of the courses available through this pathway as your highest eligible UAC preference, and

− meet any additional admission criteria for your selected course.

Application closing date29 November 2019

“Future Leaders was one of the most amazing things that I stumbled across during my HSC. It allowed me to maintain my leadership commitments while granting entry into the course I’d been aiming for my entire school life.”Josie JakovacBachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of LawsFuture Leaders Scheme student

Elite Athletes and Performers SchemeWho is it for?If you are an elite athlete or performer and your rehearsal, training, and/or competitive commitments have substantially affected your school results, we invite you to apply.

How do I apply? You need to submit two applications:

− your UAC application − a separate application form (and supporting

documentation) for the Elite Athletes and Performers Scheme. For more information, visit sydney.edu.au/admission‑pathways

Early Offer Year 12 (E12) SchemeWe realise the ATAR is not always a true measure of your potential to succeed at university and beyond. Our Early Offer Year 12 (E12) Scheme shifts focus from the ATAR alone, giving you the opportunity to show us more about yourself.

Our E12 pathway is administered via UAC’s Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS) and is available to students who have experienced financial disadvantage during their time at school and have demonstrated the potential to succeed at the University of Sydney.

You have the opportunity to receive an early conditional offer, where your place will be confirmed as long as you meet the E12 ATAR (which is lower than the published ATAR) and any other additional admission criteria.

Mathematics prerequisite The University’s mathematics prerequisite applies to all domestic students, including students applying through admission pathways. To find out if maths prerequisites are required for your course, visit

− sydney.edu.au/study/maths

If you successfully enrol under our E12 scheme, you will receive:

− a $5950 scholarship − a University of Sydney Union ACCESS

membership that provides discounts on and off campus with major retailers, and access to more than 200 clubs and societies

− additional support during your first year here.

There are more than 80 courses you can apply for through E12, so you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.

− sydney.edu.au/e12‑study‑areas

Who is E12 for?To be eligible, you need to be:

− assessed by UAC, via the Educational Access Schemes (EAS) program, as experiencing financial hardship (F01A, F01B, F01C or F01D); or

− residing at the time of your UAC application in an area identified by the Australian Bureau of Statistics as being in the lowest 30 percent of socio‑economic disadvantage in Australia. For information about the Socio‑Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA), search www.abs.gov.au

You also need to be: − undertaking the HSC or International

Baccalaureate (IB) at a NSW high school − supported by your school principal

(ratings are to be submitted in the SRS system as part of your application)

− a domestic undergraduate student (international students are not eligible to apply)

− meet any other additional admission criteria.

If you are not residing in an area identified by the Australian Bureau of Statistics as being in the lowest 30 percent of socio‑economic disadvantage in Australia, then your offer will depend upon your acceptance into the UAC Educational Access Scheme for financial disadvantage. You need to apply for this separately. For details, visit

Application closing date30 September 2019 – refer to

− sydney.edu.au/e12

“E12 is such a great way to secure your place in the course you want to study. You are given a conditional offer before you even start your exams, which takes some of the weight off your shoulders so you can just focus on doing the best you can in your exams.”

Nimasha Weththasinghe (right)Bachelor of Applied Sciences (Diagnostic Radiography)E12 student

5 steps to apply through E12

1. Choose an E12 course(April – May)

Look through the available E12 courses to find one that’s right for you. Make sure you’re taking any HSC subjects relevant to that course, and that you have a good chance of meeting the E12 ATAR and any other admission criteria. Remember, you can only apply for one E12 course, so choose wisely!

E12 applications for 2020 entry open on 3 April 2019 via UAC’s Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS). − www.uac.edu.au/srs

2. Check your eligibility(April – May)

Make sure you meet the E12 eligibility criteria for admission. − sydney.edu.au/e12

3. Prepare your E12 application(June – July)

Prepare your E12 supporting document which contains your answers to the three E12 questions. The document and more information can be found on the E12 website at

− sydney.edu.au/e12‑how‑to‑apply

Advise your school principal (as well as your careers adviser) that you intend to apply for E12 – they will need to complete the online supporting application (via UAC) once you apply.

4. Submit your application online(August – September)

Submit a Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS) application via UAC and place the course you wish to be considered for under E12 as your first University of Sydney preference.

The eligible course listed as your first University of Sydney preference as at 11.59pm, 30 September 2019, will be the only course considered for your E12 application and cannot be changed.

Please ensure you upload your E12 supporting document in the SRS portal to be considered for E12 entry. Applications for E12 (via SRS) close on 30 September 2019.

5. Sit your HSC exams and wait for your results(November – December)

Successful applicants will receive a conditional E12 offer in mid‑November.

Some courses have additional admission criteria where you may be asked to attend an interview with the faculty that teaches your E12 course, audition or submit a portfolio.

Once you have received your ATAR, met the conditions listed on your conditional E12 offer, as well as any other additional admission criteria and placed your E12 course as your first eligible preference by close of preferences for December Round 2 consideration, you will receive a UAC offer from us.

Welcome to the University of Sydney!

Special Consideration for Admission SchemeIf you have started some form of tertiary study, and experienced disadvantage during your secondary or tertiary studies, you may be eligible for this scheme. Your high school results need to be close to the ATAR for your preferred course.

How do I apply? − Submit an application through the

Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). − Submit a separate online application form

for Special Consideration for Admission to the University’s Admissions Office. Visit sydney.edu.au/admission‑pathways

Application closing date20 December 2019

TransferringIf you don’t get into the course you want in your first year, you may be eligible to reapply after you complete one year of full‑time tertiary study at the University of Sydney or another tertiary institution.

This form of admission is very competitive. To be considered, you may need to achieve at least a distinction or credit average, depending on which course you wish to transfer into.

Transferring requirements vary between faculties, but you will generally be assessed on either your university results or your ATAR, depending on which gives you a greater chance of admission. You may also need to submit further information in cases where courses have additional admission criteria.

− sydney.edu.au/study/transfer‑course

You are a post‑high‑school student if you left school two or more years ago and/or have completed some tertiary

study since leaving school.

POST-HIGH-SCHOOL PATHWAYS

Mature-age Entry SchemeEach year the University of Sydney provides undergraduate places for mature‑age entrants. This scheme provides university access if you are 21 years or older and did not attain secondary results sufficient for entry, and you have not completed a full year at a tertiary institution.

University preparation coursesPreparation courses are vital for entry if you’re a mature‑age student. By completing the required course and achieving satisfactory results for admission, you will gain the qualification you need to apply for mature‑age entry, provided you do not already hold qualifications that entitle you to be considered for standard admission.

− sydney.edu.au/admission‑pathways

How do I apply? You apply through UAC.

Application closing date31 January 2020

Graduate entryIn some cases, you can study a general undergraduate degree then follow on by taking a professional or specialist qualification in your preferred subject through postgraduate study.

For example, if you do not receive the ATAR for admission to physiotherapy, you can study a Bachelor of Science (Health) with a major in human movement. If you attain the required grades, you could follow it up with the Master of Physiotherapy.

Similarly, some courses such as medicine or the Juris Doctor (postgraduate law) are available after you have completed an undergraduate degree.

How do I apply? For specific course details, visit

− sydney.edu.au/courses

Filter your ‘Find a course’ search by postgraduate coursework.

Other pathwaysPost‑high‑school students can also apply for:

− Cadigal Program (see page 6) − Elite Athletes and Performers

Scheme (see page 6).
