April 2012 to August 2015 – Crawford Product Design - ProprietorHoneywell – KAC Alarm Company – Project Engineer / Project Managerwww.kac.co.uk
KAC (Honeywell) is the market leader for break glass call-points within the fire industry. KAC is wholly owned by Honeywell and sits within their Automation Controls and Sensors strategic business group as a multi-million dollar Life Safety company. I joined the engineering department in the middle of the development of a new conventional audible visual fire alarm program that was running over time and budget. Through calculated analytical input I returned the project close to the critical path, and subsequently I became a project manager, the mechanical lead on upcoming NPI developments, and cover to the Engineering Manager. The delivery of the VAD program consolidated and protected $1M US market share and attained an additional $0.5M US incremental revenue in the first 18 months of release to market.
Provided authority on polymer part refinement and tooling requirements for moulded items; Re-created parts sympathetic to rheology and ease of tooling, whilst retaining aesthetics and functionality. Signed off as
authority on tooling General Assemblies; Governed e-Auctions for supplier selection including RFQ process. Drove DFMEA and other disorderly documentation into ISO compliance. Engineering support to PFMEA. Lead mechanically based testing program for approvals. Liaised with existing and drew in new suppliers to ensure the product will be finished and fabricated in the best possible
manner. Developed strategic framework suggestions for refinement of the companies NPI process and augmented inter-departmental
support. Provided mentoring to lower level engineers. Introduced best model practice to the DO for 3D data generation, manipulation and structure. Utilised 6 sigma frameworks for design and manufacturing. Mitigated major risks to project paths. Design authority on EN54 part 23 light output requirements for visual based alert system mechanics. Assessed IPR conflicts and strengthened existing IP standing. Design authority on BS EN60529 Ingress Protection. Governed migration of standalone legacy CAD data into PDM environment (PDMLink Windchill). Developed and delivered PDMLink Windchill and Project Link training manuals. Implemented Enterprise Resource Management Software and Training. Developed Engineering Standard Operating Procedures framework. Sourced and led integration of R&D capital expenditure on VADER and CMM systems acquisition. Project Management – WBS, PPF, Power/Interest & Stakeholder analysis, DQTP, GANTT, Risk Analysis.
July 2010 to April 2012 Magellan Biosciences/Dynex Technologies Incorporated – Senior Design Engineerwww.dynextechnolgies.com
Provided senior experience to the DO in Industrial Design, polymer part design, injection mould tooling, pneumatics integration and electro-mechanical assemblies. Lead design directives for achieving FDA and ISO classification for IVD instruments.
Recent projects include;
> Dynex Agility – Fully automated Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay instrument- www.dynex-agilty.com
Complete Industrial Design and aesthetic of the instrument - sketch/model/Solid and Surfacing CAD. Development of 9 large format PU cast parts and tooling. Development of 26 injection moulded parts including: simulation, gate, vent and ejection pin positioning. Signed off as design authority on IM tooling. Sheet metal parts including EMC enclosures. Development of fluid handling and small mechanism assemblies for ELISA processing using pneumatics, stepper
motors and electromagnetic drives. Production of a diverse array of consumables that integrate into the instrument. Development of marketing literature including labelling and carton designs. Technical lead on FDA approvals. ISO 13485 compliance.
> Dynex DS2-Multiplex ELISA Instrument
I am unable to say too much about this product at present due to pending patent app’s and IPR issues. However, if this works the entire landscape of ELISA testing will be redefined. The product will enable a through-put in excess of 960 times the current market leader. The adjective revolutionary was made for this particular innovation.
> Dynex Bead Inserter
Automated instrument for inserting 2mm coated beads into microwell microtitre ELISA plates. Industrial Design Engineering Design
Project Management
April 2007 to July 2010Indigo Blue Design Limited – Proprietor
Product design consultancy to a diverse array of clients. Total closed loop product design methodology encompassing feasibility studies, market placement and lifecycle analysis through to concept designs, materials, DFM, prototyping, tool drawings and manufacture liaison.
Projects include;
> Design and engineering consultancy for Thermo Fisher Scientific developing a biopsy embedding instrument as part of their tissue processing portfolio. - www.thermofisher.com
As part of the clinical diagnostics sphere of the anatomical pathology business unit, I delivered a varied selection of services for Thermo Fisher Scientific. I consulted on the ergonomics and product architecture of the instrument in the industrial design phase, before moving the instrument through the entire product engineering element into production. I instigated several key product features that resulted in unique selling points and consequentially strengthened Thermo Fishers intellectual property in the sector.
My initial task was to develop a suite of 21 injection moulding tools where previously RIM processes had been relied upon. The mechanical form, fit and function were of primary importance as was the necessity of the interaction between electro-mechanical interfaces and semi-automated mechanisms. The resulting quality of my output led to a complete project engineer and management contract.Key functions undertaken;
Industrial design. Polymer part design – including mold-flow analysis interpretation and tooling liaison. Sheet metal fabrications – enclosures. Investment and sand casting parts. Refrigeration system design including condenser and evaporator coils, enthalpy and entropy calculations, charge weight
calculations and thermal transfer mechanics. Heater mat plotting and technical calculations. Complex mechanical mechanisms. Sealing and IP rating enclosures. Materials science and selection – ensuring chemical resistance capability. Verification testing and technical report writing. Extensive presentations and technical design authority representation. Prototyping and manufacturing outsourcing. Product supply road-map structuring – including cost models and budgeting. ISO/BS/FDA Approvals documentation. Design for assembly and manufacture processes including production cell layout and LEAN frameworks.
